Hello sweet friends!! Thank you for all the well wishes for my sore back! I am not good at sitting around doing nothing that is for sure! I’m finally on the mend and hope to be back to creating this weekend!
Today is Furniture Fixer Upper today, and I’m pulling out an oldie to share with you! Be sure to scroll to the bottom to see what my friends are sharing today as well!
This is the piece I chose for today:
Do y’all remember this one? I originally shared this one over two years ago. It doesn’t seem like it was that long ago!
Problem Child
I had major issues with this table.
At the time, I chose to use DIY chalk paint and I had painted the entire piece with one coat that I mixed up using a flat black paint my Hubby had picked up for another project. I decided it wasn’t quite black enough, so I followed up with a coat of another brand of paint I had on hand at the time.
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Everything seemed fine until I added letters I had cut with my Silhouette:
In that picture above I was spacing everything out how I wanted, and then I went back and added the negative parts to create a “stencil”:
Everything still looked good at this point. Then I painted in the “stencil” with two coats of paint, but when I went to remove the contact paper I had used, the black paint beneath was peeling away with just about every piece I removed…
I had never had this happen before. The top surface must have had some sort of wax or oil applied to it that was not allowing the paint to adhere properly because the legs and underside were just fine.
Fixing the problem
I ended up having to sand the top down to the wood with my orbital sander:
I painted it again giving it two coats of paint and it did better that time. Nowadays, I would have reached for my beloved Dixie Belle in Caviar! I’ve never had that happen with Dixie Belle.
Change of plans
I decided to go in a different direction with the graphic on the second go and cut this one out with my Silhouette instead:
I filled it in with two coats of paint and removed the “stencil” right away.
Finally, success!
A light sanding here and there with 220 grit sandpaper and a good coat of clear wax, and this table was finally complete! ( Now I would use Satin Clear Coat with a little black mixed in to seal like I did HERE.)
Ooh la la…so much better!
The company I usually purchase stencils from no longer has their own website, but I just found them on Etsy, and you can find this stencil in their shop HERE.
I’m not sure how the original graphic I created for this piece would have turned out, but it seemed a bit too bold and industrial in the end anyway.
This pretty French graphic was so much more fitting for these pretty curves!
This table was a beauty and at only $35, I snatched it right up, but it was a bit beaten up in places in its before state:
I decided a simple, elegant black makeover was just what it needed. The black paint camouflaged all those boo boo areas perfectly.
I love a good white makeover any day of the week, but it is ALWAYS more work, especially with these antique pieces.
Painting this piece black meant that I didn’t have to contend with potential bleed-through which at the time was such a pain. That is no longer an issue thanks to BOSS!
The gate legs swing out to support the leaves on either side…
This was such a pretty accent piece that I was almost sad I didn’t paint it in a color that would work with my own decor!
Don’t forget to check out what my friends have in store for you today!
Here’s another small drop leaf table that I gave some love to that you might enjoy too:

I remember that table – just love it in black (even tho’ I also love everything in white!!) 😀 Hope your back is better for you to get back to work.
Christy says
Thank you, Petra! I’m the same… as you know, white all the way, but I do enjoy a black piece too! My back is feeling much better, thank you! XOXO
Christina says
Christy, I am SO glad you are on the mend! I was a bit (okay, a LOT) distracted by my cat Fairy not feeling well for several days. She’s 100% better today and may you be as well … very quickly!!!
This table is a total winner! Love the black with white.
Sending you tons of healthy energy. Have a great rest of the week and weekend.
xo
Christy says
Oh I’m so glad your sweet kitty is better too. It’s so hard when pets are sick because they can’t tell you how they’re feeling. Thank you, my friend!! XOXO
Janice Holt says
Glad to here you are on the mend. Just don’t overdo it. I’m sure it’s hard for you to relax and do nothing (I’m the same way) but sometimes we just have to. Always enjoy looking at your posts even if they are old or not so old.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Janice! I’m going to try to pace myself for sure. Glad you enjoyed this look back! Enjoy your weekend! XOXO
susan says
Can’t wait to see all the projects you come up with for the transfers! Hoping you’re feeling better!
Christy says
Me too!! I am on the mend! Thank you, Susan! XOXO
Carol says
That drop leaf table turned out FABULOUS! My favorite of your makeovers!!! I am officially inspired .
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Carol!! XOXO
Cecilia from Georgia says
I am glad to see you are feeling better but don’t overdo! I see these cute tables a lot but very pricey; you did great finding this one. Showing how you sometimes mess up and recover so nicely helps us to avoid making the same mistakes. I am so paranoid about paint not sticking (even DB), that I do a test spot and let it dry a few days then if it doesn’t come off with a fingernail, I’m good to go. It takes more time but worth it. Love the black and French stencil!
Christy says
Thank you, Cecilia! It never hurts to be too cautious lol! XOXO
Sue Mellette says
Love this makeover. Using black as the base with the white stencil is like a little black dress and pearls! You can never go wrong with this choice. Next to blue and white, my next favorite mix is black and white. Charming table and I am sure it will sell quickly! Thanks for sharing and the inspiration. Have a great weekend.
Christy says
Thanks, Sue! I love that analogy! Enjoy your weekend too! XOXO
Denise - Salvaged Inspirations says

