Hello sweet friends! I’m back today with an oldie, but goodie! I first shared this post two years ago as part of our Furniture Fixer Upper series! I’m going to share the links to my friends’ fabulous furniture makeovers from this day at the bottom also!
I scored this hutch at the thrift store for only $60. What a steal!!
Here’s a picture of it at the store:
I actually left it behind when I first saw it because I had just finished painting this Coastal Cottage Hutch, and all that work was still really fresh in my mind. I took this picture in case I had second thoughts. My Mom convinced me I should go back and get it, and I knew I would kick myself if I didn’t for that price! (They even helped me pick it up so I wouldn’t have to make two trips…thanks, Mom and Dad!)
Now the only thing I didn’t love about this one when I saw it was the glass panels seemed to be some kind of plastic, but I figured I could replace them with something else like I did with the last one, but guess what?
It was just a film someone had added to the back of the glass!
Yay!! I was so excited that I started peeling it off before getting a proper before photo, so I put it back just for you!
Here is the official before of this beauty:
It’s Thomasville with dovetail drawers so it is really nice quality, however the top was laminate.
So paint it is!
It is so beach-cottage now right? (Perfect for today since that is where I am right now!)
I was photographing this on a rainy day and it made for a weird washed out look.
With all that light from the windows in the room, it was hard to see the stencil I added to the lower doors, but you can see better close up…
I love this sweet detail. You can find this stencil HERE. This is the 6″X8″ size. (No affiliation.)
The paint color is Sunken Pool by Behr, an old favorite of mine when I was still making my own DIY chalk paint. (Recipe HERE.)
I started this makeover with a coat of white first:
That way a little white would come through here and there when sanding, and it provided a nice bright first coat for my blue. I only needed one coat of the Sunken Pool!
I decided to keep the original paneling on the back. I think it has a nice cottage-inspired feel when painted.
Some fresh roses from my garden (wink wink)…
(See how I made this little arrangement HERE if you missed it.)
I replaced the hardware on the doors with these pulls from Hobby Lobby:
I filled in the old holes in the drawers with wood filler and opted for these handles instead, also from Hobby Lobby:
To line the drawers, I found this fabric in my stash that actually used to be a shower curtain from Target. I picked it up for $3 at the thrift store a few years ago:
I attached it using matte Mod Podge. It matches perfectly! You can see what else I used this fabric on HERE.
I always paint my hutches white because they sell quickly and make a nice profit, but I couldn’t resist this pretty blue.
I did paint another one blue before (See it HERE.), but it took quite a while for it to sell. Luckily, this one did not last long!
Here’s my friends’ pieces you can check out too!
Jack has his “graduation” today. They all have individual appointments to walk for their diploma. I’m pretty sure ugly crying will be involved!
I’ll see y’all back here sharing what I did with these wood scraps to solve a problem in our back yard:
UPDATE: No need to wait! See what I built with these wood scraps HERE now!
XOXO,
Don’t Miss a Thing!
If you like what you see, there are several ways to follow along!

Wow I remember when you did this one, it turned out so beautiful!! It is ok to ugly cry, it happens to the best of us! I am sitting here thinking about when my children graduated, lots of ugly crying!! I have 4 children and my baby just turned 30 last year, let me tell you there has been a lot of ugly crying over the years, and just to warn you there will be a lot more!!! Loved this hutch make over! I just went on and ordered the stencil because I have seen you use it in lots of projects and it is a timeless stencil!
Christy says
Thank you, Mary! Jack’s graduation was done by appointment, one student at a time and it went so fast that I didn’t have time to get to the ugly crying ha ha! I’m sure there will be more to come like you said though! That stencil is timeless…I’ve used it on several things! Have a great weekend! XOXO
Christina says
Christy, this is such a pretty makeover! I adore how you “distress” just a tiny bit. The color is perfect and I love the fabric you had for the drawers. Way to go!!
Enjoy your weekend!
