Happy Tuesday, amazing friends! Can you even believe it’s October already?? I’m continuing to work through my Fall haul and today this drop leaf side table is getting a cottage-inspired makeover:
I found this table for $25 at the thrift store a couple of months ago. I thought this cutie pie was well worth that and scooped it right up. The top, however, had quite a few dings and knicks, so I went a little more distressed on this one to make that work. I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
I started by giving it two coats of BOSS in white since it was potentially a bleeder with that dark red stain, and also because I wanted a white base for the paint color I chose. (BOSS also comes in clear if you don’t want white to show through when you distress your peice.)
I started on the underside first. This is after one coat:
This made for a great base for this gorgeous color:
Surprise!! A new color for me! Isn’t so fun??
This is Dixie Belle’s Mint Julep. It was one of the first colors I chose when I first became a Dixie Belle retailer and I am so excited I finally found a piece to try it on!
I only gave this table ONE coat of the Mint Julep, then sanded liberally all over with 220 grit sandpaper. I wanted the white to show through…
Here you can see I was a bit heavier-handed with the sandpaper than I usually am:
I sealed with Dixie Belle’s Clear Coat in Satin using their blue sponge.
See how I apply it in this video demo:
If you have trouble viewing, find it on YouTube HERE.
You can see that the satin is not super shiny, but leaves more of a subtle sheen…
For the drawer, I needed to fill the original holes. I used Dixie Belle Mud in brown for that:
After I cleared one side of my work table off to take this photo, I decided I needed to just clean the whole surface already.
I think I shamed myself into finally clearing it when I posted what a hot mess it had become in Thursday’s post! Now it’s all nice and clean!
It really is easier to be productive with a nice clean workspace!
Anyway…back to the mud…this only required one application and light sanding with 220 grit sandpaper:
I replaced the original pull with this one from Hobby Lobby:
All their knobs and pulls are 50% off this week!
I found a pretty piece of this scrapbook paper in my stash to line the inside of the drawer…
I attached it with double-sided tape. I usually use fabric, but this worked well for this small drawer.
I painted right over all of the hardware including the hinges and the pieces that support the drop downs on either side:
I love the curvy lines of the top!
This would fit in perfectly in a seaside cottage next to a white slipcovered sofa don’t you think? Or how about next to the bed in a breezy white guest bedroom? Maybe with a colorful vintage quilt on the bed?
A girl can dream.
I love this fun pop of color for a nice change!
I hope you enjoyed it too!
Another project complete! Woohoo!

I’ll be back on Thursday sharing what I did with this $10 thrift store cabinet:
Hope to see you then!

WOWZA!! I love it, and I was so surprised! I love that color as well, I am like you and LOVE white, but how fun a color is that mint julip! What a beautiful table now. I love cottage style almost as much as farmhouse. What a beautiful job you did with the table! Looking forward to seeing what you do with the cabinet on Thursday as I have one very similar to redo and have been waiting for inspiration, which I always get here!!
Christy says
Yay! I’m so glad you like it, Mary, thank you! Yes, I too adore all things white, but I love a pop of color sometimes! See you Thursday! XOXO
Petra says
I am totally in love with this piece 🙂 Not only do I love drop leaf tables but I’ve been seeing this colour around a bit lately (in cafes actually) and it’s my new favourite colour!!! And I love the white showing through after sanding. Well done, and I’m looking forward to seeing you use this colour again. Just wish I could buy your paint!
Christy says
Thank you, Petra! I have been waiting for the perfect piece to try this fun color on. It is so refreshing! I too am looking forward to using it again! I wish you could but my paint too, my friend! XOXO
Jody says
Such a sweet little table. I would covet it and put it in my bedroom. I could have a bit of breakfast and and look at my emails.
Christy says
Thanks, Jody! This would be perfect as a little work table for a bedroom! XOXO
Janice Holt says
I love the beautiful color but have to admit I was surprised. It is a sweet table.
