Hello lovelies! I’m back with my first piece from my Operation Redo Haul, and it was the perfect piece for applying Whitewash Glaze!
Here’s a reminder of how this piece looked at the very beginning:
As I mentioned before, my mom had painted this piece way back in 2013 for a craft market we did together, and it was one of just a couple of pieces that didn’t sell.
The First Makeover
It sat in my garage for many years before I finally redid it to look like this:
The top got a magnolia transfer:
You can see the original makeover HERE.
I loved how this one turned out, but it’s been sitting way too long in my booth, so I decided to bring it home and neutralize it a bit, figuring it was a bit specific in taste.
Also, someone made a great point in the comments on Tuesday. She suggested that when people are looking for a side table or night table, they are also probably looking for a piece that has storage.
And that makes total sense…I don’t know why that hadn’t even occurred to me? The more function something offers, the better! So thank you, kind reader, for that insight!
Perhaps this redo will help, and maybe not, but we shall see! I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Makeover Number Two
I started this redo by sanding the transfer smooth with my mini cat sander:
I’ve got the cordless version, but it comes in a traditional corded version also.
Since I planned to paint over the transfer, I just sanded until it was smooth to the touch starting with 120 grit sandpaper and finishing with 220 grit sandpaper to smooth everything out. I left the rest as is.
My piece was pretty clean, so I just wiped away any dust and started painting with one of my favorite neutral colors: Driftwood. I was able to paint right over the existing sealer and gave it two coats.
Applying Whitewash Glaze
The final step was applying Whitewash Glaze over the Driftwood using a chip brush:
I worked in small sections applying the glaze and then wiped it right back off with a clean soft cloth:
I applied the glaze right over the paint, and I just love the effect!
If you are using a darker glaze, you will want to seal with Clear Coat first or the chalk paint will really soak up the color. However, there is no need to seal first when using it over the Silk paint since it already has a built-in topcoat!
Dixie Belle glazes come in SIX colors:
- Black, Grunge Gray
- Van Dyke Brown
- Pearlescent
- Copper Bronze
- Hi Ho Silver
- Gold Shimmer
- And of course, Whitewash
I sell quite a few glazes but rarely use glaze on own my pieces. I decided it was time to give it a go!
The glaze acts like a topcoat, so there is no need to seal over the top!
The After
This version is a little less fancy!
But I love the relaxed feel that whitewashing gave it!
Let’s get in real close so you can see!
This table will definitely fit into someone’s decor style now.
And the best part is, creating this look was SO easy to do!
I will definitely use this glaze again…and again!
Now for the real test…let’s see if we can get this piece SOLD!
That’s one down, five to go!
Remember my sister whose pine kitchen we redid a couple of years ago? Her oldest son is getting married on Tuesday (2-22-22), so we have family coming in town this weekend and staying through the week, so I’ll be revisitng an antique cabinet door that I repurposed with the help of this pile of lumber:
Update: See what this and the door became HERE now!
Have a wonderful weekend!
XOXO,
Don’t Miss a Thing!

It is so pretty, but I thought it was pretty before. How confusing to my brain is all of that! LOL! I hope it sells for you! I know I would buy it if I lived closer! How fun that your nephew is getting married 2/22/22! He should always remember his anniversary with that date. He for sure will be in the dog house if he forgets it, LOL! Have fun and congratulations to your sister and your brother in law!
Christy says
Thank you, Mary! I liked it before too lol. I just dropped it back off at my booth, so we’ll see what happens! And yes, we are all looking forward to this wedding! I thought the date was fun, and no excuses for missing his anniversary ever ha ha!! XOXO
Janice Holt says
Pretty now and pretty before. Hope it sells for you now but surprised it didn’t before. Have a good week-end.
Christy says
Thank you, Janice! I dropped it back off today, so we’ll see what happens! Have a wonderful weekend too! XOXO
MrsSW says
Love the effect of the glaze, Christy, thanks for demonstrating. I have Pearlescent that I’m itching to use.
Sheila
Christy says
The glaze was so easy to use! I have used the pearlescent on hardware before to give it some shimmer, but I didn’t wipe it back. I really liked it! XOXO
Christina says
Oh I do love that white glaze! I rarely use a glaze either and learned the hard way to use clear something before using a dark wax. lol Hot mess! lol
I bet this little table flies out of your booth!!
Have a great rest of the week and weekend!!
Christy says
Thank you, Christina! Oh yes, the chalk paint will soak that dark glaze right on up lol! Hoping for a sale now! Happy weekend!! XOXO

I have been checking out your posts for some time now and have never written before, jus didn’t. But I want to let you know that your ideas and your make overs are beautiful. I have saved them with the idea of when I find something similar to your post I am going to try it! I am not good of thinking of my own ideas so I love getting ideas from you. Again, I love your posts and thank you so much for sharing 🙂 have a wonderful day and see you next time,
Bette Ware
Christy says
Thank you, Bette! I appreciate that so much, and I’m so glad to have given you some ideas for your own pieces! Thank you for following along with me!! XOXO

