Hello beautiful friends! I’m back today with what was left from thrift store haul #2, three pieces that turned into pretty home decor!
Here is the first item I’m sharing today:
This was a steal at $9.98, but this was not an unusual find. I find pretty mirrors similarly priced quite often and they are usually good sellers for me. If you’re in need of a mirror, definitely hit up the thrift store first. This one was from 1977 according the stamp on the back and it was heavy duty plastic. I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
I decided to go from old gold to more coastal on this one:
This is Behr’s Gray Morning, mixed with about a third white, made into DIY chalk paint. (Recipe HERE.)
I painted one coat of white as a base first.
Then I used my favorite brush for painting those details to add one coat of the Gray Morning:
This is Amy Howard’s 2″ Round Wax Brush Paint Brush. I believe it is intended for wax, but it says “paint brush” on it so I’m not sure. I was lucky to get one in my goodie bag from one of the blogging conferences I attended. HERE is one very similar to it on Amazon. This type of brush works amazingly well on all those details!
I also painted the back, inside edge all the way around so the mirror would reflect the blue.
I sanded lightly all over with 220 grit sandpaper which highlighted the details a bit more…
I used spray clear sealer to seal the frame. Easy!
Putting it back together was pretty simple this time since the back was just screwed in place.
Trying to photograph mirrors isn’t always easy! Halloo!
I had to hide behind the flowers. 🙂
Next is this set of candleholders I picked up for $2.25 a piece:
Just look at those dreamy details! I knew these would paint up beautifully!
This is Bit of Sugar by Behr, made into DIY chalk paint. Using chalk paint instead of spray paint adds so much more texture. (I taped off the glass parts with FrogTape first.)
I sanded lightly and sealed with Annie Sloan’s clear wax.
I love that the brass threads can be seen through the glass:
And that’s my faux-real rose arrangement I made with fake water last Spring. Still lookin good!
And the final piece from my last haul is this frame I picked up on clearance for $1.98:
Ya’ll know I love clearance at the thrift store!!
I was looking for a couple of frames for myself and I thought this one would paint up pretty:
That’s me and my sweet Jack…
I can’t believe he’s almost 17 now.
I used Behr’s Bit of Sugar on this one too. And just like the others, I sanded lightly all over with 220 grit sandpaper.
Sometimes if you use a spray sealer on metal, a pink hue will come through. That happened here, and I ended up repainting and sealing with Annie Sloan’s clear wax instead.
The clock is the only thing that was bought new or as-is here, that was a HomeGoods find…
This dresser belonged to our previous neighbor. You can see the makeover with its mirror HERE.
I love all the white on white, and you gotta love decor that costs less than lunch, am I right?
I hope you enjoyed seeing these last three makeovers. I grouped them together since they were so simple!
That officially completes this pile-o-treasures!
It seems like these went by quickly doesn’t it?

Wow, you did it, all the way through the 2nd group, good for you!!! I love all of the items you redid, My favorite of these 3 pieces is the frame with you and Jacks picture it in, so cute! wow on the shelving unit, that looks big, I could use that! I really love how you are buying a bunch of things and then working through all of them before getting more, it is so fun to see all of your accomplishments
Christy says
Thanks, Mary! I’m glad you are enjoying seeing me work through each new group…it has really helped me stay on track too! I love that frame as well, of course it is because of what it holds. 🙂
Candy says
Beautiful job and I really love those candle sticks.
Blessings, Candy
Christy says
Thank you, Candy! Those were a great find! XO
Sandra says
Look forward to Tuesday and Thursday makeovers. I have had a booth for twelve years…..I really enjoy it but sales are way down in our area. It’s much more fun when things fly out the door….I know your items do. Keep up the good work and know that your posts are really enjoyed.
Christy says
Thank you SO much, Sandra! I appreciate that!! Don’t worry, my sales have been down lately as well! I think the furniture pieces I have in my booth at the moment are too taste-specific. But I need to sell them to make room for other pieces! Thank goodness I have some smaller things that are still moving, but they don’t pay the bills! Here’s hoping business picks up for both of us soon! XOXO
Nancy says
I love how you lightened and brighten everything. Love, love, love those candlesticks.
Christy says
Thank you, Nancy!! Weren’t those candlesticks a great find?! XOXO
Christina in SW FL says
Wow! A three-fer! The mirror looks great! Love the color and texture. You gave it new life! The candle stick holders are SO much better white. The frame, oh my stars, I can now see the details. You completely rocked these and thank you!
I can’t wait to see the shelving unit!
Have a wonderful week!!

❤️ the peek-a-boo photo. So very cute.

