Amazing friends, the piece I am sharing today belongs my awesome Mom! She has wanted this hutch painted for a very long time now:
It is such a lovely piece of furniture, but with the dark floors and the dark kitchen cabinets to the left of this piece, it made this area feel like a dark hole.
Before I get to the big reveal, I’m being joined by my Furniture Fixer Upper girls today, so be on the lookout for their furniture makeovers at the bottom!
Painting the Hutch
My Mom prefers a creamier white and so I gave her two choices that Dixie Belle makes: Drop Cloth and Buttercream.
She immediately chose the Buttercream.
Here it is with one coat on the bottom and two coats on the top:
She was afraid it looked too white before seeing the second coat go on.
I ultimately gave it a total of three coats for solid coverage, and after three days of work, it was complete:
It took almost a whole 32 oz sized jar to paint it doing three coats.
This is such a lovely soft, buttery color. It almost has a very slight yellow undertone and I think that is what makes it such a pretty color. Drop cloth has no yellow undertones.
I only lightly sanded with 220 grit sandpaper as my Mom does not like a ton of heavy distressing…
I sealed with Dixie Belle’s Clear Coat in satin using a blue sponge applicator.
This is my Mom’s set of transferware that has always been on this hutch, and I think the lighter color is a much prettier backdrop.
Here is a pic she found on her cell phone from a few years ago:
She may have taken that one mid jumping jack.
She also wanted to change out the original wooden knobs, and I was lucky enough to find a set of these pretty ones in my stash at home that were perfect:
I found these at TJ Maxx a couple of years ago and had forgotten all about them!
I couldn’t have found anything better if I tried!
The sides of this pretty hutch give it a farmhouse feel…
And in this photo, you can see a peek at the living room. This hutch now matches the rest of the space better!
And here it is from the other side looking towards the dining area and kitchen…
That area feels so much lighter and more airy now, and it is a nice contrast to the dark floors and cabinets in the kitchen.
I hope y’all enjoyed this one, I know my Mom did!
Don’t forget my friends are sharing furniture flips of their own today!
I’ll be back on Tuesday with this case I picked up for $4.98:
I’ve been hanging onto this one for a while so it will be nice to see it done!
UPDATE: It’s done and it turned out better than I thought it would! See it HERE now! 🙂
Then, I’ll return on Thursday with the sofa table a couple of y’all wanted to see! Have a great weekend and stay safe!
XOXO,

I love your makeovers! I’ve been wanting to do a large TV cabinet but I’m wondering if I can mix painted pieces with unpainted? How do I coordinate different finishes in my small house?
Christy says
Thank you, Sue! You sure can. One idea is to keep the top stained, and paint the rest. XOXO
Sue Pagel says
Thank you!
Christy says
You’re welcome! XO

The dresser (English word for it) is beautiful. I can see what you mean by the yellow undertones; they come through against the pink china, which is so pretty.
I’m moving house next week and can’t wait to start trying out some furniture makeovers. Thanks for all your inspiration
Christy says
Thank you, Holly! Best of luck with your move!! XOXO

