I always want this blog of mine to be a place of joy, but I’m afraid I have some very sad news.
Unbeknown to us, one of our kitties was very sick when we got her. I took them both for their first well-check yesterday morning and although there were very few signs that were apparent to us, it turned out that Lucy was very anemic and had jaundice. We were cautioned by our vet that this indicated a very poor prognosis and that we may have a very difficult decision ahead of us. We took her directly to the emergency vet and stayed there for several hours yesterday while they ran more tests and gave her fluids. They started her on an antibiotic and sent us home hoping that at a 24-hour recheck, she would show signs of improvement. If she did not begin to improve, they were afraid she had a condition called Feline Infectious Peritonitis which is fatal to cats. When I checked on her first thing this morning, she looked terrible. She wouldn’t eat or drink and looked listless. I scooped her up and headed back to the emergency vet. They rushed her in and attempted to get a catheter in her to administer fluids and attempt to stabilize her, but soon after, she stopped breathing. My heart broke. How can you Fall so in love in such a short span of time?
Although we are clearly devastated, we don’t want to feel sad about it. We are choosing to acknowledge instead that we gave her the incredible gift of being loved, and boy have we loved on her! She didn’t suffer long and now rests with the angels.
Luckily, what Lucy had is not contagious and Lyla checked out to be very healthy other than a little cold in her eye. She is asleep on my lap as I am writing this. I am still so grateful that we decided to adopt them both.
After sharing the joy of getting them in yesterday’s post, it is so hard but necessary to share this news today. My apologies for the roller-coaster of emotions I’ve flooded you with as you share in my joy and then my heartbreak.
Thank you for all the well-wishes yesterday as I have not had a moment to answer all your wonderful and encouraging comments.
I will not be posting tomorrow, but hope to back and ready to go on Tuesday.
I love you all!! You make me feel blessed beyond measure!!
XOXOXOXO,
Kate says

Christy, please take all the time you need to grieve! As far as I’m concerned, our fur children are no different than our human ones! When I had to put my MinPin down in Aug. 2013, I was an absolute mess for a year, and at times still cannot say her name without crying /a tear. I call my Chihuahua ‘Maddie’ ‘ Clarice’ at times, my MinPin’s name.
God Bless you and your family… Your blogging family is thinking… 💐🌹😘
Christy says
Thank you so much, Denise. It’s amazing how they fill our hearts so quickly. ❤️

Christy says
Thank you, Jan. So true. ❤️
Kathy Coulter says
Don’t forget to include little Lyla as you grieve. She knows…..they always know. Just talk to her and reassure her. So glad you her to continue loving. Years ago when my daughter’s cat fell ill and went to kitty heaven, our old dog Angus knew it. Angus had not been able to get up the stairs for months due to doggie arthritis. But the next morning I found Angus upstairs, ON my daughters bed, which is a rather high up one with a deep mattress. We don’t know how the dog got up there, but she was cuddling my daughter to comfort her. Furry family members bring soul to a home. Bless you, sending hugs.
Christy says
Thank you, Kathy. That is so sweet of your pup reacting like that in your time of need. We have been giving extra love to Lyla for sure. ❤️
Holly says
I’m so sorry, but that is the risk we take when we adopt rescue animals. They’ve not always had the best start in life and we often have no way of knowing where they came from.

So sorry for your loss of the new kitten. She was able to be in a loving family for a short time along with her sibling. You didn’t have much time to love her but she was in a family with abundant love to give. That she was taken in with her sister as a “matched set” warmed my heart. I write this as tears flow, thinking of my own kitty that passed. Lucy will live on through Lyla. Best wishes at this difficult time. Love for a pet lasts forever. ❤️

Thank you so much for your kind and encouraging words, Laura. I’m sorry about your kitty too. They really capture our hearts. ❤️

I am a cat breeder for the last 25 years. Not to upset you but FIP is very contagious! Please watch your other kitten closely.
Not necessary to post this as it is just ment FYI.
I am sorry for your loss.
Christy says
Thank you, Marge. I have heard so much conflicting information, but my vet also said to keep a close eye on Lyla. Lucy was severely anemic and I almost believe that was what led to her demise, in which case, Lyla is safe. We are being very cautious though just in case…thank you. ❤️

Leanne Smook says
Oh my dear. That’s too tragic. We had to put our beloved little black cat Pixxie down 2 months ago. She had heart disease and kidney failure, and though she fought bravely eventually she gave up and it would’ve been cruel to try to keep her with us any longer. We had her for 7 glorious, love-filled years. We miss her every day. My heart breaks for you and I am so sorry for your loss.
Christy says
Thank you, Leanne. I am so sorry that happened to your sweet kitty. ❤️

I was asked once why I have pets when you have to let them go as they don’t live as long as us. Didn’t know how to answer at the time, but do now. What is a short time for us, is their entire life. It is about them. That is why we have pets.

