Hey there, lovelies, and welcome back! It’s Furniture Fixer Upper day, and I’ve got a pretty little oak drop leaf side table makeover for you! And not only do I have a brand new furniture makeover to share, so do my friends, so be on the lookout for their makeovers at the bottom!
Let’s get to it!
Here is the oak drop leaf side table I shared a sneak peek of on Tuesday:
As you can see, it had quite a few boo boo areas on the front there, and also on the top:
It was only $10 though, so I didn’t think twice about grabbing it up!
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Sand
If I were to paint over that damaged finish, you would see the damaged areas right through the paint, so the first step in this makeover was to sand the damaged surfaces with my rotary sander:
(That is actually sweat on the back of my hand…ew. It was SO hot outside while I was sanding this a couple of weeks ago!)
This sander is great and comes in a corded and cordless version. I started with 120 grit sandpaper and finished with 220 grit.
Embellishing with casting resin
I decided this piece could use some simple embellishing using one of my casting moulds from Redesign. I have used this same mould several times on projects to create a fancy little piece made from resin.
To make it, I used Amazing Casting Resin and this Decor Mould by Redesign by Prima.
- The resin kit comes with two bottles that you combine equal parts of. I poured those into the cups provided. (Image 1)
- Then I poured them into a 3oz bathroom sized cup and mixed well. (Image 2)
- Immediately after mixing, I gently poured the mixture into my mould, being sure not to overfill. (Image 3) I had a couple of other moulds on hand that I poured the excess mixture into as not to waste it.
- After waiting about 10-15 minutes, I was able to remove my new embellishment from the flexible mould. (Image 4)
I used E6000 glue to attach it and allowed it to dry for a few hours. (There is a NO ODOR formula now woohoo!!)
Paint…should’ve BOSSed!
I knew this piece might have issues with bleeding where I sanded, but did I take the time to BOSS first to prevent any bleed through?
No, I didn’t.
Because I know I can still apply a coat of Boss after painting in the event that I do get bleed-though, I took my chances and gave the top a coat of Fluff.
And…I got bleed through:
Right where I sanded!
You can really see it compared the right side that did not need to be sanded first.
BOSS to the rescue…again
No biggie. I applied one coat of White BOSS (also available in clear and gray), and allowed it to dry overnight.
Then, I was able to get painting!
I gave the top another coat of Fluff and decided to pull out a pretty blue from the Terra Clay line for the legs.
Except…
I wasn’t feeling it.
This is Lani’s Lagoon, but it was just a bit too bold of a blue, and it didn’t fit quite right for this style of table in my opinion.
I’d love to try it on a less formal looking piece in the future because it is really pretty!
So, Silk Baja Gray to the rescue!
I painted it right over the Lani’s Lagoon:
Silk does require that you sand first or use Slick Stick first for proper adhesion. I decided to test it over the clay paint and see if it adhered well to that since it is very flat.
I’ll hang onto this piece for a couple of weeks and see how it does once it has has time to cure a bit and report back!
Highlighting the details with wax
I wanted to highlight the resin piece a bit and for that I chose Gray Best Dang Wax:
I would also need the clear wax, so I grabbed that also.
Chalk paint really likes to soak up the darker waxes, so it is a good idea to Clear wax first if you plan to use a dark wax, for more control.
Here, I went ahead with the gray wax and applied it all over my resin piece using my French Tip brush, which is perfect for the smaller details:
Then, I came back in with my clean, soft cloth with just a little clear wax on it and wiped it back:
The Clear Wax acts as an eraser and will help to remove any excess color, you don’t want.
Seal
Since I was already using wax, I sealed the rest of the top with Best Dang Wax in clear.
There was no need to seal the legs since I used Silk on those, and Silk has a built-in topcoat.
Let’s see how this pretty little table turned out shall we?
The After
It looks a whole lot different now, right?
You could keep going with the gray wax and highlight all around the outside, but just a little wax works for me here.
And that little resin piece really changes the look, don’t you think?
I have used this same mould on so many projects like HERE, HERE, HERE, and HERE!
And how about some secret peekaboo stripes on the underside??
I really wanted to add a coordinating decoupage paper there, but I just couldn’t settle on one that went well enough, so stripes it is!
Adding a secret stripe
To add a peekaboo stripe to the underside, I used FrogTape for delicate surfaces:
They have three sizes that I know of, so be sure to check the size before purchasing online. This is the widest at 1.88 inches.
It’s secret because no one knows it’s there while the sides are up shhhhh.
I removed the tape while my paint was still wet.
I add stripes to things often because they are just so easy!
You can see how I add them easily without any math HERE.
The wall decor here started out as a pair of mirrors that I replaced with decorative sheet metal. You can see more of that makeover HERE.
And how many of y’all remember that Vintage Travel case?? I redid that WAY back in 2017 when we still lived at our old house!
You can see that full makeover HERE.
I hope ya’ll enjoyed this simple makeover today!
Don’t forget that my friends have three more furniture flips for you to enjoy:
1. Salvaged Inspirations
2. Petticoat JUNKtion
3. Girl in the Garage

