Hello dear friends!! I am still on the hunt for more treasures for my next haul, so I’m pulling out this stenciled folding screen I shared back in 2017! I just loved the outcome then, and thought it was worth another share!
It started out like this:
It was $35 at the thrift store and 25% off that, so I ended up paying $26 for it. I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Back then, we didn’t have the wonderful transfers we have to play with these days, so one of my main tools for embellishing my pieces was stencils, and that is exactly what I used for this one!
Clean
I started with a good cleaning first as it had a ton of cob webs on it. My go-to prep cleaner these days is White Lightning. I just mix a tablespoon of it into a half gallon of warm water.
Paint
Then I got to painting! This color is very similar to Vintage Duck Egg Blue mixed 50/50 with Cotton.
Adding a stencil
I bought the stencil I used for this project at Michaels. HERE is a similar one on Amazon.
To add my stencil, first I measured to see where I wanted to add it and in what pattern. Then I sprayed Loctite Spray Adhesive on the back to hold it in place. I used a small brush and chalk paint to fill in the stencil, taking care to brush away from the edges as much as possible:
I try to avoid using chalk paint for stencils these days as acrylic craft paint is much easier to wash off your stencil than chalk paint.
I removed the stencil while the paint was still wet.
Once I had all the stenciling complete, I decided to add stripes to the alternating panels. I did that using FrogTape for delicate surfaces:
You can see how I measure out my stripes really easily in this post HERE.
Seal
I originally sealed this screen with Annie Sloan’s clear wax, but Dixie Belle’s wax is water-based, so it doesn’t have the harsh fumes you get from the other brand’s oil-based version. I much prefer that, and applying it to large surfaces is a breeze with the Best Dang Brush!
The after
Here it is all redone and ready for action:
Much better!
I always wanted a fancy a screen to change behind like in the movies ha ha.
Sanding generously with 220 grit sandpaper before sealing smoothed out any imperfections:
You can see that I broke up the stencil with another smaller one to make everything fit nicely…
Y’all know I love me some stripes!
{That chair was a DIY cover made from drop cloth. See the full tutorial HERE. The sign above the door is a Pottery Barn knock-off I made also. You can see more of that HERE.}
This was a fun one to redo, but can you imagine all the possibilities with transfers??
Luckily, it didn’t last long in my booth!
I have another thrifty replay in mind for Thursday, this quirky lattice covered cabinet:
UPDATE: See how pretty this cabinet is now HERE!
As always, I appreciate y’all stopping by!

I kinda figured this one was before I hopped onto your ‘bandwagon’, as I had not seen this one. It’s quite pretty! And while I’m not a big fan of stripes myself, they fit quite nicely here…😉🙃! Good job…can’t wait until the next haul…😝😜🤩!!!!
Christy says
Thank you, Denise! I think mixing the stripes with the stencil pattern helps! I have a nice sized haul so far, but I was hoping to find a couple more furniture pieces! XOXO

Christy says
Thank you so much, my dear friend! This was before all the gorgeous transfers we have to play with lol. Yes, pull yours out and have some fun with it!! XOXO

Oh wow! This is Beautiful! I came across one of these awhile back but passed on it. I just couldn’t come up with an idea at the time for it! Love the colors you chose!
Christy says
Thank you, Sandi! There are almost too many possibilities which makes it tough! XOXO
Rebecca says
That screen is gorgeous! You always use such pretty coastal colors! I live in the Midwest, where we don’t see much of that. Just curious — what do you use to clean your brushes?
Christy says
Thanks so much, Rebecca! I just use plain water and a very small wire brush to clean my brushes. Every few months I’ll soak them in Dixie Belle’s brush cleaner just to condition them. XOXO
Cyndi says
That is gorgeous! (But I’ll admit to being a little intimidated by stripes. Thanks for your link to your ‘how-to.’ 🙂
Christy says
Thank you, Cyndi!! Stripes are much less intimidating when you use the tape as your guide for sure! XOXO
Niki says
A church I used to go to had screens like this that I always wanted to paint. I never did, as I didn’t know if it was my place to do it and o didn’t really know who to ask.
This is a fun little redo. I’m curious what you would do now with transfers if you found another screen for your next haul.
Christy says
Aww I bet some paint would have done wonders for them! And yes, I would love to find another one to use transfers on! XOXO
Jan says
Gorgeous! I love it!
Christy says
Thanks so much, Jan! XOXO

