Welcome back, sweet friends! Today I have a quick makeover to share! I am finishing up the last few things in my End of Summer Thrift Store Haul and today, I’m sharing what I did with one of the three baskets included in that haul:
I found this basket for $6.25. It looked like it has some age to it and it smelled a bit musty, but I loved how the lid opened from the side. One great thing about painting things is you can easily seal in any musty odors. I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
For this basket, I first gave it a good once over with Rustoleum Spray Primer:
I like to spray baskets by starting with the bottom first.
I set up my medium spray shelter to paint and catch any overspray:
A couple of paint cans in the corners held it in place in my windy neck of the woods. I can even spray small furniture pieces like chairs in this tent. I sometimes like to get a first coat on with a quick coat of spray primer just to save time.
Then I turned it over and sprayed the top and the insides. I did the same with a coat of Rustoleum Blossom White spray paint, everywhere except the top.
I gave the top a coat of Cotton.
I really like the look of chalk paint so much better than spray paint.
For the top, I decided to use up one of the leftover panels from this gorgeous Rose Celebration transfer I used on this dresser that I shared a couple of weeks ago:
I had only used four of the six panels included.
I lightly sanded the top of my basket and the sides as well and cleaned up any dust before applying the transfer to the top with the burnishing tool that comes with the transfer:
After the graphic was transferred, I used a razor blade to cut the transfer away from the edges of the basket, and then removed the plastic top sheet.
I sealed just the top with Cleat Coat in Satin using a the blue sponge applicator, and that was it!
Let’s get a little closer…
Now let’s see more of that pretty top!
Now it’s just about the prettiest picnic basket ever! And you can see that I applied the transfer right over top of the hinges.
If you were to use chalk paint on the sides instead of spray paint, it would shabby up so perfectly.
I was till able to sand a bit with the spray paint though…
I absolutely love a white painted basket!

Oh it is so beautiful now, I love it. I have to get some of those transfers, they certainly are beautiful and they look like they were hand painted onto what ever you use them on. I always love the white paint with them, so fresh and new looking. Beautiful way to save old things from the land fill.

Thank you, Mary! Transfers are such a simple way to really add so much to these pieces…I just love them! And I am right there with you when it comes to white paint…it can fix just about anything!! Have a great day! XOXO

I love what you did with that picnic basket. Where can I get transfers or decals? I have a stack of those picnic baskets in the corner of my living room.
Christy says
Thank you, Mandy! I found this one on Amazon and I linked to it in the post. This one was a bit pricey at around $40, but it is very large so it will do several baskets! XOXO

Yay!! You never disappoint. I have this transfer. Why didnt you use chalk paint though? I am intimated by spray paint. I always get drips and it so un even. Thank you Christy !!!!
Christy says
Aww thank you, my friend! I usually use chalk paint, but I was a bit pressed for time with this one, so opted for the spray paint. I only use Rustoleum when I do because I have found it yields better results than other brands. Chalk paint is always my favorite though! XOXO

Beautiful – as always! But can we talk musty odors? I have a cedar chest that reeks of moth balls. I have tried sanding it, odoban, charcoal bags, washing it with vinegar – nothing seems to work! Any thoughts? I hate to paint the cedar inside but might just have to! Thank you!!
Christy says
Thank you, Tammy! You want BOSS in clear. That is what I used on the insides of the three antique dressers I shared this summer that reaked of must. It worked like a charm. I haven’t used it specifically on mothballs, but I imagine it will work on that too. You can find it here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/693496894/dixie-belle-boss-clear
It may slightly darken the cedar, but that’s all! XOXO
Tammy says
Thank you so much!!! I knew you’d have an answer! I’m ok if it darkens the cedar. Right now, as is, the chest is almost unusable because of the mothball odor. Thanks again!

You’re welcome! XOXO

Oh so cute. I just love picnic baskets. You can do so much with them. Someone needs to take that piece and the matching dresser ASAP because they won’t last long in your booth. And…I’ll get the chance to visit soon. Can’t wait to see what you do with the next basket on Thursday.
