Hello amazing friends and welcome to Furniture Fixer Upper day!! Not only do I have a furniture flip for you today, so do my friends, so be on the lookout for those at the end of this post!
Today I’m sharing another piece from my Mother’s Day Haul! I am almost done with that load as well!
My piece for today is this beautifully detailed twin bed:
I rarely keep a headboard or footboard as-is. I usually repurpose it in some way, or turn it into a bench, but this one was kind of small to repurpose as a bench. Since I had both the headboard and footboard, I just decided to paint them so they could continue their job as a bed.
I almost felt bad about painting this one. It came with the rails and slats as well, but the metal piece inside the headboard where the side rail attaches was missing. It will be easy enough for the new owners to just purchase a bed frame.
This bed has a masculine feel to me, so I decided to pick out a pretty blue called Yankee Blue for this one:
I gave everything but the spindles two coats. I painted the spindles in Dusty Blue:
I wanted this set to have a more weathered, coastal feel, and I really wanted to highlight all those cool details, so I followed up by applying white wax:
I brushed it on in sections and buffed it off with a soft clean cloth, going in the direction of the grain.
Here you can see the difference with the wax added:
I did not apply clear wax first as I did using the black wax HERE and HERE because I wanted the white wax to really show up.
You can really see all those details now…
I love this pretty Dusty Blue on the spindles…
Isn’t this baby blanket the sweetest?
It has rocking horses right in the pattern. I found it at the thrift store and had to buy it. The horse and that basket are also thrift store finds that I painted.
A sweet and simple makeover for a sweet little one!
Don’t go anywhere just yet; my friends have more furniture makeovers for you today!
And that is another one done!!

All I have left is the spindle bed, which has some damage that I still need to figure out how to remedy, and the dresser in the bottom left corner, which I have already started prepping!
Here’s the only other headboards I’ve redone that I actually kept as headboards:
Remember these? See how they turned out HERE!

Any way, I LOVE how your bed turned out, and I was so shocked that you didn’t make a bench out of it! It turned out great as a bed though! Some boy is going to have sweet dreams in that bed for sure!! Thanks for the great laugh this morning, your blog always makes my Tuesdays and Thursday GREAT!!
Christy says
Oh my…ha ha! I can’t believe I didn’t catch that…at least it was good for a laugh lol! Thanks, Mary! It was a bit small for a bench, I thought, but knew it would make a cute bed for a little one! Petra says
You did the right thing with that bed frame – it definitely has a masculine look to it – and that colour with the white wax is perfection 😀 One of the nicest bed frames I’ve seen xo

Beautiful job again Christy! You are right about the masculine feel it originally was my father’s first bed after leaving the crib. My dad was born in 1927. It was later a bed for me, then my son and then my daughter. It was not easy to give up, but I am sure that it will bring much joy to a new lucky owner. Who knows maybe they will have it in their family for the next 90 years!
Christy says
Thank you, Mary! I love hearing the history of it. Thank you for sharing! It is a lovely bed and I hope it is enjoyed for many more years to come too! I have started on your dresser woohoo! XOXO
Rosie says
Hi Christy! It turned out soooo nice. I love the yankee blue and the white wax does bring out the details. Need to keep that in mind for when I have a project like that to do. As usual beautiful makeover! Have a good weekend and stay safe🤗
Christy says
Thank you so much, Rosie! The Yankee blue and white wax so play so nicely together. Enjoy your weekend too! XOXO
Kellee Kroll says
Where is this wall in your photo? It’s so cool! And really sets off the headboard. Is it on the outside of your home? I’d love a staging wall like that!
Christy says
Thanks, Kellee! This is a feature wall in my office. It is a product called Airstone and you can see more of it here if you like: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/office-feature-wall-reveal-with-airstone/ XOXO

Wow, you are amazing! You take something that is …. ugly or
doesn’t look like much and make it look amazing, bringing out all of its beauty! You have such vision, I wish I had that. You make me look at items differently, painted up and gorgeous. I think the saying is from ugly duckling to beautiful swan. Thank you for the ideas!
Christy says
Aww you are so sweet, Linda, thank you so much!! XOXO

I have a metal queen headboard that I just love, but have bought a king size bed. How would you go about adding on to it to make it about 8 inches wider on both sides or should I just give up??
Love everything you do!
Christy says
Ooh I’m stumped on that one, Ivana! I don’t have any experience working with metal. Thank you!! XOXO
Marian says
Oh Christy, I really like how this bed turned out! The white wax is perfect. It really brings out all of the details in the wood. This is a winner! Are you going to put this in your booth?
Christy says
Thank you, Marian! I love all those pretty details and now you can see them! Yep, this will head to my booth this weekend! XOXO
Patty says

Cecilia from Georgia says
Christy, I think you made a good choice to keep this as a bed. I love the details and those colors are lovely together. It looks like you really slathered he white wax on; was that because you wanted it to show up more? Will the wax be good to protect the bed from bumps and scratches or should it be sealed if going in a child’s bedroom?
Christy says
Thank you, Cecilia! I loved playing with these pretty blues. The wax is a sealer also, so it is all set! Have a great weekend! XOXO
susan osborne says
Hi, Christy, love all your projects…but most anxiously awaiting your dining table and chairs makeover, and seeing it on your newly finished porch. I am thinking about putting my pressed back six chairs and matching table on my enclosed front porch. Also possibly painting the dining set…I use that space and that set about 4 times a year, it takes up valuable space in my small house, and I think it might look great on the porch, with all the windows, maybe mini lights in the windows?
So, no pressure, lol, but please hurry!
Christy says
Hi Susan! Thank you! You are thinking of my dear friend, Nancy from Artsy Chicks Rule. She is the one with the table and chairs that she is redoing for her porch ha ha! People confuse us all the time as we have very similar styles! XOXO
Jen @ Girl in the Garage says
You turned this old headboard into such a beauty, Christy! Love the soft blues and white wax – it really brings out all the lovely details. xo
Christy says
Thank you so much, my friend! I can just picture it in a sweet baby’s room! XOXO
Annie says

Sweet twin bed set find, Christy! Your local thrift stores have a much better stash than mine. Very pretty…ahem…handsome makeover that I’m sure won’t last long in your booth. I’m totally jealous of that rocking horse. I’ve been on the hunt for one for years.
Christy says
Thank you, Marie! This awesome bed was one of the several items a local reader blessed me with on Mother’s Day! It had belonged to her father! I do get lucky sometimes at our thrift stores, but it is getting harder and harder! That little rocking horse has been so fun for staging…I hope you find one! XOXO
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says
This turned out so great! Love the colors! I have about 3 headboard, footboards I need to get busy on! One day! Lol
Christy says
Thanks, Nancy! It is a sweet one…it had belonged to the father of the lady who gifted me all those pieces. It was fantastic to hear the history. They all used it as children. She didn’t provide those details till after I wrote my post, but I would have liked to include that history. You should create your next haul from things you already have…it is amazing what you can get done that way, and you will feel so good to have them done! XOXO
Lizzy says
I love them! Excellent color choices.
Christy says
Thank you, Lizzy! XOXO
Kim Banko says
Wow! You have inspired me to try white wax! It almost looks like denim to me now. Just love it!
Christy says
Yay! Thank you! It really does look like denim! XOXO
Alice says
I was wondering if you have help prepping , painting sanding etc. You seem to get so much done, I love your work
Christy says
Hi Alice! Thank you so much! That would be so incredibly helpful, but I would be standing over the poor person micro-managing them the whole time lol. I do it all. XOXO
