Sad News, but Don’t be Sad

Lyla and Lucy

I always want this blog of mine to be a place of joy, but I’m afraid I have some very sad news.

Unbeknown to us, one of our kitties was very sick when we got her. I took them both for their first well-check yesterday morning and although there were very few signs that were apparent to us, it turned out that Lucy was very anemic and had jaundice. We were cautioned by our vet that this indicated a very poor prognosis and that we may have a very difficult decision ahead of us. We took her directly to the emergency vet and stayed there for several hours yesterday while they ran more tests and gave her fluids. They started her on an antibiotic and sent us home hoping that at a 24-hour recheck, she would show signs of improvement. If she did not begin to improve, they were afraid she had a condition called Feline Infectious Peritonitis which is fatal to cats. When I checked on her first thing this morning, she looked terrible. She wouldn’t eat or drink and looked listless. I scooped her up and headed back to the emergency vet. They rushed her in and attempted to get a catheter in her to administer fluids and attempt to stabilize her, but soon after, she stopped breathing. My heart broke. How can you fall so in love in such a short span of time?

Although we are clearly devastated, we don’t want to feel sad about it. We are choosing to acknowledge instead that we gave her the incredible gift of being loved, and boy have we loved on her! She didn’t suffer long and now rests with the angels.

Luckily, what Lucy had is not contagious and Lyla checked out to be very healthy other than a little cold in her eye. She is asleep on my lap as I am writing this. I am still so grateful that we decided to adopt them both.

After sharing the joy of getting them in yesterday’s post, it is so hard but necessary to share this news today. My apologies for the roller-coaster of emotions I’ve flooded you with as you share in my joy and then my heartbreak.

Thank you for all the well-wishes yesterday as I have not had a moment to answer all your wonderful and encouraging comments.

I will not be posting tomorrow, but hope to back and ready to go on Tuesday.

I love you all!! You make me feel blessed beyond measure!!

XOXOXOXO,

  12. I’m so sorry Christy! It’s never easy to loose a beloved pet no matter how long they’ve been with you! I’m glad to hear that Lyla is healthy. I’m sure you’ll bring each other comfort over your loss.

  13. Omg, I’m SO sorry Christy! My sister had a very similar experience with a rescue kitten she adopted…. it’s so sad. Lucy was lucky to have all your love in her time here and I know Lyla is going to be livin’ the life of Riley. Thinking of you and hugs to you my friend. XO

    • Thank you, sweet friend. I’m sorry to hear about your sister’s kitty too. I had no idea they were so fragile. Lyla has been loved on all day for sure. ❤️

  14. Hilary Milner says

Gee, I am so sorry about Lucy. Here I have been thinking Lyla was sick, because I saw that bad left eye in your photos yesterday. Sad for you and your family today.

    • Thank you, Hilary. We went to the vet thinking Lyla was the only one with issues. She’s getting ointment for her eye and we are keeping her close. ❤️

  15. Denise V Cox says

Christy, please take all the time you need to grieve! As far as I’m concerned, our fur children are no different than our human ones! When I had to put my MinPin down in Aug. 2013, I was an absolute mess for a year, and at times still cannot say her name without crying /a tear. I call my Chihuahua ‘Maddie’ ‘ Clarice’ at times, my MinPin’s name.

God Bless you and your family… Your blogging family is thinking… 💐🌹😘

  16. Am so sorry for your loss!

  17. Kimberly Wollmer says

I am so sorry. My senior pup passed away over a year ago, so I know the heartbreak too. Big hugs to you. She was blessed to have you, even if only for a short time.

    • Thank you, Kimberly. We lost our kitty of 20 years two years ago and I balled the very same over this kitty I’ve only known for three days. It’s amazing how quickly they capture our hearts. ❤️

  18. I am so sorry for your loss. Those sweet fur-babies grab our hearts and make it tough to let go. I am glad little Lyla is doing well.

  19. Kathy Coulter says

Don’t forget to include little Lyla as you grieve. She knows…..they always know. Just talk to her and reassure her. So glad you her to continue loving. Years ago when my daughter’s cat fell ill and went to kitty heaven, our old dog Angus knew it. Angus had not been able to get up the stairs for months due to doggie arthritis. But the next morning I found Angus upstairs, ON my daughters bed, which is a rather high up one with a deep mattress. We don’t know how the dog got up there, but she was cuddling my daughter to comfort her. Furry family members bring soul to a home. Bless you, sending hugs.

    • Thank you, Kathy. That is so sweet of your pup reacting like that in your time of need. We have been giving extra love to Lyla for sure. ❤️

  20. I’m so sorry, but that is the risk we take when we adopt rescue animals. They’ve not always had the best start in life and we often have no way of knowing where they came from.
Sending you a virtual hug from England.

  21. Elizabeth Jones says

As a faithful follower of your wonderful creations,
I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your kitty.
They Become a part of our hearts so fast and bring such joy.
I pray you and your family find peace and comfort during this time

  22. Awww! So sorry. Just precious kittens. May she RIP. Like you said, at least she knew love and comfort even for a short time. 🙁

  23. So sad. My heart is with you.

  24. Well I’m sorry about your kitten. That’s so hard. But if it is FIP that is contagious. It is spread through the stool. There is a vaccine for it

  25. Oh Christy, my heart breaks for you! I have had numerous pets and grandpets that have crossed the rainbow bridge so I know well how emotional this is for you. But she knew love and that is the greatest gift one can give! Hugs!!!

  26. Awe. So very sorry fir your loss. I understand about falling in love immediately!! They kinda deserve that tho – in my mind!! She was one of the lucky ones to be loved and cared for. I am glad you have another fur baby to love on. RIP little one…

  27. Christy,
So sorry to hear of your loss of little Lucy. I know how you feel. I had Fluffy for 16 years and lost him last year and still CRY. He was my Baby I didn’t have naturally. You are such a blessing to all your bloggers and have such a wonderful heart and so much excitement when you show us how to paint, find great bargains, etc. I love it when you show video when you go shopping and share with us. I love you and will be praying for you and your family in this time of loss. Keep little Lyla close to your heart.

