Hello amazing friends!! I’ve pulled another oldie out of the archives for today’s Posts of Christmas Past makeover! This one is from 2016.
There are few things I love more than turning something old and forgotten into a brand new treasure.
Today, I’m sharing how I created brand new Christmas Decor out of this old light fixture:
This was an outdoor light fixture that I spied at the Habitat Restore. Every once in a while I get really lucky in there. (HERE’s a great Habitat Restore treasure from way back.)
It was originally 24.99, but marked down to $14.99, and it was an additional 40% off, so it came in at around $9.
I thought that if I could figure out how to remove the lighting components inside that it would make an awesome cloche for the Holidays.
I was able to remove the insides and rework the handle and was left with this:
I needed a base for it, so I cut one from a scrap piece of wood:
Then I gave them both a new paint job…
It was still missing something, so I decided to add some height with an old wooden candlestick I found in my stash. After painting it, I attached it with a screw down through the middle. Then I added glitter by spraying with a matte clear sealer first, then adding the glitter:
I wanted a glitter that would look white rather than iridescent, and I found this one that was perfect at Hobby Lobby.
And here is how I turned an old outdoor light Fixture into brand new Christmas decor!
It’s been more difficult than ever to find unique Christmas decor this year with all that has been going on, but upcycling is a great way to create something that nobody else has!
I borrowed a few pieces from my Christmas Village to put inside…
The Santa building a snowman came from Walmart, and the sleds and tree came from Lemax several years ago.
I tried a few different displays in here and it was fun seeing the scenes come to life under the glass. I liked the reds and settled on this combination, but you could easily change it out from year to year or even holiday to holiday!
The garland inside came as a pack of straight pieces.
I found those and the bows at Hobby Lobby.
This light fixture turned cloche worked great as the star of this Christmas vignette!
I hope you enjoyed this thrifty Christmas decor project today!

I remember this one also! It was so cute and I don’t know very many people who could vision something this cute to do with a outdoor light fixture. This is what makes you the QUEEN of DIY!!! I am enjoying this week very much! Here’s to sipping my coffee and enjoying every day this week with you!
Christy says
Aww you are the best cheerleader, Mary! Thank you so much!! I am truly enjoying this week also…if only I could post every day lol. Have a great day! XOXO
Maryellen Webber says
Oh Christy, this cloche is absolutely beautiful! I love the scene you created! I bought a cloche on clearance a few years ago and it needs height also. I may use a simple white plate and a candle stick since I am not handy with power tools. Thanks for the inspiration! 😊
Christy says
Thank you so much, Maryellen! Yes…that is a great idea! E600 glue works marvelously on glass! XOXO
Christina says
Wow, this is super cute Christy! Great job finding all the proportionally correct items. I think this is so adorable!!
Christy says
Thank you so much, my friend! XOXO

Now this is just as cute as can be and so were the stockings yesterday. I had my 2 granddaughters spend the night and they were here most of the day so I didn’t get a chance to comment yesterday. Enjoying all of these this week and love seeing them every day.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Janice! How lovely that you got to have your granddaughters over for a sleepover! I sure hope I get a granddaughter or two some day! XOXO

What a great find. I love the base you added and elevating it adds so much. So cute. I’m going to check out some of your past posts. Isn’t decorating so much fun? Especially when you make something beautiful out of great thrifty finds.
Christy says
Thank you, Kathy! Yes it sure is, especially when you can do it on the cheap lol! XOXO
Susan says
Oh my gosh that is fabulous! I love that you made an octagonal pedestal for it Christy 🙂
Christy says
Thanks so much, my friend! XOXO

Oh, man!!! I dumped some broken coach fixtures sometime back! This is SO creative! I will be scouting the thrift stores and garage sales this summer for more to make this!!!
Christy says
Oh no! They would have been perfect!! Good luck in your search…the Habitat Restore had several to choose from if you have one in your area! XOXO
Carolyn says
So cute–almost looks like a victorian style garden gazebo. Lovely as always!
Christy says
Thanks so much, Carolyn! XOXO
Phyllis says
This is just the cutest Christmas scene ever. I would never have thought of the greenery and bows. You can always find a way to take things to the next level. Wonderful! I love Christmas!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Phyllis! This was a fun one to work on…almost like decorating a dollhouse room! XOXO