xo
Christy says
Thanks so much, Christina! It really looks so much brighter in that space now and yes, it showcases her beautiful dishes so nicely! XOXO
Sandra says
Do you really paint items with out a drop cloth …just small pieces of paper. I can’t imagine being that neat. I get paint all over me.
Christy says
Ha ha.. I did have a small drop cloth that I was moving with me as I went. I must have moved it out of the way for the photo! XOXO
Nancy says
Your mom’s hutch is a beautiful piece of furniture. I can see why she has wanted to have it painted. It really inhances the whole area now.
Christy says
Thank you, Nancy! I was surprised to see how much it really changed the look of her space! XOXO
Elizabeth Marchak says
Huge improvement! Nice job. This piece is the perfect argument for whiteish paint. I can’t help but think, however, that a different color or a cool fabric on the back of the shelves could knock it out of the park. The fabric could be applied with Mod Podge and replaced at will.
Christy says
Thank you, Elizabeth! That could be really pretty! I added a black damask paper to the back of our hutch at our old house and I loved the look! XOXO
Cindy says
Oh you sweet daughter, your mom’s hutch looks soooooo much cuter painted! It makes the pretty details show up so much better. She and I have the same taste, even the same white plates on the wall as well as lots of red and white plates hanging. Bet she’s proud of you! And what you’ve become to so many faithful followers! You help us all not to be afraid to redecorate a piece and give us so many wonderful ideas. Another job well done!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Cindy!! I really appreciate that! She is proud, but she taught me to not be afraid to go for it. I am so grateful for that! XOXO
Michelle says
Looks great, Christy! What a difference. You are a good daughter!!!
Christy says
Aww thanks, Michelle! I am glad that I could do this for her! XOXO
Kelly Howard says
This is always my problem with using white; it often lacks warmth..this color doesn’t lack warmth and I am IN LOVE! This piece is simply southern elegance at its finest. XOXO
Christy says
I’m so glad you like it, Kelly! It is a lovely color indeed! Thank you! XOXO
Debra says
Wow!! Complete transformation! I personally would have passed by the original before, but, the after is fabulous! Nice job!
Christy says
Thank you, Debra! Paint for the win! XOXO
Kathy E. says
What a gorgeous piece it is now! The Buttercream color really gives the hutch a whole new look and life…such a sweet thing to do for your mom!
Did you need to sand or prep the stained finish before applying the Dixie Belle paint?
Christy says
Thank you, Kathy! She is very happy with it. There is no need to sand or prime most pieces when using Dixie Belle! You may need a primer (BOSS) if you have an antique piece that could potentially bleed-through, but no sanding is needed! XOXO
Jerri says
Good morning! It’s amazing how paint can transform a piece. The hutch doesn’t have such a heavy look anymore and her dishes look pretty displayed against the Iighter color.
My grandma refinished antiques and her love for antiques has carried down through the next generations. She stripped the paint and stained her pieces. Because I know the time and work he put into refinishing, I struggle with painting or not. I do love the painted transformations you share. I definitely want to update some pieces. Thank you for sharing and inspiring.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Jerri! The paint really did give it such a lighter feel. I do understand your concern with painting pieces after watching your Grandma. That might make it harder for me too! XOXO
gwen says
As usual, I cringed a little bit when thinking about painting your mom’s beautiful hutch, but what a great transformation! Now it really does match the rest of her rooms and the transferware looks so much better with the lighter color setting it off!
Christy says
Oh ha ha! I’m so glad it didn’t disappoint, Gwen! Thank you!! It really does flow with the rest of her space so much better now! XOXO
Gail Miller says
Fantastic! Definitely agree it looks better with floor and transferware. Thanks for providing me with inspiration to repurpose.
Christy says
Thank you, Gail!! I love that you are feeling inspired!! XOXO
Kris @ Junk Chic Cottage says

Mary Emmons says
I LOVE it! Usually I just do things in the correct order. Look at old picture, read redo instructions, and then see finished product. Today I couldn’t! I immediately scrolled down to see the finished product. Kinda like reading the last chapter in a book first. Oh my, beautiful.
Christy says
Oh ha ha…I love that you couldn’t wait, Mary! Thank you so much!!
Claudia Januchowski says
It’s beautiful! I’m sure your Mom just loves it! Thanks for sharing your talent with us😘 Stay healthy,
Claudia
Christy says
Thank you, Claudia! She really does love it! You stay well too! XOXO
Rhonda Storey says
This turned out beautifully Christy! I actually had that same China years ago! I have a similar hutch that I found in an antique shop in Asheville, NC a few years ago, and I painted mine too in a creamy color. That was my first time trying Annie Sloan chalk paint. I used the clear wax on it after I painted it. Boy was that a lot of work!! I tend to go for using a poly coat now! Lol! I’m 66 now with painful hands so it’s hard to do a lot of painting now, but I’m about to strip the top of my dining room table. Wish me luck!
Christy says
Thank you, Rhonda! I hear ya on the wax…it is too much work! Lots of luck on your dining room table!! XOXO
sharon austin says
That looks great! I was thinking about using “fluff” on mine, but she has a similar table to mine so maybe I should use buttercream instead!!
Christy says
Thank you, Sharon! Fluff is more of a white or what I call vintage white, while this is definitely more cream. Lots to consider! XOXO
Kellie says
Your Mom’s hutch turned out beautiful. It is amazing what paint can do, looks like a totally different piece!
Christy says
Thank you, Kellie! It really does look like different piece!! XOXO
Beth Metcalf says
WOW 😦 It’s totally gorgeous now! You really did an awesome job, I love it!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Beth!! XOXO
Mary W says
I can’t wait for Christmas – promise you will show us how it looks once she decorates it for the holidays – promise? This was not my style and almost didn’t look at the after – boy what a mistake that would have been as it is simply gorgeous! The wooden curved columns across the front are what threw me. But once that wonderful color was all over – they are the stand out part to me. Almost like a lovely decorative doily or cutwork tablecloth. Those columns make it a showstopper in my opinion but the dinnerware puts it over the top. Somehow that lovely pink/red screams ‘look at me – I’m gorgeous’! That is why I can’t wait for the holiday decorations – feast for the eyes, I’m sure.
Christy says
I will definitely try to remember to get a photo at Christmas! And see? This is why you should always take a peek at the after lol! I’m so glad you like it! And yes, the details and the dinnerware really stand out now! XOXO
Sue H Mellette says

