Hello dear friends, and welcome back to my little corner of the web! I’m always so thrilled when y’all stop by! Today’s French Provincial Dresser Makeover is going to feel a bit like deja vu!
This dresser is the final piece in my FREE-to-me haul:
It is one of three pieces one of my sweet neighbors passed along to me over the Summer. I love when friends and neighbors look out for me!
I really should have titled this the deja vu dresser, because I have redone it to match the other of this set!
You can see more of that makeover HERE.
That wasn’t my original plan. I already had an idea of what I wanted to do with this longer piece, but after sharing its mate a couple of weeks ago, a local friend requested that I redo this one the very same for her!
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
The Prep
I planned to use Silk Mineral Paint on this dresser.
Because this dresser had been painted in a glossy finish, I started by sanding it all over to smooth it out and give the Silk paint something to grip onto:
I usually buy my sandpaper in bulk on Amazon since I use a ton of it, but the Rad Pad sanding pads are great for these curves!
Next, I vacuumed up all the sanding dust with my shop vac and then gave everything a good cleaning with White Lightning:
Just mix one TBSP with a 1/2 gallon of warm water. Once the piece is clean, swap the water for clean water and wipe everything down once more to remove any residue.
Once my pieces were clean and dry, I had my hubby help me move everything into my office since it was so cold in our garage!
Paint
Time for paint!
I gave everything two coats of Silk Mineral Paint in Anchor, a true black:
With Silk, you want to allow two hours between coats as it dries from the top down. Silk has a built-in topcoat, so unless you want a different sheen, that’s it!
Allow three to four weeks for your paint to fully cure before heavy use.
See the differences between painting with Silk Mineral Paint and Chalk paint HERE.
Adding a silkscreen stencil to the drawers
I decided to add the same Roses Silkscreen Stencil to the drawers on this dresser, just like I did on the first.
I used the included spatula and my Thing-a-ma-jig tool to apply the paint:
You just scoop up a bit of paint and rub it across the stencil surface.
The silkscreen stencils have a super fine screen in the open areas of the stencil. The tool pushes the paint through the screen.
They also have an adhesive back that allows for a super detailed stencil with practically zero bleed:
(That photo was from the first dresser makeover!)
The Roses Silkscreen stencil has two of these patterns included, but I only used one this time:
You should be able to get 8-10 uses from one stencil before the adhesive gives out, but I was able to complete six drawers, both sides for a total of 12 uses from just one!
It had zero stick left by the end, but I was determined, and the last one was just as detailed as the first!
See more on how to clean and store silkscreen stencils HERE.
And, see all ten silkscreen stencil sets in my shop HERE.
Just like the first dresser, I rehydrated the drawers with Big Mama’s Butta in Orange Grove scent:
The After
Let’s see how the longer version turned out, shall we?
Ooh la la!
As you can see, I also chose to add the same transfer to the front:
This is the Somewhere in France Transfer by Redesign by Prima. You can find HERE in my shop!
Applying the transfer across all those grooves!
When I agreed to paint this dresser just like the original, I hadn’t taken into account that the transfer would need to span across all those dips across the mid section.
On the first go round, I was able to apply it in whole pieces across each drawer.
To tackle this, I cut all the pieces for each section first. I centered the transfer on the center drawer and used a razor blade to trim the edges on both sides.
Then, I held up the rest of the transfer where I wanted it to go and used my razor blade to cut it along each edge, so this portion of transfer was cut into several strips:
Then I set about applying each one…first the drawer panel, then this first edge next to the drawer:
Then, the inset piece next to that…
And so forth until I had it all transferred!
That worked so much better than if I had tried to maneuver the transfer in an out of those details, and it turned out pretty seamless for having all those seams!
I love it on this piece every bit as much as I did on the first!
And the peekaboo drawers…
The hardware was spray painted in Rustoluem’s Bright gold:
There something so classic and elegant about black and gold together!
I hope you didn’t mind seeing this look again!
Here is the original for comparison:
It would have made a lovely set, but they will go to two different homes!
This is the third piece my neighbor gave me along with these two:
If you forgot what I did with this one, you can see it HERE!

