Hello lovelies, and welcome back! Today, I’m sharing another way to repurpose an old frame! Two of the three pieces I have left in my haul are frames, so this one is getting its big makeover today:
I found it at the thrift store like this new in the packaging for $6.
This frame was mostly just dusty, not really dirty, so I just went over it well with my shop vac and brush attachment and then wiped it down with a cloth.
I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Paint
Next, I gave it two coats of Cotton. I usually share super exciting pics of painting in action, but I didn’t capture that exciting moment this time lol.
When I first removed what was in the frame, I noticed that the recess where the picture goes was pretty deep. I scooped up a bunch of old fencing from my sister’s house when they were redoing their fence, and so I planned to fill it with that.
Oops! So much for plan A!
Except, most of my fencing was warped! Boohoo. I was really wanting that look for this piece.
Thank you, Plan B!
My hubby is working on adding some planking to a feature wall in his office and he left a brand new carton of it in the garage, so I decided to help myself to a couple of pieces!
He bought it at the Home Depot, and I cut the pieces to fit my frame using my miter saw:
It gave me a very similar look to what I was after with the fence pickets, so that worked out great!
I secured the planks in place with my Logan Point Driver:
Once I had them all secured, I replaced the original hardboard backing and secured it once more.
Adding a Transfer
I just received 20 BRAND NEW transfers from Redesign this weekend and listed them in my Etsy shop, so I knew I wanted to play with them for today’s project!
I chose this GORGEOUS Blue Gardens Middy transfer:
I started by adding the large cluster of blooms to the center:
Then, to make it longer to fit the shape of the frame better, I added on to either side with some of the single blooms:
I was very pleased at how well the transfers adhered to this rough surface!
Once I had the transfer pieces the way I wanted, I went over the entire surface with a finishing pad to be sure everything was adhered well.
I used one for the frame also to wet distress it:
I just sprayed water with my mister sprayer and then went over it with the finishing pad. Sometimes what is just below that brown surface on the frame is a whitish color, and I did not want that to show through when I distressed a little. Wet distressing prevents that.
Seal
All that was left to do was seal, and I did that with Satin Clear Coat and a brush:
The blue sponge is my favorite way to seal, but this surface was too rough.
The After
Here is how this repurposed frame turned out!
As you can see I ended up adding hooks across the bottom to add function:
I predrilled them first…
And then screwed the hooks in place…
I found these already painted at Hobby Lobby.
Once I applied the transfer, I used a razor knife to cut in between each plank.
These are my barstools from our island in the kitchen:
I originally redid them HERE in white vinyl with chrome nail heads when we redid our kitchen back in 2018.
Lyla and and her claws eventually got the better of them, so I changed them up with some simple blue ticking fabric.
This would be cute in an entry way, a bathroom, even a bedroom!
This transfer is just one of many brand new releases that I’ve added to my Etsy shop this weekend!
Here’s a peek at the rest! (I’ve linked to each below each graphic.)
Green Foliage
Wild Amorous
Bug Whisperer
Opulent Florals
Blue Wildflowers
Blush Bouquet
Sunny Glow
Lavender Bunch
Purple Blossom
Tiny Flowers

Bright Meadow
I also got the new H2O transfers in! These are water activated much like a temporary tattoo and are supposed to be super easy to add to your surfaces!
Wild Garden
Blossomy

Azure Florals II
These are smaller with a smaller price tag to match, perfect for the smalls and I can’t wait to try them!

So pretty now, I love your plan B! I love how you cut between the slats, it turned out amazing. That transfer is so pretty! I love how you helped yourself to your husbands wood!! It’s his own fault, he should know better by now that nothing will stand in your way for a makeover! LOL!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Mary!! He should definitely know better than to leave good stuff like that where I can find it ha ha! XOXO
Cecilia says
That turned out very pretty. With all the transfers to chose from, how in the world do you decide? So many pretty ones! I love the planks for the back. Did your husband miss those? Lol.
Christy says
Thank you, Cecilia! I know, right? There are so many pretty transfers to choose from, but some just speak to me I guess lol. I ended up telling him and he didn’t care…he probably knew the risk involved by leaving them in my workspace ha ha! XOXO

Hello Christy,
What a transformation! But did you cut between the slats before or after applying the final clear coat?
Christy says
Thank you, Anna! I did that before the final clear coat. XOXO

Love it and how many people have frames laying around saying “what can I do with these”? Now we know. I have probably missed this but could you one day show with frames or furniture what you do with the backs of frames, furniture and underside? If I missed it boot me in the right direction. Hugs
Christy says
Thank you, Bonnie! There are so many possibilities with a frame for sure! I did share the back on my last frame repurpose although I just used plain brown Kraft paper on the back… you can see that here: https://www.confessionsofaserialdiyer.com/create-new-wall-art-with-old-frames-and-transfers/ For this one, I actually had some pretty dark blue printed kraft paper that worked out really well! Shoulda snapped a pic! XOXO
