Sweet friends, can you believe it’s December?? If you’re just tuning in this week, I’m sharing the Posts of Christmas Past all this week!
Today, I’m back with a more recent holiday makeover I did just last year by turning a $7 thrift store mirror into a fun Christmas mirror!
It was actually on clearance at the thrift store for $6.98. I rarely pass up a good deal on a mirror, especially one on clearance at the thrift store! When I found this one, I figured at the very least I could turn it into a chalkboard for my booth, but for this project, I decided to keep it as a mirror.
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
I love pops of red for my own Christmas decor, so I started by painting the frame of this mirror in Honky Tonk red by Dixie Belle:
It is a true red. If you like a bit more black in your red, Barn Red is a great option.
As you can see, I removed the mirror first. That way I could paint the backside as well so the mirror would reflect the red instead of the original wood finish.
I decided to tone down the red just a bit by mixing some clear wax with black gilding wax to get a black wax since I didn’t have any black wax on hand at the time:
I applied it with a clean soft cloth to seal my paint finish.
How to Faux Etch a Mirror
I wanted to create a faux etched look with this mirror and to do that, I found this pretty Christmas design in the Silhouette Store HERE. If you own a Silhouette Machine, you can access their online store that has endless designs that you can purchase and download. This one cost me 50¢.
I used a 12″ X 24″ cutting mat and printed out the design in two pieces since it was so large. I used contact paper since I’m cheap. Transfer paper makes this an easier project as well, but I was out.
Once I had my design where I wanted it and made sure the rest of my mirror was covered, I sprayed over the design with Rustoleum Frosted Glass Spray:
I applied two light coats, allowing the first one to dry before applying the second. Then I removed the contact paper immediately.
(If you don’t own a silhouette, a stencil will work as well. Spray Loctite Spray Adhesive to the back of the stencil to hold it firmly in place.)
I added the mirror back to the frame and that was it!
From clearance thrift store mirror to brand new Christmas decor!
If you ever tire of the design, you can probably remove the faux etching with a razor blade.
I decided to keep this one for myself!
Are you decorated for the holidays yet??
I’m still decorating, but it has been nice taking my time, so I can enjoy the process!
If you missed the first two Christmas projects of this week’s series, you can see them HERE and HERE!
I hope you continue to follow along all this coming week. Tomorrow, I’ll be back sharing what I did with these sweaters:
See ya then!
UPDATE: These sweaters are sweaters no more! See what they became HERE!
XOXO,
Don’t Miss a Thing!

I only wish you had a video of the process.
Enjoy your week. Stay safe, & stay healthy.

Thank you, Colleen! The hardest part was lining up the vinyl/contact paper. The rest was as easy as spray painting over! Enjoy the rest of your week also! XOXO

Since I’m new to the blog, I love seeing the posts from the past. This is beautiful. Glad to hear you kept it for yourself. The stencil is beautiful. I’ll check in tomorrow and keep decorating. Don t forget to give us a peak like you did at Halloween. I didn’t get to post on the jar lids. Those would make cute gift package tie ons. And the chair. Just make another one for yourself. Happy December and decorating to you.

I’m glad you are enjoying this look back since these are new to you! This was a fun project and I’m glad I get to keep it too! The mason jar lids would make fantastic tie-ons…great idea! XOXO

This is absolutely gorgeous! I have to ask though, did you by chance forget to remove your stencil from the center of the A and the swirl of the M? I see it there in your cut stencil, but the finished photos show it filled in. I know I’ve done this exact same thing in the past and thought I would ask. Thank you for sharing all your beautiful makes!
Christy says
Thanks, Amanda! And yes I did lol! XOXO

Tori says
This turned out beautifully! I was just at our local GW and darn it they had nothin! Bummer! I have a small notebook that I keep in my purse with ideas for projects, cause let’s face it…if you’re a crafter- you have a million ideas swirling around in your head and sometimes we forget WHY we needed to find a wooden bowl or a small fishbowl, and was it five 5×7 frames and three 8×10’s? Or vice/versa???? Yeah..you know what I mean. Anyway, this goes in the notebook for sure!
Also, yes! The etching will scrape off. I used it for privacy in a bathroom window. And I don’t recommend it for that unless you plan on scraping and RE-spraying every so often as high humidity seems to make it crackle and flake. Just my two cents😁
Christy says
Thank you, Tori! Keeping a list with you is a great idea! And thank you for confirming that this spray will scrape off…I thought it might. Good to know how using it for privacy works too…thank you! XOXO
Sharon L Austin says
Not sure how I missed this post but that turned out super cute. I’ve noticed before in your posts that the Silhouette store seems to offer some pretty cool stuff and seems to be a lot cheaper than the cricut store. I may have to switch machines! LOL
Christy says
Thank you, Sharon! They really do have a lot of designs to choose from! XOXO
