Hello beautiful friends!! It is my favorite day of the month: Trash-to-Treasure Tuesday!! I know I share a ton of those around here, but when I get to do it with four of my favorite treasure-maker friends, it is even better!
You might have seen this dresser that I recently picked up at the thrift store, on my Facebook page :
Okay so I know it’s not exactly trash, but it had been sitting there long enough to get marked down twice so nobody was fighting anyone for it. It was originally $150, marked down to $99, then to $75.
I saw it and stood there for about 10 minutes just staring at it. I hadn’t intended to add anything else to my office, but I knew I could use the storage, and it was just perfect for that. I also had a $5 coupon, so it was a great deal at $70.
Unfortunately it ended up being too wide to fit in the back of my jeep, so I had to borrow the hubby’s truck to get it home. (That makes it hard to try to hide it from him in the garage…oh baby that has been there for forever!)
I knew I had to get it out of there quickly since it was a space hog, so despite waking up to blizzard conditions on Thursday, I got started right away.
I just finished her up yesterday:
Does it look familiar? I modeled it after one of my all time favorite dressers since I loved it so much. See that HERE!
And y’all know I can’t resist stripes!
They are such an easy way to add a little something to a piece of furniture. I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I use.
At first I was thinking this would be great with card catalog pulls, but I just don’t think I’m a card catalog kinda girl. I wanted functional but pretty, and I think that is exactly what I got.
To paint this piece, I used Behr’s Bit of Sugar made into DIY Chalk Paint. (Find recipe with video on how to mix it HERE.)
Painting followed by a little sanding always highlights those pretty details…
See my complete tutorial for chalk painting furniture HERE.
I painted the stripes in a mix of one part Annie Sloan’s French Linen and two parts Ultra Pure White.
FrogTape (found HERE) helps get those clean crisp lines:
I painted two coats and then immediately removed the tape after the second coat. See the inspiration piece HERE to see how I measure out the stripes.
I decided to fill in the holes in the top two drawers to break it up a bit. I used Elmer’s White Wood Filler to fill those in. (It almost always takes a second layer to get those holes super smooth.)
I replaced the original pulls in those top two drawers with these pretty glass knobs:
This pretty piece was sealed with Annie Sloan’s clear soft wax.
I loved the original hardware that came with this dresser, so I knew I would be keeping them for the rest of the drawers. I gave them two coats of the Bit of Sugar chalk paint (It was way too cold to use spray paint!), then scuffed them a bit here and there. I sealed them with this clear matte sealer.
I love the results!
I was pleasantly surprised at how well the paint did in such cold weather. It was barely out of the teens here:
And when your kiddos are out of school for three days due to inclement weather and icy roads, your photo shoots get special guest appearances like this:
Apparently he approves. 🙂
I love how the pretty details on this dresser stand out now…
I borrowed the chalkboard from my kitchen…
It might not make it back! (See that makeover and how I make my chalkboards HERE.) I guess I’m hoping to “achieve” something this year…not quite sure what that is just yet!
I liked my desk on this wall, but I moved it to accommodate our Christmas village. (I shared our village and why it’s so special HERE.)
I decided I like this dresser on this wall, so this is where it will live.

SO much lighter and happier now! I’m a sucker for bun feet and was surprised to see them on this piece – I thought you changed them out. A lovely, useful addition to your office. Never too much trash-to-treasure, as far I’m concerned. ( I was excited when I saw your email in my inbox. Ooh, it’s Tuesday! I squealed.)
Christy says
Thank you, Marcie! I was so happy to see it had those feet as well. Love that you are excited to see me in your inbox…totally made my day! XOXO
Carrie says
Simply stunning all by itself and in your office it’s really incredible. I must do this, you make it look so easy. So nice you had a helper! 🙂 I give it a thumbs up too!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Carrie! Love my little helper! 🙂 XO
Linda Petersen says
Beautiful piece! What did you do with the inside of the drawers? ????
Christy says
Thank you, Linda! I totally forgot to mention them, but the bottoms of the drawers are made of cedar and in really great shape, so I left them as is! 🙂
Debra Wise says
Another beautiful makeover Christy! You are such an inspiration! I’ve just about talked myself into trying to paint something and do the stripes but afraid mine would not be straight and be a mess. Thanks for the tutorial!