    • Thank you so much, Jean! I appreciate your encouraging words more than you know. Fluffy was lucky to have you as her human. ❤️

  28. Lorraine Castellon-Rowe says

Oh honey. She was a beautiful fur baby and I’m so glad she had you to love her and take care of her for her short little life. Hugs and love to you and your family. ❣️🤗

    • Thank you so much, Lorraine. She was beautiful for sure and so sweet. We feel blessed that we got to love on her, if only for a short while. ❤️

  29. No need to reply. I lost a kitten just like you did. I was about 10 years old. Noelle because we got her around Christmas time. Very sad. Your Lucy was a beautiful baby who was loved by you for just a short time but she and you are both the better for it. So happy Lyla has a wonderful home and mama. Take care.

  30. Wendy Kronmuller says

Oh I am so sorry for your furbaby loss 💔. She was very loved even if just a short time 🐾

  31. Christy, so sorry for your sad news. Losing a pet is never easy but they do bring us so much joy.

  32. Donna Taylor says

My heart aches for you as I write this, with tears in my eyes. No matter how long we have our sweet fur babies, its hard to loose one. Praying sweet blessings over you…Lucy was blessed to be loved for the short time you had her. Hugs

  33. Dear Christy,
I am sad to hear this, but also thankful that in just a short period of time she was so loved. A blessing that it was not contagious to Lila. My prayers to you & your family. Just sit back & love on that precious little girl

  34. Carole Larsen says

I am so sorry for the loss of your brand new kitty. You did the best you could for her and still have her sister to love for the rest of her life. You are a good person for all you did and do everyday.

  35. Elizabeth K Downes says

My heart breaks for you and your family, and for the little furries too. Yes, you are exactly right. Lucy left this earth knowing she was loved and wanted and that her sissy is in a wonderful place. Perhaps one day you will consider another little friend for Lyla…..Bless you all….you and Lucy are in our prayers…..Liz

    • Thank you so much, Liz. We feel better knowing we gave her as much love as we could. Loving Lyla a little extra today. ❤️

  36. Oh no! I am so sorry to hear this. I am glad she had your family to be with her during her short life. Sending (((hugs))) your way.

  37. Oh Christy, my heart breaks for you and I am shedding tears with you. I’m so thankful that sweet little Lucy was loved and she didn’t die alone. She was indeed blessed in the end. Love to you (and your family – losing a pet affects everyone in the family) and Lyla. You are most definitely in my thoughts and prayers!

  38. ELIZA mapleson says

I’m so sorry for you and your family. Poor little puss

  39. Aaahh Christy,
I am so sorry to hear this news. I am glad Lucy got to have some love and joy in her short life. Think how wonderful it was that she got a family!!! It is also good to hear that what she had wasn’t contagious. Spend your weekend showering Leyla with love….as she is hurting also.
    take care,
    Addie XXXOOO
Time means nothing…those little buggers imprint your heart!!!

  40. Shannon M Taradejna says

I too had to put my shepherd May down yesterday. She was 13 years old. Perhaps our animals crossed the Rainbow Bridge together. Am so sorry for your loss.

  41. So sorry for your loss of the new kitten. She was able to be in a loving family for a short time along with her sibling. You didn’t have much time to love her but she was in a family with abundant love to give. That she was taken in with her sister as a “matched set” warmed my heart. I write this as tears flow, thinking of my own kitty that passed. Lucy will live on through Lyla. Best wishes at this difficult time. Love for a pet lasts forever. ❤️

    • Thank you so much for your kind and encouraging words, Laura. I’m sorry about your kitty too. They really capture our hearts. ❤️

  42. I’m so sorry Christy. You are all in my prayers. It is so hard to lose a fur baby no matter how long or short you have had them.

  43. I am so so sorry for your loss. My heart breaks for you and your family. Although her life was short, she had a wonderful family who loved her.

  44. Oh Christy, I am so very sorry. But sweet Lucy was so lucky to have found you and your family. She was much loved, that’s for sure. 💝

  45. Lisa Messinger says

My heart breaks for you as I read this, Christy. 😿May Lucy romp with her new friends in rainbow heaven.

  46. Jessica Nash says

I’m so sorry for your loss! We can become attached and grow to love them in a very short period of time. I’m glad you still have Lyla to love on. I’m sure she will miss her sister too. ❤️❤️

  47. Condolences on the loss of your sweet kitty. To paraphrase Will Rogers (who made the following statement about dogs), “If cats don’t go to Heaven, I want to go where they go.” Personally, I believe we will be reunited with our beloved pets. Here’s hoping that’s some consolation for you and your family.

  48. KAY LAPLANTE says

    😥

  49. Valerie Yoakum says

I’m so glad you were able to give her so much love in such a short time. My heart aches when I hear of a lost pet, but knowing she is not suffering is comforting.

