Hello, amazing friends and welcome to Trash-to-Treasure Tuesday! I am on vacay woohoo, however, I did this little vintage magazine table makeover before leaving so I could join my friends today! Be on the lookout for their makeovers at the bottom!
You may remember this pretty side table one of my super sweet neighbors passed along to me in the Fall.
Well she also offered this piece, a vintage magazine table:
I wasn’t as excited about this one, but I couldn’t leave it behind.
I originally thought about removing the magazine holders on either side, but that would have made it a bit boring, so it stayed as is!
*Just a reminder that my Etsy shop is on vacation with us this week but will reopen tomorrow on Friday, April 14th!*
Clean
The first order of business was a serious cleaning. This thing was dirty! I used White Lightning which comes in a powder form that you mix …one TBSP into a half gallon of warm water:
I told y’all this thing was dirty. I had picked it up from a storage unit where it had probably been stored for several years.
It’s important to swap out your water for clean water and give your project another wipe down to get it the cleanest possible:
(My hubby tossed my old Mr. Clean Sponge tub because he thought it was trash, but I found a new one!)
If I were going to paint this anything other than a dark color, I would follow up with a coat of BOSS to tame any potential bleed through. But, I decided to go dark this time!
Paint
I chose Caviar for this one!
It covers great in one coat, but I always do two.
Sand
Once it was dry, I sanded all over with my sanding sponge:
These padded sanding sponges are not too abrasive at all and are perfect for those rounded edges. If you want a heavier distressed look, you may want to use traditional 220 grit sandpaper on the edges.
And don’t worry about how gray it is after sanding, once you vacuum away the sanding dust and seal, it will turn back to a beautiful, sleek black.
Seal
To seal, I chose my go-to sealer for furniture, Clear Coat in satin.
To prevent the ghosting you can get on darker surfaces when you run your finger across it, add a tiny bit of paint to your sealer:
I used the blue sponge applicator to apply it:
You can see where I already did the bottom shelf.
I really had to squeeze my hand and the sponge down into those side pockets to seal the inside…
The after
Here is how this interesting piece turned out!
I feel like black paint can make any piece look sophisticated.
Even an old magazine table!
Caviar is a perfect, true black.
We are reading less magazines these days, but this could still be great to put beside your favorite chair to hold a small laptop or iPad, maybe?
Maybe your crochet project? Secret chocolate stash?
Although I wasn’t initially that excited about this one, I love how a simple, classic black brought it to life!
Don’t forget my friends are sharing makeovers today too!

Whoo Whoo, it is sexy in black!! That turned out really good, I love it in black! I haven’t painted any thing black in a long time, but I love that tip about adding a little black paint to your top coat so you don’t have the trouble with the ghosting! Enjoy your Vacation!
Christy says
Thank you, Mary! Black is such a treat to paint with after using so much white lol. We are really enjoying our trip, thank you! XOXO

Christy, in all honesty I did not think this piece would turn out at all. I thought you might be grasping at straws! I just didn’t see it happening! However… I love this. You really are amazing!

Beautiful job! It’s an interesting piece. Well worth the effort! (And I’ve written down your tip about tinting the clear wax for future reference. And just to clarify, this is the chalk paint, not Silk, right? 🙂
Christy says
Thank you, Cyndi! Yep, this is chalk paint. XOXO
Addie says
Nice redo!!! Those shoes have had more “late night coming home” dates than i’ve ever had!!! Kick ’em off girl and throw that purse there!!!
I always love the black finishes best!!! So classy. AND what a great idea to have a “lap top/tablet holder”!!!….you may be starting something!!!! I like it.

Bonnie Hipps says
I never thought of painting anything black as I guess I was scared of it. I have a piece with the bottom part boards into a v. I assume to hold books. I am gonna paint it black now that I saw this. You never fail to amaze me and though others I have followed I only go to once in a while I have followed you all along. Happy vacation my friend. Hugs
Christy says
Aww that means so much, Bonnie! Thank you!! I truly appreciate you! I love a simple black makeover…so much easier than white and it hides all the imperfections! XOXO
Dixie Lee says
When I was a kid we had a magazine table just like this. Mom eventually painted it a sort of sage green. Wonder what happened to it when the house was sold? The shelf was a great place to leave a book when one was in the middle of reading it. Anyhow, that table would be about 70 or more years old now… Thanks for the blast for the past….
Christy says
Oh fun! I too often wonder what happened to items I remember from when I was young. Glad this could bring back some memories! XOXO
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says
I love the character of this one. So glad you kept the sides! 😍xo
Christy says
Thank you, Nancy! I wasn’t very excited about this one, but I do love it now! XOXO
Janet says
Wow, that turned out great! I also didn’t feel much hope for this table-magazine tables are kind of ‘done’ nowadays, but this one is beautiful and very functional. Perfect place to slip a tablet or even small laptop. As always, well done!
Christy says
Thank you, Janet! I honestly wanted to pass on this when my friend was giving me a few things with it, but I didn’t have the heart to leave it behind. I’m so glad now that I didn’t! XOXO
Cecilia says
Yes, black was a good choice for this table! Looks so chic. I agree….it would make a awesome place to stash the iPad.
😊Cecilia
Christy says
Thanks, Cecilia! Yes, perfect for an iPad! XOXO
Shirley says
I guess I’m one of the very few because I love magazines and have them coming out my ears..lol! I also have magazines is numerous racks, stacked on and under tables and anywhere else I can find to put them! Sometimes I would much rather pick up a magazine and read it than browsing the internet. Guess it’s my era, who knows but I keep ordering them and doubt I will ever stop..lol!
Now on to this absolutely gorgeous magazine table..omg what a beauty! I thought you were going to go white with a stencil but I’m so happy to see this black unit and of all colors, caviar is my all time favorite so I can only say I am totally loving this piece!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Shirley!! I don’t buy magazines as often as I used to, but I have a ton that I can’t seem to part with lol! XOXO
Kathryn Buckland says
Wow! That was unexpected. I didn’t think it would look that different but it sure does. I see these frequently but always pass them up. I won’t from now on!. Great job as always.
Christy says
I’m so glad you like it, Kathryn! The black paint really worked magic on it for sure lol! XOXO
Karen says
I love what you did with this piece… reminds me of when I was young, one of my Aunts had this furniture in her house in New Jersey. This is my first time looking at your redo’s.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Karen! I’m so glad you stopped by! This is definitely reminiscent of days gone by! XOXO
Marietta Walker says
I love this table. It is rich and beautiful–now that you painted it. It just has so much character and who doesn’t love blue? You did it again.

Christy says
Thank you so much, Rose! XOXO
Karen says
I was expecting a transfer, but it still looks great, (and I’ll cut you some slack since you’re trying to relax on vacation)! I think it would be cute in the entry as a place to put mail, keys in a bowl, and maybe a fold up short umbrella , ready to run out the door!
Enjoy the rest of your time on vacation.
Christy says
Ha ha thank you, Karen! It would be perfect by the door! XOXO
Jen @ Girl in the Garage says
