Hello sweet Friends! I have a quick thrifty makeover for y’all today! Actually I have three.
For the first time in months I decided to treat myself to a morning of yard saling on Saturday.
Here is what I found:
Okay…I also hit up the thrift store! I think I found some fun stuff. That blue case in the front is an old hairdryer…I just wanted it for the case, but I thought that was a cool find. The table was only $20 and the mirror was only $5!
Today I’m sharing what I did with these three baskets:
I paid $12 for all three. The bottom two are picnic baskets, but I’m not exactly sure what the smaller one on top was intended to be used for. I just love baskets, especially when they have lids so they can hide all kinds of things!
All it took was a couple of cans of spray paint to unify this trio:
My favorite update?
Adding these old wheels from my stash to the bottom of the large flat one! I don’t recall what they came off of and they weren’t the prettiest wheels, but I decided to save them anyway. They gave this little basket a fun detail. I just stuck them through the bottom.
I gave the little basket on top a pull that came from an old dresser…
I spray painted it with spray primer and roughed it up a bit. It just adds a little unexpected detail…
Again, I just poked it through the weave in the basket.
I painted the white baskets with Rustoleum spray primer, and the blue basket is Rustoleum Robin’s Egg Blue:
These are going in my living room, I just haven’t decided exactly where yet. I’m going to store my magazines that I just can’t seem to part with, in them.
That bottom one was only $2 at the thrift store.
I found it after finding the others and thought it would be great for stacking.
It might be my favorite.
I just love paint!
My living room is really coming together. I decided on curtains, and on Thursday I’ll be sharing how I updated my living room coffee table for the second time to work better in our new space!
It looked like this when I bought it four years ago:
You can see what it looked like after its first makeover HERE in a post I shared on decorating my home with thrifty finds!
It looks much different now! I’ll be sharing that with my Furniture Fixer Upper Girls, so they’ll have makeovers of their own to share also!
UPDATE: See how this table looks now HERE!
See y’all then! 🙂
XOXO,
Don’t Miss a Thing!
If you like what you see, there are several ways to follow along!

What great buys! I love what you’ve done with them. Adding wheels to the large one was a brilliant idea. I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one that has magazines that I can let go of. Lol.
Christy says
Thank you, Linda! I was so tickled to come across those wheels in my stash…glad I kept them! And yes, love my magazines as well. I love curling up on the sofa with one; it’s such a simple pleasure! XOXO

Oh my! Adding the wheels is just genius! The big basket is my favorite too! Love when I find a great piece for a couple of dollars! Those are going to be wonderful storage pieces (I have magazines I can’t part with either heh). Can’t wait to see the living room. ????
Cecilia
Christy says
Thanks, Cecilia! I was so glad I held on to those old wheels! And yep…magazines are one of my guilty pleasures! XOXO
Donna says
Cute makeover! I have the same basket as the smaller one. Baskets are great for stashing things and adding some texture. I’m going to have to start a board for thrifty makeovers and pin all your goodies. xoxo
Christy says
Thanks, Donna! I almost didn’t paint that smaller one because I didn’t mind it as it was, but I do like how the three work together. Pin away ha ha! XOXO
Marie says
Wow, those baskets are looking mighty fine now! So fresh and pretty, looking forward to seeing how you display them in your living room. Pinned
Christy says
Thanks, Marie! It’s the simplest makeovers sometimes that I enjoy the results form the most. I’m looking forward to finding them a home in the living room! 🙂 XO
Marcie Lovett says
So charming, Christy! At first I wondered why the wood basket took the paint so differently from the wicker. Then I realized it was a completely different color. What a great idea! I also love the casters, so you can move the little tower around. Nice job!
Christy says
Thank you, Marcie! This will be a fun addition to the living room. 🙂 XO
Susan W. says
Beautiful make over! I have a stash of baskets in my basement that I am definitely going to paint. I love your color choices and embellishments. Thanks for sharing!
Christy says
Thanks, Susan! Sounds like you have some free décor in the works! XO
Robyn Wright says
LOVE!
Christy says
Thanks, Robyn! 🙂
MaryJean says
I love what you did with the baskets! I’m going to show my DIL because i gave her one of my picnic baskets and I bet she would love the idea of painting it to use in their new (well, new to them) house.
I think the small basket is for wine bottles and cheese and crackers. It makes me think that it would be strapped to the back of a bicycle riding around the countryside in France or Italy. Just a thought, I don’t know for sure. 🙂
Christy says
Thank you, MaryJean! I see picnic baskets all the time and it never occurred to me to buy any of them until I saw two of them together at a yard sale this weekend. They are so practical for storing so many things. That little one would be perfect for a lakeside wine and cheese date! XOXO
Debbie in TX says
Loving those baskets. The texture is fantastic. I like how they stack so well together for a gorgeous storage piece. Love love love it!
Christy says
Than you, Debbie! I was so excited to find that flat one on the bottom at the end of my hunt to make this set! XOXO
Rose Lefebvre says
Love the colors you painted them!
