Halloween already?? I know, right? How on earth did October get here so quickly? Dear friends, I am just going to embrace it because as many of you know, I absolutely LOVE Halloween!
Today I have a fun and pretty darn easy Halloween project to share, and so do some of my friends as part of the Seasonal Simplicity Fall Series hosted by my sweet friend, Krista from The Happy Housie. Be sure to check out their projects at the bottom!
My project all started with this:
This is the backing that came off of the very heavy mirror that I turned into this chalkboard for our kitchen last October:
I loved the shape of it so I hung onto it, and after I had finished decorating our outdoor space for Halloween, this gave me one more idea.
I decided to turn it into a lighted sign to welcome our trick-or-treaters!
I made it so last-minute that I never got a chance to share the how-to last year.
Now y’all know this is not all that will be going on our porch this year, but it was fun to start bringing things out of the attic…
And all aglow at night:
I told y’all it was fun, right?
And SO easy! Here’s how…
I started by using a ruler to help me write what I wanted my sign to say:
As you can see it took a couple of tries to get it right.
Then I drilled holes about every inch. Be sure your drill bit is the same size as the lights you are using.
When I was done, I sanded the holes smooth…
Next I spray painted the sign black:
Then I just plugged the lights into the holes from the back to make my new sign come to life.
And that’s it!
Pretty fun, right?
We haven’t pulled all of our Halloween treasures out yet; we are waiting until next weekend, but here’s a peek at this same spot last year:
Spooky! See the rest of our outdoor display from last year HERE.
And here is where we used our trick-or-treat sign last year:
We set up a tent at the entrance to our walkway on Halloween night. Not a bad addition to our display considering it cost me nothing out of pocket. I had all the supplies and even used orange lights that I already had. I did have to replace the first set that spelled out “Trick” this year, but that was a quick fix.
Don’t forget I have some talented friends sharing simple Halloween projects today as well!

Hi Christy, I look forward to every post, and am amazed at how you completely transform items that I would overlook! My question is-what is the advantage of using chalk paint over latex? I have used chalk paint on many pieces, but over time the finish starts looking pretty worn(wax over paint). Do you have guidelines on one paint over the other? Thank you.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Penny! I prefer chalk paint for pieces that I want to have a distressed look, since it distresses so nicely, and I choose latex enamel when I want a clean look. You can buff out any scratches etc in the wax finish with regular pledge furniture polish. I tried a new brush-on sealer from Dixie Belle in my last makeover that I am hopeful might hold up better to heavy use. Time will tell. Hope this helps!! XOXO

Love the sign with the cool orange glow. You could use this idea and make something similar for the Christmas holidays even.
Your Halloween decorations are my absolute favorite. I wish I lived nearby so I could come see it in person. I know you guys will have a yard that knocks everyone “dead” this year!!!!
