Are y’all ready to see how my sister’s kitchen turned out?? Sorry I had to make you wait, but the anticipation makes it more exciting, right? She has a kitchen full of pine cabinets that I shared a detailed How to Paint Pine Cabinets tutorial for on Tuesday. There were way too many pictures to fit all the befores, afters, and in-betweens in one post, so today I’m back to share all the pretty after pictures!
First, here is a reminder of how her kitchen, straight out of 1985, looked when we started:
See all those knotholes? I shared how we dealt with those before painting in my tutorial on Tuesday if you missed it.
And here is how her kitchen looks now! You might want to grab your sunglasses because it is so bright!
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products we used.
Can I get an amen??
In the before photos, you can see that the piece above the sink was curvy. My sister didn’t like that, so I whacked it out with a sledgehammer and replaced it with a straight piece, securing it with my nail gun.
I also replaced a similar curvy piece that was above this opening on the opposite wall next to the fridge:
Do you miss the pine at all??
This makeover may look very familiar if you’ve seen my own kitchen makeover.
My sister loved mine, so she decided to use many of the same elements in her own. I also have this gorgeous mother-of-pearl backsplash:
I love how it shimmers when the light hits it.
You can see how I installed it in my own home HERE. Hers was actually easier because I was able to attach it directly to the wall. I trimmed out the edges with ceramic pencil trim I found at the Home Depot:
She also used my wall color, Campfire Ash by Behr:
I love that clock! It came from Hobby Lobby. (Clocks are 50% off every other week!)
And notice the fridge is clutter-free! She actually tried not to clutter it back up completely!
That stairwell leads to the room over the garage. She removed the carpet from the stairs and is currently painting the railing. The floor is still a project on the list. She has plans to replace it with hardwood or luxury vinyl. That will also add a lot of warmth and contrast to this space.
She was really lucky to have solid surface counters and stainless steel appliances already.
I suggested black for her kitchen island, but she had found an inspiration photo that featured a taupe island that she liked, so she chose Smokestack by Behr.
My sister painted the stools with the same paint she used on the cabinets, Behr Ultra Pure White in a satin finish. There was no need to use the stinky shellac primer on those or the island, just regular primer was fine.
And you can see the top of the island is no longer this ugly wood.
We used Dixie Belle White Magic VooDoo Gel Stain on it. I’ll share more of how we did that when I share the kitchen table and chairs on Tuesday.
My sister loved my faucet as well, so she replaced hers with the same one I found on Amazon HERE.
It is awesome!
She opted to keep her existing hinges but replaced all the hardware.
We used a mix of knobs on top and on the drawers and longer pulls on the bottom cabinets, all purchased at the Home Depot…
Replacing the floors with wood or luxury vinyl eventually is why she opted to stay a bit lighter on the island, although it actually looks a lot lighter than it is in this photo. It will look SO good when the floors are done!
Why not use chalk paint?
That’s the question I often get about my own kitchen. Ya’ll know I am a huge fan of chalk paint for furniture and decor items, especially because I like a bit of a distressed look. It seems painting a whole kitchen would be so much easier with the “no-prep” idea behind chalk paint. However, I chose the latex enamel in the Satin finish for a couple of reasons. First, I prefer a clean new-looking finish for cabinets and second, latex enamel is super easy to clean which is very important in a kitchen. The prep needed is well worth the end result, and there is no need to wax or seal the paint after, as would be needed with chalk paint. That makes touch-ups super easy.
One more before:
In progress:
And after!
And how does my sister like her new kitchen?
I think this smile says it all!
She actually told me last week, “Thank you. Thank you for helping me love my house!”
That is the best thanks ever!
I hope you enjoyed the big reveal!! I’ve completed two more kitchen makeovers HERE and HERE if you want even more kitchen inspiration!
I’ll be back on Tuesday with my Trash-to-Treasure girls sharing what we did with her kitchen set!
That might be my favorite…I can’t wait!!
UPDATE!! See how my sister’s updated eat-in area looks now HERE…you won’t recognize it! 🙂
XOXO,

So great that you both help each other with projects. The kitchen looks so beautiful now! Hard to believe it is the same dark pine cabinets. I’d like to see more updates on her house as she gets other projects done.
Christy says
Thank you, Jody! It is nice to have someone to share the workload with for sure! They have a few other things that need attention that I might just share! XOXO
Petra says
YES! Amazing! I think the island would’ve been fine in black or taupe – and I’m loving the little black accents here and there 🙂 . It’s like a new kitchen. Again, white paint comes to the rescue 😀 . Looking forward to more befores and afters!
Christy says
Thank you, Petra!! It really is like a brand new kitchen, but without the $$$! XOXO

