Three days in a row?? What?? Hello amazing friends! I’m back for the third time this week to bring you a simple makeover…shabby candlesticks!
When I was looking for what I could tackle next in my Spring 2022 Haul, I immediately spied these candlesticks in my garage:
The shiny black spray paint and roughly painted bronze didn’t do much for this pair, but I knew it wouldn’t take a whole lot to pretty them up. For $5.75 a piece, I grabbed them up!
The spray was on there pretty thick, so I had originally planned to use Sea Spray to add some texture to camouflage that.
However, with all those gorgeous details, I knew what I really wanted for this set!
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Prep
To clean these candlesticks, I just took the brush end of my shop vac to them and then wiped them down with a clean cloth to remove any dust.
Then, to give them both the same base color, I sprayed them with flat black spray paint:
As you can see, I used my medium spray shelter to contain the spray.
Paint
Then, I started using my Best Dang Brush to get into all those details since I still had it out from painting the rattan on the chair I shared Tuesday:
The Best Dang Brush is excellent for painting detailed things, especially baskets, rattan, and frames that have a lot of detail.
However, I found that for the deeper details on these candlesticks, the smaller head of the Belle brush worked even better…
Sand
Once the painting was complete and dry, all that was left to do was sand to bring out all those pretty deatails to give them the shabby look I wanted for them…
I used 220 grit sandpaper wrapped around an old sanding sponge for this step, making sure not to sand too hard to take it below the black paint layer.
I left these unsealed as I do not expect them to be handled much.
Shabby Candlesticks
Here is how this set looks now!
Aren’t they huge?? Way too large for this dresser lol, but here you can see just how big they really are!
These would be perfect near a big soaker tub to add a quiet ambiance for a relaxing bath!
Sanding highlighted all the pretty parts beautifully:
Another option would have been to skip the spray paint prep, get right to painting, and then use the cheat method to distress them. You can see how I do that HERE.
But since I already had my spray shelter up, I just gave them a quick spray instead.
Such a simple makeover, but I think it did wonders for this pair.
One more down!! only FIVE to go!

Christy says
Thank you, P! They really do have such pretty details…it was a shame not to show them off! XOXO
Niki says
Those are yuge, and amazing! I like the white as another color might get a tad overwhelming with the size of them.
I can see these by a freestanding tub for a nice spa like bubble bath or in a reading nook or even on a porch/patio to ad some ambiance to a romantic dinner!!
Have a great weekend!!
Christy says
Thank you, Niki! I agree! Have a great weekend also! XOXO
Robin says
So nice. They can be used on the patio and beside a fireplace (or in it) also. I picked up a medium pair & refreshed them for my son. He didn’t want them (too much clutter in the apartment, lol) so I get to keep them to use in our new place (late 2023). I also picked up a single tall one like yours to paint the same way. I used clear wax on the first pair. What do you think about putting on a dark wax to add dimension?
Christy says
Thank you, Robin! They would be great near a fireplace! I love a clean white look, but you certainly could play up those details with dark wax rather than sanding! XOXO
Constance Colvin says
Boom! Another winner! I just love how you’re able to find a new, better life for EACH piece in your hauls. You don’t allow any of them to really stump you! I guess it really boils down to having that “good eye” when you shop (-:
Christy says
Aww thank you, Connie! I think that is very true…I can usually see the potential when I shop. The most challenging haul I have completed to date is definitely the FREE one where I redid things people gave me. I didn’t have that vision in the store that compelled me to buy each piece, you know? XOXO
Lizzy says
If I saw them in a store, I would buy them. Ornate anything + white paint = Love!
Christy says
Yay!! You and me are right there on the same page! I would have bought these too lol. Thank you, Lizzy!! XOXO
Denise Cox says
I have a large candlestick that I found at a consignment shop several years ago and I love it! You don’t see many of them. I love yours, as well. The details are incredible! I don’t see what color you used for the topcoat?
Christy says
Thanks, Denise! I did not seal these as I don’t expect them to be handled often, but if I wanted to seal them, I probably would have cheated and used a clear spray sealer from Rustoleum. Much easier on all those details lol! XOXO
Cheryl Atkinson says

I nbn uave painted a.pair of these before in kind of an old world shabby chic. Does that even make sense? I will find a.picture and try to copy it again and send you a.picture.
Christy says

Sandra says
Beautiful! I think I need to keep my eye out for candlesticks now!
Christy says
Thank you, Sandra! Candlesticks paint up so pretty! XOXO
Jamie Perez says
Love these! They would look nice on a huge fireplace mantel like my Mom has! I’ll be searching for some now! Also I really LOVE that clock! Where did you find? Thanks for the inspiration!
Jamie
Christy says
Thanks, Jamie! I found that clock at HomeGoods in 2017…wish I had a better resource for ya! XOXO
