Hello dear friends! It’s one of my favorite days of the month…time to meet up with my Furniture Fixer Upper crew where we all share furniture pieces that could use some love! I’m using my piece today to share how to use Sea Spray!
Here is how today’s makeover originally started out:
It was a $20 thrift store find several years ago.
I redid it about a year ago in this lovely Kudzu green color:
You can see all the pretty pictures of this version in the original makeover HERE.
I had a handful of pieces that have been hanging around my booth longer than I’d like, so I decided to bring them home and give them a refresh, and this is the second one from that group.
For this project, I wanted to play with Dixie Belle’s Sea Spray Texture Additive to give it some texture.
How to use Sea Spray
Sea spray is great for giving things a fresh-from-the-beach salty air look and feel.
To begin, I mixed one scoop with about 4 oz of paint in Fluff:
It is recommended to mix two scoops with 8oz of paint, but I didn’t think I would need that much. I did end up having to mix a little more to complete this project though. And of course, you can use any color of paint, but I wanted white to show through later.
After stirring, I got a nice textured paint that was about the consistency of oatmeal:
Then I applied it right over the top of my original finish:
I used my Best Dang Brush to pounce it onto the surface. The large, flat head made light work of this step.
(Working in your jammies and slippers is totally optional, but it makes for a better outcome.)
And as you can see, I was able to apply the Sea Spray mixture right over the top of the transfers I had applied to this piece!
Once that had enough time to dry, I followed up with one coat of Vintage Duck Egg Blue:
And finally, this table got a good sanding with 220 grit sandpaper. I like to wrap it around an old sanding sponge to make it easier to handle:
And as you can see, it sanded away the top layer of paint revealing the white below where the texture from the Sea Spray was.
I have not sealed this piece as I don’t think it really needs it!
THe Result
This color is always a win for me!
It’s such a great coastal hue and I love it with the white coming through where I sanded over the Sea Spray texture:
I also decided to add a little embellishment on the front with a pull from Hobby Lobby…
It’s so cute!
It’s always fun to play with different products! I have a set of candlesticks that might get this treatment next!
Don’t forget my friends have furniture makeovers to share today too!
And that’s another piece redone…again!
See the hexagon table redo here if you missed it!
And I didn’t take many photos at my nephew’s wedding on Tuesday as it was a technology free event, and I didn’t get their permission to share what I did get before they ran off to their honeymoon destination early yesterday morning, but I do have these fuzzy photos of me and my boys!
Jack couldn’t make it because Tuesday is his longest day of classes and he’s about three hours away.
And I also have this one of me and my sisters at the very end of the night after dancing for about two hours straight! My shorty sister in the middle was the mother of the groom:
The wedding was absolutely lovely and we had a blast!
I’ll be back with this drum table on Tuesday:
UPdate: See take two on this piece HERE now!
Have a fantastic weekend!!
XOXO,
Don’t Miss a Thing!
If you like what you see, there are several ways to follow along!
Marietta R Walker says
I love the look it gave you when you sanded over the texture. Very nice and oh, how I love the blues!
Christy says
Thank you, Marietta! Yes…it now has such a cool texture to it and I think it suits this look better! XOXO
Susan says
The blue is really pretty, but the white handle seems kind of stark. Any way to soften it? (Just an idea. 😁). 🌷
Christy says
Thank you, Susan! I think you can see more of the white coming through on the table in person than what shows on camera, so I do think the white handle works. If the handle wasn’t white, I would just omit it. 🙂 XOXO
Mary Kaiser says
How cute that turned out! I love the white coming thru and the texture! That texture would cover up so much if you had a piece that had issues and you didn’t want to do a ton of sanding. Such a cute picture of you and your sisters.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Mary! Absolutely, this texture could cover up a lot of boo boos ha ha! And thanks…that was the end of the night and we were quite sweaty by that point form dancing. None of us thought to get a photo earlier in the night lol! XOXO
Denise Cox says
What was the color of the first paint you used?
Christy says
The green was Kudzu…it’s a lovely green! XOXO
Janice Holt says
The table turned out lovely. Such a pretty color and loved the “pull” on the drawer. Bet it will sell now. Have a great week-end.
Christy says
Thank you, Janice! I sure hope so…will keep y’all posted! Happy weekend to you too! XOXO
Christina says
Oooo cute makeover of that little table!!! I bet it flies out of your booth this time!
Love the photos of you and your boys as well as you and your sisters.
Christy says
Thank you, Christina! I hope so! And thanks…wish we had taken more, but it was a good time for sure! XOXO
Denise - Salvaged Inspirations says
Super cute and the color is a win for me too! And love the pic… looks like you all had so much fun! XOXO
Christy says
Thank you, my friend! We had a blast!! XOXO
Carol says
I love the look of this piece in the Redo 2. Were you able to sell it after the redo? Loved seeing you and your sister, y’all look like you had a great time.
So great of you to share pricing with us and also letting us know that sometimes the first time doesn’t work!
Thanks again!
