Hello sweet friends! I was planning to share the wooden sewing box that’s left in my Spring Haul today, but with all the festivities this weekend and yesterday, I didn’t get a chance to finish putting my post together. I will definitely have it for y’all on Thursday. In its place, I’m sharing one of my favorite Trash-to-Treasure Tuesday makeovers!
This lovely wall cabinet once hung above the toilet in my sister’s master bath:
She was just going to toss it out but asked me if I wanted it. Of course I did! I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
These are my favorite projects because you can really only go up from here, right?
I had it sitting in the garage upside down:
Do you see what I see? I thought it could be cute as a small floor cabinet if only it had feet on the bottom?
So, I set out to find a set of feet that would work and I found these on Amazon:
They were the perfect size for this cabinet!
Adding feet to the cabinet
You’ll need dowel screws to attach the new feet, and luckily, I had some on hand.
To attach these feet to the cabinet, I had to first drill a hole in the the top of the feet (just a tad smaller than the screws) with my drill, so that I could more easily insert the screws:
Then I used pliers to grip the screws as I twisted them into the holes:
I kept going until I had all of them about halfway in…
Then I needed to prep the new bottom of the cabinet so I could attach the new feet.
I cut pieces of scrap wood and attached them to either side using wood glue, followed my nail gun.
Then I pre-drilled holes for the feet and screwed them in place, adding a bit of wood glue for extra hold:
I knew the feet would not sit flush yet, so I found a scrap of poplar that I had on hand and cut into smaller pieces so that I could tuck them under the fee to better support them. I wood glued them in place also.
It isn’t pretty, but it does the job!
Fill holes
The next thing I did was fill in any holes and fill in where the knots in the pine had gaps using Dixie Mud:
I planned to move the hardware up, so I filled those holes too. When the Mud was completely dry, I sanded with 220 grit sandpaper wrapped around an old sanding sponge.
Prime knots
Next, I decided to go ahead and give it a coat of BOSS in White to cover those knots since they tend to bleed through over time.
Paint
Then I gave it two coats of Cotton on top of that. When it was completely dry, I sanded all over with 220 grit sandpaper to smooth out the finish and distress a little here and there.
The final step was to add a little something to the doors!
Adding more detail with a transfer
I went through my stash of transfers before starting this project and came across this Gingham Black transfer that I love and knew it was what I wanted to use!
Once the transfer was attached, I sealed with Clear Coat in Satin using a blue sponge applicator.
The result
Here is this wall cabinet repurposed as a free-standing floor cabinet!
Super cute, right?? And those feet are just right!
It is the perfect size for any small space to add a little extra storage, but especially a bathroom!
The gingham adds a touch of charm to this piece, but it is still neutral enough to fit with just about any color scheme.
And these handles are one of my favorites from Hobby Lobby.
While the outside remains quite neutral, I decided to have fun with the inside…
With a pop of color! This is Pure Ocean and it is a true, deep turquoise.
Rehabbing things that were destined for the trash is my absolute favorite!
I hope you enjoyed it too!
I’ll definitely be back on Thursday with this sweet sewing box!

I have a four poster bed in my guest room painted pure ocean. It is one of my favorite Dixie Belle colors. I never would have thought of turning that cabinet upside down.
I don’t think it will stay very long in your shop.

This is another great result well done! I really like your blog and your work but — hard truth– the sheer number of ads through your posts make it so hard to read them. There’s one after almost every paragraph and every photo, and usually the same thing over and over. I’ve been a reader for a while and been really inspired but I can’t struggle through the ads anymore.
Christy says
Thank you, Nic! I have a trick for you! If you are on mobile, after you arrive at my post, click on the Aa in the upper left hand corner next to the URL. Then select “Show Reader” in the dropdown, and you will only see the photos and text, no ads. I do appreciate your honesty, but the ads pay the bills around here. I try to only have ads that you can scroll by. The best paying ad is a pop up video player that you will see on most other blogs. I have that disabled for a better reading experience. Take care. XOXO

Greetings from very cold and frosty Tasmania, Australia! What you’ve done is perfect Christy 🙂 and I’m a HUGE HUGE fan of gingham! I have recently purchased a very similar piece in old pine and it’s too big (and heavy) for where I wanted to hang it so you’ve inspired me to “chop and change” and I’ve now got a brilliant idea of what I’m going to do! As always, you’re very inspiring 🙂 xo
Christy says
Oh no! I feel for you down there in the freezing cold! It is the opposite here…hot hot hot and very humid! And thank you, my friend! I’m a gingham fan myself. Yay…glad you have a plan B for your pine piece! Have fun with it and stay warm! XOXO
