Welcome back, amazing friends!! I’ve got the sweetest white painted hutch you ever did see to share today as my contribution to this month’s Furniture Fixer Upper party!
My friends have their own furniture flips to share with you today as well, so be on the lookout for their projects at the bottom!
This is the first piece in my brand new Spring of 2022 Haul:
This hutch was a steal at $40! Plus, I had a full punch card for the Goodwill which gave me an extra 20% off!
I chose to make over this piece first for two reasons. The first being that it takes up the most space, so getting it done gives me more workspace for the rest of my treasures. And second, it’s already sold!
I mentioned to my sister that I had found a hutch last week, and she said that her MIL had been on the hunt for one. I shared a picture and it was SOLD! She had recently purchased a white dining table and chairs, so she just wanted a simple white makeover.
I don’t often do custom work, but a simple white I can definitely do, plus she’s family! I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love!
CLEAN
I started this makeover with a good cleaning using White Lightning which is a degreaser and deg osser as well…
Luckily, this hutch wasn’t too dirty! I swapped out my dirty water for clean water and gave it another wipe down to rinse any residue. Gloves are recommended.
Fill Holes
I had plans to ditch the dated hardware, so the drawer holes needed to be filled. I used Dixie Mud for that:
I overfilled the holes a bit and allowed the mud to dry overnight. The next morning, I sanded the mud smooth with 220 grit sandpaper:
After vacuuming up any dust, it was time to get to work!
Slick Stick
For this hutch, I planned to use Dixie Belle’s Silk Mineral Paint in Salt Water. The Silk requires some extra prep for adhesion and you have two options:
- Sand all surfaces to add some grip
- Apply Slick Stick
I usually sand, but I decided to go with option two and apply Slick Stick instead. It is usually used to help paint adhere to non-porous surfaces like laminate, glass, metal, etc, but it can also be used in this instance in place of sanding!
I gave all surfaces one coat and waited two hours per the recommended instructions.
Then, I applied a second coat:
I allowed that to dry overnight.
Paint
This is the fun part…paint!
I gave everything a coat of Silk in Salt Water using my favorite angled brush:
If you prefer a straight brush, the regular mini is fantastic too!
The coverage with this paint is really fantastic, and I could almost get away with one coat, but I let that dry for two hours and then gave it another coat. Silk requires a longer dry time between coats than chalk paint since it dries from the top down.
No topcoat needed!
Because Silk Mineral Paint has a built-in topcoat, there was no need to add a sealer! Silk dries to an eggshell sheen. I already had to scrub away marks left by something I dragged across the surface, and it cleaned right off with just a little water!
See all 30 Silk colors available in my shop HERE!
Good bye glass
Although the glass on this piece was lovely, it also dated it.
My sister’s MIL also wanted closed storage for the top, so I replaced it with beadboard that I cut to fit using my Ryobi jigsaw:
The After: White Painted Hutch with Beadboard
Here is how this pretty lady turned out:
As you can see I opted not to distress this time.
Silk paint is more for a clean, crisp look, but it can be distressed as well with a bit more effort than regular chalk paint.
The inside is where all the pretty really is!
Because the back of the beadboard panel was brown hardboard, I opted to cover it with one of my favorite fabrics that I had on hand.
I attached the fabric with matte Mod Podge, brushing it on like a glue:
And of course the best part is this gorgeous Beauty of Life by Redesign transfer I added to the back:
I don’t carry this one as it is an older transfer, but any French transfer will do like this one HERE since it can be cut apart and used on a couple of projects.
This one had a small area that had stuck to the backing of the transfer:
So, I couldn’t really use it on a project where the transfer would be the main focus, but it was perfect to add as a surprise at the back of this cupboard!
I added the same black and white mini-check fabric to the drawers:
See how I line drawers with fabric in the video below:
If you have trouble viewing, find it on YouTube HERE.
The new hardware all came from Hobby Lobby. These are one of my favorites that I use quite often:
I used them on the top two cabinets as well as the lower cabinets.
The drawers got a pretty coordinating pull:
As for the compartment below, I chose to keep that stained since it was in really great condition:
I am so pleased with how this pretty lady turned out and I hope you like it too!
What do you think about the clean look? Or should I distress it a bit?
Don’t forget to check out what my talented friends are sharing today as well:
I hope my sister’s MIL loves it!
Here’s another piece I did for her last year:
See it how it turned out HERE!
And that is the first piece completed from my brand new haul!!
I’ll be back on Tuesday with this dated mirror since I had a couple of people interested in this one!
Have a fabulous weekend!!
UPDATE! The mirror is complete and ready for its big debut HERE!
XOXO,
Don’t Miss a Thing!
If you like what you see, there are several ways to follow along!

No way does that look like the same hutch. I love it just like it is without distressing. I would have to leave the doors open on the top to showcase the pretty transfers. Wonderful job and have a great week-end.