  50. Karen Hanssen says

    Dear Christy,
I am so very sorry to hear about little Lucy. And yes, I believe it is extremely easy to fall in love so quickly!! (I never even met her and I am crying!) How could you not? They are beautiful. You are right to look at the positive. Lucy had the best love and circumstances when she needed them most. And Lyla will not be lonely. My thoughts are with you and your family.
    Karen

  51. Debbie in TX says

Breaks my heart. I have tears streaming down my face. Please know that I am so sorry and know exactly how you feel. We lost our sweet 16-year-old kitty two years ago, and I still miss her. It’s hard, even though you had Lucy for a short time. At least you filled her life with lots of love til the very end. Hope to see more photos and updates on Lyla in the future as she gets bigger! Lots of love, XOXO

    • Aww thank you, Debbie. They are just so innocent and sweet. I still miss my Holly too. We’re keeping a close eye on Lyla…she has been such a blessing today. ❤️

  52. So sorry for your loss. You and your family are in my prayers.

  53. All of our furry friends are beyond the “Rainbow Bridge” waiting for her. They bring so much richness and love to our lives and we need to remember those times. Thank you for trying to help her. JudyCinNC

  54. Oh, Christy! I am so sorry! It made me so happy yesterday to see the two sweet little sisters … and now this sad news. Little Lucy and Lyla were so pretty together … I hope your remaining baby girl isn’t too lonely for her sister. Having cats of my own, I know how hard it is to lose one … and how quickly you can fall in love with a kitten! I will say a little prayer for ALL of you tonight!

    • Thank you so much, Lynnie. I appreciate the prayers. We are feeling much better today and yes, crazy how quickly you fall in love with them. ❤️

  55. Claudia Blanchard-Carson says

I’m so sorry to hear about Lucy…I can see that you love your fur babies very much, I’m glad Lucy was with you. You took good care of her and I’m sure she loved you very much, even though it was a short time. I’m a cat lover so I really do understand your heart being so sad.
    I know you’ll be a great mommy for Lula…bless you …

    • Thank you, Claudia. I appreciate that very much. We were blessed to have her, even if only for a short time. Lyla is getting lots of extra love. ❤️

  56. Oh gosh Christy. I’m so sorry. You’ve certainly handled it all in the best possible way.

  57. So sorry, Christy, so hard to lose a pet. Her picture is so precious ❤️

  58. Carlla Limbaugh says

I am so sorry for your loss. I have tears and heartache for you and your family. Lucy knows she was loved and will be at Jesus side watching over you and her sister. I have lost feline friends before and know of the heart ache it causes. Love Lyla to pieces and enjoy her for the rest her life. I love your blog and will continue to enjoy your stories about her and your life together.

    • Thank you so much, Carlla. I don’t think it’s ever easy to say goodbye. Lyla has been getting extra lovin’ for sure. ❤️

  59. Christy,
I am so sorry for your loss. I do feel your pain and understand what you are going through! It is amazing how we become attached so quickly to our fur babies. Give Lyla a big hug and I look forward to your next post!

  60. I can’t help but feel sad. Those 2 kitties were the cutest. Can’t help but think her sister is going to miss her too. Sorry for your loss when yesterday you had so much joy.

    • Thank you, Dianne. Such a roller coaster of emotions for sure. We are feeling better today and comforted by sweet Lyla. ❤️

  61. 😪so sorry for your loss.

  62. Claudia Blanchard-Carson says

So Sorry I meant Lyla…I’m a bit out of it…broke my foot and I’m not my self today…
Spell check thinking for me, yikes

  63. So sorry for the loss of your beloved little Lucy. I lost three little OLDER than dirt dogs and it is so hard to take. Sympathy to you.

    • Thank you, Connie. It’s never easy to lose these sweet fur babies. You were lucky yours lasted long enough to be older than dirt. I needed that little chuckle. ❤️

  64. Robin Simonds says

No words here to express your loss just a heart felt prayer and a hug sent if needed. 💕🐾🌾🍂

  65. Aww Christy, I’m so sorry.

  66. Christy,
I am a cat breeder for the last 25 years. Not to upset you but FIP is very contagious! Please watch your other kitten closely.
Not necessary to post this as it is just ment FYI.
I am sorry for your loss.

    • Thank you, Marge. I have heard so much conflicting information, but my vet also said to keep a close eye on Lyla. Lucy was severely anemic and I almost believe that was what led to her demise, in which case, Lyla is safe. We are being very cautious though just in case…thank you. ❤️

  67. I’m so sorry that you lost your little Lucy so soon and I am thankful with you that you still have your dear Lyla to comfort you and you her.

  68. Leanne Smook says

Oh my dear. That’s too tragic. We had to put our beloved little black cat Pixxie down 2 months ago. She had heart disease and kidney failure, and though she fought bravely eventually she gave up and it would’ve been cruel to try to keep her with us any longer. We had her for 7 glorious, love-filled years. We miss her every day. My heart breaks for you and I am so sorry for your loss.

  69. I am so sorry! My heart is breaking for you. You are right that we fall in love with these furry little creatures so quickly.

  70. I was asked once why I have pets when you have to let them go as they don’t live as long as us. Didn’t know how to answer at the time, but do now. What is a short time for us, is their entire life. It is about them. That is why we have pets.

  71. I am so sorry Christy. Lucy was a beautiful kitten. She was loved, indeed.

  72. So, so sorry for your loss!

  73. Awe, my heart breaks for you, Christy, sorry for your loss. So glad sweet adorable Lucy found a loving home to get loved on in her final days – take comfort in that. Sending big hugs from Canada. xo

    • Thank you, Marie. That is what has made this easier to take…we are so glad that she had the chance to really be loved by a family of her own, even if only for a short while. ❤️

  74. Avis Nichols says

    Christy,
I am so very sorry for your loss! Please know I will add you and your family to my prays.

  75. Melanie Brooks says

Oh Christy, I an so so sorry to hear this! 💔
I’m a sap, and I am sitting here crying for you. Lucy was so lucky to come home with you and stay with Lyla. She was in the best place possible and I’m sure she knew that. Give Lyla twice the love, and know that your blog family loves and cares for you both!

  76. Sending positive vibes your way. I think all of us have lost sweet pets at one time or another. My Mom called hers her ‘animal children’ and that is how we have felt about ours, they are part of our family. Sorry that you lost one of yours, but glad that your other sweet kitty survived.

  77. Oh, I am so sad for you and for little Lyla, losing her littermate. 🙁 It is true that we come to love these little cuties so deeply and so quickly. As you say, Lucy was well-loved while you had her and she didn’t suffer long.