Christy says
Thanks so much, Christina! I enjoyed doing this one! XOXO
Wanda says
Congratulations to your son!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Wanda!! XOXO
Liza T. says
This is beautiful. As always, a great job! A question for you….do you paint the inside of the cabinets on the bottom? Do you usually paint inside the drawers if you don’t line them? On this piece, it looks like maybe not? Do you paint the outside of the drawers on the sides? I’m looking at painting an old dresser and use all of your posts as inspiration. Keep them coming!
Christy says
Thank you, Liza! I don’t usually paint the insides of the cabinet or any part of the drawer besides the front unless they are in terrible condition. Good luck with your dresser! XOXO
J Riley says
Hi! I love the color. How did you prep the laminate for painting??
Christy says
Hi J! With laminate I usually just go right to painting as chalk paint adheres so well to just about any surface, but it wouldn’t hurt to give it a light sanding first. XO
Donna Nance says
The hutch looks ever so much better! It is very similar in style to the Tell City Furniture hutch I have. It belonged to my late MIL and has morphed into an ugly ’80’s orange.
Christy says
Thank you, Donna! It’s amazing what paint can do!! XOXO
Becky Pearrow says
The hutch upcycle is absolutely gorgeous. I can readily see why it sold quickly. Love that particular blue!
You are great. Keep those great ideas coming.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Becky! This is a great blue! XOXO
Julie Ritter says
Oh my gosh I love the entire make over. What a fabulous find in a shower curtain of all things. I do peruse the linens while in the thrift stores, but I never thought of shower curtains : )
When you put the material in the drawers you put modge podge on the wood and then place the material over top? You do not modge podge over the top of the material right?
It matches the paint so perfectly. Love it.
Christy says
Thank you, Julie!! I have done several projects from that shower curtain lol! No, I don’t put MP over the fabric. There is no need, but I would add a coat on top if I were using paper. XOXO
ROSE LEFEBVRE says
OH MY GOSH!!! I love the color, the stencil and everything about this piece. It looks 200% better!!!!
Christy says
Thank you, Rose!! XOXO
Lizzy says
Beautiful! It’s just perfect!
Christy says
Thank you, Lizzy! XOXO
Sue Mellette says
Love the color and the beautiful makeover! So light and airy. My mom has a small hutch that is brown wood with wooden shutters at the bottom. You have given me several ideas of how to refresh hers! As always, thanks for sharing.
Christy says
Thank you, Sue! I love the shutter doors… they paint up so pretty! XOXO
Kerry says
Did you sand the hutch before painting? I bought a hutch and the majority is laminate. If I need to sand do I do it before or after I prime it? Thanks for any help!
Christy says
Hi Kerry! Chalk paint adheres so well to so many surfaces that I usually just start painting. It definitely wouldn’t hurt to give the laminate surface a quick sanding before painting though. And no priming either with chalk paint unless you have an older antique cherry or mahogany piece that might possibly bleed-through!
Lynette says
I love your pieces and would love to do a bedroom set. If the piece was painted previously, would you recommend stripping the paint back to the original base or just deglossing and then chalk paint?
Christy says
Thank you, Lynette! If the current paint job is intact and not peeling/shipping, I would paint right over it. If it is done in a gloss or oil based paint, lightly sand first. 🙂
Geri Juen says
Did you make chalk paint for this project? You mentioned how to make it, but wasn’t sure if this Behr paint you used her was chalk paint.
Christy says
Hi Geri! Ever since I became a retailer for Dixie Belle over a year ago, I don’t make my own paint much anymore. This is a Dixie Belle color. XO
Anne says
Can you post the final selling price for your items in your post? The wonderful stories of your amazing buys along with the updates to the piece just don’t seem complete without knowing how well you did on the sale compared to your purchase price. Thank you.
Christy says
Hi Anne! Usually when I post, my pieces are still here waiting to be priced and loaded up for the shop, so I don’t even know what I’m going to price them for, let alone what they sell for. I can see how that would be nice to see though! XOXO
