Hello awesome friends!! Thank you to everyone who entered my six-year blogiversary giveaway. I so appreciate every single kind word y’all wrote to me!! You sure know how to make a gal feel good, and I feel so blessed to get to share what I love with such a kind, giving, and truly amazing group of people! I will be drawing the winner today, so keep an eye on your inbox!!
I shared a photo of today’s project piece on Tuesday:
This was a $5 yard sale find from several years ago. You can see the original makeover HERE if you like.
I loved all the pretty details on it. Then one day the Hubby put his foot right through it. Why on earth he tried to stand on it to change a lightbulb is beyond me, but it has sat this way for almost two years. Until now.
I know I could fix the seat like I did HERE, but it was a bit rickety anyway. Plus it has some pretty details and I thought it might be fun to take it apart and see what else I could do with the parts.
This is the piece that I decided to repurpose today:
I also grabbed this curbside shelf from my stash:
To create this one-of-a-kind chair leg shelf:
As you can see it is quite a bit lighter than it was before. I loved the original finish, but unfortunately I no longer had any of the Annie Sloan Provence paint I used. To marry the two pieces I had to repaint both.
But let’s back up a bit and see how this came together, shall we?
After taking apart the chair using a mallet, I ended up with two cool pieces I could rework into something new and fun.
Here were the casualties:
I know I’ll regret tossing some of this, but I’m trying to be a better, more selective hoarder.
I cut the shelf down to the dimensions I needed using my table saw:
To unify the two pieces, I first painted the shelf in green since that was the original color of the chair. Then I sprayed both in this Aqua spray paint I already had…
It was the closest I had to the original color.
I drilled holes in the shelf, marking my drill bit with tape so I didn’t drill too deep. This was to create holes in which to insert the chair legs…
I attached them with wood glue and once the glue was dry, I painted everything in my favorite blue, Sunken Pool by Behr, made into DIY chalk paint. (Recipe HERE.)
I decided to add a little extra support to the shelf by securing it to the back of the legs using these sawtooth hangers that I flattened with a hammer:
Hey, it worked!
I sanded lightly here and there and finished it off with Annie Sloan’s clear soft wax to seal.
My sweet boy. How they grow so fast!
Kinda fun, right?
The other cool piece from this chair that I was able to reuse is the back. I’ll share that one when I do something with it!
I’ll be back on Tuesday with a booth update. It’s been a while since we went on a field trip, and they are always fun!
UPDATE: Check out my latest booth update HERE now!
Have a fantastic weekend! 😀

Christina in SW FL says
Way to go Christy! I adore this shelf. I was really expecting a spade bit but the hole but was so much smarter. 😀 Love the colors and your creative re-purposing of the saw-tooth hangers. Brilliant.
I’m looking forward to the tour of your booth. 🙂
Enjoy your weekend also!
Christy says
Thanks, Christina! I just found a bit that worked lol. Happy weekend! XOXO

Hey Christy, I have to tell you, I’m obsessed! I stare at your blog way too long! I guess that sounds really creepy, but I am such a fan of everything you do. I recently opened a booth in a local antique mall in Georgia and you inspire me so much! I love everything you do. Thanks for sharing!!

I can’t wait! I love your pictures! They help me a lot!!
Deb says
As always, I clicked on the link in your email with happy anticipation, knowing you’ve done yet another great makeover. The chair was absolutely adorable before, but love the shelf, too! Btw, that totally sounds like something my hubby would do, too! Lol! Just a question: what kind of bit did you use to make that large hole? I have a project to do that requires a bigger hold than a normal bit will do, but I have no idea what to even look for at the hardware store!
Christy says
Aww thank you, Deb! I used a drill bit called a forstner bit for the hole. You can also search for a spade bit if your hole is a bit bigger. Here’s a buying guide that might be helpful:https://www.lowes.com/projects/woodworking-and-crafts/drill-bits-buying-guide/article Hope this helps! XOXO
Deb says
Aww, thanks so much for the info, and a link, too? You’re the best! Now I know what to look for! Have a great day!
Christy says
Absolutely! You too! 🙂

Melanie Brooks says
This is adorable! That worked out so well… And I love the idea with the sawtooth hangers. Totally ingenious! I hope you saved the shelf brackets. I can see those in a future project!
Christy says
Thank you, Melanie! I was so tickled to see it come together, and with the sawtooth hangers…well sometimes you just have to use what you have lol. As for the brackets, I wasn’t going to save them, but I did at the last minute! They might come in handy some day! XOXO

Tammy Ganci says
Hi, I would love to purchase this little shelf…I love it.
My email is tganci@ridgefieldschools.com
Christy says
Hi Tammy! Thanks! Are you local to Virginia Beach? I usually only ship if it fits in a flat rate box from the post office. The size of this one would make it pricey for sure. XO
Tammy Ganci says
Hi, I sent you a reply but it never went thru. But I wanted to tell you I live in Northern New Jersey.
Christy says
Oh darn! I was hoping you were local!
Rita Corblies says
Nice makeover… love the color both the old and new…i would have saved the round seat….I know you are trying to be less of a hoarder…aren’t we all…lol
Christy says
Thank you, Rita! I didn’t toss everything in that pile, but the original back legs were attached to the seat WAY too well and so it made it an odd piece to rework. Believe me, I try to keep as much as possible lol! XOXO
Kimberly says
This is so cute, Christy. Can’t wait to see your booth.
Christy says
Thanks, Kimberly! See ya Tuesday! XOXO
Angela says

Very clever and creative reuse, and very cute! I so enjoy your creativity!
Changing subjects: I have looked back for the episode several months ago where you gave the homemade recipe for a grout cleaner and explained how you cleaned the grout in your kitchen (and bathroom?) floors, but I can’t find it. I’d like to do my grout before the holidays and company, but can’t remember your recipe. Would you please provide the link to that episode? Thanks in advance!
Christy says
Thank you, Kathy!! Ah yes…I shared that as part of our guest bathroom makeover…you can find that here: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/guest-bath-makeover/ XO

Christy says
Hey no worries! I absolutely loved the style of it when I bought it and wanted to keep it for myself, so I did paint it. Then when my hubby put his foot through the seat plus it not be being very sturdy at all, I just decided to take it apart and see what I could do with the parts. Have a great weekend! XO
