Hello amazing friends! I have a pretty little makeover for y’all today!
I spied this breadbox for $4 at the thrift store last week:
I see breadboxes all the time at thrift stores, but I thought this one was so pretty! I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I use.
I haven’t done anything with a Frenchy feel in a while, but that is exactly what I pictured for this beauty!
Such a pretty home for your bread, don’t you think?
For this box I used my favorite white: Behr’s Bit of Sugar, made into DIY chalk paint. (Recipe HERE.)
To add the graphics to the top, I went old school. I found this image online. It led to an account on Pinterest, but stopped there so I don’t know the original source.
I tweaked the original just a bit and printed it in the reverse:
Then I positioned it facedown where I wanted it and ran a pencil across the back to transfer the image:
And here it is ready to paint in:
I used a script liner brush and Black acrylic craft paint to fill in the letters…
There was a tiny line of words below PATISSERIE that I ended up leaving out. They wouldn’t have been the easiest to paint in.
When everything was completely dry, I lightly sanded across the graphic with 220 grit sandpaper to smooth it all out. I sealed the entire box with Dixie Belle’s Satin Clear Coat using this brush.
I replaced the brass knob with this pretty glass one:
I also removed the brass plate on the front, spray painted it black, then painted it in the Bit of Sugar as well. A light sanding shows some of the details.
I tried it out on my counter and me likey!
Kinda makes me want to keep it. 🙂
I’m hoping to share some of our Halloween decor with y’all on Tuesday and then I’ll be back on Thursday with my Furniture Fixer Upper Crew sharing a brand new furniture redo!
UPDATE! See Our Halloween dining room HERE, and if Halloween isn’t your thing, you can skip to that furniture redo HERE now!! 😀
Enjoy your weekend!!

Christy, this is SO cute! “Me likey!” too 🙂 The Dixie Belle satin finish is perfect. Makes me wish I had counter space. lol (My kitchen makes a NYC flat’s kitchen look spacious. lol
Have a great rest of your week and weekend.
Christy says
Thanks, Christina! It does take up a good amount of counter space, and for that, I decided to take it to my booth. My bread does just fine in the pantry! Enjoy your weekend too! XOXO

I have been thinking about finding a bread box and drilling a hole in the back and making it a charging station.
So instead of two phones and an iPad at any given time on
my counter or who knows where…..they could all sleep
in their bread/charging box at night.
I recently ordered two plugs that will accept two USB’s
each……so now I need to find that bread box!!
Yours could be used for so many things besides bread!
$4……what a find!!
Christy says
That is such a great idea, Deb! All those devices laying on the counter can be so unsightly! XOXO

You should keep the bread box because it looks great in your kitchen!
I would have a hard time giving away all of my painting projects but I admire
people who can.
Christy says
Thank you, Mary! I loved it in our kitchen, but it took up a good chunk of counter so I dropped it off at my booth today. I really did like it though! XO

It is really pretty Christy! I am getting ready to do some diy-ing myself. I’ve never done it before but I want to start with a desk. I’ve been binge-reading your blog and I am in love. I know for sure I will make your DIY chalk paint recipe. I wanted to ask what is the difference between the Dixie Belle’s Satin Clear Coat and the Annie Sloan Clear Wax? Can they be used interchangeably, also on furniture? Which one has higher performance or is cheaper? Thanks so much, like I said, first-timer here and I want to stick to a minimal budget at the beginning as I learn. Much love, Lisa
Christy says
Thank you, Lisa! Welcome to the wonderful world of DIY!! I just found the Dixie Belle satin clear coat and really like it so far, but yes that and the wax can be used interchangeably. There is a little more work involved with waxing, but you get a beautiful soft lustre to your painted pieces. The stain clear coat goes on easier with the right brush, but I haven’t tested the durability yet. They cost about the same. I think I would try the clear coat first. Good luck! XO
Lisa says
thank you!

Sooo much better! It was way too fancy for a kitchen before… out of place there. Now it has personality and charm. Great job!

I love this! It came out SO pretty! Now I’m hoping there is a lovely breadbox out there waiting for me… and my husband is hoping there isn’t, haha! Gotta get my stash fixed up for our big sale, so I have a clear conscience and an empty garage (and a happy husband!!)! You did a fantastic job on this one!
Christy says
Thanks, Becky!! Those sales are great for purging your stash…sometimes I think I need a deadline to get mine cleared out! XOXO
Naomi S says
That is awesome! I’ve had a similar breadbox from a thrift store that I’ve had for quite a while and haven’t been inspired with what to do with it. It is already white but not quite as pretty a shape as yours and no little plaque on the front. But now that I’ve see what you did with yours I think I can get busy with mine. Thanks for the inspiration Christy!
Christy says
Yay I’m glad I could offer a little inspiration for yours! You could probably add an old drawer handle to the front for a little interest in place of the plaque! XOXO
Cecilia says
Love it! The graphic is perfect. I’d want to keep it too.
Christy says
Thanks, Cecilia! I might regret it, but I took it to my booth yesterday. It took up a lot of counter space, but it did look great in my kitchen lol! XO