Cecilia says
Omg, what a huge difference! Love how it turned out. Looks so much nicer and updated! I bet your mom is thrilled.
Christy says
Thank you, Cecilia! My Mom is over the moon with it! XOXO
Candy says
Gorgeous, what a difference and the knobs are perfect with just a little “lacy” touch to them. Really makes the dishes pop, I am sure she is thrilled. Blessings, Candy
Christy says
Thank you, Candy! I love how the knobs look too…I couldn’t really go buy any, so I was so happy to find those in my stash! She loves it for sure! XOXO
Sharon Rexroad says
She’s so pretty in her new dress! And what a lovely collection of “Old Britain Castles” your mother has – red & white transferware is a favorite.
Christy says
Thank you, Sharon!! I love how this new color really shows off her transferware! XOXO
TerryM says
Certainly a beautiful hutch before but I think paint makes everything better. Love the after, it’s gorgeous and the China really “pops” against the lighter color.
Christy says
Thank you, Terry! Me too! XOXO

That hutch looks so much better painted. It really makes her transferware pop. Really pretty!
Christy says
Thank you, Lani! It is a lovely background for her transferware now! XOXO

I would die to get ahold of that hutch. Lol Gorgeous!!! Your mom has good taste. I love her house and that striped wall!!!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Megan! She really does have good taste! She let me paint the wall when I was doing a collaboration with Frogtape several years ago. She asked if I thought we should paint it back to all one color, but I told her no as I love it too! XOXO
Linda Johnston says
The hutch is so lovely especially to showcase the red transfer ware.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Linda! It really is such a nicer backdrop for the transferware! XOXO
Terry Moore says
Such a pretty hutch and you made it prettier! Love it!
Christy says
Thanks so much, Terri! XOXO
Christy says
That should be “Terry”…my fingers are faster than my brain ha ha!
Karen says
This hutch is absolutely beautiful in white! I LOVE it! May I ask how you prepped it (primer? sand between coats?) and did you use brushes or a paint gun to paint it? Did you put a protective finish coat after painting it? Sorry to ask to much, but I really love how you did this and would love to do a dresser in the same color/paint. Thank you!
Karen
Christy says
Thank you so much, Karen! With Dixie Belle paint, there is no need to prime or sand first. The only exception would be if you had an antique piece that might bleed through. That would require a coat of BOSS first. I did not sand in between coats, but gave it a sand after. I sealed with Dixie Belle’s Clear Coat in Satin to protect it. I linked to all the products in the post if you want to see more. XOXO
Cecilia from Georgia says

Lovely job. My mother would turn over in her grave were I do to the seme to her hutch…….Old Britain Castles? That’s my dining room china. love it. Well done piece. Bright and cheerful, no matter the weather outside..
Christy says
Thank you, MJ! It really does brighten up the room, and the transferware is the same as yours I believe. It is so classic and lovely! XOXO
Cheryl Atkinson says
Hi Christy! Oh my gosh it looks so much better and it really goes well in her house. I bet she is on cloud nine. Love her dishes. My mom had some really pretty blue and white ones that now belong to me. I’m saving them for my granddaughter because my daughter is not the sentimental kind. She is more of a minimalist. Drives me crazy. Again, I have this color and I have never used it. Does it really look yellow? I wonder if I mixed it with Fluff? Or cotton maybe? Let me know what you think.
Christy says
Thanks so much, Cheryl! The paint really brings out all the pretty details and it really does go so much better with her house and dishes. I love the blue too…such a lovely thing to have to pass down. This color is like a buttery cream so just the slightest hint of a yellow undertone. It is really pretty and would be lovely also mixed with either the Fluff or Cotton. Mix it up and see what you think on a scrap piece. XOXO
Judith Laurence says
Love, Love, Love this transformation. It brightens the entire are and harmonizes with the dining table and chairs so well. Another one in your Plus column!! Your Mother ust be SOOO proud of you and your talents.

