I can’t believe it has been a month since I started our kitchen makeover! A lot has happened in these last four weeks, and awesome friends, the end is in sight!!
This is the last project I have to share before the big reveal!! If you are new here, you can see what our kitchen looked like before HERE.
Today is Trash-to-Treasure Tuesday and I’m sharing how I updated our barstools, even though they aren’t exactly what you’d call trash:
These were a Christmas gift from my in-laws a few years ago and were originally from Ballards. Such a generous gift, and I was very grateful for them. They were just beautiful!
Our kitchen got a fresh new paint job since that photo was taken and the tops of these stools were starting to look a little worn, so they were in need of a refresh.
The tops were vinyl and were easy to wipe clean so I decided to stick with vinyl for this update:
The white is so fresh and clean in this bright new space. I decided to swap out the old nailhead trim for chrome nailheads:
They work nicely with the chrome cabinet hardware and new pendant lights:
I purposely took photos that didn’t show the new backsplash. It is all complete and looks so pretty, but I wanted to save it for reveal day!
To recover these stools, I started by removing the old nailhead trim. I decided to keep the old vinyl in tact and just cover over it. It was stapled in place along the entire edge and I wasn’t looking for that much work.
Luckily the look I wanted worked out great since I could reuse the old nailhead holes…
I inserted a new nailhead in every other hole. They are what is holding the new vinyl in place… no staples this time. I measured the new vinyl from edge to edge both ways and used my rotary cutter and straight edge to cut it to fit.
I started by adding a few nailheads to each side to secure it in place…
Then I pulled it as taut as I could in the corners, trimmed the vinyl as straight as possible, and then inserted the nailheads to hold it in place. There is one small fold on each corner that was unavoidable.
Works for me!
And did you notice what else I got done?? I cleaned the tile grout! I shared how I did it without noxious chemicals in my bathroom makeover post HERE.
SO much better! You can see how gross it was before in the photos I took while I was working on the stools above. I bought grout sealer but still need to do that.

Oh my, nicely done Christy! I adore the white vinyl. I admit I would have been concerned the new nail heads wouldn’t stay put in the old holes. Go you! You did it! And your grout looks fabulous as well. You’ve been one busy woman!! I bet you are loving your new kitchen. 🙂

They look so good, I never thought of white vinyl but how modern and practical! I did notice the grout in the photo of you sitting down, I thought well she either cleaned the grout or she’s worrying over nothing. LOL. Looking forward to the reveal. They say kitchens sell houses so your hard work and talent just raised the value of your home, plus you get to live in it and admire it every morning!!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Gina!! Yes the grout was pretty disgusting before. That is one of the things I am the most excited about LOL. And I never even thought about our kitchen raising the value of our home… Excellent point! XOXO

Christy says
Oh ha ha! That’s awesome…they are just perfect! XO
Beth says
Looks great!! I just ruined a couple of barstools (don’t let anyone tell you that you can spray paint vinyl) I’ll do anything to get out of having to recover a piece of furniture. But now, this is my only solution besides throwing them to the curb. Can you please tell me how much fabric or vinyl you used? Would 1 yard cover them both? If I hate recovering furniture, you can only imagine how I feel about cleaning grout! Good job. Looking forward to your reply.
Thanks,
Beth
Christy says
Thank you, Beth, and oh no! I’ve never tried to spray paint vinyl before, but I have used chalk paint on vinyl suitcases before and it did great. You might want to google it and see if that might work for you? One yard should be enough if you decide to recover…there’s three feet in a yard. Good luck! XOXO