Christine says
Wow, spectacular! Does she love it?
Christy says
Thanks, Christine! She does love it! XOXO
Christine says
Meant to ask why you couldn’t stitch yours directly to the wall? I don’t remember that in your makeover?
Christy says
We removed the 4″ granite backsplash that was at the back of the counter all the way around so we could take the tile right to the counter, but there ended up being a gap between the counter and the wall. We ended up having to add cement board to the wall to pull it out a bit and hide that gap. 🙂
Tracy says
That is incredible! What a difference. You are a good sister 🙂
Christy says
Thank you, Tracy! I really am ha ha! But she is too! XOXO

Now that’s a whole new kitchen. Love it and am sure she does also. What we won’t do for our sisters, right. They are the best. Love it.
Christy says
Right?? It does look brand new! Thank you, Janice! And yes, sisters are the best!! XOXO
Mary says
I am in *love* with that back splash! What a lovely kitchen overall. I had to double check that the counter surface was the same. In the before pic, it looked ugh, but in the after, it fit right in! The kitchen looks so much brighter and cleaner overall. Great job.
Isn’t it amazing how changing a few things changes everything? I had ugly black counter tops in my kitchen that I HATED…until I added a white tile back splash with grey grout. Suddenly they changed the entire look of the counter tops, which now fit with the look.
Christy says
Thank you, Mary!! The same thing happened with our guest bath. The counters were ugly, but after we painted the cabinets, they looked great! XOXO
Moriah says
Amazing!!! Tons of hard work but GREAT job! ❤️
Christy says

Wanda Rose says
Gorgeous make over!
Christy says
Thank you, Wanda! XOXO
JulieM says
Beautiful transformation of your sister’s kitchen. You have motivated me to do mine! Is there a reason why you did not use your paint sprayer for the cabinets?
Christy says
Thank you, Julie! I love that you are feeling motivated to do your own! As for the sprayer, I am just used to doing it old-school with a brush and roller. 🙂 XOXO
Karen says
You mentioned in your description that your sister was lucky to have the solid counter tops and stainless steel appliances…..Well, I’d add she is lucky to have a wonderful, talented, loving and giving sister like YOU! What a fun project for sisters to tackle. The “new” kitchen is spectacular! I would never leave the kitchen!!!
Christy says
Aww you are so sweet, Karen, thank you! It was really fun to tackle together! XOXO
Phyllis says
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I believe your sister chose well. This kitchen is now so bright and cheerful. Well done. You guys did a tremendous job. A brand new kitchen – paint and lots of elbow grease. It looks perfect!
Christy says
Thank you, Phyllis! It really is so light and bright now and even looks and feels bigger! XOXO
Maureen Provost Ryan says
Wow!!! One of the most dramatic kitchen re-dos ever!!! Your sister is one lucky gal and the value of her house just improved dramatically, too. So many people want a white kitchen and this is why!!!!
Christy says
Thank you, Maureen! Yes, I just love a white kitchen too…and so will buyers if she ever decides to sell! It really does brighten it up so much! XOXO
Cathy Klose says
Looks awesome! We’re doing our kitchen over in a few weeks and it WILL BE white! Thank you for solidifying my choice for white.
Christy says
Thank you, Cathy! I love a white kitchen! Good luck with yours! XOXO
Denise Cox says
Hell yeah…. Lol!!! I’ll give ya BUNCHES of “Amens”! Christy, it’s absolutely lovely!!!! When I first saw it, my jaw dropped. Talk about a transformation!! It’s amazing how a neural palette opens up a room. I love it! I bet it’s so pretty and uplifting when the sun peeps through the window…? 🌞🤔.
BTW… Are the both of you twins?? If not, she looks soooo much like you. Also, is Dixie Belle appropriate for other materials than wood? I was thinking of painting a black resin planter and then distressing it. I’d like a color that is a softer white. This is for indoors. Thanks…
Christy says
Ha ha thank you, Denise!! This space is flooded with light in the mornings and now it is even brighter! We are not twins lol, but my sister was born the day after me, four years later. She was born in Australia, but ahd we been in the US at the time, she would have been born on my birthday! Dixie Belle works on just about any surface and will work on your planters as well, maybe Drop cloth? That is an ivory color. 🙂 XOXO
Kim says
Absolutely stunning! I want to be you when I grow up. The backsplash is dazzling and I love the color of the island. Looking at my calendar now to see when I can do this in my own home!
Christy says
Aww thank you, Kim!! I love that you are feeling inspired!! XOXO