I think it turned out so cute! I agree with you about the color being to much for the style of the table. You saved the day with the gray!! I hope you back is better soon, it’s terrible to have your back out!
Christy says
Thank you, my friend! Yes, that bold blue was a bit too much for sure! And thank you, I’m nursing my back today and taking it easy…hoping I’m back at it soon! Have a wonderful weekend! XOXO
Janette says
Looks beautiful and I just love the strips underneath, gorgeous attention to detail. x
Christy says
Thank you so much, Janette! I’m so glad you enjoyed the surprise stripes! XOXO
Susan says
Sorry you hurt your back. I can relate, as I have a lot of back trouble.
I really like how the resin piece looks; but I do wonder if it would be annoying if you actually wanted to use the table top for something, say a dinner plate or to write a letter. 😂
I love the surprise stripes. That aqua color made me think the table was wearing tights on its legs! 😝🌷
Christy says
Thank you, Susan! Back trouble is no fun for sure! The embellishment is right on the edge, so plenty of usable flat space. 🙂 Tights ha ha!! Those tights were definitely not working lol! XOXO
Alli Winter says
Hi Christy –
Can you share the Amazon links or the info on the flip flops I often see you wearing in your pics? I like wider band that come actors the foot and they look like there a pattern in the weave. I think I’ve seen you wear a couple different styles. Thank you!
Christy says
Hi Alli! How do you know I buy almost all of my clothes and shoes on Amazon? Ha ha…it’s true! The gray an hot pink ones I’m wearing in this post are Skechers that are sadly no longer available anywhere (I’ve tried to find them!), but I love these also: https://amzn.to/3QYPy9y They are super comfy, and I have them in a few colors! XOXO

