Sweet friends, I am SO excited to have a brand new haul to play with!! Today, I’m sharing an 80’s sofa table makeover that was one of several pieces I picked up while yard saling a couple of weeks ago.
I like to share my new hauls before diving in, but I’m joining my Furniture Fixer Upper girls today, so I borrowed this piece from that haul, and I’ll be back on Tuesday to share the rest of the goodies I have for this round!
Be sure to be on the lookout for what my friends are sharing today down below.
Here is my first gem, this dated sofa table I picked up for $30:
It’s probably from the 80’s and has withstood a few bumps and bruises over the years, but these pieces with that bead board-like detail make for great coastal pieces when painted! For 30 bucks, I scooped it right on up!
Clean
The first order of business with any furniture makeover is to give it a thorough cleaning.
I mixed one TBSP of my go-to paint prep cleaner, White Lightning, into a half gallon of warm water…
Then I wiped the table down thoroughly. These terrycloth applicator pads are perfect for the job:
White Lightning is a degreaser and deglosser, so gloves are recommended. I swapped out my dirty water for clean water and gave it another wipe down to remove any residue.
Paint
Luckily, this was not one of those needy antique pieces I’m so drawn to. With little risk of bleed through, I got straight to painting!
I painted the top in Cotton and gave the base a custom mix of Hurricane Gray and Cotton:
I applied two coats with my Mini angle brush for a super smooth finish:
I had this custom mixed color left over from this recent chair makeover…
I thought it would be perfect here too!
Sand
Once that was dry, I sanded all over using 220 grit sandpaper…
I cleaned up any sanding dust with my shop vac:
Seal
All that was left to do was seal!
I used my favorite sealer for furniture, Clear Coat in Satin, applying it with the blue sponge applicator which makes it so easy!
If you expect your furniture to take on heavy abuse or be exposed to liquid, you can opt for Gator Hide instead. Satin Clear Coat is plenty of protection in most cases.
And that’s it!
The After
All this sofa table needed was a little paint love!
Paint erased years off of this dated piece!
And just a touch of subtle distressing adds a casual feel…
I kept the original hardware on the front but painted it in Cotton…
Does it feel more coastal now?
The planked looking top gives a bit of that vibe for sure…
This drawer is fake or I would have added something sweet inside.
That framed art is something I shared not too long ago…it was a thrift store frame I painted. I then added this Maison de Paris transfer to create new art:
I’m so glad I kept it…I’ve enjoyed staging with it.
I’ve gotten over 20 brand new Redesign with Prima transfer designs in my Etsy Shop if you missed them.
I’ve also restocked a few that were sold out.
I hope you enjoyed this transformation today…it’s amazing what paint alone can do!
Don’t forget to check out what my friends have for you today as well!

It’s amazing how much “weight” this piece lost with painting it a lighter color, if you know what I mean. Great job of updating this, Christy!
Christy says
Absolutely! It was very heavy looking before for sure. Thank you, C! XOXO

As you know, I love this, Christy! I want to try Silk in Baja Gray on a blanket chest that is stained red. I’ve checked your blog and others and Silk is touted as not having to use Boss. However, before I decided on Silk, I purchased some Boss in gray – will it hurt to use Boss under the Silk? Or should I stick with Chalk? I’m really concerned about this red stain. Thanks.
Christy says
Thank you, Susan! Although the Silk is said to have a stain blocker in it, I still use BOSS on those red pieces. Apply one coat and allow it to dry overnight before painting. I hope that helps! XOXO
Susan Duffy says
Thanks so much!
Christy says
You’re welcome! XO

Needed….why people liked such dark wood tones back yonder is beyond me. It’s so heavy and depressing. I love me some craftsman, or even any paneled/ wainscoted rooms but when it’s stained dark it is just too much. Anywhoo- this sofa table turned out great. It is bright and cheery now!
Christy says
I agree! When my parents purchased our first home back in the mid eighties, the walls were covered in brown paneling and I myself remember loving it lol. It can go now! Thanks, Niki! XOXO
Marcie Lovett says
So lovely, Christy! Not terribly attractive before, now it would fit in so many rooms.
Christy says
Thank you, my friend! Paint worked wonders on this one for sure! XOXO
Caye Cooper says

That table looks gorgeous! I love the planked top and beadboard detailing. You really made it shine!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Janet! XOXO
Tammy Anderson says
It looks so fresh and pretty now! You have inspired me to paint a dresser with similar-looking wood. Just curious- how did you know it wouldn’t bleed through?
Christy says
Thank you, Tammy! It’s usually the older antique red pieces like cherry, mahogany and antique oak that like to bleed through. These pieces from the 80’s paint up easily. You can always start painting and if you get bleed through, add a coat of BOSS, wait overnight, and then keep painting. XOXO
Michele M. says
WOW. What a shocking difference some paint can make. It looks awesome. I don’t love the hardware but love love love the painted piece.
It looks so today!!!! Well done, ma’am! Can’t wait to see the rest of your new haul. I am so excited!!!
Have a fun and safe and happy Memorial Day weekend.
Christy says
Right?? Paint sure can work some magic! Thanks, Michele! Enjoy your holiday weekend too! XOXO
Cheryl says
Wow!! It’s so amazing what paint can do. It no longer looks like it was from the 80’s!