Christy says
Thank you, Janice! This is pretty colorful for me ha ha! XOXO
Christina in SW FL says
Christy, a spontaneous “WOW!” came out of my mouth when I saw the Mint Julep color! So cheerful and peaceful. Love this and the knob is perfect. Way to go as always!! 🙂
Christy says
Aww yay! I love that, Christina! Thank you!! XOXO
Cheryl Atkinson says
Hi Christy! I love Mint Julep. I used it on the top of a night stand i painted (and has not sold). I am not repainting it though. Someone will love it. Now i’m going to paint a table the same color because yours looks so cute!!! Thank you for the inspiration!
Cheryl
Christy says
Yes, someone will love your table! That is a risk you take when using color though…those pieces need the right person to come along, hence the reason I paint so many things white lol or more neutral lol. I don’t care though…this is such a fun color and I just love it! I think I will be using this one again soon too! XOXO
Melissa says
Another inspiring piece! Can’t wait to see what you do with those chairs – I have the same pair in my stash.
Christy says
Thanks, Melissa! I have a table in my booth that hasn’t sold so I think I’m going to bring it home and give it redo to go with the chairs! XOXO
Tammy Ganci says
Hi, love the table and I love the color. I am so happy that it isn’t grey or white or stripes!!!! It is nice to see something other then.
Tammy
Christy says
Thank you, Tammy! I do love to use these fun colors…unfortunately they don’t usually sell too well for me, hence the reason I stick with a more neutral palette. Believe it or not, white is by far the hardest color to paint something, so this was such a nice treat for me too! XOXO
Megan Harpring says
All of your furniture projects are great but my favorite project…. is the garden at your last house!!! Guuuurrrrlll!!!! BEAUTIFUL!! I have been following you for a bit now but somehow stumbled across those old posts. And about died! Lol how’d you get all that know how in plants and landscaping??! And Why’d you move?!!!!! Lol Haha I’ll stop. Anyway it was Beautiful and let’s just say I was more than impressed lol
Christy says
Thank you, Megan! I miss my garden so much!! Our old home backed right up against a 55mph road, unfortunately, so we were really anxious to get away from that. We have plans for our new back yard though so hopefully we can implement them in the coming year! XOXO
Carole says
I am not a green person so I really can’t comment on this one. It is definitely a very cute piece and I can tell you did another wonderful job bringing it back to life.
Christy says
Thank you, Carole! XOXO
Jackie C says
I’m more of a neutral color gal, this is a little out of my comfort zone 😊 but it reminds me of a table my grandma had. I do love it and I especially like the white and wood showing with the distressing. The color wouldn’t go in my house, but it looks fantastic.
Christy says
Thank you, Jackie! It does have a bit of a vintage feel. This would only work for me if it were the only color in a white room ha ha! XOXO
Micki Prchlik says
I was wondering if you can remove the cloth lining that you put in drawers if you change your mind about the pattern, etc. down the road?
Christy says
Hi Micki! Yes, you sure can as long as it is fabric. Paper is much harder to remove. XO
Carolyn Lawrence says
Love this! Your work and ideas always inspire me!!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Carolyn! XOXO
Debbie in TX says
That new color woke me right up! What a handy little table this is, and you can’t even tell where the old holes for the drawer knobs were. Super job! And a gold star to you for cleaning your work area as well! It’s nice that you have that window close by for lots of natural light while working. Have a nice day!!!!
Christy says
Thanks so much, Debbie! I think I shamed myself into cleaning my workspace ha ha! It really is so nice to work on a clean surface, and I love having the window! Enjoy the rest of your day too! XOXO
Kathy says
The table is a lovely style. But good heavens – does EVERYTHING have to be made over with distressed painting? Please, can’t you show us something different for a change? Your skills are terrific, and I KNOW you’re up to it!!!
Christy says
Wow, I thought using a bold color that I’ve never used before was doing something different for a change. I LOVE a distressed look and I will continue to distress my pieces until I no longer enjoy that style. The day I start doing makeovers to make others happy is the day I stop loving what I do! Sorry, not sorry! XO
sharon austin says
Very cute! I love anything mint, turquoise or similar. I would totally use that at my cabin for a bedside stand.
