Hello dear friends! Today I’m back with another basket from my End of Summer Haul! I also have some exciting news, so stay tuned!
Today’s basket was actually one I found at the antique mall where I have my booth:
I don’t usually do too much shopping while I’m there because I’m usually in and out quickly. However, about mid April, I was really missing thrifting and because I could still get into the antique mall while the thrift stores were closed, I decided to take my time walking around the place to get that fix. That’s how I came upon this basket. I believe I paid $18 for it, which was crazy in my honest opinion, but I liked the solid wood top and it was unique.
I started this makeover in the same way that many of my basket makeovers start…with white paint. It really is my favorite for baskets. However, instead of starting with a quick coat of spray primer like I did with the basket I shared on Tuesday, I decided to dry brush this one instead with Dixie Belle’s Cotton:
I added more paint to my brush than I normally would when dry brushing because I wanted it to be more white. I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Then I gave the top three solid coats of Cotton…
I looked through my stash of stencils and found one I liked for this basket. I used spray adhesive on the back of the stencil to firmly hold it in place. Then I used craft paint and a small brush to fill in the stencil:
I applied two coats of paint and removed the stencil while the paint was still wet…
You can see all the breaks in the stencil that give it away as a stencil. (Find this stencil HERE.) I like to go back and fill in all those breaks with a script liner brush. You can see how I add stencils and do that in this video if you like:
If you have trouble viewing, find it on YouTube HERE.
When the paint was completely dry, I sanded across the top with 220 grit sandpaper wrapped around an old sanding sponge to smooth everything out and applied a coat of Clear Coat in Flat this time to seal, using the blue sponge.
It is a long way from where it started:
Let’s get a bit closer…
So much more personality now!
I love black and white together…
You can see where I filled in all those breaks the stencil left behind:
I love the dry-brushed finish with the solid white top as well:
This finish is so quick and easy to do since you aren’t trying to get solid coverage. I did the inside the same way.
Wouldn’t this be great in a guest room holding things your guests may need for their stay?
I didn’t seal the actual basket. Dixie Belle says that their paint does not require a sealer and that given enough cure time, it will be perfectly durable without. I’m not sure I trust that for furniture, but for the body of this basket, absolutely! Sealing your piece actually gives it a more lovely finish, so I prefer to seal just about everything, but it would be lost on the weave of this basket.
That’s one more piece closer to being finished with this haul!

And now for my exciting news!!
This arrived in our driveway yesterday:
That is several thousand dollars in Dixie Belle products! I finally took the leap so that I can ship all my own orders going forward! Since I became a retailer with Dixie Belle I have been doing a Drop ship method where you order from me, I place your order with Dixie Belle, and they ship directly to you. This has worked well for the most part, but I want y’all to get your products as soon as possible and I feel like I can serve you better this way!
I am aiming at getting all orders processed within 1-2 days so you will get your orders much more quickly! I also ship with the USPS which is far quicker than Fed Ex Ground for much of the country. I may still have to drop ship occasionally if I happen to run out of something or for gallon sized paint orders, but it shouldn’t happen too often!
Remember, you always get FREE SHIPPING in my ETSY shop on orders over $50. NO CODE necessary! The discount will be applied automatically. All orders under $50 still enjoy $8 flat rate shipping!
Thank you for supporting my small business!
I’ll be back on Tuesday with my Trash-to-Treasure girls sharing what I did with this ugly duckling:
UPDATE: No need to wait, see how this one turned out HERE now!
Can’t wait to see you then! Have a fantastic weekend!
XOXO,
Don’t Miss a Thing!
If you like what you see, there are several ways to follow along!
Petra says
Another gorgeous basket – and congrats to you for taking a different step with your business 😀
Christy says
Thank you, Petra! I’m really excited for this new direction with my business! XOXO
Denise says
You have to remember Christy that you were shopping at the place where you also sell your items and they are not cheap either so it doesn’t surprise me you payed 18 for the basket ❤️💙💚
Christy says
Oh yes, for sure! It was so unique that I really didn’t mind paying that at the time, and I knew I was helping out a fellow booth owner when business was shut down! XOXO
Mary Kaiser says
Wow did that basket turn out great, I love it now. Wowza where are you going to put all that Dixie Bell paint? I am excited for you, but where are you going to put it all and how are you going to organize it all? Looks like your going to have your work cut out for you. I will have to see if I need any paint, so glad that you’ll be shipping it now if I order.