Petra says
Absolutely super in black with the gold stencils and handles!
Christy says
Thank you, Petra!! XOXO
Robin Stephens says
Wow. Just wow. IDK if there are words to adequately state how lovely that is. The ‘extra mile’ you always go is amazing in and of itself, but the final reveal……..stunning. Whatever you sell your pieces for in your little shop isn’t enough. Priceless! (BTW, have you ever been to Relics in Smithfield? What a treat to walk around their sweet little shop. You’d love it!)
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Robin! I really appreciate that! I have not ventured to Smithfield in a long while, but I will keep that in mind for the next time we’re passing through! Always excited to find new places to visit! XOXO
Mary Kaiser says
Ooooh la la! So beautiful! The neighbor that’s getting this piece is so lucky to have a Christy original in her home! All of the items you re-do are like works of art, and you my friend are such a talented artist!!
Christy says
Aww you are the sweetest always! Thank you so much, Mary!! XOXO
Denise Cox says
Absolutely lovely, Christy!! A shame, in a way, that the pieces went to two different “families”. I just had a brainstorm… I play Powerball… and win.. buy a large B&B (close to you)… find someone to run it (I’m a retired RN and have NO business skills).. and YOU can refurbish ALL the pieces I find for the rooms!!!
If only…. ðŸ¤ðŸ˜‰ðŸ¤”😘
Christy says
Thank you, Denise! I know, right?? Ha ha I love that idea! I don’t want to run it either lol…just make it pretty! 😀 XOXO
Janice Holt says
Just like the other one, this turned out beautiful. Love the stencil on the sides of the drawers when you open them. So unexpected.
Christy says
Thank you, Janice! If only I was that detailed on my own pieces ha ha! XOXO
Christina says
Another black beauty! The transfers and stencils are so elegant. I agree black and gold area winning combination.
Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day.
Christy says
Thank you, Christina! Yes, love the black and gold! Happy Valentine’s to you too!! XOXO
Wendy says
Love, love. Love the black furniture! Beautiful details!
Great job!
Christy says
Thanks so much, Wendy! XOXO
Maria Rivera says
this piece is absolutely stunning, just love it!!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Maria! XOXO
Celia says
Whew that stencil looked labor intensive having to cut it all up but it turned out beautiful as usual!
Christy says
Thank you, Celia! Cutting it up definitely made it easier to tackle! XOXO
Katherine Iannuzzi says
Absolutely love this and the paint! I used it for a cabinet I picked up from facebook for cheap. The paint coverage is better than any chalk paint I’ve ever used. I do have a question, I am looking to redo my bedroom dressers with this paint that are already painted with Annie Sloan’s chalk paint, how would I prep them to use this paint over it? TIA
Christy says
Thank you, Katherine! It is wonderful paint! If you sealed with Annie Sloan’s wax, it is oil based, so you would need to remove that first. You can do that by giving it a good wipe down with odorless mineral spirits first. Then you can paint over the existing paint. I hope that helps! XOXO
Marcie Lovett says
Ooh, Christy, country farmhouse to Frenchy chic! I certainly did not mind seeing you work the process again, and am amazed at your skill with that transfer – that must have taken a LOT of patience! I actually think they’re better off separated because they’re such strong design elements; one in a room makes a statement, and the rest of the furniture just has to quietly step back a bit and play supporting roles😉
Christy says
Thank you, Marcie! Funny how these dresser can be made to match so many design styles! And I agree…one is perfect as a statement piece! XOXO
Elise says
Another SUPER WOW! Love what you did to the sides of drawers, Christy Such a cool, unexpected addition! Those two owners, I might add, are SO DARN LUCKY to have your two original masterpieces!!! P.S. I love how you find the time to respond to all comments, you continue to amaze!
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Elise! They are both going to fantastic people! And I love the interaction we all have here…it feels like being with a ton of best girlfriends! XOXO
Niki says
So good! I actually like this one better. I like that it is shorter and wider than the other one. I have a hard time reaching into tall dressers. So meticulous, all the effort you put into those books and crannies to get the stencil to work. It sure paid off!! Have a great weekend Christy!
