Hello sweet friends, welcome to Furniture Fixer Upper Day!! I get together with some super talented gals on the fourth Thursday of each month to share fabulous furniture makeovers. So you get a few bonus makeovers at the bottom of this post, AND I’m also hosting a fun giveaway so look for those details at the very bottom! 🙂
Today I’m sharing this hutch I scored at the thrift store for only $60!
Here’s a picture of it at the store:
I actually left it behind when I saw it because I had just finished painting this Coastal Cottage Hutch for our last Furniture Fixer Upper day, and all that work was still really fresh in my mind. I took this picture in case I changed my mind. My Mom convinced me I should go back and get it, and I knew I would kick myself if I didn’t for that price! (They even helped me pick it up so I wouldn’t have to make two trips…thanks Mom and Dad!)
I knew I needed to get it out of the garage since I promised my Hubby I wasn’t going to clutter our new garage with furniture like I did the last one. (Oopsie! How does it fill up so fast??) So I decided it would be perfect to make over for today!
Now the only thing I didn’t love about this one when I saw it was the glass panels seemed to be some kind of plastic, but I figured I could replace them with something else like I did with the last one, but guess what?
It was just a film someone had added to the back of the glass!
Yay!! I was so excited that I started peeling it off before getting a proper before photo, so I put it back just for you!
Here is the official before of this beauty:
It’s Thomasville with dovetail drawers so it is really nice quality, however the top was laminate.
So paint it is!
It is so beach-cottage right?
With all the light from the windows in the room, it’s hard to see the stencil I added to the lower doors, but you can see it better close up…
I love this sweet detail. You can find this stencil HERE. This is the 6″X8″ size. (No affiliation.)
The paint color is Sunken Pool by Behr, a favorite blue of mine, that I made into DIY chalk paint. (Recipe HERE.)
I started this makeover with a coat of white first:
That way a little white would come through here and there when sanding and it provided a nice bright first coat for my blue. I only needed one coat of the Sunken Pool!
Remember my little chair from the antique desk I shared last week…
It makes for a cute prop!
I decided to keep the original paneling. I think it has a nice cottage-inspired feel when painted.
Some fresh roses from my garden (wink wink)…
(See how I made this little arrangement HERE if you missed it.)
I replaced the hardware on the doors with these pulls from Hobby Lobby:
I filled in the old holes in the drawers with wood filler and opted for these handles instead, also from Hobby Lobby:
To line the drawers, I found this fabric in my stash that actually used to be a shower curtain from Target. I picked it up for $3 at the thrift store a couple of years ago:
I attached it using matte Mod Podge. It matches perfectly! You can see what else I used this fabric on HERE.
I always paint my hutches white because they sell quickly and make a nice profit, but I couldn’t resist this pretty blue. I did paint one blue last year (See it HERE.), and it took quite a while for it to sell, so fingers crossed this one will go more quickly!
Don’t forget to check out what my friends are making over today too! 🙂
(Larissa from Prodigal Pieces and Marie from The Interior Frugalista will be back next month!)

Kate Lehman says
Hi Christy, Need to say….another gorgeous hutch makeover! I have a secondhand/ thrift shop route that I take regularly, searching searching searching for a hutch that I can justify buying…. I want to come with you! Your US$60 hutch converts to about AUS$77.50 – which equates to what I have seen in my end of Tasmania for two hundred dollars. I will continue my search, and I wanted to say once more, well done plus I am loving that delicate shade of paint [ Sunken Pool]. It is my new fave colour. Thank you for all your inspiration. best regards Kate
Christy says
Thank you so much, Kate! This was originally $80, but on Tuesdays they offer an extra 25% off…that sealed the deal for me! And this is one of my favorite colors for sure. Hoping it sells now! XOXO
Christina in SW FL says
Lovely makeover Christy. I was expecting white and not sure how I feel about the very light blue. I’m glad it was funky window film which came right off. May this sell very quickly in your shop!
Christy says
Thanks, Christina! I do usually paint large pieces like this white, and of course you know that is my favorite as well. Took a chance on this blue since everything I’ve put in my booth that is this color has sold…here’s hoping! Have a great weekend! XOXO
April says
What base would you have used if you were doing white?
Christy says
Hi April! I would have just started painting it white. No primer needed since I used chalk paint and thankfully this kind of wood doesn’t normally bleed through. You can read more on how I chalk paint furniture here: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/how-to-paint-furniture-using-chalk-paint/ XO
Sandi says
What a beautiful transformation! Love the paint color and the new hardware!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Sandi! XOXO
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says
Great find and turned out so pretty! Love the blue and the fabric! I keep passing these beauties up because they are so big… and I’m old, lol, but maybe I shouldn’t! 😉 xoxo
Christy says
Thanks, Nancy! I was definitely not ready to tackle another hutch so soon, but I just couldn’t pass up such a great deal! I found this at the CHKD where I found my shelf I did for our video. And girl, you are NOT old! And besides…that’s what you have Wally for! 🙂 XOXO
Pam Jackson says
Sometime a little paint and love can make the difference! That looks really great.
