How to Make a Sign the Easy Way

Hello beautiful friends! I’m so excited to be here on a Wednesday! Today I’m joining some very talented ladies for the Seasonal Simplicity Summer Series hosted by my lovely friend, Krista from The Happy Housie.

I’m also working through my latest pile of treasures…or as I’m lovingly referring to them as…my yard sale rescue pile. These are several items that I had in my yard sale pile but decided to redo instead of sell at the last minute, as well as a couple of items I tried hard to push onto someone else at my yard sale, but no one would take them home with them lol.

Luckily one of those pieces was perfect for a Summer-inspired makeover!

Today I’m sharing this sign that I picked up at a yard sale for one whole dollar last Summer:

It has just sat and sat in my storage room for the last year and finally, I decided I would just sell it at our yard sale and get it out of the house. Then of course, I decided as I was pricing everything that I should really just keep it and give it a simple redo. I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.

And that is just what I did!

I used a super simple method that just about anyone can do to turn it into a fun Summer sign:

I knew I could whip it up in a few minutes if I used my silhouette, but since not everyone has access to a fancy cutting machine, I went old school this time to show how easily this can be made without one.  If you have Word on your computer, you can totally make this!

  • The first thing I did was lightly sand the sign with 220 grit sandpaper and give it a pretty new background color:

This pretty blue is Dixie Belle’s Vintage Duck Egg mixed 50/50 with white.

Ya’ll know how much I love these lighter coastal blues!

  • Next, you’ll need to print your letters in Word. I shared exactly how to do that step-by-step in this post.

  • Then you’ll need to cut them out. This sign is 6″ X 30″. I used 550 font size and they fit just right. You may need to print a couple of letters out in different sizes until you get a good fit. These thicker fonts work best.

The font I used here is Britannic.

  • I just traced around the letters with a pencil…

If you plan to reuse the letters, you may want to use cardstock instead of regular printer paper.

That was after the first coat. I gave it two coats.

And that was that. I kept the weathered look of the original border as is.

And it’s okay that the letters aren’t perfect. It’s hand-made!

This is another keeper! It’s already hanging in our kitchen!

I don’t know why it took me so long to do something with it. Now instead of taking up space in my storage room, I have a pretty new piece of decor to welcome Summer!

Super duper cute! And don’t laugh, I use word ALL.THE.TIME. and I still had to click your link to find out how you could print at 550? I’m like: my word doesn’t do that! LOL After all these years, I had nooooo idea you could just type in any size you wanted. SMH And omg, is that going to be a game changer for me! Learn something new every day, right? Now see, not only are your projects economical and frugal, they’re educational. LOL!!

    • Oh that is too funny! Well I have a confession…it was a reader that pointed that out to me about five years ago! Ha ha…glad I could pass that onto you! XOXO

LOL!! Different strokes for different folks, Christy! I LOVED the old sign. We’re building a log cabin in the NC mountains and I would have loved that for our side porch! Oh, well. Yours is sweet but I wish I found that sign first. ; )