Christy says
Thank you, Niki! I think the longer one has a bit more of a feminine feel too! Enjoy your weekend too, my friend! XOXO
Porsche Fischer says
You do such a great job on all of your projects and you motivate me to want to do my own! Thank you!
Christy says
Oh I love that, Porsche! Thank you so much! XOXO
Cecilia says
Ooo, that is just gorgeous. I think I like the longer piece better than the tall one. They are both elegant but this one….sigh. It really sings.
Christy says
Aww thank you, Cecilia! I was just saying that I think the longer one is bit more feminine too! It will be sad to see these go! XOXO
Nancy F Lambert says
The Dresser is Absolutely Beautiful..
Christy says
Thank you so much, Nancy! XOXO
Liz Shivel says
Beautiful job! I enjoy everything French and this is just lovely with the black and gold. Patience in working with the transfer and the razored pieces. Great!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Liz! Yes, the transfers stumped me for a minute with all those curves, but cutting it worked well! XOXO
Fran Blunt says
Oui Oui. Et Belle. In case my French isn’t correct I’m saying Yes Yes, It’s Beautiful! I’ve had The Dixie Belle black paint and got the transfer a while ago. I plan to do a Tea Cart with them. I love it and all things French Provincial. (There’s a story there.)
Christy says
Thank you, Fran! This look will be gorgeous on a tea cart! XOXO
Cyndi says
OMG, this is stunningly gorgeous!!! I love rub-on transfers, but I have to admit I’m a bit intimidated by these tiny bits and strips. Patience and a very sharp razor, right? Oh, and ease off on the caffeine beforehand. 😉
Christy says
Thank you so much, Cyndi!! And ha ha, definitely no caffeine first!! XOXO
Victoria Hempe says
Another beauty and so professional looking. Your ideas and skills are simply amazing!
Christy says
I appreciate that so much, Victoria, thank you!! XOXO
Karen Thompson says
Absolutely stunning! As always 🙂
Christy says
Aww thank you, Karen!! XOXO
Marian says
Yes, Christy, you are an artist! You give such attention to details, and that sets your work on a pedestal. I would love to have a “Christy Original” in my home.
Christy says
Aww you are so kind, Marian, thank you so much!! XOXO
Debbie says
Amazing, Stunning, so beautiful not enough words to describe the work you do! I just gave away a set just like this one. If I had been physically able I would have redone mine like these with the transfer on the chest of drawers and the dresser in black and gold to match. Nightstand too. Those special little extras you do are always amazing and sets you apart from the pack
Christy says
Wow, thank you, Debbie! I appreciate that so much! Whoever got your set is lucky!! XOXO
ROSE LEFEBVRE says
LOVELY! AND THAT LITTLE TOUCH OF THE ROSES ON THE DRAWERS IS SO WONDERFUL!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Rose! Those are the extra touches that make completing these projects so enjoyable! XOXO
Constance says
Absolutely beautiful!
Christy says
Thank you, Constance! XOXO
Carroll Xavier says
Such a gorgeous and elegant finish…the style really suits the black and gold! I also had to revisit the cane chair makeover; I’m a sucker for anything cane! Especially love the low back on it, and the plaid fabric really makes it look fresh.
Christy says
Thank you, Carroll! I think the style really suits this elegant color combo too! And I too love anything cane…I was so excited to revive that little chair! XOXO
Cecilia from Georgia says
How elegant! The long chest is so regal! Black and gold…can’t beat that! You always do such a good job with details; the side of the drawers…WOW!
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Cheryl! I love the black and gold together too! And those extra details really make a piece special! Hope you are enjoying your weekend! XOXO
Robin says
So nice, for second time. Any ghosting with this black?
Christy says
Thank you, Robin! I have not experienced any ghosting with the Silk black! XOXO
Sue H Mellette says
Beautiful makeover! What patience you must have to redo a piece. The beautiful stencil that you painstakingly added is just stunning. I love gold and black- and you are right a classic combination. Thanks for sharing. Enjoy your week!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Sue! I’m so glad you enjoyed this one! Have a wonderful week also! XOXO
