Amazing friends, if you’ve spent any time around here at all, then you know I am all about a good before and after. Today is no exception. If you stopped by yesterday, you saw how I updated my faded and tired patio set into fresh new decor for our back deck:
I am over the moon that I was able to use my existing patio set once again, and I love having so much color in our outdoor space! See more details HERE. (You may want to start there anyway if you missed it!)
Today my sweet friend, Krista from The Happy Housie, is continuing her Seasonal Simplicity Summer Series with outdoor porches, patios, and decks. I saved the other side of our deck space just for today!
First, here is what our deck space looked like a couple of months ago:
We bought this house last August and it looks like the deck hadn’t been cleaned in years!
I pressure washed and stained the deck first. (Look for that exciting post on Tuesday! 🙂 )
And here is how our refreshed deck space looks now:
Such a huge difference!
Our sad old table finally kicked the bucket…
So I knew I had to break down and buy a new table. Those of you that follow me know how hard it is for my to buy new, and it took a little deep breathing, but I did it. Then I went all crazy and bought new chairs as well!
All of these pieces are from Pier one:
I loved these wicker chairs the moment I saw them:
However the table that went with them was rectangular, and I really needed a round or square table for this space. I ended up choosing this round metal one to coordinate with the other pieces I had already painted for our deck:
Unfortunately when it arrived, it was not white, but more of an almond color. I was so bummed and I just did not want to deal with having to take it back and then search for one that would work. So once again, spray paint to the rescue. Yes I had to take spray paint to my brand new nothing-else-wrong-with-it-paid-too-much-for-it table. But at least now I now have a look I love.
I also purchased the seat cushions from Pier One that go with these chairs:
They have a ton of prints to choose from. I purchased the matching throw pillows for my “new” loveseat that I shared yesterday as well to bring the spaces together. By the way, I am in no way affiliated with Pier one.
As I mentioned yesterday, the blue pillows are from HomeGoods.
Having them sprinkled throughout our deck space adds such a pretty splash of color out here.
I also used them on our chairs down by the pool…
And yep, those are my dining chairs from my old set! Paint is like magic in a can!
The seat cushions came from Lowes, and I shared our new DIY Rolling Umbrella Base last week if you missed that.
Brennan was hanging out with me while I was taking pictures…
And this is what it looks like photographing your spaces while your kiddos are out for Summer break…
1. “Hey Mom, take my picture!”
2. “Hey Mom, get this one of me giving a thumbs up!” “Can I see what it looks like?”
3. Outright photobomb
4. “Hey Mom, take a picture of me making this funny face!” “Did you get that? Can I see it?”
5. “Hey Mom, take a picture of me holding this lemon!” Me: “Just smile, you don’t need to hold the lemon.” “But I really want to hold the lemon!”
6. “Hey Mom, take a picture of me pretending I’m asleep.” “Can you tell in the picture that I was snoring?”
He always wants his picture taken when he sees me with my camera, and of course I oblige.
The water to the slide is turned off here, but when we turn it on, it has a lovely waterFall sound.
And the stuff I intentionally tried not to get in the photos…
I can’t tell you how funny it is to see a hotdog or giant bottle of mustard flying by your window…
My hubby and I were whacking each other with the ketchup and mustard after he blew them up and we agreed that that is how we would settle any arguments in the future, a good old fashioned condiment-whacking!
The rug is from Target and was the jumping-off point for our color scheme out here…
The green space beyond our fence was one of the reasons we fell in love with this house! You don’t get much of that around here.
I hope you enjoyed the tour!

