I am SO excited about my post today! Not only is this part of the Rock Your Knock Off Tour with some of my favorite bloggers, it’s also a Halloween post! I love Halloween!
This is our second Knock Off tour where we find high end décor and replicate it, but for much less. Right up my alley, right?
This tour Falls at the perfect time to incorporate Halloween ideas.
When I searched for “Pottery Barn Halloween” looking for an idea, I came across this Ghostly Gallery Mantel from Pottery Barn from a few years ago:
I knew right away this was what I wanted to do, but I wasn’t sure I’d be able to pull it off.
My mantel is slate, and there is not nearly as much space between the mantel and the ceiling in my house as there is in the inspiration photo. I decided to go for it anyway.
Here is my Pottery Barn Ghostly Gallery Inspired Mantel:
It gives the impression that ghosts swept in in the middle of the night and rearranged all the photos. I love that.
The coolest part though is Pottery Barn offers these spooky images free for you to download and use in your own Ghostly Gallery! How awesome is that? (Update 10/2016: Unfortunately PB no longer offers these for download. 🙁 )
I printed my photos onto photo paper and found a few large frames in my stash. I found the smaller ones at the Dollar store:
The larger frames got a coat of black spray paint. Then I made the “mats” with poster board:
They worked pretty well! I used heavy-duty adhesive Velcro to attach the finished pictures to the slate and to each other.
Aren’t the photos spooktastic?
Remember these glass dessert dishes I shared on my Facebook page? They were 39¢ and half off since the tags were white, at a nearby Salvation Army.
They were the perfect ingredient for my glass candelabras:
I added a small glass dish I already had but didn’t use to a couple of them to replicate the inspiration candle holders, as well as small glass candle holders from the dollar store. I also added Dollar store moss and black flowers, cut up, to each of them.
I used E6000 glue to attach them to one another. They cost me less than $7 for all five!
The candles weren’t that cheap though. I found those at Homegoods for $3.99 and $4.99, totaling $22. I figure I can use them all year long though!
The inspiration photo has a couple of hats for props. I only used one, this $2 thrift store beauty:
…after a coat of flat black spray paint.
I had originally found a little haunted house at a yard sale that I spray painted black, but I thought it was a little too dark and sort of looked like a big black blob in the middle of the mantel:
See you can’t really even tell what it is. I thought it was a steal at $3, but I ended up using this little house in the cloche that we bought at Target a couple of weeks ago instead:
The books were from my parent’s attic. I removed the bindings from a few older books, and covered a few that I didn’t want to damage, with faux aged paper from Michaels. Then I smacked them with a hot tea bag to add a little age to them.
I think it’s pretty fun.
And a great knock off just in time for Halloween.
This was my last Rock Your Knock Off project, inspired by Ballard Designs:
Monogrammed Fabric Wastebasket
Knock Offs are always a fun challenge. I had a lot of fun replicating this Halloween Mantel.
Several of my friends will be sharing their knock offs all week long, four more added each day! Check out what inspired them:

Your mantel looks great!! Like it even more than the inspiration!! You rocked it!!
Christy K. James says
Aww thanks, Sue! I’m pretty excited about it. 🙂
Leslie @ House on the Way says
This mantel is too cool, I love it! What an amazing knock-off…perfect!
Christy K. James says
Thanks so much, Leslie! It was fun to put together. 🙂
Lory at Designthusiasm says
This is fabulous, Christy!! Well done… 🙂 It looks just like the original, maybe even better. What I love is that it looks Halloween, but it also looks really pretty. I love the use of the layered dessert cups and the vintage books. I love the color palette, as well, keeping to black and neutrals rather than “bang’ em over the head obvious” black and orange. Nice job.
Christy K. James says
Thanks so much, Lory! I like the black and neutrals also. I usually go very traditional using the orange and black, but this was a nice change. 🙂
Shanna Gilbert says
This turned out so cute Christy! I love the pictures that you chose and stacking those dishes on top of each other was perfect!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Shanna! The pictures were available for free to download from Pottery Barn. I thought that was pretty awesome of them. 🙂
Marie@The Interior Frugalista says
That is an awesome Halloween knock-off Christy! Love the DIY thrift store/dollar store candleholders too. I must remember the tea bag trick for aging paper.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Marie! You can totally tell they are dessert dishes when you know that’s what they are, but at first glance, they look pretty ornate. I had a ball putting this together. 🙂
Wendi @ H2OBungalow says
You are so creative! Love your knock off gallery girlfriend! Awesome and spooktacular!
Christy K. James says
Thanks so much, Wendi! XO
Paula@SweetPea says
I think your mantel looks even better than the PB inspiration. How in the world did you get those spooky pictures to hang on that stone? It’s great that PB offers them for anyone to print. I think my favorite part of your mantel is the candelabras that you made using the dessert dishes. You’ll be able to use those for other holidays as well. This is definitely a spooktacular mantel!
Christy K. James says
Thanks so much, Paula! I used heavy duty adhesive Velcro. The bigger frames have a little weight to them, but the smaller ones are plastic and light as a feather. We’ll see if they stay up till Halloween. 🙂
Krista @thehappyhousie says
Such a great knockoff Christy- I could hardly tell which one was the “original”…in fact, yours looks even better!! Love the books with the covers torn off. I will have to give that a try!