    • As hard as it was to see her go, we are so thankful that she didn’t suffer long. Lyla’s been getting extra love. ❤️

  78. So sorry to hear this about Lucy. She was very lucky to have y’all for a short time. She is resting and totally pain free now. Lyla has you now to love and cherish her. Prayer for y’all during this time.

  79. I am so sorry about your sweet kitty. Glad that other one is ok. Now you can give her some extra loving.

  80. Catherine Klose says

Oh sweetie. I’m so sorry for the loss of your little fur baby.

  81. Christy, it has to have been a roller coaster of emotions for you as well. I’m so sorry you lost your sweet kitty. At least she knew she was loved and wholly cared for. I hope her sibling thrives. We only have them for a little while, but those fur babies leave a big hole when they leave. Remember, they never really leave our hearts. Big hugs. <3

  82. Catherine Cone says

Love to Lucy. I’m sure she sensed all the loving thoughts we were sending her way, as she passed over the rainbow bridge.

  83. I am so sorry about your kitty. It is very hard to lose a pet.

  84. Ashley Sovig says

Christy, I’m so sorry to hear about Lucy. Your post, about her and her sister when you rescued them, was dear. I’m sorry you had to go through this so early on. Bless….

    • Thank you, Ashley. We are as well, but I’m just glad she didn’t suffer long. We’ve been loving extra on Lyla and that has helped so much. ❤️

  85. How kind you are to have shared this with us Christy…all things are part of God’s plan. Lucy was a very lucky kitty to have had you care for her during her short life. Wishing many blessed years for you with Lyla!

  86. Christy, I am so sorry for the loss of your dear kitty. I am currently a crazy cat lover of 3, and I’ve lost count of how many others I’ve had over the years. They are such a gift and give us so much joy with their sweet and mischievous personalities and they quickly become part of the family. Take comfort in knowing you gave her a wonderful home and lots of love.

    • Thank you so much, Tracy. We are taking comfort in the fact that she didn’t leave this earth without knowing she had a family that really loved her. ❤️

  87. So very sorry to hear this! You are in my thoughts!

  88. Hugs to you.
I love your work!! And your biweekly posts, you are a light to many I’m sure.

  89. 🙁 tears! so sorry! they are soo easy to fall in love with

  90. So sorry about Lucy but what a wonderful gift you gave her during her short life!

  91. Linda Charlton says

    so sorry for your loss

  92. Sending you well wishes and positive vibes…

  93. This is heartbreaking! The feeling is too familiar to our family. We rescued a tiny kitten and named him Aizen Ryatt and had him for a week before he became very lethargic overnight. The vet told us he had Feline HIV and had to be put down as he didn’t get better. I didn’t understand why he came to our lives to leave so soon, but like you, figured he came to be loved for his time on earth. He was sooo loved and is still missed. Thank you for giving Lucy your love and attention. You made her time here on earth the best she could have had. <3 ;(

    • Aww I’m so sorry you had to go through that too. But yes, all we can do is take comfort in the fact that we gave them the best life they could have known. Thank you for sharing that with me. ❤️

  94. Janet Filberth says

    Christy,
I am so sorry about Lucy. But what a wonderful blessing you were in her last days of life.
I’m a hospice nurse, …. I look at this as you served as a “kitty hospice”!
What a wonderful end of life gift you gave this kitty….and she gave you!
    God bless you and yours!!!
    Janet

  95. So very sorry for your loss. It’s obvious that she definitely knew love in her final days. So glad she had a family in her life before her passing.

  96. So sorry for your loss. As a cat mom I know how quickly we become attached to our pets. It was a blessing she had you to love her and fight so hard for her in her final days!

  97. Oh, my heart is breaking. Like you said she spent her last days in loving arms. So, so sorry to hear this.

  98. What cute kitties.

  99. I am so very sorry! She was fortunate to have been loved by you.

  100. Mariah Beaney says

I’m so sorry for you and your precious kitten. My heart goes out to you. I was so happy for you and the kittens when you posted. Just know you did everything you could but sometimes it is not enough. I’m glad you have the other kitten and it is healthy. Anyways, I will be looking forward to reading your blog next week and hoping you feel better.

  101. So sorry Christy. You do get attached to them quickly for sure.

  102. I’m so sorryto hear about Lucy. We had a similar thing. We got two new kittens at work and they both had FIP. One survived for a while but we had to put her down. Cedar is still alive and full of beans! She has to have some medicine butis very active and the customers
    all love her.

    • Thank you, Lori. How wonderful that one of yours survived. We are crossing our fingers for sweet Lyla that she stays healthy as well. ❤️

  103. My heart goes out to you. Thank you for giving Lucy a loving home, and doing the right thing for her in getting her medical help. May she rest in peace, and may she live on in your heart. I have had 7 kitties in my life, and been through almost every disease known to felines, it is very hard to see them suffer, I know too well. God Bless-

  104. Oh Christy, I am so sorry, but as you said, you gave her a very happy time before she left you. Thanks for giving help to the helpless.

  105. So sorry for your loss. You did everything humanly possible for her. I’m sure Lucy felt the love!

  106. So sorry for your loss. I work with a cat rescue in NC. Just keep in mind that there are so, so many kitties out there that need a loving home like yours. In time, maybe you’ll be ready to rescue another one. No need to reply just heal.

    • Thank you, Teri. I appreciate that. This definitely won’t stop us from giving another kitty a loving home in the future. ❤️

  107. So sorry that you lost your sweet kitty.

  108. Cheryl Atkinson says

I’m so sorry Christy. I get attached very easily to animals and you are right, you gave her love. So sorry. Hug on that little Lyla and soon you will feel better.
    Cheryl

  109. Christy, you have my deepest condolences. I know you want to keep things upbeat for your readers, but you are right to mourn this sweet little life cut short, and to let us mourn with you. With FIP there’s no happy ending, so please remember that your adopting Lucy gave her the chance to feel love and security before she died.