Christy says
Thank you, Mary! I already had a wall of shelving all set to go in my storage room to store all my paint. It was like Christmas morning opening it all up ha ha! XOXO
Rebecca Collier says
Where do you buy your stencils? I would love to find some french country style stencils. Please advise
Christy says
Hi Rebecca! I found this stencil here: https://www.artisticstencildesigns.com/collections/french-stencils/products/french-marseille-stencil-10×13 I have found most of my stencils on that site. XOXO
Betty Bilnoski says
I love the basket makeover! Actually, I love all of your baskets.
And I’m excited for you that your business is growing. I’ll be ordering more DB paints. I especially like that you share pics of pieces you’ve painted with DB paint with the individual colors in your Etsy shop.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Betty! I am so excited to be able to be more hands-on serving my customers! I am glad you like the pictures in my shop…I need to try out more colors so I can add more photos! Have a great weekend! XOXO

Congratulations on your new shop, Christy! How exciting. I hope that its success exceeds your wildest expectations…and, your basket turned out beautifully, as usual. 🙂
Christy says
Thank you, Mary Beth! I appreciate your encouragement! XOXO
Becky says
Pretty basket!
THAT is a bunch of paint! 😊 You are going to be very busy! I appreciated how fast you shipped my order a couple months ago! It was cool to get a package that Christie herself actually touched!!! 😀😎😁 (My Gator Hide kitchen cabinets are holding up super well! I’m really impressed!)
Christy says
Thank you, Becky! That is a lot of paint…I was never so excited to see the Fed Ex man pull up ha ha! Yes, with delays related to COVID and then now with them trying to get products out to everyone that have been back-ordered due to COVID, I have been shipping as much myself as possible and I really like being able to fulfill orders so quickly! The only issue being that I was taking from my booth stock. Now I won’t have to yay! I’m thrilled to hear your cabinets are holding up so well! XOXO
Sue Duffy says
Congrats, Christy!
Christy says
Thank you, Sue! XOXO
Sharon says
I always enjoy reading your posts and see what great things you do with “found things”. I rarely go to Goodwill but was looking for cat blankets. I saw many things that I bet you would have purchased and turned into something fabulous. Now that I am pushing 80, I don’t do much but I so enjoy seeing yours. I still go to a few thrift stores but I am from a small area and don’t venture too far. so…..Thank you!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Sharon! Funny, I’ve been on the hunt for a cat blanket for Lyla’s chair and finally found a fun leopard print one this week! Thank you for following along with me! XOXO
Kathy W F says
You and your baskets…..so fun. One just can’t have enough of them. I have so many myself and love all the unique ways you can use them. I’m curious to see what’s in store for the Trash to Treasure basket make-over on Tuesday.
Christy says
You know I love me some baskets ha ha! They are great for storing so many things! I have started the next one and I’m excited to see where it goes! XOXO
Sandi Allen says
Love the transformation of this basket. I never thought of dry brushing a basket. It turned out beautiful!
Christy says
Thank you, Sandi! Dry brushing was so much easier than trying to paint the whole thing! XOXO
Karen says
Yikes! That is quite a leap! I will be placing my first time order soon. Two friends and I just made sweater pumpkins on Tuesday night using your tutorial. Lots of fun! I just checked out your stencil tutorial. What is a good source for stencils and the appliques you use, too? Hope you have a lot of shelving in your garage! : )
Christy says
Ha ha yes! I have been filling as many orders as I can lately myself since Dixie Belle has been backed up and I love being able to get orders out so quickly, but didn’t enjoy the trip to my booth every other day to pick up stock. Now I won’t have to! I’m so glad to hear you made pumpkins!! The sleeves make them so easy, right? My favorite place to purchase stencils is here: https://www.artisticstencildesigns.com They have a bunch of pretty ones to choose from. I don’t have one particular place to find the transfers. I buy them on Amazon and Etsy mostly. I just try to find whoever has the best deal on them. XOXO
Robin says
Love the way your picnic baskets are transformed! I have acquired 2 of them similar to the one you made over on Tuesday. One is an 18″ oblong and the other is smaller so they could probably be stacked. Can’t wait to attack them. Stenciling or using the transfers the lids make them unique!