Christy K. James says
Aww thanks! I hated to “destroy” perfectly good books, but these have been out at several yard sales and keep being put back in my parent’s attic when they don’t sell. SO, I guess I shouldn’t feel that bad, nobody wanted them anyway!
Linda Petersen says
I love it! Really cooler than the original~~~!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Linda! I had a ball putting it together. 🙂
Suzy says
That is super cute Christy! You’re so inventive and clever. I have some dessert bowls just like that but it never occurred to me to use them for anything but icecream! Nice work! Mimi x
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Suzy! I was looking around one of our thrift stores for something to use as the candlesticks, and happened to come across a shelf that must have had 40 of these. Maybe they were used in a wedding or something? Lucky find for me 🙂
Therese @ Fresh Idea Studio says
How spooky & cool Christy! You your that KnockOff, lady. I love it!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Therese! Just spooky enough to be fun too 🙂
Amanda @ Dwelling in Happiness says
This is so amazing! I LOVE how you got the picture frames to hang sideways. Totally reminds me of the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland. 🙂 Great Knock off!!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Amanda! The frames all rearranged is what I loved about the PB inspiration photo. Just spooky enough 🙂
Sharon Hines says
What a great idea! I always love looking at Pottery Barn’s halloween vignettes. You rocked your Knock Off, perfectly capturing the spooky essence.
Christy K. James says
Oh my gosh, PB has the best Halloween vignettes! This was my favorite because it really had the spooky factor. 🙂
Julie at Being Home says
LOL! That is an awesome and freaky mantel! Love it!
Christy K. James says
Ha ha isn’t it fun?? It was really fun to put together! XO
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says
OH my gosh…that is perfectly creepy Christy!!! I love it!!! I need to get my Halloween game on…I’m bad and don’t do much typically!! 🙂
Nancy
Christy K. James says
This was so fun to do and since I usually decorate quite a bit for Halloween, I figured this would not only be a fun project for our knock off tour, but my mantel is all set for Halloween now. 🙂
Jen @ Girl in the Garage says
Christy you had such a great vision for this challenge and it came out amazing! How cool is it that you could download the same images for free?! And I like your haunted house in the cloche better… 😉
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Jen! I love that they offer the images for download too! 🙂
Julie says
Your mantel looks fantastic! I love the candlesticks that you made, and the aged books are perfect. The art is really fun, and the haunted house in the cloche works well. (I have a hard time finding things that fit inside the cloche just right.) You did a great job on for a great price!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Julie! I had so much fun putting this together. I appreciate your kind words! XO
Birgit says
The mantel looks fabulously spooky! I love what you did with the picture frames and I think this is also a great idea for arranging them even without the Halloween theme. Oh and thanks for the link to the haunted family photos from Pottery Barn!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Birgit! That’s the perfect description…fabulously spooky! PB rocks for sharing their photos 😉
Christy @ Our Southern Home says
Thankfully for us your creativity is endless!! What a fun mantel!!! LOVE!~Christy
Christy K. James says
Aww you’re sweet, Christy! Thank you! 🙂
Cecilia says
I remember seeing that mantle in the Pottery barn catalog and wanted to try to replicate it. Never did. Love yours! Inspires me all over again!
Christy K. James says
I fell in love with it the moment I saw it, but thought it would surely either be too much work or too expensive to replicate. It turned out to be pretty simple and inexpensive. 🙂
Tami @ Curb Alert! says
Holy Cow you did such a great job executing this! Such a great mantel!
~Tami
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Tami! I am pretty excited about it. 😀
andi says
I know I’ve said it before, but DANG you’re a genius!! I love it! I can’t wait to have a mantel so I can totally copy you. 😛
andi
Christy K. James says
Is it not the coolest Halloween mantel there ever was?? I can say that without sounding boastful because it wasn’t my original idea, right? (But I really did rock it ;))
Tammy says
I love how you did your mantel.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Tammy! Just spooky enough 🙂
Julie @ Southern Wild Design says
Ok, Christy, this is super cute! My first thought was “oh, look…she found some instant ancestors.” This is what I call those photos that you (sadly) find in antique stores. Then I saw the dessert cups…my mom had those. What a clever and brilliant idea to stack them! Fabulous! All in all…super cute. ~Julie
Christy K. James says
Ha ha the photos are available for download from PB. Isn’t that cool? I think It would have been very creepy to have actual old photos up there! SO glad you like it. It was fun to recreate! XO
April Hoff says
Eeeeek! This is so spooky {and awesome}! Love it!
Christy K. James says
Thanks, April! It was so fun to do 🙂
ColleenB. ~ Texas says
Now that is one great looking mantel arrangement of which is good enough to be shown in a magazine. Wonderful job.
What came to my mind was to also have some faux spider webbing along with some black rubber spiders come crawling down.
Christy K. James says
Oh yes, love the webbing idea with the spiders. I might have to add that! Thanks for the super sweet comment! XO
Tania says
Wow, it looks great! I love the candle sticks you made!
Tania
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Tania! Maybe I can use them somewhere after Halloween too 🙂
Dria says
OMG Christy! I want that whole set up! I wish you lived closer and would come over and do this in my house 🙂 I love Halloween so much but haven’t had the time to do any fun scary decorating this year! You did an incredible job!
Christy K. James says
Aww thanks, Dria! Your Owl wreath blew me away too. 🙂
Malia says