You have such a great back yard! The tables and chairs turned out so pretty, and it all looks so inviting. Loved seeing all your flowers, as well as the photos of Brennan and the pool toys. Keeping it real! What a fantastic job you did on the deck!
Christy says
Thank you, Debbie!! I really miss my garden at my old house, so you know I had to add as many flowers to my deck space as possible until we can tackle the landscape here. Glad you enjoyed the “real” stuff ha ha! XOXO
Heidy says
You do the best job at making everything look fabulous. I wish I had your eye and energy. The color scheme is beautiful and I positively love the color of the umbrella tied in with the color of the back cushions. Those two colors are perfect together. Pier 1 is a place I have trouble driving by without stopping in. Those chairs look so comfortable and the love seat, chairs and coffee table look perfect! Your little guy cracks me up, he’s adorable. Thank you for sharing, I always look forward to seeing your work…I love it!
Christy says
Wow thank you so much, Heidy! I am so glad those colors worked so well together…and I love me some Pier One as well! The chairs are super comfy! XO
Krista says
Bwahaha. Love the out takes of your little guy! So cute! And the commentary… ya, I definitely get that! We have one more week after this of school, and I can’t wait – even if it makes for more difficult photo shoots:) Your space looks amazing – love the white paint makeover! And the new chairs are gorgeous. So glad you could be part of this hop today, friend! Happy Summer!
Christy says
Thank you, Krista! Brennan was cracking me up! He always follows me around when I have my camera out. We just started Summer break this week and it has been so nice! Thanks for hosting and enjoy your Summer break!! XOXO
Ellen Shook says
What a great space you have created for your family! Not only is it beautiful, it is fun. I practically keep Pier 1 in business in m neighborhood. I can’t tell you how many things I have bought which I immediately painted. Basically I shop for shapes, and then conform the item to my taste. Your Brennan reminds me of my Brendan — who is now 50 years old and still just as mischievous!
Christy says
Thanks so much, Ellen! I too love Pier One! I may not have been thrilled at the thought of spray painting a brand new table, but you’re right…now it conforms to my taste and is just perfect! I’m sure Brennan will keep me smiling for years to come as well! XOXO
Stacy Risenmay says

Ange says
❤️❤️❤️ the chairs. Everything came together beautifully. And the kiddo was a hoot. The dialogue made me laugh.
Christy says
Thank you, Ange!! He was cracking me up so I had to share! XOXO
LJ says
How did you get the wood on your deck from drab to FAB?! Can you provide the steps you took to make the wood look like new? Did you have to sand down every railing? If so, what type of sander did you use? How long did the project take you? Any tips?
Christy says
Hi LJ! I pressure washed our deck. I’ll be sharing how I did it all on Tuesday if you want to stop back by for all the details 🙂
Suzanne says
Christy, Great makeover, so cheerful and love the colors. Your male model added a special touch to the photos, too. It is so much fun when they are young and carefree. Your family and friends will enjoy the lovely outdoor space so much! Enjoy, Suzanne
Christy says
Thank you, Suzanne! I usually take my photos while my boys are at school, but now that it is Summer break, my youngest likes to follow me around while I’m photographing. And honestly, I kind of love it! XOXO
MaryJean says
Your outdoor retreat is lovely! If I had a pool in my yard it would be filled with leaves and hickory nuts since we are surrounded by trees and a woods in the back. ???? Like you that is the reason we bought our house. I love the outdoors. There’s been many a night my boys when they were much younger, camped with their friends in our backyard. Next it will be their boys’ turn to do some camping! Great post, love the blue!
Christy says
Thank you, MJ! I bet your yard holds many precious memories and will continue to help make more in the future! XOXO

Cherie Zack says
I have a pool deck on the back side of our pool and I would love to put a rug out there to anchor the deck and patio set. However, we live in West Florida and it rains here every day during the summer. How do you keep your rug looking so good? Would love to know. I’m hoping to do the same but worried a rug would only last a week. ????
Christy says
Hi Cherie! My outdoor rugs usually withstand the elements pretty well, but the issue I usually have is they fade after a while. I used to have a rug made by a company called Madmats and it was beautiful and it was made from recycled plastic! It lasted for about three years staying outdoors the whole time, and it never faded. Here is an example on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Mad-Mats®-Garland-Indoor-Outdoor/dp/B007IURP2G/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1531452605&sr=8-5&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=mad+mats&dpPl=1&dpID=61opA8ZFBvL&ref=plSrchMaybe that is an option for you? Good luck! XO