Such good news that Lyla is healthy, so you can adopt a brother or sister for her when things get a little more back to normal for you all. I have had cats (and some dogs) my whole life and I volunteer in a cat rescue/shelter here in an Atlanta suburb. I understand what huge holes these little ones leave behind. My heart goes out to you and yours.

    • Thank you so much, Leslie. Bless you for the volunteer work that you do. We definitely won’t let this stop us from adopting another sweet baby in the future. And you are right, it’s hard to share things like this in a place that I consider my happy place, but you all will never know how comforting your kind words have been to me, so I’m glad I decided to share. ❤️

  110. I’m very sorry to hear of your loss of precious Lucy. I don’t read many blogs but thoroughly enjoy yours as the love, kindness, and compassion that you have shows through in what you share and in how you share it. And as a reader I can’t help but smile as you honor our Heavenly Father through your love. Sending you Belated Birthday wishes from a Jersey Girl.

  111. I am so sorry. You fell in love with that precious little baby, because that is what she was giving you. She came into your life for a purpose even if it was for a very short time. Love and enjoy her sister. My thoughts and prayers go out to you.

  112. We had a cat that we loved so much. Taz also had FIP but we didn’t know it. He would hide from us and cry out in pain. Was a sad day when we had to relieve his suffering.

    • Aww I’m so sorry you had to go through that, Brenda. It is heartbreaking. Luckily our little Lucy didn’t suffer long. ❤️

  113. My heart is heavy for you—there are no words for the pain of losing a beloved pet—once adopted or rescued they take a place in our hearts. As you said you gave her the greatest gift of love for her short life. I am happy that Lyla is healthy and there to comfort you.

  114. You are correct. A few days of being loved is better than in a cage. And what she has is lethal. I would get another soon because the kitty is going to be looking for her sister.

    • We were advised to wait on getting another to be sure Lyla is in the clear, but we mostly likely will as soon as we are able. ❤️

  115. Sue Mellette says

So sorry to hear about Lucy. Fur babies are special babies. Layla is blessed to have your family her new family. Enjoy every day with her!

  116. So sorry to hear about Lucy – they do steal your heart very quickly and it’s so hard when you lose them. But as you said she was well loved, snuggled and spoiled during her short life. Thank goodness Lyla is healthy although I’m sure she misses her sister.
    Hugs
    Sue

    • Thank you, Sue. They really do capture our hearts so quickly. We are blessed that we have Lyla…she has really helped. ❤️

  117. Teresa Farrell says

I am so sorry for your loss. I am however glad that she did not pass away in a cold cage. She had warmth and love and someone who in the end did everything to make her well and had all intentions of giving her a great live. God Bless you Christy for your kindness

    • Thank you so much, Teresa. How sad it would have been for her had she not been adopted. We are grateful we were able to show her so much love. ❤️

  118. Karen L Moore says

I am so sorry for your loss. They can sure wrap their little paws around our hearts in a minute.Very grateful it’s not contagious.

  122. Nancy Wright says

So sorry to read about your loss, especially since she was your birthday present:( My heart breaks for you. Over the years I have lost many fur babies to things I never knew cats could get. It’s hard to lose them regardless of how long you have had them. I am glad you still have Lyla and she is healthy.

    • Thank you, Nancy. We rescued our last kitty from a dog’s mouth and she lived to be 20. I never realized they could be so fragile. We have been giving Lyla all the snuggles and that has really helped.

  123. Jan Anderson says

Christy, I’m so sorry you lost your sweet kitten. It is always so hard. Jan

  124. Jacki Gherardi says

    Oh Christy,
I am so so sorry to hear this. Please know I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Obviously you were chosen to love this little one until she returned to her maker. I know in my heart we serve a Savior who is great, and all good things come from Him, according to his plan. It’s sometimes hard to see the plan though! Lyla is still a very lucky girl to have you, just by reading this post I can see your compassion. Love her times two! I hurt for you honey. 💔. JG

    • Thank you so much, Jacki. I know she is playing with the angels right now. Lyla has been getting all the love for sure. ❤️

  125. I’m so sorry about your kitty, Lucy. Your did something wonderful by adopting both kittens and you tried to get her the best care when you found out she was sick. Your loving her made her short time so much better. Hugs,

  126. Patricia Wilson says

I am so very sorry for your loss! Love doesn’t have a time table and our four legged children are precious to us. I know what it’s like for you as I have had several of these devastating losses but know that we will all meet in Heaven someday. My thoughts are all four legged children do go to Heaven and wait for us there. Enjoy Lyla and know that she has a wonderful “forever home”.

  127. Bless your heart! Our animals are part of the family, and a loss of any hurts our hearts. Take time for healing, and know we share your pain. And have you in our prayers!

  128. Aww that’s so sad but as you stated, y’all gave her a home and love in her last days. I’m so sorry. Hugs, Cecilia

  129. I am so sorry Christy. She was such a beautiful kitty and I am so glad she was loved on by your family.
    Many Hugs

  130. I’m so sorry for your loss. I think as soon as we decide they are going to become part of our families, you love them. At the least, she had a little time of being totally loved and with her sister. I have a younger cat that I know I will lose soon to cancer, so I understand your paing.

    • Thank you, Mary, and I’m so sorry to hear about your little one. It is never easy to say goodbye. Just love them as much as you can while they’re here. ❤️

  131. So sorry your kitty didn’t make it. Our animals our part of our family. Wishing you and your family the best.

  132. So very very sad…. my tears were flowing whilst trying to read your post.
Lucy’s a sweet little fur angel now. Bless her & your hearts

  133. Jane Fitzpatrick says

It’s ok to be sad. You loved her and you tried your very best to take care of her.
Prayers for you and your family.

