Hello lovely friends, and welcome back! I’ve got another redo of a redo to share today that involves a repurposed headboard. If you’re just joining us, I like to gather “hauls” of various thrift store treasures and work through them one by one, crossing them off as I go. For this round, I chose to redo a handful of items that I had already made over for my booth but that have been sitting longer than I would like. I thought it would be fun to give them all new makeovers!
Today’s take two is on this headboard I picked up several years ago at the thrift store for the incredibly low low price of just $3.49:
I actually purchased three of them at the time. The shape is just perfect for a sign which is how I repurposed the first two HERE and HERE.
This is the third look that I gave the final one:
I live in a coastal town, so I thought this was a good fit for this new sign. With no takers, a whole new look was in order!
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Sand
I started this do over by sanding down the surface with my small cat sander to smooth out the letters:
I would normally choose my rotary sander as it works a little harder, but it was raining. Since I was working in the garage, this one doesn’t send as much dust flying.
Paint
Once I had it sanded smooth, I gave it three coats of Dixie Belle’s Cotton:
Cotton is a nice, bright white.
Stencil
Then, I decided to pull out this clock stencil I’ve had for ages to help fill the large space in the center. ( I bought it from this seller, but it seems they only carry the 10 x 10 version at this time. I love their stencils though!)
I used Loctite spray adhesive on the back of the stencil first to hold it securely in place while I painted…
I like to use this acrylic craft paint for my stencils. I don’t have issues with it smearing while sanding and it washes off of my stencil easily. The sticky residue on the back from the adhesive can be cleaned with odorless mineral spirits, but I don’t usually worry about that.
I only needed one coat of the black acrylic paint and I removed my stencil while it was still wet:
Then I went back and filled in the breaks in the stencil as well as cleaned up any edges that needed it using my script liner brush:
This long thin brush is perfect for cleaning up any boo boos!
The center seemed to be missing something, so I went to my Silhouette Cameo to create some wording I could add:
I usually use inexpensive contact paper instead of vinyl since it’s cheaper.
Stripes
Next, I knew I wanted to fill the space on either side with something, and I decided that stripes would be just the thing!
I used FrogTape for delicate surfaces in a couple of sizes. I started with the 1.88 width for the center stripe, and once that was dry, I used the narrower size for the smaller stripes on either side:
I used a 50/50 mix of Manatee Gray and Cotton for the stripes.
Once everything was completely dry, I sanded lightly across the entire surface of the headboard with 220 grit sandpaper to smooth everything out. I decided not to shabby this one up this time!
Seal
I sealed this piece with Best Dang Wax in Clear using my Best Dang Brush to apply it and a soft clean cloth to buff it off.
Repurposed Headboard Take Two reveal
Here is how this once el cheapo hotel headboard looks now:
This look couldn’t be farther from its first makeover!
Clocks look great just about anywhere and although this isn’t a functioning clock, it still has that same classic vibe that a real one does.
Ever heard of J. London & CO clocks?
Ha ha probably not since I made it up.
Adding decorative hangers on either side added a little dimension and purpose:
I picked these up at Hobby Lobby several years ago for $2 each, but they have been too large for many of the projects I’ve tried to use them on. They started out dark, but I painted them in two coats of Cotton:
I sanded them liberally all over to shabby them up and then just drove two screws through the holes in the top to attach them…you can barely see them below:
This is hainging on the feature wall in my office. Whenever I use it as a backdrop, I get questions about it.
It’s Airstone Veneer and you can read more about it HERE.
This piece would be great in an entry, above a bed, above a sofa, etc. The hooks could hold lanterns or wreaths or be more functional for towels, coats, leashes, etc.
I hope y’all enjoyed this redo of a redo!
If you missed the others in this group, you can see their new makeovers at these links:

All that’s left is the small table in front. I really love it as is and so did y’all, so we’ll see if I actually redo it or not!
I’ll be back on Thursday with one of my favorites:
UPDATE: See the after HERE now!
I’ve been shopping for my new haul and I can’t wait to share!
Have an amazing week!!
XOXO,
Don’t Miss a Thing!
If you like what you see, there are several ways to follow along!
Heather Taylor says
That looks so good! I love the hangers, they really finish it off. Much better than the first version IMHO 🙂
Cheers
Heather
Christy says
Thank you, Heather! I agree! XOXO
Mary Kaiser says
Wow, I love how the 2nd round looks. I would be so cool to drill a center hole and add the battery pack to the back to make it a working clock! If I bought it, I would have to add the clock workings to it! You did an amazing job on the redo!
Christy says
Thank you, Mary! I actually considered making it a working clock for about a minute ha ha! Have a great day!! XOXO
Larissa ~ Prodigal Pieces says
Love the new look, Christy.
Christy says
Thank you, my friend! XOXO
Cara says
I would not have thought to use contact paper as your stencil, I think I will try this. As always, looks great and I love you made up the clock company name! Ha!
Christy says
Yes…it works so well! And ha ha…sounds legit though, right?? XOXO
Christina says
Oh I do love this makeover Christy! This isn’t going to last long in your booth yet I am surprised its previous makeover didn’t fly out.
Be well, stay warm and have some fun!
Christy says
Thank you, Christina! Hoping it sells this time!! XOXO
Jeannie says
It looks great! Hope it sells for you! You always have the best tips too! Using acrylic paint for stencils to wash off easier. And I don’t have a cricket but my neighbor does…the contact paper idea is brilliant! You’re so clever! Sometimes I have a found item and my creativity gets stumped. Then I try to think of what you would do! Lol
Christy says
Aww thank you, Jeannie! I love that and I’m so glad you find my tips helpful…I have to learn the hard way sometimes ha ha! XOXO
Teresa says
It’s lovely and functional, but looks either unfinished or broken without at least some painted-on click hands. Great job!
Christy says
Thank you, Teresa! I had thought of just adding clock hands, but then someone would wonder why it doesn’t work so…oh well ha ha! XOXO
Teresa says
Nah, I have a large click on my wall that I can’t get to work, so now it’s just decorative. No one has ever asked why the time is off! 😁 And I just use my phone or watch to see the time anyway.
Really admire your work!
Christy says
Ha ha! Thank you! XO
Denise Cox says
As much as I loved the coastal look, this is a FANTASTIC redo!!! I love!! Great look!!
Christy says
Aww yay! Thank you so much, Denise!! XOXO
Marci says
Hi Christy!
Love how this sign turned out on round #2 but then I liked the first version too.
Good thing I don’t live close to your booth… I would be one of your customers! (maybe #1 ?)
One question though… do you usually paint the back of your projects too? Thanks for another great post.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Marci!! I always paint the back if it’s in poor condition. For this piece, the back is really nice and clean, so I did not. XOXO
Toby says
Love it! fabulous as always!!
Christy says
Thank you so much, my friend! XOXO
Cecilia says
Who doesn’t love an oversized clock, even if it’s not functional? The hooks are awesome too. Nice!
Christy says
Right?? That’s what I say too ha ha! Thank you, Cecilia! XOXO
Bev w says
Just lovely! Too big for any spaces I have but oh I love it. What type of mounting hardware?
Christy says
Thank you, Bev!! This particular piece already has a french cleat type of hanging situation on the back. It’s easier to show what it is here if you’re not familiar: https://amzn.to/3KOxbl8 It’s similar but in wood. If I were to add my own hardware, I would use heavy duty D-ring hardware similar to this: https://amzn.to/3tbiMJt I hope that helps! XOXO
Judi Watkins says
Wow! You really do have “Redo Superpowers!” This piece is quite striking — I love it! Thank you so much for sharing your talents with us!
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Judi!! I have really enjoyed giving these pieces a second look! XOXO
Cheryl Atkinson says
Hi Christy! I believe it will sell now. It turned out great. I dont know about your booth business but it seems things have slowed way down since e the whole Ukraine ordeal has happened.
Christy says
Thank you, Cheryl! I hope so! Yes…I am feeling it too! Such a scary time! XOXO
Marcie Lovett says
I predicted stripes and hooks, but I totally missed the mark with my prediction of transfers on this one 😉
Someone is going to have the perfect place to hang it, Christy, and I predict it won’t stick around the booth this time.
Christy says
Thank you, Marcie! I love when you guess lol! I figure if this one hangs around for a while, at least it will look cute in my booth! XOXO
Cyndi says
I LOVE this! But I loved the “before” as well. It’s a good thing I don’t live near you, Christy. I would be broke buying all your stuff! LOL!
Christy says
Oh ha ha! Thank you so much, Cyndi! I liked the before as well…it was fun to play with once again though! XOXO
Kay says
Beautifully done! I’m going to check out clock stencil, been wanting to “custom” one …. & I think headboard idea is genius! May try to do one for above my fireplace! Thanks for all tips!!
Christy says
Thank you, Kay! The clock filled the space so nicely! Have fun! XOXO
CC says
I LOVE THEM BOTH!! SO GLAD YOU MENTIONED THE WALL IN YOUR OFFICE – I LOVE IT!! THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELPFUL HINTS!!
Christy says
Thank you so much, CC! I always get questions when I share that wall lol! XOXO
Barbara says
Loved these remakes. Hope you’ll let us know if they find new homes this time around.
Christy says
Thank you, Barbara! I sure will! XOXO
Cynthia says
Great job Christy. Wish I had a place for that beauty.
A while back I was painting my coffee bar and didn’t know what to do with the sides, then it popped into my head, “what would Christy do?” I did stripes. True story.
Cynthia
Christy says
Oh my goodness, I love that so much! Thank you, Cynthia!! XOXO

Sue H Mellette says
Christie, I love this makeover take 2! The white with a black clock is simply stunning1! the stripes and the painted hooks complete the look! Wish I had a place large enough for this pretty piece!! Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful week!
Christy says
Thanks so much Sue! I wish I had a big enough spot for it too…had to move furniture to hang it on my stone wall for pictures lol! Have a great week, my friend! XOXO
Jen says
Love this! If I lived near you I would be headed to your booth right now. I’m a sucker for clocks. Have 4 on the wall above my tv. The hands on my favorite one stopped working and I can’t fix it. Took the hands off for now, may leave it that way.
Christy says
Aww thank you, Jen!! I love clocks too and have several in my house. I rarely use them to tell the time, so when the batteries die, I just leave them ha ha! XOXO
Tara C says
Since it is a non-functioning clock, it would be cute to paint the time at 5:00 and possibly even add the words, “It’s five o’clock somewhere.”
Christy says
Oh yes, that would be super cute! XOXO
May says
I have a regulator clock that doesn’t work. When someone asks me if the clock has the right time, I always reply, “yes, twice a day.”
I love the redo.
Christy says
Ha ha!! That is so funny! Thank you, May!! XOXO
Leticia Beam says
Fantastic! I love this! Thanks for sharing! Leticia
Christy says
Thank you so much, Leticia! XOXO

Christy says
Thank you, Michele! I’m so glad you like it!! XOXO
Kim says
Huge fan of your work! Wondering what size the stencil is for a copycat version? Thanks for filling my Pinterest boards with tons of inspiration.
Christy says
I appreciate that so much, Kim, thank you! The stencil I used is 20″ X 20″. Hope that helps! XOXO