You always impress me with the many steps you take to make something all-the-way…not just merely painted. My mom had that same (heavy!) Ethan Allen table (as well as many other EA pieces). I still have two of the dining captain’s chairs. That furniture will be around “forever.” So well made. You did well by that little piece. 💕
Christy says
Aww I appreciate that so much, Robin! Thank you! Ethan Allen pieces are definitely built to last! XOXO
Marietta says
This is the most elegant table…EVER! Everything about it flows and oozes custom-made for the wealthy. It quietly says “Hello-I am POSH”.
Simply Beautiful.
Christy says
Oh I love that so much, Marietta! Thank you!! XOXO
MrsSW says
Goodness – that Terra Clay blue is so bright it hurts your eyes! Love the “save” though. You are so clever and talented.
Sheila
Christy says
Ha ha, right?? I think it could be pretty on the right piece, but this was just not it! Thank you, Sheila! XOXO
Elise Howell says
Hi Christy,
I love this drop leaf table with the surprise of stripes. Your creative pieces often have an extra “layer” of enjoyment, like when you line the drawers with some cool fabric. I just wanted to let you know, I even clicked on HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE afterward— all four of them —- to remember how you used that favorite resin piece you make! Each one so different and fun. I guess I’m telling you that I had thoroughly good time skipping around your website and seeing all the wonderful transformations. Have you ever estimated how many things you’ve re-created??? Or how many years that you have shared your genius projects with us folks? Please let me know, seems I remember seeing snippets of your adorable kids pretty young?? Anyway, I just got to wondering and I thought you might keep a bit of a count… Hugs from San Diego, Elise
Christy says
Oh my goodness, Elise, you are the sweetest!! Thank you so much and I love that you enjoyed peeking at those past projects! I’ll admit, I do it too…then I end up down the rabbit hole ha ha! I haven’t kept a count of all the projects, but I will be celebrating my ten year blogiversary in November! My youngest was two when I started…so crazy! It has been such a blessing to be able to share and “meet” so many amazing like-minded people! I truly appreciate you following along with me!! XOXO
Cecilia says
Ouch! I feel your pain-tweaked my back a week ago so last week I didn’t get a chance to finish my painting. Just couldn’t stand at the easel! Hope you heal quickly! The table turned out pretty. The hidden stripes are the bomb!
😊Cecilia
Christy says
Oh no…back injuries are the worst! I hope you are on the mend. I’ll be resting the rest of the week for sure! Thank you so much, Cecilia! XOXO
Robin says
I love all you do and your imagination is absolutely out of this world. I sometimes wish I could see things as you do. However I can’t say I love the grey. Greys and blues are my least favorite colors. In saying that I do love the stripes you did on the underneath. (Just not the grey) I love your work though.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Robin!! It’s okay if you don’t love the gray…you were very nice about it ha ha! XOXO
Rebecca Zoal says
I have that exact drop-leaf side table; in fact, two of them. Now I know what to do with them and they will be repurposed to another room in my home (after the holidays). Thanks for the inspiration.
Christy says
Oh awesome!! I’m so glad I could give you a little inspiration for yours! XOXO
Ashley says
Good morning, Christy! Lovely table! I agree with you abt the green legs—beautiful color, but the Baja Gray is better here. Also, love the stripes underneath—so clever and such a surprise! Nicely done.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Ashley!! Yes, the Baja was definitely the winner here! Have a lovely weekend!! XOXO
Deborah Mealus says
Back problems are the worst! Feel better soon!

Christy says
They are! And once you tweak you back, it seems to happen so easily again. I appreciate the well wishes, my friend! XOXO
Niki says
This turned out lovely Christy. I agree the blue was too bold, but fun to see!! 😊I think I may have said this before, but drop leaf tables, especially small ones; are one of my favorite things. They are a hard to find items in my neck of the woods, and on the off chance I do find one usually the owner isn’t selling.
Christy says
Thanks so much, Niki! I am determined to use that blue on something lol. I do love a drop leaf table as well and just had to jump on this one. I wish lots of luck in your search! XOXO
Denise - Salvaged Inspirations says

Christy says
Thank you so much, Annette! XOXO
Cyndi says
Another beautiful piece! Good call on the colors (in my humble opinion). 🙂
I love those surprise stripes too. Good tip about using clear wax as an “eraser.” I didn’t know that, but I am taking notes.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Cyndi! That blue was not working lol. And yes, the clear wax is your friend with darker waxes for sure! XOXO
Jen @ Girl in the Garage says
This is such a sweet little table! Good call with repainting over the turquoise paint- it looks perfect now with the soft colors and mould. xo

Oh Christy, I threw my back out this week too! One good thing is I had time to review your project 😍 I can almost hear this piece say “Aahhh, finally someone cared enough to transform me to my ultimate potential!” Love the molding…it makes the legs make “sense” because that oak just didn’t look right. Love the colors you chose too…and the peek-a-boo stripes? Wow! Made me gasp with joy! 🥰
Christy says
Oh no! We are two sad chick-a-dees with our backs lol. It does give us a chance to sit around guilt free though ha ha! Thank you so much, Mary, and I hope your back feels better quickly! XOXO

I have this same table. I use it as a lamp table in the living room. I had a small 3 drawer chest to go with it, match but different. I bought them at jc penney in the mid 80’s. Just a little background info. Love the final paint choices and the applique.
Christy says
Thank you so much, May, and I love the background information!! XOXO