This is heartbreaking! The feeling is too familiar to our family. We rescued a tiny kitten and named him Aizen Ryatt and had him for a week before he became very lethargic overnight. The vet told us he had Feline HIV and had to be put down as he didn’t get better. I didn’t understand why he came to our lives to leave so soon, but like you, figured he came to be loved for his time on earth. He was sooo loved and is still missed. Thank you for giving Lucy your love and attention. You made her time here on earth the best she could have had. <3 ;(
Christy says
Aww I’m so sorry you had to go through that too. But yes, all we can do is take comfort in the fact that we gave them the best life they could have known. Thank you for sharing that with me. ❤️

I’m so sorryto hear about Lucy. We had a similar thing. We got two new kittens at work and they both had FIP. One survived for a while but we had to put her down. Cedar is still alive and full of beans! She has to have some medicine butis very active and the customers
all love her.
Christy says
Thank you, Lori. How wonderful that one of yours survived. We are crossing our fingers for sweet Lyla that she stays healthy as well. ❤️
Lisa Johnson says
My heart goes out to you. Thank you for giving Lucy a loving home, and doing the right thing for her in getting her medical help. May she rest in peace, and may she live on in your heart. I have had 7 kitties in my life, and been through almost every disease known to felines, it is very hard to see them suffer, I know too well. God Bless-
Christy says
Thank you so much, Lisa. ❤️
Kimberly says

Christy says
Thank you so much, Kathy. ❤️
Teri Olsen says
So sorry for your loss. I work with a cat rescue in NC. Just keep in mind that there are so, so many kitties out there that need a loving home like yours. In time, maybe you’ll be ready to rescue another one. No need to reply just heal.
Christy says
Thank you, Teri. I appreciate that. This definitely won’t stop us from giving another kitty a loving home in the future. ❤️
Melissa says
So sorry that you lost your sweet kitty.
Christy says
Thank you, Melissa. ❤️
Cheryl Atkinson says
I’m so sorry Christy. I get attached very easily to animals and you are right, you gave her love. So sorry. Hug on that little Lyla and soon you will feel better.
Cheryl
Christy says
Thank you, Cheryl. Lyla has been getting extra love for sure. ❤️
Leslie says
Christy, you have my deepest condolences. I know you want to keep things upbeat for your readers, but you are right to mourn this sweet little life cut short, and to let us mourn with you. With FIP there’s no happy ending, so please remember that your adopting Lucy gave her the chance to feel love and security before she died.
Such good news that Lyla is healthy, so you can adopt a brother or sister for her when things get a little more back to normal for you all. I have had cats (and some dogs) my whole life and I volunteer in a cat rescue/shelter here in an Atlanta suburb. I understand what huge holes these little ones leave behind. My heart goes out to you and yours.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Leslie. Bless you for the volunteer work that you do. We definitely won’t let this stop us from adopting another sweet baby in the future. And you are right, it’s hard to share things like this in a place that I consider my happy place, but you all will never know how comforting your kind words have been to me, so I’m glad I decided to share. ❤️
Lori says
I’m very sorry to hear of your loss of precious Lucy. I don’t read many blogs but thoroughly enjoy yours as the love, kindness, and compassion that you have shows through in what you share and in how you share it. And as a reader I can’t help but smile as you honor our Heavenly Father through your love. Sending you Belated Birthday wishes from a Jersey Girl.
Christy says
Thank you, Lori. Your kind words are so vet much appreciated. ❤️
Glenda G Brown says
I am so sorry. You fell in love with that precious little baby, because that is what she was giving you. She came into your life for a purpose even if it was for a very short time. Love and enjoy her sister. My thoughts and prayers go out to you.
Christy says
Thank you, Glenda. You are right…she brought out that love in us for sure. ❤️
Brenda says
We had a cat that we loved so much. Taz also had FIP but we didn’t know it. He would hide from us and cry out in pain. Was a sad day when we had to relieve his suffering.
Christy says
Aww I’m so sorry you had to go through that, Brenda. It is heartbreaking. Luckily our little Lucy didn’t suffer long. ❤️
Fran says
My heart is heavy for you—there are no words for the pain of losing a beloved pet—once adopted or rescued they take a place in our hearts. As you said you gave her the greatest gift of love for her short life. I am happy that Lyla is healthy and there to comfort you.
Christy says
Thank you, Fran. Lyla has gotten all the snuggles and more, and we are feeling much better. ❤️
Jody says
You are correct. A few days of being loved is better than in a cage. And what she has is lethal. I would get another soon because the kitty is going to be looking for her sister.
Christy says
We were advised to wait on getting another to be sure Lyla is in the clear, but we mostly likely will as soon as we are able. ❤️
Sue Mellette says

It’s hard to lose them regardless of how long you have had them. I am glad you still have Lyla and she is healthy.