Cindy Hathaway says
Absolutely gorgeous!!!!!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Cindy! XOXO
Mari says
This kitchen looks wonderful!!! Thanks for the review of the chalk versus latex enamel. I painted kitchen cabinets years ago In enamel and they were so easy to clean and lasted until we enlarged and rearranged everything.
Christy says
Thank you, Mari! Yes, I do LOVE chalk paint, but enamel is much more practical in a kitchen! XOXO
Denise says
Wow, it looks amazing – I love how it turned out!
Christy says
Thank you, Denise! XOXO
Cecilia says
Amazing. It never fails to amaze me the difference paint can make on perfectly good but dated cabinets. And the backsplash is gorgeous and ties it all together. It turned out beautifully and I bet your sister is in heaven every time she walks in. Love it!
Christy says
Thank you, Cecilia! My sister was ready to replace these cabinets, but I’m so glad she gave paint a chance! The cabinets are so pretty painted! She really loves it now! XOXO
Sheryl Danner says
The finished job is stunning! As always you have outdone yourself. The backsplash really packs a gorgeous punch. If you are not yet familiar with it, you may want to check out Heirloom Traditions paint. I’ve been painting all my life, and have never found another paint to compare with HT. Other than cleaning there is no prep like with chalk paint, no brush marks, self leveling, no wax, it is awesome. Just thought you might like to check it out.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Sheryl! The tile is the icing on the cake for sure! I’ll have to check out that paint, thanks! XOXO
JoAnn Duncan says
You did a wonderful job and what a nice thing for your sister. She will never forget that.
JoAnn
Christy says
Thank you, JoAnn! It was fun working together on this project. She has helped me on several projects too! XOXO
sharon austin says
That looks AMAZING; the difference is just mind blowing. I can’t believe you managed to turn those pine cabinets into something so new and pretty!!! Yes, you can get an AMEN!!
Christy says
Thanks so much, Sharon! We are so thrilled with the results!! XOXO
Terry Moore says
So much brighter, and better now that the cabinets are painted. The only thing I would have done since you were doing all that work is take off that 4″ piece of backsplash that matches the counters and tiled all the way down so it doesn’t break the eye. I did that to mine when I tiled the back. I am sure you both are glad this huge project is done and she is enjoying her beautiful space.
Christy says
Thank you, Terry! I did that in my own kitchen redo, but she didn’t want to. Yes we are so happy this is done!! XOXO
Carolyn Price says
So amazing … a brand NEW kitchen!! Loved your sister’s comment about helping her love her house. ❤️
No surprise, Christy! You’re a miracle worker!
Christy says
Aww thank you, Carolyn! I am so happy that she is so happy! XOXO
kira sayler says
You did it again. bravo!!!!
Christy says
Thank you, Kira!! XOXO
Karen Thompson says
Absolutely beautiful! I love that backsplash and hope I get brave enough to do it in my guest bath some day, I think doing the grout is what scares me the most! And oh how I wish I lived closer to my sister so we could have as much fun as you two do! Only thing I would have done different is to have pulled that built in ?radio? out! 🙂 I just love all your projects, you do gorgeous work!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Karen! Grouting isn’t too bad at all! That is an intercom and I did try to get rid of it, but they actually use it lol. Maybe we should have painted that too! XOXO
Gail says
Looks beautiful, We have done several kitchen renos and painted woodwork white. -SO classic (and you can see the dirt which is a good thing so you can wipe it off! (*I had very dark cabinets once and some girls went wild in the kitchen…..Several months later, I was still finding Chocolate frosting splattered on cabinets simply because i couldn’t see it,). Only change I would have made here (If it were possible) would have been to fill in the holes and used the type hinges that are concealed. So glad you included the island table trim, too.
Christy says
Thank you, Gail! Yes!! I agree that I too like to be able to see that it’s dirty, so I can clean it! Funny/not funny about the frosting lol. We never considered replacing the hinges, but that would have been a great idea! XOXO
Cynthia says
Stunning!!
So much hard work, but so worth the effort. Your sister is so cute.
Christy says
Thank you, Cynthia! So worth it indeed! She is a cutie! XOXO
Kellie says

