Hello awesome friends!! I’ve got a quick makeover for y’all today! I was given this mirror by my sweet reader friend, Dianne, who lives locally, and it’s getting a shabby chic mirror makeover:
I believe she had purchased a dresser to redo that came with this mirror, but did not have a use for the mirror. So, she reached out to me to see if I was interested in it doing something with it. I liked the curves and decided to go pick it up! I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
I’m so glad I did because it ended up being a pretty simple makeover!
I removed the mirror (The backing was just screwed in place.) and gave it three coats of Cotton. When the Cotton was dry, I pulled out my distressing block and Coffee Bean:
I used them to cheat the distressing:
You can see in more details how I did that in this short video:
If you have any trouble viewing, you can see it on YouTube HERE.
I just made my block by attaching a wooden knob to a block of wood using wood glue, but you can find one on Amazon HERE also. They were sold out but are back in stock!
This is a great way to get a shabby chic look, especially when you have a lighter background and you want it show through darker.
If you don’t like how it looks in areas, while the paint is still wet, simply wipe it off with a very damp cloth and try again!
The only thing that was a bit odd about this mirror was the fact that the bottom almost looked like someone had chopped it off. I don’t think anyone did; it just looked weird to me.
Also, the bottom had absorbed moisture at one point and because it is pressboard, it soaked it right up along that bottom edge:
I didn’t have any trim on hand when I was ready to get started on this mirror, so I went ahead and started painting, but I was able to swing by Home Depot and pick up some trim the next day.
I cut it to fit with my miter saw and attached it with E6000 glue:
It really made a difference in how the bottom looked and it hid the damage the moisture had caused.
After attaching and painting the trim, I decided that the top area of this mirror could use a little something.
I thought it would be an ideal spot for a small transfer. I used one of the transfers from a sheet of mini transfers called Classic Vintage Labels by Re-designed by Prima:
You can still find this set of mini transfers on Etsy if you search the name.
Just enough embellishment!
I sealed everything with Dixie Belle’s Clear Coat in satin using their blue sponge.
This mirror is quite large so it would be great with a longer dresser also!
Thanks again for thinking of me, Dianne!
One more down woot woot!! You can barely see this mirror at the very back in the center:

The mirror turned out beautiful and that pink arrangement is gorgeous. Glad you thought of putting that trim at the bottom because it did look a little chopped off at the bottom but you think of everything. Another great job and a freebie at that.
Christy says
Thanks so much, Janice! Yes, it was very odd before…and you gotta love a freebie!! XOXO
Christina says

Sandra K Huntley says
I really like the way the mirror turned out, looking at the before picture I really didn’t see what you must have seen because I didn’t see anything that looked like what you ended up with. I guess it’s a good thing I’m not the one doing the rehabing.
Christy says
Ha ha thank you, Sandra!! I am still surprised sometimes at what a little paint can do! XOXO
Cecilia from Georgia says
Great save!! I have always used E6000 until the other day when I glued little feet on a tray and they kept popping off 🙁 I’m not sure if it was the finish on the tray or what so I hot glued those babies and they are staying where they belong. It’s always good to have a plan B!!! I love the French Linen and hope you will use it again. Take care!!
Christy says
Thank you, Cecilia! Oh no…I apply the glue and then wait about a minute before attaching the items I am trying to glue. I don’t have the tube in front of me, but I think it says something about that on it. I’m not sure if you saw that. Glad you were able to get it done with plan B ha ha! I am keeping my eyes out for a good project for the French Linen…I love it too! XOXO
Barbara Holmes says

Debbie in TX says
You fixed it up so pretty! The trim made all the difference at the bottom, and the transfer added just the right touch up top. I’ve been trying to decide if the pink flowers in the photo are real or fake — they are so eyecatching!!!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Debbie! The trim really did help and those transfers are the best! The flowers are…fakie fakes ha ha! I bought them at Micheals at the end of season a couple of years ago for 60 or 75% off, so I bought a bunch! I just love them! XOXO
Lizzy says
So pretty! It went from an ugly mirror to an item I would put in my home.
Christy says
Thank you, Lizzy! It had lovely curves, but that finish was terrible ha ha! XOXO
Marcie Lovett says
Love that distressing block trick! I think the mirror was attached to something originally, which is why the bottom is a little wonky, but now it looks fabulous. Such a simple makeover makes such a big difference, the transfer is the perfect finishing touch.
Christy says
I don’t know how I forgot about that block thing in my cabinet! It is awesome! And yep, Dianne said this mirror went to a dresser, but the trim really helped! Thanks, Marcie! XOXO
Becky says
Oh wow, I love it! That came out absolutely beautifully!
Christy says
Thank you, Becky! XOXO
Glenda Cotnam says
Love that distressing block. Going to have to make one! Do you just put paint all over the bottom and wipe on?
Christy says
That block is awesome! I just tip the paint jar up onto the block a bit and wipe the excess off on the lip of the jar, but you could just paint some paint on it and blot it a bit also. XOXO
Beverly Farkus says
Please explain how to use the wood block and dark paint.
Christy says
Hi Beverly! You can see a little better how I use the block in this post: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/shabby-mirror-makeover-how-to-cheat-a-distressed-look/ 🙂
Marian says

Christy says
Thank you, Marian! The trim helped so much. I’m so happy to hear you enjoy what I share! I can’t wait to shop again…my favorite thrift store hasn’t reopened yet, but hopefully soon! XOXO