Christy! This is another WOW and sooo glad you reposted as I missed it
the first time. It’s no wonder it lasted a New York second in your booth! I wish you could find another one, as that blank canvas made a plain Jane into a beauty! My best, Elise
Christy says
Aww yay! Thank you so much, Elise! I always keep my eyes peeled for another one, but I haven’t seen one since! XOXO
Constance Colvin says

Mary says
Oh, I wish we lived close; I have so much furniture to get rid of here and our thrift stores no longer take pieces unless they are in “perfect” condition. How sad for the repurposers!! and what a waste. So far I have refused to throw anything away…will find someone. Thank you for sharing this wonderful project from your past, Christy! The stripes with the stencils really set the piece apart. I can see why it sold quickly from your booth! Thank you for inspiring us once again (and I’m going to check out the reupholstery project you shared too? from the drop cloth? Amazing! I have some pieces that could benefit too 🙂 Happy shopping!
Christy says
Oh that is such a shame that your thrift stores are being so picky! The pieces that need a little extra TLC are always my favorite! And thank you! I’m so glad you enjoyed this oldie but goodie! XOXO
Petra says
Love screens and what you did was perfect. And I reckon you could make those screens and sell more! xo
Christy says
Thank you, Petra! Lumber is really expensive over here at the moment, but these probably wouldn’t be too hard to make at all! XOXO
Cheryl Atkinson says
Hi Christy! I had thought I have seen all of your projects but I missed this one. I love it!!
Christy says
Oh yay! I’m so glad this one was new to you! And I’m glad you enjoyed it! Thank you, Cheryl! XOXO
Anita says
Love this screen the way you have redone it! Love, love the stripes. I sometimes prefer stencils over transfers as they seem more authentic in some way. Transfers can look amazing, but sometimes they can be too predictable and too perfect. Thanks for re-sharing this beauty! Not in the least bit surprised that this didn’t last in your booth.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Anita! And I totally get what you’re saying about the transfers vs stencils! XOXO
Sharon L Austin says
Definitely worth another share, I love this project!!
Christy says
Thank you! This was a fun one for sure!! XOXO
Marietta says
Stoooooop! You are killing with inspiration. The stencils and then the addition of the strips is purely atistical genius. I thought, Now what is she going to do with four solod panels with absolutely no character or flair, no trim to speak of, no swirls or beautiful trim, and then. uh-mic drop.
Pure beauty! Oops, you did it again.
Christy says
Aww ha ha…I’m so glad you love this one, Marietta! Thank you! I sure could have added some decorative trim…I didn’t even think of that! XOXO
Lee says
Beautiful, what a great piece! I love and miss the calming stencils you once did, but I’m not a fan of most decals. They seem too colorful for my tastes and decor.
Your painted pieces alone are stunning.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Lee! I’ll try to mix more of the stenciled and simply painted pieces in with this next haul! XOXO
Bonnie says
Boy do I remember this one, and in your old house too. Time has flown and I can go back through all your stuff and say I remember that one and that one lol.
This was such a great one and love you put what you used then and what you use now.
Here’s to more years of sharing my friend.
Christy says
Thank you so much, Bonnie! I’ve been blogging for ten years this fall and I’ve now been in each house for five years…it doesn’t seem like it’s been that long! I so appreciate you following along with me over the years!! XOXO
Kristina says
Hi Christy~
Just want to share my first transfer project with you. I got this trunk on Craigslist. It dates back to the late 1800’s and it was a hot mess when I got it!
My daughter is taking it to college with her.
Thanks for all your inspiration to take things like this on 🙂
Kristina
Whoops, thought I could send you a picture of it.
Christy says
Oh darn..I’d love to see it! You can email me at christykjames@cox.net if you’d still like to share it! XOXO
