Hello amazing friends and welcome to Trash-to-Treasure Tuesday!! Today is one of my favorite days of the month because not only do I have a thrifty makeover for you, so do four of my favorite blogger friends! This month we are welcoming my dear friend, Denise from Salvaged Inspirations, to our group! Be on the lookout for my friends’ makeovers at the bottom.
I shared a peek of today’s makeover on Thursday:
But that’s not all I’m sharing today!
I bought this Windsor chair specifically to go with this table:
I actually made this over last January as part of my first thrifty haul of the year. I found this table on clearance at the thrift store. It had a bum gate leg, so I removed the huge leaves and gave it a brand new look with the help of a stencil:
You can revisit this first makeover HERE if you like. I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
I thought it turned out quite pretty, but it just sat in my booth for most of last year.
So, I brought it home and started the hunt for a chair to go with it to turn it into a set. When I came across this chair at the DAV for $15 while shopping with my sister, I knew it would work since the legs had similar lines.
First, here is how these two pieces look now:
Like the secretary desk, I had a hard time picturing this chair in any other color than black.
This is Caviar by Dixie Belle. It is a perfect, true black.
It probably would have done fine with one coat, but I gave it two just be sure I got any spots that I missed. I decided not to sand or distress this time. (Shocking, I know.)
I sealed with Dixie Belle’s Clear Coat in Satin:
I don’t know about you, but Lyla loves this makeover. She decided to make herself comfortable and I didn’t have the heart to move her.
Before I could make over the table, I needed to sand away the stencil, or the pattern would show through the new coat of paint. I did that with my rotary sander:
I started with 120 grit sandpaper and then followed up with a quick pass of 220 grit sandpaper. You could also use Citristrip to remove the paint, but I am always too impatient! Be sure to wear a mask while sanding.
At the top of the table in that photo, under the sanding dust, you can barely make out a couple of areas where I went a little deeper sanding than on the rest of the table and those areas ended up bleeding through my first coat of paint:
I applied a coat of Dixie Belle’s BOSS in white and let it dry overnight. That sealed in the bleeding and I was able to continue painting two more coats of Cotton.
I painted the legs in Caviar to match the chair and then applied Prima Marketing’s Beauty of Life transfer to the top of the table:
UPDATE: Some of my sweet French-speaking readers alerted me to fact that it says “shovel” instead of “beautiful”. Part of the transfer had stuck to the backing and I could not figure out where it was supposed to go. It was the bottom part of the “B” in Belle ha ha! I have fixed it and all is right. (Thank you, ladies and kind sir!)
I sanded the table with 220 grit sandpaper before applying the transfer. Transfers are such an easy way to give new life to furniture! This one came in two pieces that I had to line up. I did that by folding the backing to the second one down just a bit and lining up the pattern, before removing the rest of the backing.
I sealed the top of the table with one coat of Clear Coat in Satin first using the blue sponge applicator.
Gator Hide is not recommended for use directly over transfers as it is believed the water repellant properties can cause the transfers to lift. If you want the extra protection the Gator Hide offers, add a coat of Clear Coat in between first.
I sealed the legs with the Satin Clear Coat. You can see here what a lovely sheen it gives the paint:
I thought this transfer was perfect for this table…
This set would make a lovely dressing table or a great desk…
Don’t forget my friends have their own makeovers to share today!
And what happened to the two leaves I removed from the drop leaf table last year?
Some of you may remember I repurposed them both! You can see what they became below!
And I’m excited to knock one more piece off my list!!
If you missed anything so far, you an catch up below:

$5 Thrift Store Chest Makeover
I have the crystal lamp finished, but I’m still on the hunt for a shade. I’m hoping to find one this week so I can share that next week. I’ll be back with another tray from this pile on Thursday:
See ya then!
UPDATE: See how this tray got a light bright new look HERE now!
XOXO,

How do you do it?! One masterpiece after another! Love the set and what a stellar transformation! Beautiful set. (Sets are nice! Good thinking on your part!)
Christy says
Aww you are the sweetest, Robin! Thank you…our completely full garage was great motivation for getting this one done ha ha! XOXO
Tracy says
Very pretty, makes a great set. Just one thing though the ”Pelle” should read ”Belle”.
Christy says
Someone else just mentioned that it said “shovel” ha ha. Part of the transfer stuck to the backing and I couldn’t figure out where it went. It was the lower half of the B lol! I just fixed it. Thanks! 🙂
Mary Kaiser says
BEAUTIFUL!!! That set turned out amazing. I Love it! You are so creative, I can’t believe that you thought to bring home that table and redo it to make a set. I bet it won’t last long in your shop now. Pure Genius!!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Mary!! I hope you are right…fingers crossed!! XOXO
Larissa Haynes says
Love! Striking new look and sweet style.
Christy says
Thank you so much, my friend! XOXO
Petra says
Fabulous pairing. I don’t know why that table wasn’t whipped up in the previous colour, but I’m sure now it will be and that chair is fabulous with it 😀 xo
Christy says
Thank you, Petra! The previous color was always a great seller for me but maybe the stencil was just too busy? I think it will do better this time…here’s hoping! XOXO
Christine says
Let us know how quick it sells now, love it!