Christy says
Thank you, Robin! Oh yes, I love when you can stack them…have fun! XOXO
Sue Mellette says
Love the basket makeover! The transfer in black makes such a difference. Yes, this would be wonderful for guests to use and even better because it was created by you – the hostess!! Great news, too, about Dixie Belle paint! I will have to get my list together for an order! Thanks for offering this opportunity!! Have a great weekend.
Christy says
Thank you, Sue! And yes, I am so excited to be able to serve my customers more personally!! XOXO
Kathy Blumenberg says
Thank you for sharing once again, you inspire us to go out and transform something into a beautiful piece we can be proud of.
Christy says
Aww I love that, Kathy, thank you! It is always a pleasure to share! XOXO
Terry Moore says
Not only do I love what you did with the basket, I want to congratulate you on your paint business. Dixie Belle is a great paint and if I’m ever in need again, I will buy from you sweet friend!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Terry! I appreciate that! XOXO
Mary Loveland says
Congrats on doing your own shipping! The basket looks great, it is so nice you give older baskets a new life!
Christy says
Thank you, Mary!! You know I love baskets! XOXO
Rosie says
Great makeover Christy! Your next basket is so similar to one I have, looking forward to seeing what you do, I just ended up spray painting mine in white ( had too much on my plate lol)for a quick refresh . Enjoy your weekend!
Christy says
Thank you, Rosie! I just started on it and I am excited to see where it goes! Enjoy your weekend too! XOXO
Kathy M says
Christy, that stencil fit so perfectly! Where do you get stencils like that, or did you make that one? Like everyone of your makeovers, it’s adorable! I also would love to find that clock! Do you remember where you purchased it?
Christy says
Thank you, Kathy! I found that stencil here: https://www.artisticstencildesigns.com/collections/french-stencils/products/french-marseille-stencil-10×13 I have purchased most of my stencils from them as they have a bunch to choose from! The clock was a HomeGoods find about three years ago. It was one of the first things I bought for our new house! Have a great weekend! XOXO
Karen H says
Kristy, that basket turned out great! And I am so excited about all of your Dixie Belle products. I have quite a few more things I would like to get, so there will be more orders from me! So awesome of you to keep your customers in mind!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Karen! I appreciate your business, my friend and I appreciate your support! XOXO
Karolyn Love says
So pretty! I love the handles on either end…have not seen that stationary handle feature before and I would have grabbed it, too!! Very nice!
Christy says
Thank you, Karolyn! I had never seen one like this before with those handles either, so I just had to get it! XOXO
Cecilia from Georgia says
How exciting for you! and the basket is so versatile now. I can see it with my stationery and note pads hidden inside! Another great idea from you! Take care moving all those boxes 😉 Have a good weekend.
Christy says
Thank you, Cecilia! Oh yes, perfect for stationary! I got all my boxes moved, unpacked, and organized…open for business now ha ha! XOXO
susan says
So glad we’ll be able to get DB products directly from you now! And the basket is lovely as usual!
Christy says
Yes!! It has been so nice to be able to fill orders right away! And thank you!! XOXO
Anita says
I love all your pieces, Christy! Congrats on the expansion of your business. Just wondering if you ship to Canada. I’ve tried to get Dixie Bell paints in Canada in the past with no luck. We have a fairly local Annie Sloan supplier, but I don’t love the wax finishes for bigger pieces and would love to try the sealers from Dixie Bell.
Thanks so much for your dedication to your blog. It is a weekly highlight for me to see your latest transformations!
Take care!
Anita
Christy says
Thank you so much, Anita! I do no ship to Canada, unfortunately, but Dixie Belle has expanded into Canada. You can search retailers here to see if there is a location near you: https://dixiebellepaint.com/find-a-dixie-belle-paint-retailer/ If not, there are retailers on Etsy that are based in Canada also. Here is one of them: https://www.etsy.com/shop/RestorationPaintsEtc I hope this helps! Thank you so much for following along with me each week! XOXO