Christy says
Thank you, Debra! You can absolutely do this…the tape does all the hard work. 🙂
Debbie in TX says
This piece has great details, and I love the new drawer pulls. Loved seeing your son with a “thumbs up” in the photos!! I bet he’s a big helper. Also really liked the chalkboard addition on top. It just all works together. Great job!!
Christy says
Thanks, Debbie! My little loves hanging around with me while I’m taking photos for some reason, and I don’t mind the company! I like the chalkboard on top too…seriously thinking about keeping it there! 🙂 XO
Lizzy Leff says
I love it! Your use of white always makes my heart happy.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Lizzy! White paint makes just about anything better! XO
Barbara Ann Sandoval says
I Love It!! And it looks perfect against the new stone you installed. I’m really loving it. But not sure I could give up a wall when I couldn’t hang something on.
I’m assuming you can’t hang or put a nail in it??
Christy says
Thank you, Barbara! You can in between the stones if you have something lightweight to hang, or if you want to hang something heavier, you just drill through to the dry wall behind and install an anchor, use a little bit longer screw than normal, and you’re all set! XO
Deb Tyree says
Oh my! When I saw this my heart went pitter pat. So, elegant and yet sassy at the same time. Good call on changing out the knobs on the top drawers.
Christy says
So glad you like it, Deb!! Thank you! XOXO
Julie Briones says
Love it, Christy… can’t go wrong with stripes! Love how the detail came through with the white!
Christy says
Thanks, Julie!! You know I can’t resist stripes! And the white really does show off all those pretty details! XOXO
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says
Beautiful! Love the stripes and it looks perfect in your new room! xo
Christy says
Thanks, Nancy!! I couldn’t wait to get it done and in here so I could fill it up with my craft supplies that are still in boxes in my storage room, and today I just piddled…totally forgot I could fill it up now. Guess that will be on the agenda for tomorrow! Hope these kids go back to school soon so we can get together for our movie making class ha ha! XOXO
MaryJean says
Christy, the dresser turned out gorgeous! I love it! I have two pieces of news. I found a place that is renting space. The price per month is good, but it’s about 20 miles going south from my house which means where I live more snow, blizzards, etc., etc. Although I probably won’t be going there that often, however to take things there would be a hassle. My son told me to try a place that is only about a 15 minute ride from my house first. I will keep the long distance one in mind though.
Second news: I started a blog! I hope you get a chance to take a look and please feel free to make comments. You have been so inspiring and helpful. I appreciate your opinions and experience. “homeiswherethejourneybegins.blog”
Christy says
Thanks, MaryJean! Sounds like you may have a couple of good options there! My booth is about 20 minutes away and it isn’t too bad. I try to visit at least once a week. And CONGRATULATIONS on your blog!! How exciting! I just popped over there and left a comment. Am I the first? If so, lucky me! Blogging is a fun journey! I’ll pop over often and check it out! XOXO
MaryJean says
I just checked and there was no comment from you. Hmm, I might have to contact WordPress to see what’s going on. Thanks for stopping!
Christy says
Oh no…I hope you figure it out! I’d be glad to stop by again and leave another to test it out for you. 🙂
Christy says
Also check your email, you may see it there. You might need to turn comments on for them to appear on your blog? It did allow me to submit it with no problem.
Michelle says
When using the chalk paint, do you have to sand all the varnish off the piece before painting? Thanks
Christy says
Nope! That’s the beauty of chalk paint, no sanding needed at all! Here is my full chalk painting tutorial that takes you through the process: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/how-to-paint-furniture-using-chalk-paint/ Hopefully this will answer any other questions you might have! 🙂

Jen @ Girl in the Garage says
What an awesome score for your office! It’s funny, when I saw the Before photo I immediately thought of it as a card catalog (ha, I’m a card catalog girl for sure!) but that’s before I noticed all the pretty details. I’m glad you went this route. xo
Christy says
Thanks, Jen! I think it is a couple of your projects that make me love the card catalog look so much! Had I been planning on selling it, I think I might have gone with that look. 😀 XOXO
Annie says
It turned out beautiful Christy! But really I had no doubt that it wouldn’t 🙂 I love the strips <3
Christy says
Aww thanks, Annie!! XOXO