Janice Holt says
Loved all three projects but the candle holders were my favorite. Never disappointed of course. Looking forward to Thursday’s project.
Christy says
Aww thank you, Janice! The candleholders might be my favorite too! XOXO
Shannon says
I’m really super excited to see that mirror! I recently bought a 1971 house and I have the same mirror in my bathroom, only about 4 times the size! I didn’t want to replace, a because it would be so expensive. I wasn’t sure how the plastic frame would paint, so I’m delighted to see how great it turned out! Thank you!
Christy says
Oh that’s awesome!! In person this one doesn’t look plastic at all. Yours is going to be gorgeous!! XO
Kira M Sayler says
Thanks again and again Christy for all the inspiration! You make me smile 🙂
Christy says
Aww it is totally my pleasure, Kira! Thank you!! XOXO
Kimberly says
Loved the haul makeovers and can’t wait to see what you’ve done with the shelving unit!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Kimberly! Glad you enjoyed them! XOXO
Robyn Wright says
Thank you for the “peek” of you taking the picture. I love “behind the scenes” stuff. I’ve never seen a shelving unit like this one before. Can’t wait for Thursday. So I found an Ethan Allen end table at the thrift store for $12. I’m going to bite the bullet and start refinishing some things. Wish me luck!
Christy says
Yay! I absolutely love that you are taking the plunge! Be careful though…it is addictive ha ha! Good luck! And I don’t show my face too often around here, but I couldn’t resist this one…the camera kept focusing on my face in the reflection instead of the frame LOL! XOXO
Debbie in TX says
Wow, that beautiful color really grabbed my attention. And all those details take on a new life with the paint. The mirror is just beautiful. Loved seeing you in the photo!!
Christy says
Thank you, Debbie! This used to be my favorite blue before I found the sunken pool, and I still like to go back to it every now and then! Glad you enjoyed the photo bomb! XOXO
Lauri Kunze says
Decor that costs less than lunch! I love that line. Hope you don’t mind if I borrow it next time I get asked why I brought some old thing home!
Christy says
Right?? Ha ha you go right ahead!! XO
Kathleen Hicks says
Nicely done, but too much white. Others use too much turquoise or some such color. More
color.variety I am after and I do like natural wood also.
Christy says
Ooh I LOVE white!! That, of course, is why I use it so much. I’m afraid you won’t find a ton of bold color around here, my friend! So sorry! XO
Rose Lefebvre says
I love every piece! They are all lovely and definitely look better in their new colors!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Rose! Paint is magical for sure! XOXO
Mariele Storm says
I really like the way the mirror turned out, even though they’re all lovely. 🙂 Nice to see the lady behind these magic makeovers, too! 😉
Christy says
Thank you, Mariele! I figure I have to show my face around here every once in a while LOL. Have I ever told you how much I love your name! XOXO
Mariele Storm says
Thank you!! <3
Christy says
You’re welcome! 🙂
Addie says
Oh!!! my!!! That picture of you in the mirror is just the best!!!! Keep it real. Sister!!!!
Keep going on all your make overs!!!
Addie XXOO
Christy says
Aww thank you, Addie!! XOXO
Margie says
Love that mirror, question since it was plastic did you have to treat it in anyway before painting? Happy Spring ????
Christy says
Thank you, Margie! Nope…no special prep needed. It painted up beautifully! XO
Marcie Lovett says
I’m kind of sad that you’ve finished these, but I know there’s plenty more to come. I don’t know which of those was worse, the candlesticks or the picture frame. I keep scrolling up and down because I can’t believe that’s the same frame. I still don’t know how you see past what there is, to what can be! I would never have imagined they could look that good with a cleanup and a paint job.
Christy says
Aww no need to be sad…I have a huge new pile of treasures to share on Thursday! I do usually have an idea of how something will turn out after painting it, but many times I am super surprised at how well they really do turn out. That frame was a surprising one for me as well… I really loved it because it was so cheap ha ha. XOXO
Cecilia from Georgia says
BAM!! You did it! Knocked those treasures out fast girl! Love how you get an ugly piece of what would otherwise be junk, to look like an expensive item found in a fancy store! I don’t know how you keep up the pace. Have a good rest of the week! XOXO
Christy says
Thank you, Cecilia! I’ll tell ya, knowing that I have to pick from a group of projects has made it so much easier for me to stay on track and knock things out! XOXO
Becky says
Win, win, win! Good grief, how do you DO it?!? Gorgeous, all of it. Those candle holders looked so hopeless and dark and heavy to me, and… now they might be my favorite of the three?! Ohhhh, I don’t know. I have to have some loyalty to that beautiful mirror too, he and I were born in the same year, haha!
I really love seeing your whole pile of “…treasures ????” turn into gorgeous TREASURES. And really, NO one finishes the WHOLE pile, right?!? You WIN!
I think I’m just going to have you over to refinish my whole house for me. Can you fit that in this spring? ????????
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Becky!! I am still always amazed at what paint can do! And honestly, I have never finished a whole pile until I started making myself accountable this way ha ha! Yes…I have lots of free time bahahahaha! XOXO
Dee Bell says
Thrift shops are like orphanages for belongings. Then you rescue them from a life of drudgery and pretty them up for their adopted parents. Wonderful! Sooooo inspiring! Thank you.
Christy says
Great analogy, Dee! I do love that these forgotten pieces are getting a new chance at life! Thank you!! XOXO
Shirley says
I was wondering::: do you ever get tired of using or looking at the tealy, Greeney, blueish, that you use in a lot of your painting? Or are they peaceful, calming colors? Do you actually use these colors in your own home? Love the color you used on the mirror even though I loved the gold too…lol. I love just about any decor except for mid century modern and I’m coming into that slowly.
Christy says
Nope! I use them a lot because I do love them so, and I use them in my own home. My kitchen island is a soft aqua blue…you can see that here if you like: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/kitchen-makeover-reveal/
I’m warming up to mid century modern a bit too, although not for my own home yet. Thanks, Shirley! ????