Christy says
I sure will…thank you, Christine!! XOXO
Jerri says
This is sharp! Love the black and white. I bet it won’t stay n your booth very long.
Quick question-will they be sold as a set or do you price each piece individually?
Thank you for sharing
Christy says
Thank you, Jerri! Sometimes I price things as a set and sometimes I price them individually depending on what it is. When I do price them separately, the chair always goes first. I think I will keep this as a set! XOXO
Christina in SW FL says
Positively gorgeous!!! Oh my stars, Christy, this set is going to sell so fast! It is gorgeous! Love Lyla on the chair!! The transfer is so right on! You have to share when it sells. 🙂
Have a GREAT week!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Christina! I sure hope so, and I will! XOXO
Gloria Wyssbrod says
Love it they both look great. The transfer looks good on the table top. Like the makeover better.
Christy says
Thank you, Gloria! I prefer this makeover too! XOXO

Caty Langlois says
You made a wonderfull table as always, but i think that you would like to know that you wrote shovel insted of beautiful. Sera t’aies an s at the end beacause it is whit tu. Se write tu seras. I hope i’m not being unpleasant, i thot that you would like to know.
Christy says
Oh thank you thank you thank you, Caty! It is a transfer and a couple small areas of the transfer stuck to the backing. There was only one spot that I could not see where it was supposed to go, but you solved the mystery! It was the lower part of the B in “Belle” ha ha! I just fixed it, thanks to you! XOXO
Wendy says
I love the combination of these 2 pieces Christy, You were right in painting the chair and legs black. Any other color would not have made this combo pop. Great Job again!
Christy says
Thank you, Wendy! I just love the sophistication black paint adds to a piece. Hoping they sell now! XOXO
gwen says
oh christy! it’s hard to believe that table didn’t sell with those soft color and that pretty stenciled top! however, it looks great in black & white with the new transfer and matching chair! you just need the right buyer!
Christy says
Thank you, Gwen! I was surprised it didn’t sell as well. Maybe if I had added a chair to go with it the first time, it might have sold. Oh well…hope it does better this time! XOXO
Margie says
That turned out beautiful, shouldn’t last long in your booth.Where do you get your transfers?
Christy says
Thank you, Margie!! I get most of mine on Amazon, I linked to this one in the post. 🙂 XOXO
Cheryl Atkinson says
Christy, what a beautiful table and chair! I love Caviar. I’m sure this will not be sitting for very long. Thank you for sharing. I wished i had known to sand off a stencil before painting over it. Yikes! See, you are a great teacher. 🙂
Christy says
Thank you, Cheryl! I love Caviar as well! And as for the stencil, I learned that the hard way ha ha! XOXO
Linda C Johnston says
I cannot believe you found a chair with the matching legs to the table! Do you know how extraordinary that is? I could look for years and never have that happen! Great job on these two pieces. I don’t think it could get any better than this. Stunning!
Christy says
I know, right?? I knew it would be perfect the moment I spied it at the thrift store! Thank you so much, Linda!! XOXO
Dianne says
Christy, I love this set! I am partial to black and white anyway but that black is beautiful. I may have to try painting something in it. Also, I love seeing Miss Lyla in your photos. She’s a beauty.
Christy says
Thank you, Dianne! I love black and white together as well! Miss Lyla laid in that chair most of the day lol! She sure is a sweet girl! XOXO
Denise Cox says
Another lovely piece! But I must admit, as someone who favors coastal decor /colors, when I saw that table before it’s transformation, I went, “oooh and ahhhh”.. 😁 😝 😘
Christy says
Thank you, Denise! I really loved the first makeover too, and that pretty blue is usually a great seller for me. Oh well…it will get another chance now! XOXO
Becky says
Classy! I thought it looked great before, but there’s no denying the class the black paint added. Gorgeous!
Christy says
Thank you, Becky! Black always adds a touch of sophistication! XOXO
Debbie in TX says
Nice transformation! The black adds some sophistication to the lines of this set. I like the mirror with it too. Great to see that Miss Lyla approves : )
Christy says
Thanks, Debbie! The mirror is off of the white serpentine dresser I use to stage sometimes…I loved it with the table too. And Miss Lyla loved that chair! XOXO
Marcie Lovett says
They do work well together, Christy! I love a Windsor chair, and the back on this one is more interesting than the usual. I don’t think this one’s going to be in the booth very long (that is, if Lyla lets you move it out).
Christy says
Thank you, Marcie! I really loved this chair as soon as I saw it! And yes, Lyla agrees it’s perfect ha ha! XOXO
Patty says
Perfect, Christy, I’ll take it!! Again, I so wish we lived closer together – I would be one of your best customers!! 🙂 One of these days I’m going to get my order in and paint some of my own furniture – caviar will definitely be in my order – (too many life things happening!). Of course, I would want that sweet little Layla included in the sale! 🙂
Christy says
Ha ha thank you, Patty! I wish you lived closer too, but yes, when things settle down, you can create your own masterpieces! Caviar is definitely a favorite! Sweetest kitty on earth not included lol! XOXO
Addie says
Oh!!!! So much better…very pretty!!! I LOVE all the black pieces you do. I guess I am in a black mode!!! After seeing yours, I am going to paint an old 1940’s sewing machine cabinet in black. I use it as an entry table.