  134. I’m so sorry. It’s amazing how much you can love your little ones! So glad she was loved!

  135. Becky McGraw says

This is heartbreaking. I’m so sorry for your loss.

  136. So sorry. It is devastating to lose a family member – no matter how long they have joined the family. You are now blessed to love Lyla. All the best!

  137. I am sitting here with tears in my eyes. My heart just breaks for you and her sweet little sister. I just can not imagine Willa without Bella. They love each other so much. I hope Lyla does ok I know she will be loved twice as much now. Once again I am so sorry. We fall in-love with our fur babies so fast. Hugs to you!

  138. So sorry for your loss.

  139. I am so sorry..sadly I know how you feel, I just lost my foster fail, I had him since he was
4 weeks old. I just lost him this Monday-he was 3 1/2 years old. I know he’s in a better place, but I still mourn him…blessings and peace to you and your family..

    • Aww I’m so sorry. They really become like your children and it ya so hard to see them go. He was blessed to have had you as his human. ❤️

  140. Deborah Hagwood says

So very sorry to hear about Lucy. She was lucky enough to be rescued by you, being loved and cared for, making this a bittersweet time for you. My heart aches for you, but you have her sister to love twice as much. Take care.

    • Thank you, Deborah. We have no regrets and are comforted by the fact that we loved her as much as we could. Lyla is definitely getting all the snuggles. ❤️

  141. Sharon Austin says

Oh noooo!! My heart breaks for you. Her spirit will live on through that beautiful photo you took of her. Maybe a gorgeous repurposed frame to match it could be a special project to help the healing start.

    • Thank you, Sharon. I was just telling my husband that I am so grateful that I took those precious photos. One will definitively earn a special spot. ❤️

  142. I am so sorry for your loss. Saying goodbye to our furry friends is so hard, but you have a wonderful outlook. Love on Lyla all you can!

  143. May God bless you and your family for giving Lucy a loving home and showing her love and compassion.

  144. Hi Christy,

I’m so sorry you had to go through such a heart breaking loss but thankful that you did share this with us.
Give yourself time to grieve and process all this – we will all be here when you’re ready to come back!

  145. I am so sorry to read Lucy passed away. I am glad you gave her a home, if only for a short time, it was loving and she deserved as much. Keep rescuing!

  146. Sherry Stuifbergen says

I know how you must feel. Bless you for adopting two cats. I know it is early, but go back and adopt another kitten, and make a difference in a poor kitten’s life. There are so many of them to adopt…..Sherry

    • We were advised to wait a few months to be sure Lyla is in the clear, but as soon we are able, we’ll rescue a sibling for her. ❤️

  147. Oh no that’s so sad. Similar happened to us years ago. Its amazing how we can fall totally in love with our little fur babies as soon as we get them. I’m glad you have lovely photos of her. Blessings.

    • Right? I think the fact that we can fall so hard for them just shows how loving and compassionate we really can be as humans. I’m sorry that happened to you as well. I am so thankful for this blog. You guys are the reason I took those photos…so I could share them and for that I am so grateful. ❤️

  148. Christy,

So sorry for your loss. This was a blessing in disguise, that you found out this soon. We had a chocolate siamese that had FIP for six years and never knew. She never showed any signs. When they finally appeared the vet said, she suffered greatly. Take joy in that this new kitty didn’t suffer too long. Enjoy the other one!!!

From one cat mom to another, take care!😻

    • Oh how heartbreaking for you. We are very grateful Lucy didn’t suffer long. Lyla has been such a blessing and is getting all the snuggles. ❤️

  149. Stephanie Carrico says

So sorry for your loss. The sweet girl spent her last hours in a loving home. That’s a wonderful thing for shelter pets. Glad Miss Lyla got a clean bill of health.

  150. I am sooooo sorry.
    JB

  151. I’m so sorry for your loss. We had a similar situation about a year ago. Our young kitten was born healthy, or so we thought. When she was about twelve weeks old she couldn’t use her back legs. She then developed seizures. We had to have her put to sleep. I understand how you feel. I still can’t believe how much we loved her. We still love and miss her. Her name was Sunny. The sweetest thing ever. Again, I’m so sorry.

    • Thank you, Amy. I’m so sorry you had to experience that. They are so easy to love and both of our kitties were blessed to have had us to love them. ❤️

  152. I am so sorry. I understand. We rescue (and keep) and have lost many. We are faced with the possibility of euthanizing one now, whose seizures cannot be controlled. You did all you could. Sending hugs.

    • Thank you, Cindy. Bless you for all that you do to give kitties a fighting chance. I’m so sorry you are faced with such a difficult task. My heart is with you. ❤️

  153. So sorry

  154. So sorry 😢🙏

  155. Lisa Frearson says

Oh, I’m so sorry. She was such a little beauty. How lucky she was to have become part of your “family” and to know love till the end of her much too short life. 💔

  156. My heart aches for you and your family for your loss, in Lucy’s short life however you and your family gave her a family who loved her so so very much. ❤️❤️❤️

  157. Rebecca - Knoxville, TN says

What a whirlwind of emotions for your family. So much is out of our hands. Lucy was obviously very loved and has a special place in your heart. Hugs.

    • Thank you, Rebecca. A whirlwind is right…we are feeling much better today though, knowing it was out if our hands and we did all we could do. Lyla has really helped too. ❤️

  158. I’m so sorry about Lucy. I’m a cat owner, too. It’s heartbreaking to lose one. Just wanted you to know that I’m thinking of you.

  159. Oh Christy, my heart hurts for you all. But yes, you gave her the gift of love, it was the best thing you could give her. Take a bit to regroup. I’m sure Lyla will need some extra cuddles, too.