Thanks for your inspiration and motivation! I have a table top lantern out in my garage. It is one from a friend’s daughter’s wedding decor…two children ago! It’s been sitting out there awhile! I also have a chicken wire cloche (purchased!) to decorate. I’ve been collecting little items, here and there, that have appealed to me and just adding them to a bag. Today’s the day to look at them altogether and see what comes together! Also have my stash of past Christmas crafting materials, too, in keeping with your theme “Posts of Christmas Past!” P.S. I made 6 sweater pumpkins! Got two friends making them, too, on a “Craft Night!”
Christy says
You are so welcome, Karen! I have no doubt you will create something beautiful today! And I love that you and your friends made the pumpkins!! XOXO
Sue H Mellette says
Love this makeover, but then I always love your makeovers!!! The light fixture turned out so cute as a cloche. It is the perfect size for your miniature Christmas pieces! Adding the candlestick to the bottom does finish it off nicely! Can’t wait to see what you do with those houses tomorrow!!
Christy says
Aww thank you, Sue! I’m so glad it worked out…it was just the right size! See ya tomorrow! XOXO

Clever endeavor!!!! I LOVE this!!!! Okay….here is the sad part…..
Just this past summer I replaced my old ugly lanterns that didn’t work….
Yep, you guessed it…..I threw them out!!!!! I am now so sorry I did!!!!!
I LOVE these/this idea!!!! You would think I would know better after reading you for all these years!!! ;( I am crying!!!!!!! My new mantra will be…..
WWCD…..”what would Christy do”…before I throw out anything!!!
Addie xoxo
Christy says
Thank you, Addie, and OOOOHHHH NOOOOOO! Isn’t that always the way? Maybe you’ll come across some for super cheap!! XOXO

Golly you are clever.
I have 4 of those lighting fixtures in the hoardsville basement we have.
I would never in a zillion years thought of this.
Well done, yet again, Christy!!!
Christy says
Aww thank you, Michele!! Hoardsville lol, I love it ha ha! XOXO

Wow, this is just adorable! Hats off to you! Reading through your blog, it’s clear you are incredibly talented and have no fear of a power tool!
Christy says
Thank you, Jeannie!! There was a time when I would patiently wait for my husband to cut things out for me, but one day I just got tired of waiting for him ha ha! XOXO
Cindy Lee says
So glad to see you revisit your “oldies but goodies”! My older kids think I’m crazy sometimes when I say “don’t throw that away” or “this thing will make a great ____”! 😂😂Then I search your site and show them a photo of things past! Ta Da! I just scored 2 shadow box clocks last week from SA. Yours from 2015 with the 2nd grade ornament popped in my head😁😁You know…What Would Christy Do?…..WWCD? Love what you do and share with us all. Happy Holidays!!
Christy says
Oh yay!! I love that so much, Cindy ha ha! Thank you! Yes…you just never know what something can become, right? Have fun with your clocks! They make excellent mini shadow boxes! XOXO
Cheryl Atkinson says
Hi Christy! I dont remember this one. How. Ute this is. I’m going to start sending you pictures of my finds and asking you for ideas. I am not half as creative as you. You mind blows me away sometimes. I love your Christmas. Village. Are you getting it out this year? Thank you for another adorable makeover.
Christy says
Thank you, Cheryl! I have everything up except for my village. I’m waiting for Jack to finish his exams and then we’ll do it together! XOXO
Susan says
Wonderful ideas! I admire your creativity! What did you use to fasten the greenery and bows? E6000 or what?
Christy says
Thank you, Susan! I used just a dab of hot glue to secure the garland and bows. XOXO
Kathy M says
Christy,
I think I might say this just about every time, but I mean it every time. You blow my mind! You take things that I would see no hope for and do the most amazing things with them. Every week, I’m ready to be underwhelmed with the picture that comes up in the email (well, that didn’t sound quite right, but hopefully you know what I mean), and then every single time, I’m just blown away with what you have come up with. You are so creative and imaginative, and I love how you share every step so that those of us without your talents can give the project a try. Love seeing what you do and being inspired. Thank you!!
Christy says
Aww I appreciate that so much Kathy! Thank you! I’m glad I can surprise you ha ha! XOXO
ColleenB.~Tx. says
That is so COOL! Such creativity. I like all the little details in making it so special. The vignette would be lovely in center of dining room table or even on an entry table for all to see as they come in.
I have so many lanterns stored, away that I just haven’t the time to do anything with them as yet. I did manage to get my Cross-mas tree & decorations up the other day.
Your village houses; I picture them heading for a snow blizzard. :}
Take care, stay safe and stay healthy.
Enjoy your day.
Christy says
Thanks so much, Colleen! This certainly would make an excellent centerpiece for the table! As for the village houses, you weren’t too far off lol! XOXO
Karen Thompson says
ADORABLE! You are so creative! Love love love this one
Christy says
Thank you, Karen! XOXO

Thank you, Megan! XOXO

Ditto to everything said above. I loved seeing all your projects this week. Some I remembered and enjoyed seeing again and others were new to me. I wish I had your vision. For the time being I will just use your vision for ideas. Happy holidays!
Christy says
Aww thanks, my friend! I’m glad there were some you hadn’t seen before! Happy holidays to you too!! XOXO