Thank you, my friend! I’m definitely not good at taking it easy lol! XOXO

Diane Mandt says
I’m absolutely in love with the sweet drop leaf table! I had an opportunity to purchase one, but, silly me, passed on it.
Thank you for sharing your delightful changes to those lovely old pieces.
Blessing and healing,
diane
Christy says
Thank you so much, Diane! I do that often… then regret not going for it lol! There’s always another piece that comes along though! XOXO
Sharon L Austin says
I love it this way. I love that contact paper you used for the stencil. Do a project in the future using that!
Christy says
Thank you, Sharon! The contact paper really makes it easy! XOXO
Cate Cooper says
Usually I really dislike black, but I have to say that your table is lovely! You’re changing my mind about black–just a little. 🙂
Good on you!! Great news that you’re on the mend. I’ve had lots of back pain and ice packs became my close friends.
Christy says
Oh good! Thank you! I don’t have any black pieces in my own home, but they always look so elegant in black! I went for the heating pad…I never even thought to ice it. I’ll try that next time! XOXO
Lizzy says
I love the black and it’s finish. Beautiful!
Christy says
Thanks so much, Lizzy! Have a great weekend! XOXO
Marian says
Christy, I hope you are on the mend. I absolutely love the way this little table turned out. I am just sad that your store is so far away. I have the perfect place for the table. You always know just what to do to bring new life to each piece you choose. Thank you for all of your hard work.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Marian! I appreciate that! And I am definitely better than I was! I’m so glad you enjoyed this one! XOXO
Denise Cox says
While I’ve become a ” white” decor convert in the past couple of years (ahh, but coastal’s still my favorite), this is a LOVELY table!! And that stencil is perfect for it. The way you spaced it is perfect for the shape of the table and I love the femininity of the script!!!! 😊
Christy says
Thank you, Denise! I usually stick with whites in my own decor too, but there is just something so classic and sophisticated about a pretty black piece! XOXO
Artistic Stencils says
Such a beautiful makeover Christie. Thank you for the link to my etsy shop. Truly appreciated.
Christy says
Thank you! I’ve linked to your site many times over the last several years, and I have purchased numerous stencils. I was so sad when I was no longer able to reach your site. I decided to search this stencil (I have bought this one from you in the past) and there you were on Etsy! I need to redirect my links to your Etsy shop! Love your stencils! XOXO
Addie says
You know I LOVE that black!!!! Always love a black accent piece!!!!
Have a good weekend!!!
Christy says
Thank you, Addie! Like a little black dress!! Enjoy your weekend too, my friend! XOXO
Michele M. says
I absolutely love love LOVE this table! I have all sorts of black in our home.
(Everyone should have a touch of black in their homes.)
This is the coolest table for those short on space. I could use one of those for my sister’s condo – her table is way too big and I have been trying to suggest one such as this for those rare times when a full table is needed, which is truly next to never.
Well done – hope to see more black painted stuff, Christy. I always veer towards black or ivory statement pieces.
Christy says
Thanks so much, Michele! This is perfect for a small space! I always love the elegance black brings to a piece! XOXO
Jen @ Girl in the Garage says
Christy, I’m not sure if I remember this project but it turned out so pretty! BOO for all the problems you started with! Happy you’re starting to feel better now, my friend. XO
Christy says
Thank you, Jen! I was so frustrated, but it worked out even better in the end, so it’s all good! And yes, I am not good at all at being down…glad to be able to move around again! XOXO
Dixie Lee says
I laughed at that stencil cut out of the dollar store contact paper. I covered a whole bunch of stuff in that a long time ago: my desk, clipboard, pencil sharpener, etc. The desk is now my DH’s tool storage….
I’ve painted a lot of pieces in Napoleonic Blue, combined with gold rub n buff, or blue and white porcelain knobs.
Christy says
Ha ha that paper is actually terrible for making stencils because it is so busy, you can’t see where to paint, but I was determined not to waste it. That tells you how thrifty (cheap) I am lol! The blue and gold combo sounds beautiful!! XOXO
Janice Laswick says
On the black drop leaf table, did you stencil both drop leaves?
Christy says
Hi Janice! I only stenciled the front side as I figured it would likely sit against a wall unopened. XOXO