  160. I’m so sorry to hear about Lucy. It’s sad when we connect with the little fur babies and then find out they have medical issues that can’t be fixed. Sending hugs and prayers your way. ❤️❤️❤️

  161. Judy Kulmaczeski says

So sorry to hear this about your kitty. I lost 2 of my baby kitties long ago and I still miss them.

    • Thank you, Judy. It’s never easy to lose a fur baby, but especially so when it’s so unexpected. I’m so sorry you had to go through that with your own sweet babies. ❤️

  162. Sharon Coffman says

I’m so very sorry about little Miss Lucy. I lost a beloved pet just a few weeks ago, so I know the heartache. I read your post about getting them. Thankfully, she was surrounded by such love that your family gave her.

  163. Oh my goodness Christy, I am so so very sorry. I am in tears, that is more than sad. I think I am going to wait a little longer before I take the step as I can see by my reaction to your saddest news my heart is not healed enough to do that. Thank you for your encouragement, it meant a lot to me. I am so happy that you have Lyla to love on an share your tears with. Bless you Christy always, Hugs to you and Lyla, JoeyAnn.

    • Thank you so much JoeyAnn. We were so heartbroken as it all happened so quickly. We don’t have any regrets at all though and feel blessed that we were able to show her so much love. I hope this doesn’t stop you from giving a little a chance. We are feeling much better today and Lyla has really helped. ❤️

  164. Sorry for your loss.

  165. Oh Christy my heart breaks for you and your family. I agree with you that sweet Lucy was blessed with lots of love and affection from you and your family. My prayers are with you, your family and sweet Lucy. Hugs

Sorry to hear about your Lucy. She was so sweet looking. I see a dog or a cat and I fall in love immediately. I do believe that all fur babies go to heaven.

  170. Oh, Christy,
I am so very sorry for you. She looked like a sweetheart too! She had a very sweet Mommy on earth and now has so many earthly Mommies now! I hope your sadness is comforted and that Lucy smiles down on you, letting you know how healthy she is, and awaits your arrival! (In which I hope is a very long time from now!)

Rest In Peace sweet Lucy 🐾

  173. I know Lucy was so happy to have family. Thank you so much for adopting her and her sister Lyla. Give Lyla some extra big hugs and take some time to grieve. I have lost some furbabies and I know it is very difficult. God bless you and your family.

    • Thank you, Denise. Lyla has really helped us all. We are very grateful we were able to give her sister so much love. ❤️

  174. Elizabeth Marchak says

Christy, So sorry to hear about your kitty. You should take comfort in knowing you did all you could for her. Also, writing about it is part of the grieving process and useful knowledge for the rest of us. Take best care of yourself.

  178. Thank you Christy for the risk of such deep love for these little ones. Thank you for the deep compassion you showered on Lucy, I’m sure she felt your love and care. May God’s arms of love support you as you cherish Lyla all the more and help her through her grief!

  179. Aww ,, I’m sorry 😐 about yr little girl.. Bless her little heart 😇

  180. I just read your post from yesterday, and I am sorry you lost one of your beautiful little fur babies.

    • Thank you, Mary. She was such a sweetie. We feel so blessed to have been able to show her so much love in her short time with us. ❤️

  181. Christy, I’m so sorry! I agree, it’s was so wonderful that you adopted both so that baby was loved when it needed it the most! You are an awesome person! Thinking of you today !

  182. I adopted two sister kittens several years ago, and one of them developed FIP, so I know what you went through, and the pain of loving and losing. I’ve adopted two more kitties, but this first one, my long haired calico rules our domicile like the queen she is :-). If we’re to know the joy of receiving love, we must also be prepared to experience the heartbreak, though we rarely are. It IS comforting somewhat, to know we gave them much love in the short time we were allotted with them.

    • Thank you for sharing your story, Bobbie. It is reassuring to hear that the other sister lived on to be healthy. And yes…they were lucky to have known love. ❤️

  183. Kim Bontrager says

I’m so so sorry Christy. Those precious, furry 4 legged children, just take up residency in our hearts so quickly. 😔

  184. I am sorry to hear this, Christy. It is so difficult to lose a furry family member. I’m glad Lucy had a chance to experience love and caring. Take care…

  185. Hansy Ruiz from NC says

  186. Kathleen LeCorre says

Dear Christy – My heart is aching for you and I will send a special prayer for your beloved kitty. They are so precious that it really doesn’t matter how long you have them it hurts just the same. My daughters rescued a cat years ago that we had only a week but I still cry for her. You have a beautiful heart and soul and any furrry friend in your care is lucky indeed. It must comfort you to know that you have so many friends on this blog that truly care for you and share your pain. Reach out to us anytime it seems overwhelming.

    • Thank you so much, Kathleen. They really are so precious and that makes losing them so hard. I really do feel truly blessed to have the love and comfort of my blog family in times like this. ❤️

  187. So sorry Christy for your loss. Although she passed so soon, the joy she brought to you and your family in such a short time will always be treasured.

  188. Jo Ann Tobias says

So sorry, and you are absolutely right! You were able to give her a forever home. She knew the blessing of having a family who loved her and did everything they could to care for her. She had a family. It doesn’t matter if it was a day or years, she had a forever home! God bless you in your time of grief.

    • Thank you, Jo Ann. We are comforted by the fact that we were able to show her so much love in her short time with us. ❤️

  192. Michelle Dee says

Sympathies and understanding – I lost mine to cancer this summer, but i considered her an angel who was visiting me, so i tried to let her go… I am seeking a new kitten now- So glad you have one on your lap as you deal with your loss.

    • Aww I know that must have been difficult. There are so many kitties out there that need loving homes. I love that you are willing to open your heart again. ❤️

  193. Josee Turner says

I am grateful you adopted them both. You did give her a good life even if just for a little while. Thank you and God bless you.

