The pillow I made was 20″ wide X 16″ tall. Any measurements included in these instructions are based on this pillow.
I made my pillow form about an inch smaller all the way around. It’s bulk will still fill the finished pillow in nicely. If you prefer to use a ready made form, just skip those steps.
- I started with a sheet and a pillow we were no longer using.
- Cut the pillow and remove the insides.
- Cut the pillow casing to size.
- Cut the insides to size.
- Pin edges.
- Sew closed. Free pillow form!
- Love these tools for cutting fabric!
- Cut “envelope’ closure. This is for the back. Two pieces that measure 2/3 of total width so they overlap. Sew finished edge down one side of each.
- Cut front piece. Width should be 1/4 inch wider than pillow form on either side. Cut length 2X width. If you want pleats all the way down, add more length. Create pleats spaced 1 inch apart and pin in place.
- Continue pleats. I did 2/3 way down. Baste along edge to hold in place and remove pins.
- Insert ribbon under last pleat and pin in place. This piece is 12″.
- Cut two strips 2″ X 40″ for ruffle.
- Zig zag each long edge.
- Sew basting stitch down the center of each strip.
- Holding basting stitch, push fabric down to create ruffle.
- Pin to pillow from top of pleats to bottom of last pleat. I attached mine 6″ from either side.
- Sew ribbon down center of ruffle attaching ruffle to pillow. Ribbon should be the length of your pillow + 12″.
- Tie a pretty bow.
- Pin front to back with right sides together.
- Cut corners to get a nice sharp edge.
- Seal edges. (I just zig zag stitch it.)
Now just turn your pillow right side out and insert your pillow form. Voila!
Pretty…and FREE!
