Hello beautiful friends and welcome to Trash-to-Treasure Tuesday!! I share these kinds of makeovers weekly, but once a month I get to do it with my blogging besties, so be sure to look for their trashy makeovers at the bottom!
I didn’t really have anything in my current haul (only FOUR pieces left woohoo!!) that would be a great trashy makeover, but I just recently picked up this CD holder at the thrift store:
The first time I spied it, it was $5.75. I don’t know anyone who is willing to pay that for a CD holder these days, so I passed on it. However, when I spied it a second time, it was half off, so I went ahead and got it!
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Deja Vu
I kind of cheated here a little bit, because I have made over this exact style of CD holder once before back in 2016. See that version HERE.
It turned out really cute, so I decided to create a similar version of the first makeover!
Remove the innards
The first order of business was to remove the velvet covered plastic from the insides…
On the first makeover I did, they pulled right out, glue and all, but here I had to go back and remove the glue. I was able to do that with a razor blade.
Turn it into a storage tote
Then I dug around the garage a bit and found two of these pretty wood pieces that were originally drawer separators that came out of one of the drawers of this hutch.
Of course I save everything! I decided this would become a storage tote and every tote needs a handle, right?
These would become the new supports for the handle. I used a ruler and pencil to draw out the shape of the side supports…
Then I used my sliding miter saw to cut them:
Always use caution when using power tools and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
I sanded the edges smooth and then drilled a hole for my new handle, which I believe was once a chair spindle.
Once I had the handle through the holes on both side pieces, I attached them to the sides with wood glue:
Securing them in place with my clamps allowed me to follow up with my nail gun without it shifting on me…
And voila! Le tote! Luckily, the handle was the perfect length as is!
Paint
Now that the build was done, it was time for paint.
I started with Silk Oyster for the insides and painted the outside with one of my favorite summer shades, Farmhouse Green:
I absolutely love Oyster, but decided that I wanted a brighter white for the insides and followed it up with Salt Water.
I did sand a tiny bit here and there, but then I decided to soften the color just a bit with the Whitewash glaze.
I brushed it on with a chip brush and wiped it back with a clean, soft cloth:
The glaze acts as a sealer as well, so there was no need to seal after.
All that was left to do was add a little embellishment to the front. I did that with a Redesign with Prima Decor Mould and Amazing Casting Resin. (One box will do many pieces.)
I painted it in the same Farmhouse Green…
I followed that up with the whitewash glaze also.
The After
Who would ever guess that it started as a CD holder??
As you can see, I drilled a hole in the resin piece and added a sweet glass knob…
And of course, I’m taking advantage of my hydrangeas while I can, but this could be used for so many things!
It still has two compartments:
I hope you enjoyed this fun Trash-to-Treasure project today!
Don’t forget, there are four more trashy makeovers for you to visit!
Here is the the first one I redid back in 2016:
You can see how that one turned out HERE! 🙂
I’ll be back on Thursday with a reshare of this pretty piece:
Have a fabulous weekend, dear friends!

I just had to reach out to you to share how much I admire your transformations of boring brown furniture to amazing pieces of art! I am an Auction Manager from New York. We specialize in entire estates via the online auction format. As we all know, the interest in brown furniture has dwindled dramatically. When I am auctioning a piece of brown furniture that I know nobody will be interested in, I include a link to one of your masterpiece creations to give the bidders an idea of what could be…. If I didn’t live in an apartment, I would be so on board with trying to repurpose some of these items myself, as I have always had that creative bug inside me and you make it look SO EASY! If only you lived in the NY area, you can’t imagine how many pieces of brown furniture that sell for only $1. You sincerely are my idol!!
Christy says
Aww thank you SO much, Lisa!! I truly appreciate that! Wow if I lived there, I’d have to rent a warehouse to store all the fabulous deals! I wouldn’t be able to pass any of them up! And what a great idea to link to what some of the items could be! XOXO

Marietta says
Why are you alwasy stealing my thunder? LOL
I just brought my green up to do some repurposing this weeked. I acutally think the green of spring is tugging at our creative juices. I have seen a lot of green lately.
Your idea to turn this silly CD box into a carry-all is absolutly brilliant and I hope to steal this idea from you sometime in the not so distant future. I have a little shop about five minutes from my house and they have embraced Shabby Chic. She heard about my pieces and pictures of pieces and she wants me to bring some in. She said if they are that good, she might just take some of them and sell them as artist peices. Uh, Yes Please!
So it is going to be crazy-ville around here this weekend. I love it. So keep the inspiration my dear. You are my sunshine.
Christy says
Ha ha! Sorry! I think you’re right…I see beautiful greens popping up a lot this spring! And thank you so much…copy away! Congratulations on the invite to share your treasures…lots of good creative vibes coming your way as you prepare for that! Creating is so good for the soul..enjoy every moment!! Mwah! XOXO
