Welcome back, beautiful friends and welcome to Trash-to-Treasure Tuesday!! I’ve definitely got a trashy makeover for you today, and it is the perfect candidate to share how to cover a stool with vinyl! Be sure to look for my friends’ trashy makeovers at the bottom!
I picked up this stool that was marked down to $6.98 at the thrift store:
Poor thing….you know it’s bad when you get discounted at the thrift store!!
The faux leather was crumbling apart on the top:
I found this the same day that I shared this desk not too long ago:
Just a tiny hint to tell you where this is going!
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
I started this makeover by removing the nailheads using this handy tool:
It’s meant for staples, but worked here too!
Once those were removed, I flipped it over to remove the always over-stapled part on the bottom:
I quickly ditched that idea and grabbed a utility knife instead and just cut away the pleather upholstery, leaving all those staples in place:
Yay for less work!
Next, I painted the legs in the same Pink Champagne color I used on the desk. Yep, it’s going to be a mate to that sweet desk!
I found this fun hot pink fabric in my stash to cover the underside of the stool, including all those staples I refused to remove…
I lightly sanded the legs to smooth and distress just a bit, and then to tie the stool to the desk even more, I chose to add some of the same Flower Child Transfer I used on the desk to just one of the legs:
Can Lyla get any closer?? The legs then got sealed with Clear Coat in Satin uisng the blue sponge applicator.
How to Cover a Stool with Vinyl
Time for the good part…it was time to cover the stool, and I chose white marine vinyl I picked up at Joann Fabrics.
I used the same vinyl on our kitchen stools that I made over HERE.
I cut it so that it would overhang on all sides about an inch past the bottom of the bench.
Then I laid it right side down on top of my stool and pinned all four corners like so:
Next, I took it to my machine and sewed all four corners where I had pinned:
I trimmed any excess vinyl on those corners and turned it right side out before placing it over the stool…
To secure the vinyl to the stool, I stuck with the original look and used nailheads:
I just folded the vinyl under where it went around the legs and then made a cut so that it would wrap under the edges on the sides.
And luckily, I was able to cheat and use the same holes as before:
That was a huge help!! You can also use this tool to help hold and measure your nailheads if you aren’t as lucky.
Finally, I flipped it over and secured the vinyl to the underside of the stool with my staple gun:
I did this to cover the raw edge of the fabric underneath.
The After
Let’s see if I was able to marry these two pieces??
I think so!
Now it’s a complete set!
What I like about adding the white stripes to the desk is that it helped to give me somewhere to go with the fabric I chose to cover the stool.
It also allows whoever buys this set to easily match it to solid white furniture pieces that may be in the same space.
The nailheads are a great way to finish off any upholstery piece.
And the transfer on the leg is unexpected but really ties it to the desk.
You can find this transfer in my shop HERE.
I really wanted a solid white for the stool cushion so it didn’t take away from everything else that’s going on with these pieces, but I also wanted it to be easy to clean, and the vinyl is perfect for that!
And the bottom is pretty too!
I hope you enjoyed this trashy makeover today! This set will be heading to the shop this week!

So lovely together! You might put the little pair up front of your booth so it’s easy to remove….it won’t be there long!! I painted my cute chair with DB Conch and covered the seat in a pretty fabric! Love the color Conch and there are so many new Silk colors!! Tough decision for which color to choose next!!

LORRI says
Love, love, love this cute bench. A stroke of genius putting on the transfer on the one of the legs.😋 Just enough to tie it in with the dresser. I also love the flowers in the transfer. If it can’t get any cuter there is Lyla watching Momma do her thing..😂I just wonder how do you take the pic and do your work all at the same time.. I’m thinking that you are probably by yourself when doing yr refinishing? Kristy, you have magic in those hands.. love reading your blog.
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Lorri!! You are the sweetest!! I take pics with my left hand lol. I did have Brennan take a couple of photos for me when he was home sick a couple weeks back, but it’s usually just me! And Lyla is my little sidekick…she’s never far away! XOXO
Niki says

Sharon L Austin says
Most excellent! They look so good together!! I used that same pink fabric for a cigar box gift I made a couple years ago, I love it; it’s so fun.
Christy says
Thank you, Sharon! It’s such a cute fabric! XOXO
Cyndi says
Once again…amazing! And, Christy, I love your honesty. When something doesn’t work the way you thought it would, you tell us about it, and that helps me through my own projects. Thank you!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Cyndi! I’m so glad that is helpful! Not everything goes perfectly around here lol! XOXO
Dale says
With the mineral paint you have to use a topcoat, But not on the silk?
Christy says
Hi Dale! The Chalk Mineral paint is very flat and does much better with a topcoat. The Silk Mineral Paint has a slight sheen and has a topcoat built-in, so you only need to seal that if you want additional protection or a different sheen. XO

Oh, yeah, they’re a pair! That poor little bench is breathing a sigh of relief now 😉, knowing that someone is going to love it for many years. BTW, what is up with all those staples?!? I have an antique chair that was reupholstered 3 times and there were hundreds of staples and tiny tacks. I still refer to it as “the chair of 1000 tacks” 🤣
Christy says
Right?? I was so happy to find that bench, but it must be so happy too lol! And lawd, yes! I don’t know why every upholstery project has so many dang staples??! Glad I was able to cheat my way around that part this time! 😀 XOXO