Christy says
So true, Pam! Thank you! XO
Amy says
This is going on my list of the projects I love the most!! Absolutely Stunning!! Yep, I’m in love!
Christy says
Oh yay! Thank you so much, my friend! I was excited to try this pretty blue on a large piece…hoping someone else loves it as much as we do! XOXO
Amy says
They definitely will!!
Kelly says
I’m very new to this makeover stuff. Why do you use chalk paint and/or make it instead of regular paint?
Christy says
Hi Kelly! The biggest benefit of using chalk paint verses regular paint is that there is no prep required when using chalk paint, so no sanding! If you like a very clean, new look to your painted furniture, regular paint would be the way to go, but if you like a little shabby, chalk paint all the way! 🙂 I have a tutorial for using chalk paint if you want to learn more here: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/how-to-paint-furniture-using-chalk-paint/ XO
Cecilia says
It turned out amazing! Glad you went back for it…it’s the perfect size. Most are so large but this one would fit perfectly in most homes. I’d buy it if I needed one!
Christy says
Thank you, Cecilia! I’m so glad I went back for it as well, and you’re right…it is a nice petite size! XOXO
Kim from MI ???? says
I just love love love your hutch! I am keeping my eyes out for one to make pretty again! ????
You give me so much inspiration!!! Wished the give away was on your blog and not FB, not a FB gal.
Enjoy spring Christy! ????????????
Christy says
I’m so glad you like it, Kim!! Thank you so much! And I’m so sorry about the giveaway, but I’ll be hosting one here in April! 🙂 XO
Eileen says
Hi Christy,
Do you know if you can make home made magnetic paint?
Christy says
Hi Eileen! I don’t know…I haven’t seen a DIY version anywhere!
MaryJean says
Wow, only $60. Your mom was right, you can’t pass that up! I love what you did to it! Thanks for the response regarding the lampshade. I’m going to give it a try. xoxo
Christy says
Yes I had to go back for it! Thank you, Mary Jean! Good luck with your shade! 🙂

Nanette says
As usual, a beautiful job Christy! You didn’t have to use primer? No bleed through?
Christy says
Thank you, Nanette! No bleed through on this one, thank goodness, so no primer necessary! XOXO
Korinne Suter says
Love this! You are so talented and creative. And love the fabric a.k.a. shower curtain you used in the drawers and to make the bulletin board. You inspire me!
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Korinne! I love that you are inspired! XOXO
Robyn Wright says

Christy says

Marcie Lovett says
Beautiful makeover! I bet it sells quickly. You have the best craft junk, Christy.
Christy says
Thanks, Marcie! I do have good craft junk ha ha…these giveaways help me to keep it under control…another giveaway coming to the blog in April! XOXO
Ginny says
I’m a new reader and am so glad I found you! Your transformations are amazing and make me want to try some. Unfortunately, I have several projects I’ve started and not yet finished, so those must come first. This china cabinet makeover/hutch looks a lot like one my MIL has and I just love the light blue you used on yours. I took a quick look at your chalk paint tutorial but didn’t see an answer to this question: if you are painting bare wood, do you need to prime or prep first? One of my projects is a step stool for my granddaughter and I have sanded almost all the paint off (the rest must come off by hand since I can’t get my sander in some areas). The paint was extremely difficult to sand, even with coarse sandpaper, so I wanted to get it all off before re-painting it. I purchased some chalk paint when I first started the project and I want to make sure I do this right! Thanks for your help – and all the inspiration!
Christy says
Hi Ginny and welcome! Great question! You do not have to prime bare wood first, but bare wood will soak up the paint, so a primer coat will save on paint. You can just do a quick coat of spray primer. Good luck and thank you! XO
susan says
Oh it’s soooo pretty! I have a monster hutch in the garage now that my husband got for $12.50. Was going to paint it white also but I do love that color! Maybe I’ll be inspired now to do it! It’s just so big! ???? All of your pieces inspire me!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Susan! Wow, $12.50? Deal of the century there! Yes hutches are a pain to paint for sure…it does help if you can remove the back though! Good luck! XOXO
Jen @ Girl in the Garage says
So gorgeous, Christy! It looks stunning in blue – I’m in love with the fabric in the drawers too! Oh- if you have any tips for photographing glass doors, send them my way. 🙂
Christy says
Thanks, Jen! I’m considering whipping up a couple of pillows for my living room with the rest of that fabric, I just love it so much! Yeah glass doors…they’re tough. You can set your timer on your camera (on a tripod) and jump out of the way so the reflection is minimal. Then edit the reflection later so you can’t see the camera. Or you can take the photos on an angle. That’s all I got lol. XOXO
Margie says
Absolutely love the color & can’t imagine it sitting very long.
Christy says
Thank you, Margie! everything I put in my booth that is this color sells quickly, so here’s hoping! XOXO
Marie-The Interior Frugalista says
Nice price for this one, don’t blame you for going back. Good call keeping the original back because it looks so good painted. Swooning over the color! That shower curtain remanent is just too dang perfect. I have no doubt this one is going to sell quickly.