Christy says
Thank you so much, Kellie! I wish I would have had help with mine as well! XOXO
gwen says
Well Christy, it looks like you really outdid yourself for/with your sister! The kitchen looks fabulous! There is nothing I don’t like about this makeover! The backsplash looks great with her countertop and the floor! I had wondered about the stair railing, so I’m glad to know she’s in the process of painting it. And I like the gel stain on the island wood. I’ll have to research how the gel stain differs from pickelling for my ‘lovely’ pine walls.
(Is that an intercom system she’s got?)
Christy says
Thank you, Gwen! The white stain looks just like pickling! I’ve never pickled wood before so I don’t know the process, but it can’t be too different I would imagine! And ha ha…yes that is an intercom system. I tried to get rid of it lol! XOXO
Virginia says
So beautiful! A lot of hard work, but what a great reward!!

Wow Christy! You’re the best sister ever! I had to keep going back to the before pics because I thought she got new appliances. The stainless really pops. Beautiful!!

I REALLY enjoy your blog. You are so creative with paint. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Christy says

Becky says
Wow, that is every bit as stunning as I expected and then some!!! That is an absolutely gorgeous kitchen now!!!
Christy says
Aww thank you, Becky!! We are definitely thrilled with it! XOXO
Janina says
AMEN, sistah! It’s like having a completely new kitchen! I would have gone with the black island too – it would really give depth to the light kitchen, but it sure looks good as it is! Well done, sisters!
Christy says
Thank you, Janina! I liked the idea of a black island too, but I’m still super happy with it! XOXO
Vicki Bauerle says

Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Mary!! We are thrilled with the outcome!! XOXO
Jackie C says
Sqeeeeee! I am so envious of that gorgeous kitchen! Like straight out of a magazine! I fell in love with that backsplash when you did yours.
You guys did so good!! Congrats to sister on her drool worthy kitchen!
I’m excited for your post on the table & island. I’m super curious about how well DB gel stain would cover & last on my awful contractor grade, golden oak cabinets, (translation: ugly orange).
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Jackie!! She absolutely loves her kitchen now! I can’t wait for you to see the rest!! Your cabinets would probably need to be sanded down in order to go lighter, but I haven’t yet played with adding it so something over the top of existing stain. I need to try that! XOXO
Sharon says
Chrissy, one big “WOW”! You ladies did an awesome job! It’s a beautiful transformation… well done!
Christy says

What a beautiful kitchen transformation. You girls did an awesome job. Do you hire out? I’m still wanting to redo my kitchen. ❤️❤️❤️
Christy says
Thank you, Ange!! My Mom was saying how she’d like to have her cabinets painted now. I told her it was like childbirth. We need to forget how hard it was before we attempt it again lol! XOXO
Addie says
AMEN!!!! YES!!! You get a BIG AMEN on that redo!!!! Good-bye 1985!!!!!
It is really grand. I am always amazed how you dive in and get it all done so fast. Truly an inspiration!!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!!! I love the whole sister thing helping each other out….my sister is always at my throat!!!!! (bossy).
It’s really great that you shared the same tiles and paint colors and yet they really do look like two different kitchens.
….okay. …Sister, let’s keep that refridge cleaned off!!! It can make a clean kitchen look messy/unkept. XXOO
Christy says
Haha thank you, Addie!! My sister is usually bossy too lol, but this project was great because she knew I was the experienced one and took orders like a champ! It really was funny working together though! And yes… let’s hope she can keep that fridge clutter down. So far, so good! XOXO

Thank you, Nancy!! You know it…paint it magic for sure!! I knew her kitchen would look great, but it really wowed me anyway! I love your backsplash too!! XOXO
liz says
This is one of the best before & afters I have seen- simply amazing. My sister has almost the exact same pine kitchen cabinets (even the wavy trim piece) which I have wanted to paint for several years. I managed to do her dining, entry and family room over, and after I send her your post I know she will finally let me do the kitchen once she sees the dramatic and beautiful change.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Liz! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Yes, show your sister this makeover!! XOXO
Cheryl Atkinson says
Christy, you did an awesome thing for your sister. Loving your house is important for a stress free home. There is nothing better than loving your home. I sold my home and me and my dog Gracie are about to move into an apartment. I am kind of looking forward to not having to take care of everything (yard, plumbing and other issues) and i look forward to making it my cozy little home. You are welcome to come help me decorate. 🙂 Everything looks great you two.
Christy says
Thanks, Cheryl!! It will be fun to decorate your new space and make it your own! I’d go crazy if someone gave me free reign to decorate haha! XOXO
REBECCA PLATT says
I love how you used what was there and made it work, not spending thousands in the process. It’s a great recycling project. Love the backsplash.
Christy says
Thank you, Rebecca! I’m so glad everything was able to be reused as well! XOXO

