Happy Thursday, fabulous friends! Today I have a quick and easy makeover for y’all!
I picked up this bed tray at the thrift store a few weeks back for $3:
It kind of had a coastal vibe going already, however I’d say the paint job was a little rushed, what do you think?
Ha ha no worries…I gave it a nice neutral redo:
I still had my mix of Annie Sloan’s French Linen (one part) and my DIY mix in Behr’s Bit of Sugar (two parts) out from painting my latest headboard bench that I shared last week. See that HERE if you missed it! I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Anything to save having to wash those brushes lol…just keeping using the same one!
The original white was a perfect base for this color since it looks so pretty coming through underneath…
As I was taking these photos, it occurred to me that I haven’t really shared our master bedroom in the new house. I need to do that!
Are you surprised our bed is still not painted?? The contrast of the warm wood in here balances out my girly bedding and satisfies both my hubby and me.
Here is what the top looked like before…
And here is what it looks like now:
Look familiar? Remember this tray table I redid a few weeks back:
I still had the contact paper I used with the numbers on it that I cut with my Silhouette Cameo for that project…
I decided to use them here for a similar look. First I painted the bottom of the tray white in my Bit of Sugar by Behr DIY chalk paint (recipe HERE):
Then I arranged my numbers in random order:
And painted over them with two coats of the French Linen/Bit of Sugar mix…
When it was barely dry, I pulled all the numbers up with my silhouette tool…
Not too bad! I did have to do a couple of touch ups, and then I sanded across the surface with 220 grit sandpaper to smooth everything out. I sealed with clear matte spray sealer. I was afraid if I used wax, and this tray was used to hold hot food or beverages, that might not be a good combination.
Remember my “fresh cut roses”? Can you believe they are still alive??
Ha ha of course because they’re fakes lol. See how I made this faux arrangement HERE using faux water if you missed it!
Who delivers a tray full of food to an empty perfectly made bed??
We really only serve food in bed to the kiddos if they are sick. We pretty much quarantine them to their rooms so they don’t infect the rest of us. I should have made one of my boys pose sick in bed for these photos. That would have been much more realistic! 🙂
Thank goodness we didn’t have a whole lot of that here this Winter!
I’m glad I saved those numbers…they made for a quick makeover!
If you enjoyed this post, you’ll like this one I updated using numbers too:

How cute is that now!! It looks so much better. I like the number thing on the trays. I actually have two bed trays that I picked up at a thrift store for cheap, time to get to them and re-do them, thanks for the inspiration!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Mary! I thought about putting some sort of uplifting quote on it for when I bring my kids food on it when they’re sick LOL, but this was just way too easy! Have a great weekend! XOXO

Love the bed tray. So sweet. Another great job as usual.

Christy, this tray is adorable I know it won’t last long in your shop. Love the stencil!

Thank you, Christina! Enjoy that warm Florida sunshine this weekend! XOXO

So beautiful!!! I would not have thought to use numbers – but it is amazing. I love it.

How cute! I love the trays. They are so easy to update. You know, I have a little vase like yours and I have some flowers in it, but I didn’t use the kit to make it look like water. I’m going to have to do that. I only have glass pebbles in it and I have to keep repositioning the flowers because they fall out. Can’t wait to see the little hutch, my friend!
Christy says
Thanks, Mary Jean! Yes… Go get you some of that faux water this weekend! XOXO

That food looks delicious! I’m calling you the next time I am sick in bed. 🙂
Christy says
Ha ha that was my lunch! 😀 XOXO
Diane Lazar says
I already thought you painted your bedroom furniture
Wasn’t it a cherry wood sleigh bed
Christy says
I’m not exactly sure what kind of wood it is, but it is a sleigh bed. And nope, haven’t tackled this beast yet! XO
Marcie Lovett says
You are so funny! The tray looks adorable, and getting to use the leftover numbers is a win.
Christy says
Thanks, Marcie! Yes saving these numbers made for a super quick project, and you know I love that! XOXO

What a lovely makeover, as usual. I still love the look of wood, but you are making me think about using paint on some things, even though my daughter will give me a talking to since she doesn’t like things painted. Sigh. Thanks for the inspiration.
Christy says
Thank you, Ginny! Wood is beautiful, but there’s no reason why you can’t blend in a few painted accents, right? Just have fun with it! XO
Marie says
It started with the kids’ rocking chair, then the little wooden cabinet, then this bed tray (just finished mine a few hours ago) and now your next cabinet project which I just put the first coat of paint on mine (please say yours isn’t red)? What the heck? Clearly, we’re both on the same wavelength these days. Thank goodness I didn’t put numbers on my tray too! Love yours and pinned 🙂
Christy says
Oh my lol! No, mine will not be red, I promise! That is too funny!! XOXO

Quick redo, gotta love em! Numbers look great on this piece also. I think I am finally gonna take the leap and get a booth at my favorite antique store. Putting together things and worrying if I set up the right stuff. Your smalls post a while back helped with smaller stuff and of course all your projects are a true inspiration. Sunny sky’s here in Washington, been out fighting with the weeds (shhhhh, don’t tell anyone but they are winning)! Hugs, Bonnie
Christy says
Thanks, Bonnie! Oh yay…love that you are taking the plunge and going for it with a booth! Fun!! I spent the day staining our deck…not the most fun way to spend a Saturday, but it is looking so much better! xoxo
Becky says
Awww, so cute! Haha, I love how you poke fun at the whole perfectly-made-bed-with-nobody-in-it thing! THAT’S what’s wrong with my house- people live in it!, haha!! Oh well, very pretty staging again!
Christy says
Don’t worry my bed does not get made like that every day…trust me ha ha! Thanks, Becky! Hope you are enjoying your weekend! 😀
Julie Briones says
Beautiful tray, Christy! I’m getting ready to use a Cricut (not mine, a friend’s) to create a stencil for something. I searched your site for contact paper stencil. 🙂 Do you have a tutorial where you explain how you use contact paper with your Silhouette?
Christy says
Hey Julie! Thanks! I just cut my contact paper to fit the mat and feed it into the machine. I use the same settings as I would for regular vinyl. After it is cut, I peel and adhere it to my surface. The negative parts are usually stuck to the backing and I just transfer over any small pieces like the insides of certain letters that get left behind. As for using your own uploaded images with the Silhouette, I do have a tutorial for that here: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/tray-repurposed-how-to-cut-your-own-designs-with-your-silhouette-cameo/ I hope I answered your questions, but feel free to message me if not! 🙂 XO
Julie Briones says
That’s super helpful! Thank you! Have a great weekend!
Christy says
Sure! You too! 🙂

Hi,
I love the trays with the numbers on it–where would I get a stencil or sheet with the numbers as shown? I would love to copy them for a tray I have. Thanks, Monica
Christy says
Thanks, Monica! I did include a printable PDF of the numbers I used for a similar square tray in this post: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/numbered-tray/. You can probably cut it to modify it for a rectangular tray if need be.