Christy says
Thank you, Marie! I’m so glad I went back for it! Hoping it doesn’t last long! XOXO
Francine Parrett says
I have used wood filler to fill unwanted holes but don’t like the fact that they show thru when i paint. Cant seem to fill enough to not get a small ridge. using a putty knife the product seems to always follow the knife out of the hole if that makes sense. do you seal over the filler before painting?
Christy says
Hi Francine! I almost always have to go back and add a little more a second time. I get the best results when I let it dry for a couple of days so it is good and hard! XO
Naomi S. says
Christy, that is just gorgeous! The blue gives it a unique coastal feel and I LOVE the hardware you chose for the doors and drawers. I’m just amazed at how great it turned out. When I saw it before you painted it I tho’t it was nice, but kind of boring. Not anymore!
Aren’t you glad you bought it and did all that work on it? If I had a coastal cottage or a farmhouse kitchen I would buy it in a minute!
Christy says
Thank you, Naomi! Sometimes I’m even still surprised what paint can do for a boring piece of furniture lol! XOXO
Lizzy Leff says
I’m in love! And that color — SO GOOD!!!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Lizzy! XO
Julie Briones says
I LOVE this, Christy… so, if I can get my LL to let me paint my awful reddish/gold kitchen cupboards in a white, I would SO paint my Hoosier in Sunken Pool! So pretty! I think a little stencil or graphic will be in order, too! Thanks, again, for the inspiration!
Christy says
OOH that would look SO pretty!! I’m considering this for my kitchen island when I finally tackle my own cabinets. Thanks, Julie! XOXO
Dixie Lee says
Gorgeous! I think that if you were in an east coast state, that would sell like gangbusters since Coastal Style is big here!
Christy says
Thanks, Dixie! I’m in luck because I am in Virginia Beach, right on the Atlantic! And you are right…anything I paint in this color sells well, so hoping this will too! XOXO
Mary says
100% pure GORGEOUSNESS!!! It makes me ????, hope it sells fast.
Christy says
Oh yay! I’m so glad you like it, Mary!! Thank you!! XOXO
Becky says
I know the magic you work on these pieces, but still- wow. I studied up all the sad, boring, dated, ugly details in the before picture…, scrolled to the after… and did my usual gasp of amazement, haha! “Lovely” is THE word here. “Gorgeous” is quite reasonable also. What a pretty end result! If it doesn’t get snapped up someone is going to have to do some serious re-educating people as to the joys of the color blue!!!
Christy says
Aww thanks, Becky! I am so glad I can still surprise you sometimes ha ha! I am really enjoying it here in my office, but I know it has to go soon boo hoo! XOXO
Maria says
Amazing how the color has transformed this into a beauty!
Christy says
Thank you, Maria! I am really loving this color! 🙂 XO
Cheryl Lawson says
Wow! What an amazing job you did on that hutch. I love the color. Thanks for sharing the tutorial. Wishing you and your family a Happy Easter and excited to follow your blog. ~Cheryl
Christy says
Thank you, Cheryl! I would paint everything that color if I could ha ha. Happy Easter to you and yours and thank you for following along with me! XOXO
Sheila DelCharco says
I love how all the scroll-y details come out with the paint! And yes, the backing looks so good painted!
Christy says
Thank you, Sheila! I almost made the mistake of removing the dated paneling on another hutch, but decided to try painting it…and yep…looked pretty darn good! ???? XO
Karina says
This is stunning! My in-laws have a hutch they are wanting to get rid of and I thought I might try something like this out. I was just wondering if you sanded it at all? Thank you!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Karina! I did not sand as there is no need to when using chalk paint. You can visit my chalk painting furniture tutorial HERE. 🙂
Judi Knoop says
That dresser is gorgeous! I’m new to your site, so glad I stumbled on it. One question – the white distressed door knobs you used, I can’t find on the Hobby Lobby site. I have found the drawer pulls but they don’t seem to have the knobs – would they be discontinued? I have an old leadlight kitchen cupboard I’m going to makeover, and these knobs and drawer pulls are exactly what I’m after! Any suggestions where else I might find those knobs? I’m from Tasmania, Australia. Thanks, Judi.
Christy says
Thsnk you, Judi, and welcome!! Here is a link to those knobs on the hobby Lobby website: https://www.hobbylobby.com/Home-Decor-Frames/Knobs-Hardware/Knobs/Distressed-White-Swirl-Metal-Knob/p/80729739. Hope this helps and best of luck with your cabinet! Enjoy the warmth…it’s freezing here! XO
Judi K says
Hi Christy,
Thank you so much – I found them! (They are under a different number than the one above). When I realised yours were actually oval not round, they were easy to find.
Problem is, that site doesn’t ship internationally – but they are on special, so I am going to send them to a friend in Texas and get her to ship them to me. Problem solved!
Thanks again!
Christy says
Oh great! I’m so glad you were able to work it out! 🙂