Well, everyone has used the adjectives amazing, spectacular, fabulous, gorgeous, & absolutely beautiful. So, let me add: STUPENDOUS!!! You have yanked me out of my procrastination funk and I will finish up my ‘small’ projects. You look like a set of twins. (Psst….my brother was born the day after me…four years later…too.)
Christy says
Aww thank you, Robin!! Yes, finish up your smalls…you will feel so accomplished and then you can find new projects! Funny coincidence about your brother! 🙂 XOXO
Mary Loveland says
Wow, it just about makes me cry it’s so pretty! You and your sister will remember this forever. Great job you two!

Anod Nostaw says
WOW! WOW! WOW! Kitchen is in the 21st century. You both did a most fantastic job.
There is only one thing I do believe you need to do to finish the job. You need to caulk the gap between the crown molding and ceiling.
You girls should get paid big bucks for doing home renovations.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Anod! That caulking job is her husband’s homework, still yet to be done ha ha! XOXO
Cecilia from Georgia says
WOW HOW MANY COMMENTS DID YOU HAVE ON THIS? I love the transformation from dark as dreary to bright and cheery! I want to lighten my cabinets but not with paint, so I’m looking forward to seeing what you do with DB voodoo-gel-stain! Glad to have you back! XOXO
Christy says
I know, right? This was a popular one! I’m so glad you like it. Stay tuned for Tuesday…you might see another option you like, and it feels so good to be back for a fresh new year!! XOXO
Karen says
Oh my goodness! I seriously would not have known this was the same kitchen! Christy, it is just stunning.
Christy says
Hi Karen!! Thank you, my friend! I don’t think my sister was completely convinced that paint could save this kitchen ha ha! XOXO
Marian says

It doesn’t even look like the same kitchen. So clean and bright. Great work ladies! You are an inspiration.
Christy says

Cilla says
Well done ladies!
I’m a real estate agent in South Africa and plan to keep this transformation to show people how they can renovate a dated kitchen with mostly paint and some hard work.
Keep it coming!
regards
Christy says
Thank you, Cilla! Yes! It is amazing what a little paint can do! XOXO
Dorothy says
It turned out beautiful-I really like the choice of backsplash- adds a bit of sparkle. I never knew of white stain. Wow is that table and chair set ever lovely. The whole space looks wonderful.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Dorothy! I also love the sparkle that the backsplash adds! That was my first experience with white stain and I am so excited at how it transformed this set! XOXO
Holly says
Hi Christy, love both kitchens, especially the backsplash! I have New Venetian Gold Granite (are you familiar with it?) countertops and am wondering if that MoP (mother of pearl) backsplash would go with my granite. What are your thoughts? Too busy? I ordered a sample of it, but it’s such a small sample it’s hard to tell how It would look.
I’m also planning on repainting my cabinets an off white, due to the granite color(s). I love your work, so I thought you might help me out with this.
Christy says
Thank you, Holly! I think this backsplash could work with your granite. It’s really very subtle and has almost a creamy appearance. I liked it because it picked up the tans in our floor tile. I would order a whole box and tape them up and see if you like them. You can always return them if you don’t like them. Good luck! XOXO
Judith Laurence says
Your imagination and techniques are inspiring! I am so glad that our so generously share.
One question – what is the brand of her exhaust fan? I need one that size and hers looks so sleek compared to those I have seen thusfar.
Thank you, Judith
Christy says
Thank you so much, Judith! I finally caught my sister at home so she could tell me what kind of exhaust fan she has…it is an Allure by Broan. Hope that helps! XOXO
Ivory says
I love your kitchen, you did a fabulous job. Thanks for sharing
Christy says
Thank you so much, Ivory! It was long overdue lol! XOXO
Shell says
Love the makeover! You have inspired me. We don’t have granite counters but a similar color of formica. I think the shell tiles would tie things together. Your thoughts? Question, what color grout did you use? How is the paint holding up? Should I expect constant touchups?
Christy says
Thank you, Shell! I say go for it! Proper prep is key when painting cabinets. Try to find a cleaner that is also a deglosser and degreaser, so that you get the best results possible. This is my sister’s kitchen and it has held up fantastically! We used bright white grout. Good luck with yours! XOXO
