Hello sweet friends! I hope you don’t mind that I abandoned all things Christmas this week to share some thrifty makeovers! As I was looking through my past makeovers, I realized that I have one old Home Interiors shelf that I have found and made over three different times over the years.
I thought it would be fun to look back at how I redid each of them! I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Here is the shelf of the day a la Home Interiors:
Fancy, eh? Do remember this one from back in the day? It must have been popular since I’ve actually come across this shelf several times! (It was only priced low enough to actually buy three times.)
There must have been very few resources for home decor because those parties were a hit!
Home Interiors Shelf Makeover #1
The first shelf I redid back in 2017! I found it at the thrift store for $1.98.
To start this makeover, I measured and cut a piece of hardboard to fit the back. Then I took the shelf apart by removing a few screws.
I decided to use the Vaseline distressing technique on it.
For that, I spray painted the brackets with black spray paint and then added a little Vaseline to the areas where I wanted distressing to show:
Then I painted with white spray paint:
When they were dry, I wiped the areas with petroleum jelly with a soft cloth to remove the white paint…
Then I painted the rest of the shelf parts with Dixie Belle Chalk Paint in Fluff.
I cut a piece of hardboard as a backing and chose to add numbers using black acrylic craft paint and my Silhouette Cameo to fill in that big blank space:
The After
Swapping out the dated cup hooks for legit hooks made a huge difference in updating this shelf!
I love it as a mug holder…
But of course it could have so many uses!
The large numbers really add a fun touch!
Home Interiors Shelf Makeover #2
The next makeover was shared in 2019. I found it for a similar price at $2. This makeover was inspired by the first one. I love a black and white look, so I did something similar here.
Again, I took it apart and cut a piece of hardboard to fit the back. I knew I did not want the gold color on the brackets to show through when I distressed, so this time, I gave them a quick spray of Rustoleum’s Espresso.
Then everything got two coats of Dixie Belle’s Cotton:
If I were making this piece over today, I would use the cheat method of distressing which is SO much easier!!
You can see how I do that in this short video:
If you have any trouble viewing, you can see it on YouTube HERE.
Then I decided to add a stencil to this one, filling it in with my favorite black acrylic craft paint once again:
I sprayed Loctite spray adhesive to the back of the stencil to hold it firmly in place first, and then I used a small brush to paint in the stencil, brushing away from the edges as much as possible.
Then I went back with a liner brush and connected the breaks that give it away as a stencil.
After sanding lightly all over with 220 grit sandpaper, I sealed everything with Clear Coat in satin using the blue sponge applicator. Then I reassembled the shelf and added the new backing with small finishing nails.
The After
Much more updated!
I don’t use as much French-inspired lettering these days, but it always sells quickly in my booth.
Luckily, I found these shabbied up hooks as-is at Hobby Lobby:
They were just right for this piece!
Home Interiors Shelf Makeover #3:
And finally, the third shelf was also a thrift store find, but a bit more at $4.25. I shared this one in 2020.
I decided to go for a different look for this one, and cut a piece of bead board to fit the open space at the back this time:
Everything got a coat of Fluff, followed by a coat of Vintage Duck Egg Blue mixed 50/50 with Cotton to lighten it up a bit. (I did that so that when I sanded, white would show through giving it more of a coastal vibe.)
The hooks for this one came from this guy, another thrift store find:
After sanding everything smooth using 220 grit sandpaper wrapped around an old foam sanding sponge, I sealed with Dixie Belle’s Best Dang Wax in Clear…
The After
It’s hard to go wrong with this pretty blue!
And that’s one style of Home Interiors shelf made over three different ways!
Which was your favorite??
Looking through old makeovers has me excited to see what the new year will bring!!
I hope you all have a blessed holiday with loved ones, and I am looking forward to the same.

All beautiful makeovers but I’ve one question. How did you attach the new backing wood to the existing shelf?
Thanks

Thank you, Ei! I just used small finishing nails across the back of the shelf at the top and across the part where the hooks are to attach the backs. XOXO

They are all so nice, keep changing my favorite! but I think the one with the numbers I like best. I’m curious, what kind of hook or hangers do you use on the backs of your projects?

Thanks for all the inspiration Christy! You are the first blogger I have ever followed, and definitely my favorite! It started when I found your sweater pumpkins on Pinterest over a year ago (I ended up making a few out of a velvety leopard print). Love your creativity and vision. Keep up the amazing work! BTW, I like the shelf with the numbers, although I have a soft spot for bead board…hard to pick a favorite. Merry Christmas to you and your family. Barbara

My mother and I both have this shelf. Mom still has hers in the kitchen with a Seth Thomas clock sitting on it. Mine is in the closet. LOL, I’ve always liked it, so I kept it. I think I’ll paint it, change the hooks and put it in the bathroom. Thank you and love your ideas! Merry Christmas!

Leticia Beam says
Fantastic! I like all 3! is the first one for sale?
Christy says
Thank you, Leticia!! These are all makeovers from the past, so they all have since sold. Funny thing, I had the first one in my booth when we moved to our new house back in 2017. I needed something for a space in our new house and knew that shelf would be just the thing, so I ran up to my booth to get it and someone was walking around with it in their hands. They ended up buying it boo hoo… that’s one I would have liked to have kept. If only I was there 15 minutes sooner! Happy New Year! XOXO
