Hello amazing friends!! I’m here today with a gorgeous sofa table I found at the thrift store. It’s a fantastic piece to show how to apply black wax!
Before I get to that, today is also Furniture Fixer Upper Day which means I am being joined by four of my favorite blogger friends who are also sharing furniture makeovers of their own! Be sure to check out their projects at the bottom!
This table was originally marked $28, but I had a full punch card that earned me an additional 20% off, so it was only $22!
What a steal…check out those gorgeous details!
It doesn’t look like it in the before photos, but it actually appeared kind of yellow.
I loved the way the glaze the played up the details though, so I decided to do a similar finish using wax.
After giving the whole thing a good cleaning with White Lightning, I gave the table two coats of Sea Glass:
I painted my neighbor’s bedroom furniture in this lovely color earlier this year.
It took just over half of an 8oz jar of Sea Glass to paint this table with two coats:
Next, I gathered my both my black wax and my clear wax, a clean cloth, and my wax brush…
What I love about Dixie Belle’s wax is that it has hardly any smell to it, it is water-based, and it’s available in two sizes, 10 oz and a smaller, 4oz. It’s the perfect size if you don’t use wax often.
How to Apply Black Wax
I started by giving the whole table a coat of clear wax, applying with a wax brush, and using a soft cloth to buff it in:
I buffed it trying to go in the same direction as the brush strokes.
When using darker waxes, you want a base coat of clear wax first, or the dry paint will suck in too much color from the darker wax.
Next, I applied the black wax starting with the details on the legs. I used a wax brush to get it into all the details:
Then I used a clean cloth to remove the wax…
If you get too much dark wax in one area, you can apply a bit more clear to use like an eraser.
I didn’t want any of the previous color on this table to show through, so this is another way you can highlight those pretty details without sanding.
THe result
The result is way better than the yellowy color we started with!
This pretty coastal green is a perfect color to use with black wax!
Do you spy my girl in the background?
Always lounging nearby!
I love how the darker wax highlights the details:
My freinds are sharing makeovers of their own today as well!

Janice Holt says
Lovely color and the black wax looked so good. Glad you told us about using clear wax before dark wax because several years ago I tried to just wax with dark wax on paint and it was a mess and had to paint over it. Great job as usual.
Christy says
Thank you, Janice! Oh yes, I may have learned that lesson the hard way as well! XOXO
Robin says
The best advice…..clear wax before the dark wax and why this is done in this order!
Christy says
Oh yes! You can also use Clear Coat first, then the darker wax…just learned that a couple of months ago! 🙂

Christy says

That is stunning, Christy! I was a little unsure about the color, but you know better 😁 The black wax is beautiful with this green. The table had great lines before and now it looks even better. Someone is going to be so happy to have it!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Marcie! This is a sophisticated table and I agree that the Sea Glass might not have fit it on its own, but the wax totally makes it work! Have a great weekend! XOXO
LYN says
Really really pretty. Odd question….I’m wondering how many hours do you think you put into that piece? I have a table and chair that I want to paint. Kinda wondering how long it will take me.
Christy says
Thank you, Lyn! I did this piece in a couple of days, but of course I wasn’t working on it continuously. I would say maybe a total of three hours. XOXO
Rosie says
So fresh and pretty!
Beautifully done Christy. I really like the dark wax picking up on all the details.

Marie says
I’m finally catching up on this month’s furniture fixer upper projects – I miss you guys! Sea glass is one of my favorite Dixie Belle paint colors. It gave this sweet curvy sofa table such a pretty beach vibe. It looks really good in your family room, is it going to be a keeper?
Christy says
I miss you too, Marie!! Thank you! I do love this table so much, but the color is just a tad too green and it faces our island which is much more blue. It will be headed to the shop on my next trip! Take care, my friend! XOXO
Mary Stone says
In this pretty table, you didn’t apply any sealer. So…
1. When do you NOT apply sealer?
2. If only wax, how do you clean without removing wax?
Christy says
Hi Mary! Wax is a sealer. I always seal my furniture pieces, and I use either wax, Clear Coat, or Gator Hide for that. The wax will be buffed into the surface and will completely cure in about 21 days and offer great protection, but you can start cleaning it right away. I just use regular old Pledge on waxed pieces. You can even use a bit of Pledge on a cloth to buff out marks that you may get on a waxed surface. I hope this helps! XOXO