C
Christy says
Thank you, Carol! I just dropped it back off at my booth this afternoon, so we’ll see if sells now…I sure hope so! And we sure did have a ball! Have a great weekend!! XOXO
Cheryl in Charlottesville says
Awwww, Christie, you 3 sisters are adorable !! Congrats to the happy couple !! I love the color Kudzu, it’s the perfect shade of that “vintage” green. Don’t get me wrong, I love the beach, fluffy blues too, but that green 💚💚💚 I’m crushing on it this “spring”. Well ‘almost’ spring. 🥰
Christy says
Aww thank you, Cheryl!! We had so much fun! And yes, this color of green is SO pretty!! The transfer I had on it said “Bees & Queens” with a little bee on it, and that could have stopped it from selling also, but oh well! It won’t stop form using that lovely green in the future! XOXO
Marcie Lovett says
And it’s outta here! My bet is that table doesn’t last a day before somebody grabs it up now😉
Fun to see another way to create texture, too.
Christy says
Thank you, Marcie!! I hope you’re right, my friend! I’ll be using this technique on some smalls here soon! XOXO
Charleen says
I believe you hit on the best this time. I love the duck egg blue, probably my fav of all your colors. Great job as always!! Have a blessed day.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Charleen! I agree…I can never go wrong with Duck Egg! Enjoy the rest of your day too!! XOXO
Niki says
I have to admit, I liked the green, I liked the white in between, and I sort of like the blue. Glad you had a great time at the wedding. I hope the couple have a long incredible life together!!
Christy says
Thanks, Niki! I liked the green too! And the wedding was so much fun! XOXO
MrsSW says
Much improved, Christy.
Is the color in the before & after picture the true color?
Sheila
Christy says
Thank you, Sheila! Yes, pretty much! Look at the most close-up photo showing the texture and that is the most accurate! XOXO
Robin says
I like both colors, actually, but you need to sell what you paint. Does the new Duck Egg blue table have a bumpy texture now? Even though you sanded to reveal the white under the blue not sure I’d buy a piece of furniture that had ‘texture’ to it. Why wasn’t it sealed with so many layers of paint on it? Chippy paint is usually sealed (I thought) so that it doesn’t flake off. This technique is not the same, I know, but it seems similar? Inquiring minds want to know, lol!
Christy says
Thank you, Robin! It would be amazing if I didn’t have to worry about selling… I would go to town with some color lol! The texture feels quite smooth after sanding. This isn’t what you would call chippy paint…that would be more like milk paint and you would definitely want to seal that to prevent it from continuing to chip. Chalk paint is there to stay! And actually, it does not require sealing if you plan to let it dry and cure for a full 30 days before using. It’s just that most don’t want the super flat look of chalk paint, so sealing it gives it a prettier outcome. The flat finish suits this look though. 🙂 XOXO
Stacey says
The table is adorable…and so are you!!!🥰
Christy says
Aww you are so sweet, Stacey! Thank you!! XOXO
Bev says
I like the green but love the blue. Your work is always the best. Would love to have an update on how fast the new makeoverS on everything sold. Always looking for inspirations from you.
Christy says
Aww thank you, Bev! I appreciate that so much!! I will definitely report back when these pieces sell! Have a fantastic weekend! XOXO
Carroll Xavier says
Love the redo, I go for the beach cottage coastal look every time 🙂 Thrilled that you used the texturing as I have been dying to try it but was hesitant as to the end look. After seeing how gorgeous your piece turned out, I’m excited to give it a go! Love the sister shot; I have 3 sisters and know how much fun it is to get together. Y’ll look fabulous!
Christy says
Thank you, Carroll! I do too and it seems to suit this piece better! And I love the Sea Spray, so I’m sure you will too. It was so easy to use! Isn’t it the best having sisters?? One of mine lives out of state, so we always love when we can get together! XOXO
Addie says
I liked the table green better……but then again, I am a glenn crazy person!!!!
What sells….sells and that is the end result you want!!! In fact, I can’t understand why it didn’t sell in green!!!??? xx
Christy says
Ha ha I did love the green too…but alas, it was not meant to be! If I didn’t have to sell my pieces, I would definitely enjoy more color for sure!! XOXO
Petra says
I love it in the blue! But honestly I would’ve whipped it up myself as I love green!! Have a lovely weekend!
Petra says
Oh, and adored the little bee!
Christy says
Me too!! 😀
Christy says
Thank you, Petra! I thought it was so cute in the green, but I guess it wasn’t meant to be…hopefully, this will be its last makeover lol! I hope you have a wonderful weekend too, my friend! XOXO
Dalila says
I like the color, too, Christy. But, most of all, I like the picture of your family. You all look like sisters. What a joy!
Christy says
Aww thank you, Dalila! We are so very grateful to have each other! XOXO
Michele M. says
That sweet table is going to fly out of your booth now. As I ADORE green, this beachy vibed do-over was a smart decision. It looks great! But not as great as you at the wedding! So pretty! That atrium area is gorgeous too.
Love the genetics – sure can tell you all are sisters. I have two sisters too and we look so much alike – and my two daughters look like us too.
I am a shorty too – five foot- how short is your sis? She’s adorable. I understand shorties. LOL.
Best wishes to the newlyweds. ♥♥
Christy says
Thank you, Michele! I sure hope so…hoping it appeals to more buyers better now. And thank you! I am so blessed to have these girls as sisters, and the wedding was just lovely! My younger sister is 5’2″, I believe. 🙂 XOXO
Jen @ Girl in the Garage says
Super cute redo, Christy! I loved the green too though, too bad it didn’t sell! xo
Christy says
Thank you, Jen! Yeah I liked the green too…oh well! Hoping it sells now! XOXO
Cheryl Atkinson says
Hi Christy! If will definitely sell right away now. I love using Salt Wash.
Christy says
Hi Cheryl! I’m hoping so! XOXO