Christy says
Thank you, Sharon! Oh yes this would be perfect in your cabin beside the bed! XOXO
Kalli says
I love this make over- as always!! I have a question- can you use a regular sponge to apply the clear coat? I cannot find that little round sponge around here. Thanks so much!!
Christy says
Thank you, Kalli!! I haven’t tried using a regular sponge so I can’t answer that, but if you try it, I’d love to know how it goes! XOXO
Mary Loveland says
Cute update! You practically always use items from Hobby Lobby and I finally went to ours and they don’t carry any knobs!?? I got on their website and searched for knobs and they hardly had anything, mostly cartoon knobs?? sheesh!
Christy says
Thanks, Mary! I can’t believe your Hobby Lobby didn’t have any knobs. That’s something they’re known for…strange! If you look on their site, don’t just search “knobs”. Be a bit more detailed like, “glass knobs” or “white knobs”. They have over 500 results, so that will narrow it way down and show you exactly what you want to see. Hope that helps! They are all half off this week! XOXO
Sue Mellette says
What a fun color! I don’t think I would have chosen that, but you worked your magic and the table is stunning. It is so fresh and appealing. Wish I had a beach house!! Thanks again for sharing. I just love what you do and how you share little tid bits about you and your life!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Sue! I’m so glad you like it! You are so sweet! I’m looking around here to see where I can add a pop of this pretty green! XOXO
Marie says
Such a pretty color, Christy! The size of this little table is so versatile. Love the way you styled it too.
Christy says
Thank you, my beautiful friend! This really is so versatile! I’d love to find a spot for it in our bedroom! XOXO
Rose Lefebvre says
I have never seen a small table like this with drop sides! I like it! The new knob is so much better!
Christy says
Isn’t it cute? This is the first I’ve seen like it. Thank you, Rose! XOXO
Stephanie Sheridan says
I have to say this table is awesome. Would love it next to my bed. Love the colors.
Christy says
Thank you, Stephanie! I can’t wait to use this fun color again! XOXO
Melody Boyer says
So cute! I love all of your projects, you totally inspire me! I have a question about the Dixie Belle Clear Coat, would that be a good option for kitchen cabinets? How does it wear? Thanks so much!
Christy says
Thank you, Melody! Are your cabinets chalk painted? My first preference for kitchen cabinets is the old school: clean, sand, prime, paint with a latex enamel in a satin finish. You can see our kitchen I redid this way here: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/kitchen-makeover-reveal/ In this case, there is no need for a topcoat. They are super easy to clean and have held up so well. If you wanted a sealer for the kitchen, I would recommend the Gator Hide because it is water proof. It has a bit more sheen, but it is the most durable topcoat Dixie Belle makes. Hope this helps!
Sandra D' Camp. says
OMGosh, I love, love, love the green, it looks so fresh! And I have the table with two chairs as well. It’s a little wider than yours but it has the same lines. My next project, oh Joy!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Sandra! Have fun with yours! XOXO
Elizabeth Marchak says
Nicely done. The table has nice lines and your creativity makes it pop. Your lined drawer may work perfectly, but I have found that when using two-sided tape, a gentle pass with a hot iron really cements things in place. Also, it is interesting to hear what colors sell and which do not.
Christy says
Thank you, Elizabeth and thanks for that tip! I do expect this table to sit a while in my booth as this is a bit of a risky color, but it will look cute in the booth anyway! XOXO
Susan Smith says
Hi Christy! I am new to your site and I love it! I went today and bought Dixie Belle paint and supplies. I bought the Mint Julep green because that table is so sweet! I have a couple projects and I’m going to use that green somewhere.
Christy says
Hi Susan! Thank you! Isn’t that green so fun?? I hope you love Dixie Belle products as much as I do! Have fun with your projects! XOXO