Love the redo! Yes it’s preferable. Another reason I love your site: if I don’t like something I do, you give me courage to redo it!! Thanks!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Bev! Absolutely! If you don’t love it…you can always redo it! XOXO
Cecilia says
It’s such a sweet little table! I love the whitewashed look too. Now it will fit in just about anywhere so fingers crossed it sells for you!
😊Cecilia
Christy says
Thank you, Cecilia! Yes, fingers crossed ha ha! XOXO
Niki says
Very soft and neutral! I hope that 3rd times a charm for you. It must be frustrating when things don’t sell, but the sense I get is that it doesn’t bother you much. See you Tuesday, have a great weekend!
Christy says
Me too, Niki! I dropped it off at my booth today, so we’ll see what happens! And I don’t mind redoing these smaller things so much because I get to share it with all of you! 😀 Enjoy your weekend too! XOXO
Robin says
That reader was correct. If your occasional side table or entryway table had a drawer it probably would’ve sold much faster. But it looks to be a cutie for a small entryway or a nice side table for a chair. Probably not a bedside table though. The redo is very nice.
Christy says
Yes, for sure! I will definitely keep that in mind when shopping in the future! It is a really versatile size though, so we’ll see how it goes now! XOXO
Cara says
Thank you for sharing, I’ve been wanting to try the transfers but was hesitant if I made a mistake how I could correct it? Good to know the sander removes it like it never happened! It’s so helpful to know these things before you begin a project. Plus, I have commitment issues lol, I never know if I will love something for the long haul before I actually see it.
Christy says
My pleasure, Cara! If you wanted to remove a transfer completely to show the wood again, it would take more work, but it wasn’t too bad at all smoothing it out to be repainted. And ha ha…yes! It is hard to commit to something you might not love five years from now, hence the reason all of my own furniture is white ha ha! XOXO
Marcie Lovett says
I’m so sad the magnolia is gone 😢but now that sweet table is going to appeal to so many people that it probably already sold!
Wishing joy to the new couple and congratulations to the whole family on the upcoming wedding 🧡
Christy says
Thank you, Marcie!! I was sad to see the magnolia go too boo hoo, but you’re right, it will appeal to more people now! And thank you for the congrats…we are looking forward to it! XOXO
Leah says
Christy,
Youre right, I like this neutral redo so much better! As you often say, it let’s the beautiful curves (and angles) show. I wish your booth was closer!
Christy says
Thank you, Leah! Yes! And hopefully it will appeal to more people now too. I wish you were closer also!! XOXO
Cecilia from Georgia says
What a difference! Do you think the White Magic Voodoo gel stain will give a similar look? I already have it! This is a cool haul makeover; I have to look at some of my inventory and see if there’s any I can give a new look to. Thanks for the ideas!
Christy says
Right?? And yes! I think the VooDoo would give a very similar effect! I have seen people use the gel stains as a glaze quite often. You would still want to seal it with something after, but if it saves you having to buy anything, I say go for it! XOXO
Rose E Lefebvre says
I like both versions but partial to the magnolia look. Surprised no one snatched it up.
Christy says
Thank you, Rose! I really liked that version too! Oh well, hopefully it will find its forever home now! XOXO
Vicki Clem says
This is so pretty! I could see it used by a window for plants or as a side table for a lamp, books and a drink coaster. I’m glad to know that the glazes don’t need a sealer! I like using glaze but don’t like the extra step of sealing. Thanks for sharing!
Christy says
Thank you, Vicki! Absolutely! I love being able to skip the sealing step too! XOXO
Michele M. says
Oh that looks great! I think it’s looked great in all its stages. ♥
I bet it sells fast – few interiors it wouldn’t look great in. Love the lines and
curves on this piece – and it is just a fabulous size. Good luck! Looks great!
Christy says
Thank you, Michele! Yes, hoping for a quick sale since it is much more versatile now! Have a great weekend! XOXO
Addie says
I like it a lot better. It was a bit too busy for my taste before.
Put ‘er in the shop and let us know what happens!!!! Fingers crossed!!!!
Have a good weekend!!! xx
Christy says
Thank you, Addie! Yes, I can see how it might be hard to match it to existing decor in its previous state. I dropped it off today so fingers crossed lol! Have a wonderful weekend too, my friend! XOXO
Chris T says
Out of all three versions, this is my favorite. Maybe because I love gray and I’ve done similar versions to this on several of my own pieces. White glaze is so versatile. It can be used as a whitewash, to obtain a farmhouse look, a driftwood look over darker colors, used to drybrush, and so much more! I always keep some on hand. I wouldn’t be surprised that now you’ve used glaze, you don’t use it all of the time. It’s so easy and versatile!
Christy says
Thank you, Chris! You are so right…I will probably use it again and again! It really was SO easy! XOXO
Tissy Ramsey says
Christy,

My living room looks like a beach house thanks to you and I live in the middle of Missouri! Just wanted to let you know we all appreciate you!!!
Tissy 😉
Christy says
Oh my goodness, thank you so much, Tissy!! That totally made my day! My sister lives in Wisconsin and she has a total beach house vibe too ha ha! Thank you so much for your very kind words and for following along with me!! XOXO
Jenni says
Looks great! I love the white wash effect! You’ll have to keep us posted on if it sells!
Christy says
Thank you, Jenni! I sure will! XOXO
Ann Williams says
Hi. Thanks so much. This is really pretty. Is the driftwood chalk paint or is it silk? I might try a glaze. I love this. Of course I love all your ideas!!
Christy says
Aww thank you, Ann! This is regular chalk paint. There is a very similar color in the Silk called Baja! XOXO
Cyndi says
I love this little table (but I loved your “before” too)! Once again, great job, Christy! But to the comment that it probably wouldn’t work as a bedside table I would say, I think a pretty box on it would work to hold nail file, small flashlight, lip balm… Everything that’s in my nightstand drawer right now would fit in a small, decorative box. That said, this table would be great in lots of spots around the house!
Christy says
Thank you, Cyndi! Yes, absolutely…a small decorative box would nicely take the place of a drawer. It would also work great in a guest bedroom where you might not need the storage. It is a very versatile little table for sure! XOXO