Well, Christy, from all the responses it seems I’m not the only one that loves the new look of your mom’s hutch! It is truly one of my favorites! The china stands out and looks so pretty on the new paint color! I love that pattern and have a few of those pieces, too – the exact creamer, sugar, and tea pot! 🙂 You never disappoint!!
Christy says
Aww thank you, Patty! Yes, it appears that this is a fan favorite! My Mom has enjoyed reading all the comments. The transferware is lovely and really stands out in this piece now! XOXO

Susan says
Hi Christy,
I just saw this now; thanks for the re-link. It’s been a crazy few months!
I love to see beautiful wood grain; but I also love the look of painted furniture. So this always creates a dilemma for me: ‘Desecrate’ beautiful wood or leave it dark and dreary? Lol. So when I saw your mom’s hutch, which had such beautiful grain, I was like, what to do? What to do?However, I knew you had already painted it so I didn’t really have to decide, lol. I like both, but the painted IS better!
So, I love that rope border! A few years back, I saw a table with rope legs on Pinterest (I saved a pic, lol) and it was painted mint green and was being used as a sewing table. And I fell in love with it. This is the only other piece that I’ve ever seen with that beautiful rope trim! So, I’m wondering what is the history of this piece? Did your mom thrift it like you do? Or has it been in the family for years? These pieces look so beautiful painted because it really shows off the gingerbread (not to mention the dishes. I also have some modern transfer ware in both the pink and the blue, because I couldn’t make up my mind which I liked better so I bought both, lol). Anyway, I’d love to know more about this piece because I hope someday to find a piece with rope trim for myself!
Secondly, does your top coat ever yellow? I painted a bed I built a few years ago (periwinkle) & as I was on a very tight budget, I used a couple Valspar wall paint samples, which is pretty flat. I was going to topcoat it with “non-yellowing” poly, but when I read the fine print, it said it might yellow if applied over paint. And I thought, “Yuck! Yellow over lavender would look just awful. So I didn’t use it so the bed has a chalk like finish. So, I’m just wondering about the Dixie Belle?
Thirdly, I’ve been wanting to ask you about this for a long time, but cringe about bringing this up: When thrifting, do you ever worry about bed bugs in the furniture? Have you ever had a bad experience? I got nervous, because in the last several years, apartment complexes are constantly invading to check for bed bugs because it’s become a terrible, widespread problem, and they warn about bringing in second hand furniture for this reason. My grand mother was a hard working furniture refinisher, too, and I guess I inherited that interest from her. But I’ve also had some close (& unpleasant) encounters with mold, so I worry about that too.
And lastly, as soon as I saw the shot that included you mother’s kitchen, I thought, “Uh oh! Now your mom is going to want you to paint her kitchen cupboards, too, lol! So funny. It’s like Lays potato chips: you can’t do just one, lol! One project leads to the next. “Oh, the hutch looks so beautiful, it makes the cupboards look so dreary in comparison!” And then, “Now that the cupboards look so good, it makes the ______ look so dreary. I guess we’ll have to redo that too!”
Haha haha.
I really enjoy your projects. I get to see the lovely results without lifting a finger! 😁🤣😂🙃😃😄
Christy says
Thank you, Susan! My mom purchased this hutch about 25-30 years ago to match a dining set. She has since replaced the dining set but always loved this piece. The paint brought it right up to date! As for the top coat, I love Dixie Belle because it does not yellow over paint. It is awesome! And regarding bed bugs, I’ve been very lucky so far lol! XOXO
Michele M. says
WOW! What a stunning difference! I cannot believe how much better it looks in that space. You did a great job, and she chose well, too.
Must feel great to make your mom so happy.
Christy says
Thank you, Michele! Paint really updated this piece for sure. My Mom loved it so much, and that makes me really happy! XOXO
