Awesome friends, I am so excited to bring y’all another episode of my video series with my blogging bestie, Nancy from Artsy Chicks Rule: Thrift Shop Shakedown #4!
As you know, we love thrifting, but it’s even more fun when we can take you with us!! In this video, we take you thrift shopping with us to pick out something for each of us to make over.
Today we are also sharing what we did with the items we found!
But first, enjoy the video of our shopping trip:
If you don’t see the video or have trouble viewing it, you can see it on YouTube HERE!
We laughed a lot that day!
I found a few things on that trip:
You probably remember that funky lattice tote I already shared. I picked it up for 99¢. If you missed it, you can see that makeover HERE.
But today I am making over this mirror you saw us find in the video:
This isn’t something I would normally have brought home, but it was a fun challenge for our video. It was also only $4.25!
I decided to sand it down and give it a whitewash treatment:
Not too bad now, huh?
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products l love.
It had kind of a beachy vibe before in a very colorful sort of way, but now it is more my coastal style.
It almost reminds me of driftwood.
To get this look, I first used my rotary sander and 150 grit sandpaper to sand away the rainbow of colors.
This would have been a great candidate for citristrip, but I was impatient. (You can also see I removed the mirror before I got started.)
Then I used my shop vac to clear away any dust from sanding.
To age the surface a bit in preparation for white washing, I applied Varathane weathered wood accelerator with a cloth…
I only did one coat. Then I watered down some of my Bit of Sugar by Behr flat paint (not made into chalk paint this time)…
And applied it liberally with a brush:
Then I quickly went behind that with a dry cloth to remove most of the paint:
I dragged the cloth across the surface from edge to edge in long even strokes. I worked in sections and continued to add paint, and remove with my cloth until I got a look I liked. (You will want to wear gloves for this and the stain so you don’t make a mess of your fingers.)
I sealed with Annie Sloan’s clear soft wax and called it a day!
Summer flowers and pumpkins? Sure, why not…it’s still in the mid 80’s around here! Speaking of pumpkins, do you remember these cuties I shared not too long ago?
You can find the super easy tutorial for those HERE.
I hoped you enjoyed our video and this simple makeover!
This is what Nancy found to make over on our shopping trip:
Hop on over and visit her HERE to see what she did with it!
If you missed our last thrifting video, you can see that HERE!
I’ll be back on Tuesday sharing this table…it was the best deal I ever got at a thrift Store!
UPDATE: See it HERE now! 😀

So fun virtual shopping with you and Nancy. 🙂
The porthole type mirror turned out beautiful. If it goes into your shop, I know it will sell quickly.
Enjoy!!

Christine DiTrinco Prowak says
Hi Christy, I’m wondering about doing this paint method so it’s food safe. I’d like to do it on a new, unfinished wood round to use as a serving tray? Would sealing it with wax be all i need to do? Thanks!
Christy says
Yes! Annie Sloan’s wax is food safe once fully cured which is after about 21 days. 🙂
Michele Branham says
Love it!
Christy says
Thanks, Michele! XOXO

Ilene Goodenough says
How do you decide weather to use chalk paint or spray paint?
I just got a metal cherub lamp and it was gold and I thought it would
Look great in a white distressed finish. I used chalk paint and it just
Looks messy. I was wondering if I should have sprayed it. I noticed you use a spray
On the metal hardware so I have concluded that maybe metal should be sprayed instead.
Christy says
Hi Ilene! Your lamp will probably look better if you give it more coats, but yes I would probably use a spray on something with a lot of details. XO
Constance Colvin says
Christy! I can’t find the video?
Christy says
Oh no! It should be after I say, “But first, enjoy the video of our shopping trip.” Maybe it is taking a minute to load?

Hi Christy, I had the same trouble with the video, both on your site and the Artsy Chick site. Where it says “enjoy the video,” there is no link. Nothing on her site either. I tried to get there from two different browsers, but neither could find it…nor could a search from the home page. Help?
Christy says
I’m so sorry! I just added a link to the post where you can see it on Youtube if you are having trouble viewing it on the blog. Here is a direct link: https://youtu.be/Ae4vrLvkKYc 🙂

Cecilia from Georgia says
Hi Christie! I love the mirror! We are just getting power after Michael went through and blasted our little town. I’m catching up on my blogs and didn’t realize how much I miss y’all when I don’t “check in”.
Christy says
Thank you, Cecilia! I know you must be so thrilled to have your power back! A few years ago I lost mine for 11 days after a hurricane and it was crazy! Glad to hear from you and that you’re safe! XOXO