Christy,
So sorry for your loss. This was a blessing in disguise, that you found out this soon. We had a chocolate siamese that had FIP for six years and never knew. She never showed any signs. When they finally appeared the vet said, she suffered greatly. Take joy in that this new kitty didn’t suffer too long. Enjoy the other one!!!
From one cat mom to another, take care!😻
Christy says

I’m so sorry for your loss. We had a similar situation about a year ago. Our young kitten was born healthy, or so we thought. When she was about twelve weeks old she couldn’t use her back legs. She then developed seizures. We had to have her put to sleep. I understand how you feel. I still can’t believe how much we loved her. We still love and miss her. Her name was Sunny. The sweetest thing ever. Again, I’m so sorry.
Christy says
Thank you, Amy. I’m so sorry you had to experience that. They are so easy to love and both of our kitties were blessed to have had us to love them. ❤️
Cindy says
I am so sorry. I understand. We rescue (and keep) and have lost many. We are faced with the possibility of euthanizing one now, whose seizures cannot be controlled. You did all you could. Sending hugs.

I adopted two sister kittens several years ago, and one of them developed FIP, so I know what you went through, and the pain of loving and losing. I’ve adopted two more kitties, but this first one, my long haired calico rules our domicile like the queen she is :-). If we’re to know the joy of receiving love, we must also be prepared to experience the heartbreak, though we rarely are. It IS comforting somewhat, to know we gave them much love in the short time we were allotted with them.
Christy says
Thank you for sharing your story, Bobbie. It is reassuring to hear that the other sister lived on to be healthy. And yes…they were lucky to have known love. ❤️

Christy says
Thank you, Ann. I am so glad I shared as well. My blog family has been so comforting. ❤️
Lauri Kunze says
You said not to be sad, but while reading your story I must admit my eyes leaked a little… at my desk… at work. I know for sure how quickly you can fall in love. It brought back a flood of memories from mid-summer when my husband found a tiny abandoned, abused, terrified kitten in our backyard. We declared him a gift from God and a welcome playmate for the kitty we already have. But within a couple of hours it became obvious he was very I’ll. Some sad excuse for a human had super-glued his eyes shut! It was late on a Saturday night… No weekend vet was available way out where we live. We did our best to help him live, but then took turns holding and loving on our little gift as he slipped away. Thanks for sharing your story. You’re a treasure!!

Oh Lauri. I can’t even imagine the anger and heartbreak of finding that poor kitty in that condition. I’m sure he felt the love you gave him in his final hours. ❤️

Hi, I don’t see my original response so I’m reposting; I’m so sad to hear about Lucy, but you took such a beautiful picture of her I thought you might repurpose a gorgeous frame and keep her spirit alive in your household. That may kickstart the healing process too. Length of time you had her doesn’t even matter; she was still a beloved member of the family!
Christy says
Thanks again, Sharon. It took me a bit to get back to everyone, but I appreciate you wanting to be sure I got your message. You are so sweet. ❤️

Oh Christy, how devastating! I’m so SO sorry for you and the hole Lucy is leaving behind! Thank you for sharing this news with us, your readers, and for allowing us to help carry your burden, even just a tiny bit.
Christy says
I appreciate that so much, Sheila. My blog family has brought me so much comfort. ❤️

Hi Christy,
It is true, FIP is a fatal disease of cats but it is TRANSferable to other cats via feces, saliva, food dishes etc.; there is no definitive test to detect FIP; It is caused from a mutation of a very common virus found in most cats and nearly all cats have a strong enough immune system to fend off the FIP mutation. However, in the case of kittens, many times they are given a virus or upper respiratory infection from their mamma’s that just cannot be overcome and opens them up to other serious diseases.
Please make sure you call the place where you got the kittens! They need to know and if there are other siblings they should be quarantined for a short period of time. Also, just my opinion, don’t get the shots for your little furbaby until YOU feel the kitten is very healthy.
I had cause to know all this and still can’t talk about it but I feel your pain.
Christy says
Thank you, Mary. I’m sorry you also experienced a sad situation. I did call the shelter. These are the only two from that litter. So far Lyla appears healthy, but we are keeping a very close eye on her. ❤️

Christy, I’m so sorry for the loss of your sweet Lucy. It is absolutely heartbreaking to lose a furry loved one no matter how long or short you have known them. It only takes a moment to fall head over heels and each one has its own distinct personality and can never be replaced. My heart goes out to you! You are right, you gave Lucy the best little life she could have had right up to the end and that’s precious! So glad your little Lyla is doing well. I know she is enjoying your loving!
Christy says
Aww thank you, Megan. It was so unexpected and I think that’s what made it really difficult, but we are doing much better, thankfully. Loving on Lyla has really helped. XO

Christy, it was not by accident that you went to adopt one fur baby and brought home these two sisters! These girls did not have to be separated and you gave Lucy the love she could not have had anywhere else. My condolences. ❤️
Christy says
I believe that to be true as well, Kim. We were able to give her so much love in her short time with us. Thank you. XO