  194. I am so sorry for your loss. Pets become part of our family. We lost our dog Frankie last year and he was with us for nearly 19 years! There are times I think I actually hear him bark only to realize he’s not here.
My your other Kitty Lyla prosper and grow with you and your family. Much love to you all. <3

  195. MaryJean Zajac says

    Christy,
I’m so sorry to hear about your little kitty. Recently my son and daughter-in-law and their kids had to put their dog of 13 years to sleep. You don’t realize how attached you get to these animals in such a short time. Gunther was my first grandpuppy.
I know I have been remiss with visiting your blog, but just wanted to tell you I am doing well and many things have happened since I was last here. I have met someone and we have been very happily dating.

  196. Oh sweetie so sorry for your loss. Layla will miss. Did they have any more siblings at the rescue center. Take care.

    • Thank you, Stephanie. These were the only two siblings from this litter, but once we are sure Lyla will remain healthy, we hope to find her a new friend. ❤️

  197. Oh no! I am so very sorry for your loss.

  198. I’m so sorry to hear about your fur baby…😢
    Hugs ❤️❤️❤️

So sorry to hear about losing your sweet kitty! We get attached so quickly! But there is always more room in your heart!❤️ Wishing you healing and love and kisses for her sweet sister!

  200. Ann Williams says

Oh Christy I’m so sad for you. Thank goodness Lucy knew love even for a short time. You are so giving and kind, I’m glad you shared so everyone could send you support. Hugs 💕

  201. You said not to be sad, but while reading your story I must admit my eyes leaked a little… at my desk… at work. I know for sure how quickly you can fall in love. It brought back a flood of memories from mid-summer when my husband found a tiny abandoned, abused, terrified kitten in our backyard. We declared him a gift from God and a welcome playmate for the kitty we already have. But within a couple of hours it became obvious he was very I’ll. Some sad excuse for a human had super-glued his eyes shut! It was late on a Saturday night… No weekend vet was available way out where we live. We did our best to help him live, but then took turns holding and loving on our little gift as he slipped away. Thanks for sharing your story. You’re a treasure!!

    • Oh Lauri. I can’t even imagine the anger and heartbreak of finding that poor kitty in that condition. I’m sure he felt the love you gave him in his final hours. ❤️

  202. Theresa Palm says

Aw, Christy, my heart hurts for you and your family. Our fur babies are forever in our hearts. Thank you for loving her. She’ll wait for you at Rainbow Bridge.😭

  203. So sorry to learn about Lucy, she was loved so much
In the time you had her!! RIP Lucy❤️

  204. I’m so very, very sorry about Lucy. It hurts so much to lose a pet whether you’ve had them 15 years or 15 days. A true heartbreak. All the best❤️❤️❤️

  205. Robyn Wright says

    So so sorry, Christy!

  206. sharon austin says

Hi, I don’t see my original response so I’m reposting; I’m so sad to hear about Lucy, but you took such a beautiful picture of her I thought you might repurpose a gorgeous frame and keep her spirit alive in your household. That may kickstart the healing process too. Length of time you had her doesn’t even matter; she was still a beloved member of the family!

    • Thanks again, Sharon. It took me a bit to get back to everyone, but I appreciate you wanting to be sure I got your message. You are so sweet. ❤️

  207. Sheila DelCharco says

Oh Christy, how devastating! I’m so SO sorry for you and the hole Lucy is leaving behind! Thank you for sharing this news with us, your readers, and for allowing us to help carry your burden, even just a tiny bit.

  208. Mary Loveland says

    Hi Christy,
It is true, FIP is a fatal disease of cats but it is TRANSferable to other cats via feces, saliva, food dishes etc.; there is no definitive test to detect FIP; It is caused from a mutation of a very common virus found in most cats and nearly all cats have a strong enough immune system to fend off the FIP mutation. However, in the case of kittens, many times they are given a virus or upper respiratory infection from their mamma’s that just cannot be overcome and opens them up to other serious diseases.
Please make sure you call the place where you got the kittens! They need to know and if there are other siblings they should be quarantined for a short period of time. Also, just my opinion, don’t get the shots for your little furbaby until YOU feel the kitten is very healthy.
I had cause to know all this and still can’t talk about it but I feel your pain.

    • Thank you, Mary. I’m sorry you also experienced a sad situation. I did call the shelter. These are the only two from that litter. So far Lyla appears healthy, but we are keeping a very close eye on her. ❤️

  209. Olivia M. Medina says

I’m sorry to hear about your kitten. My prayers are with you.

  210. Megan Waters says

Christy, I’m so sorry for the loss of your sweet Lucy. It is absolutely heartbreaking to lose a furry loved one no matter how long or short you have known them. It only takes a moment to fall head over heels and each one has its own distinct personality and can never be replaced. My heart goes out to you! You are right, you gave Lucy the best little life she could have had right up to the end and that’s precious! So glad your little Lyla is doing well. I know she is enjoying your loving!

    • Aww thank you, Megan. It was so unexpected and I think that’s what made it really difficult, but we are doing much better, thankfully. Loving on Lyla has really helped. XO

  211. So late to chime in on this post but had to add my sympathies to the amazing amount of sympathy sent your way. You are such a sweet, amazing person (as you can tell) and we all feel so bad that you had to loose your precious little kitten and feel such sadness 🙁 Hang in there Christy <3

    • Thank you so much, Holly…you are so sweet! We are doing much better now. Losing Lucy was just so unexpected. Lyla has been getting all the love though! XOXO

  212. Sandy Mccrea says

So sorry to hear about Lucy. I know very well what that feels like. Our furbabies are all a very important part of our lives. They bring much joy and along with that comes sadness when we lose them. Just know she is running n playing with the angels..she was loved albeit for such a short time. Keeping you n your family in my prayers

  213. Christy, it was not by accident that you went to adopt one fur baby and brought home these two sisters! These girls did not have to be separated and you gave Lucy the love she could not have had anywhere else. My condolences. ❤️