Christy says
Thank you, Rose! My favorites! 🙂
Gail says
I had a basket similar to the smaller top basket, except the top was two pcs that came together. I was told it was a cat carrier…which I used for an arrangement of dried flowers.
Christy says
I could see that being used as a cat carrier, and it is the perfect size for an arrangement…great idea! XO
Cindy Griffis says
I believe the top basket may have been a tea chest.
Christy says
That would make sense due to its petite size! 🙂
Vivian says
Oh my goodness….I love them too!! What a great job you did on these…would be just perfect in my TV room!! 🙂
Christy says
Thank you, Vivian! I think they’ll be a fun addition to our TV room! 🙂
Norma says
Just simply amazing I need to go find some baskets Thank you for sharing your finds and redos God bless
Christy says
Thank you, Norma! I want to go find a couple more now ha ha! XO
Anita Ellison says
The basket trio is lovely! I never get tired of looking at what you have been doing!
Christy says
Aww thank you, Anita!! I appreciate that! XOXO
Jan says
I have three nesting sizes of the bottom basket, and a couple of the top style as well. The top one (at least one of the pair I have) was outfitted as a picnic basket with red checked lining all ready to fill with sandwiches. I got those at a yard sale. The bottom trio, I bought new many many years ago. Sometimes they have been tucked away. Other times they are on display hiding something in plain sight.
Great job!
Oh, and I had a hair dryer like that in college. Very handy in the days before blow dryers.
Jan
Christy says
I can understand why you have kept yours for so long…they are just so handy! That top one is the perfect size for a few sandwiches for sure. I was so intrigued with the hair dryer and I just loved the case it came in! XO
Kate Lehman says
Hi Christy, I know you have shared so many transformed magic bits and pieces BUT those baskets? they are really really something! I opened your email and straight away went and wrote on my shopping ‘spray paint’. I have 2 out of 3 of those baskets exactly the same. Thank you so much. I will search for the 3rd.
As the young girls would say ‘I’m a bit jelly’ that you have moved house and I am still waiting to sell mine BUT wowee what a house and that bathroom? …. so much magic in your touch. I just love getting the next ‘what you have done with….’ email – the next episode of magic. best regards Kate Lehman [ Tasmanian Kate]
Christy says
Aww you are the best, Kate, thank you!! You make me love what I do! Yes girl, go and get yourself some spray paint stat! And don’t worry…our old house is still on the market so we are nuts caring for two houses at the moment! XOXO
Kay says
I am a new follower ……Loved everything
Christy says
Thank you, Kay, and welcome!! I’m thrilled to have you following along with me! 🙂
At Rivercrest Cottage says
Wow. Wow. Wow! You have me rethinking baskets. Love the look you created.
Christy says
Thank you so much! I had a lot of fun with these! XO
Julie Briones says
These are GREAT, Christy! I love that they do double duty… GREAT for storage. Wish My Wee Abode had enough room to accommodate something like this… the storage would be a great addition. The colors and details are just right, too! Is the bottom one large enough to store a blanket or two?
Christy says
Thanks, Julie! Sometimes the simplest of projects are the most fun! Yes, these are great for storage. The bottom one is a great size to hold a couple of blankets! XOXO
Holly says
Another great makeover Christy – love it! I have the top basket and when I bought it I was told it was for fishing tackle – so funny – I see other people who have the same one say it was for various other uses. I think it was probably a picnic basket – I use mine for stowing crafts in and thanks to your idea I am now going to paint it for when (if ever!) I get going on a sewing/craft room 🙂 Thanks!
Christy says
Thank you, Holly! I guess that basket really can be used for so many things! It’s fun to hear the different uses people have for it, and that’s part of the fun of finding older pieces to love again! 🙂
Danielle says
I think it’s rather ironic that you I read this the day after I’m out thrift store shopping and find a basket to paint to match my bathroom decor. I bought this tiny basket for the back of my toilet that is rectangle with handles and I plan to paint it lavender and then put decorative soaps in it. I paid 65 cents for it. My bathroom is in different shades of purples and lavender and white. So, I’m sticking to those colors when I add decorative items.
Christy says
Oh funny! 🙂
Animeyt says
How nice! Thank you
Marilyn says
Those baskets look so fresh, Christy! I have a picnic basket very similar to the middle one. Any tips for painting the undersides of those handles? Spray paint has never been kind to me, probably because I’m impatient by nature. 😮
Christy says
Yes, paint sure did wonders for these baskets! For the handles, I don’t have any secrets for the handles…they stay put when I put them up so I inverted the can sprayed the underside. 🙂
Teresa says
I have the same small basket as you have on the top. I got it when my grandmother passed and she had been using it for a sewing basket. You made it look good just like all of your other awesome projects. You are, by far, my favorite blogger. I just love what you do!
Christy says
Aww you just made my whole day, thank you!! I think its original purpose was probably just that…a sewing basket. How awesome that you have that to remember your grandmother by. XOXO