Of course….that will be after the SNOW!!! Yes, snow in Arizona!!!! Stops!!!!
This table set won’t stay long in your booth.
Christy says
Thank you, Addie! I am in black mode too it seems. Black always adds a touch of sophistication! No doubt you’re seeing machine cabinet will be a black beauty! Can’t believe you have snow in AZ!! We want some! XOXO
Susan says
I just love how the new set turned out! However, I thought the table was just gorgeous the way it was! I can’t believe nobody snapped it up. I would have, if I lived nearby! And as I was scrolling down, I just saw the drop leaf desk you just refurbished, and I thought, “this chair would have gone perfectly with that drop leaf desk!” That finish sure looks beautiful! I seem to be very attracted to black furniture, which I didn’t realize till I saw you do that desk. Then I remembered I used to drool over some black furniture they had in the Sturbridge Yankee Catalogue. 😊 Of course, that stuff is pretty expensive. But the finish on yours looks so smooth that it appears factory applied!
Christy says
Thank you, Susan! I really loved the original table as well. It didn’t have a matching chair, so maybe people couldn’t imagine what they would do with a table of that size? I guess we’ll never know. And yes! This chair would have gone magnificently with that desk! Black furniture is always a classic! XOXO
Julie Briones says
These look lovely together, Christy… and that black with the sheen… perfect! Pinned!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Julie! Love that sheen! XOXO
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says
Shovel and beautiful are two totally different meanings!! haha Who knew that tiny little piece of transfer could cause so much trouble. 😉 It’s beautiful…love the black! xoxo
Christy says
Isn’t that hilarious? The “B” turned into a perfect “P” so I never even noticed… and I took five years of French, so I should have seen that lol! My sweet readers saved me! a Thanks my beautiful friend!! XOXO
Janice Holt says
The chair is so lovely. Although I loved the table before it looks good now also especially with the chair. Maybe it will sell for you soon. Your friends DIYs were good but nothing compared to yours but that’s always the case. Thanks for sharing every Tues and Thurs.
Christy says
Aww you are so sweet, Janice! Thank you! XOXO
MrsSW says
Very elegant in black and white, Christy. I love when you don’t distress.
Please let us know when it sells. 🙂
Sheila
Christy says
Thanks so much, Sheila! You know I do love to distress ha ha, but this one definitely didn’t need it! XOXO
Jen @ Girl in the Garage says
This is gorgeous Christy! It’s so sleek in black and white now. It had to have stung a little to sand over the pretty stencil!
Christy says
Thank you, sweet friend! I’m not going lie…it did! I do love the redo though! XOXO
Phyllis says
Belle, belle – what a great combo and what a wonderful idea. This is such a gorgeous set. I am sure it will sell quickly. If I lived nearby, I know where I would be shopping.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Phyllis! I hope it sells this time! XOXO
Kaycee says
What a beautiful new set. I am a huge fan of black and white tables and that chair is perfect for it!
Christy says
Thank you, Kaycee! I love back and white together too! And yes, I love how the chair matches! That was really lucky! XOXO
Robin says
A really, really nice looking set that you’ve created! Sharp and crisp contrast.
Did you use a brush to apply the Clear Coat Satin on the legs or did you use the blue sponge?
Christy says
Thank you, Robin!! I used the sponge on the legs. It’s so much easier! XOXO
Mary says
Wow! Such a beautiful transformation! I don’t know what to say other than you rock!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Mary! I appreciate that! XOXO
Candy says
Absolutely gorgeous!
Christy says
Thanks so much, Candy!! XOXO
Marie says
Wow, this chair and that table were meant for each other, that’s why it didn’t sell. LOL Both pieces look amazing painted black and I’m sure will sell lickety-split for you. I can’t believe how big Layla is getting!
Christy says
I know, right?? What a lucky match! Thanks, Marie! I think I prefer round two myself, so hoping for a quick sale this time! And yes, she sure is getting big!! Imagine if humans grew that quickly?? Ha ha! XOXO
Katherine Iannuzzi says
That black paint is everything!!!! What a stunning piece! I need to find something I can use that paint on now!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Katherine! I love how the black adds instant elegance! XOXO
Robin says
These 2 look terrific together… great job! I am wondering if you have ever done a video or provided other instructions for painting chair spindles without having the brush marks show.
Christy says
Thank you, Robin! A good brush like a Purdy brand brush makes a big difference in minimizing brush strokes and then sanding after really smooths everything out. I don’t have a video, but my good friend, Denise from Salvaged Inspirations, made one and this is how I do it too: https://salvagedinspirations.com/how-to-paint-spindles-without-brush-marks/ XOXO