Christy says
Thank you, Lorrie! No sealer required! It’s a little more prep up front, but worth it in the end! It’s awesome! XOXO
Niki says
The overall cabinet is not my style, but it never ceases to amaze me how you go from something that I wouldn’t l give a first look to let alone a second, to something that is such an eye catcher! I really like the addition of the black and white gingham.
Christy says
You are the sweetest, Niki! Thank you!! XOXO
Amanda says
BEAUTIFUL! I love it!
Christy says
Thank you, Amanda! XOXO
Marcie Lovett says
No doubt she’ll love it, Christy! So bright and fresh, and the little surprises inside, anyone would be happy to have it now. I’m sure it would have sold quickly in the booth, too, but sometimes it’s fun to know where your treasures end up 😊
Christy says
Aww thank you so much, Marcie! I’m kind of sad it won’t be heading to the booth because it would have been really fun to stage it in there, but yes…I know it will be in good hands where it’s going! XOXO
Ashley says
Christy! Another one outta the park! ⚾️ I think you should distress. It’s beautiful, even if you don’t. Or, perhaps ask your sister’s MIL how she’d like it. Love the gingham. ❤️
Christy says
Thanks so much, Ashley!! I think I will ask her and see…I’m surprised I thought not to distress it at all as that is usually my favorite look!! XOXO
Emma says
So beautiful!!! I have a hutch just like that I am re-doing, I would like the top storage to be visible. Do you have any ideas/suggestions for updating the glass?
Also, could Slick Stick be used with BOSS on mahogany furniture?
Thank you so much for sharing your work!
Christy says
Thank you, Emma! In my kitchen, I replaced the wood panels in a couple of my kitchen cabinets with plexiglass instead of real glass as it was more cost effective and I could cut it myself with a tool I bought at Home Depot. It is available in sheets and looks just like glass! And yes, if you plan to use Silk, Slick Stick can be used in place of sanding. You would Slick Stick first, then BOSS, then paint, allowing a day of dry time in between each. XOXO
Emma says
Thank you so much! I really appreciate you taking the time to give me some great advice. I put in an order from your shop today and cannot wait to make some beautiful changes to my home. Take care!

Leticia Beam says
Omg.. so very beautiful and I love love the inside!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Leticia!! XOXO
Mary King says
Love it! I love both painted and painted and distressed. I love the two nice surprises when you open the cabinet doors. I would probably say leave it as it is and that way the interior can stand out even more. Love those pulls! 😉
Christy says
Thank you, Mary! I decided to do just that…leave it as is. We delivered it today, and her new owner was very happy! Enjoy the rest of your weekend! XOXO
Susan says
I like how it turned out! Very pretty! I love white beadboard.
Q: why no handle on the center door on the bottom?
Also, since it’s staying in the family, now you have visiting rights, something you’d never have if a stranger bought it. 😁And while it would have been fun to stage it for your booth, you would have had to immediately unstage it because it would’ve sold so quickly! Just think of all the work you saved! 😂
Christy says
Thank you so much, Susan! The center door is stationary, and it did not have a handle on it previously, so I didn’t add one, but you certainly could. And ha ha…you might be right about that…I don’t think this would have lasted too long either! XOXO
Dalila says
Wow, looks so much better! The fabric does wonders for the piece, too.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Dalila! XOXO
Sue H Mellette says
Beautiful makeover! What a difference you made with the paint finish, the lovely transfer, and the black and white checked fabric. I would keep it just as you finished it. Well done! Enjoy your weekend.
Christy says
Thank you, Sue! We just delivered it today, and she was very happy, so it will stay as is! Enjoy the rest of your weekend too! XOXO
Robin says
A real country sophisticated piece. Did you take off the back in order to place the stencil? And, did you paint the inside of the upper cabinets first before painting the rest of it?
Christy says
Thank you, Robin! I did not remove the backing. This transfer came in two pieces, so I was able to place one above the shelf and one below. There was a shelf support ledge across the back so that worked out very nicely! And I did start with the inside first. 🙂 XOXO
Marti says
This is my absolute hands down all-time favorite of all your redo’s!!!!! It has so inspired me, I will FINALLY redo the non-matching chest of drawers in our bedroom. I need the storage space but NOTHING has inspired me until seeing this scrumptious beauty!! I want the same finish as you have described. PLEASE don’t do any distressing to your beautiful work!!
Christy says
Aww yay! Thank you so much, Marti!! I love that you are feeling inspired!! And I decided not to distress. Have fun with yours!! XOXO

Petra says
Christy, this would have to be one of my faves of yours 🙂 just in love with it! I love the b&w gingham and the transfer as a surprise inside the cupboards. I say don’t distress the piece because you have those lovely handles/knobs that are distressed. Just a totally gorgeous piece that’s come up like a vision in white. Have a lovely weekend xo
Christy says
Aww yay!! Thank you, my friend!! I was so tickled seeing this one come to life! I hope you had a wonderful weekend! XOXO

Cecilia from Georgia says
Bland to Grand! You gave me the push I need to finish a piece similar to this beauty! I have the Slick Stick on it and haven’t had the urge to finish it….now girlfriend, I gotta get it done. Love the extra touches with your transfers and fabric in the drawers, but I don’t want to add to much to it so I can put a reasonable price on it. I love how you give your furniture personality! Have a wonderful Spring weekend!
Christy says
Thank you, Cecilia! Oh yes, now you gotta get it done ha ha! It will be nice to have the space back that it is currently taking up, I’m sure. At least that is always how I feel ha ha! Enjoy your week, my friend! XOXO
