Hello sweet friends! Today I am back with one more item from my pile of goodies I scored on my last day of thrifting…another one of these drawers:
I found four drawers in all that day that came from a piece of furniture that couldn’t be salvaged I guess. No problem, I scooped them right up. The problem is, once you get them home, what do you do with them? It’s hard to come up with new and clever ways to use old drawers and so there they sit. Am I right?
Not this time though because I am determined to work through every last piece that came home with me that day!
Here is what I dreamed up for this drawer:
Now it has a whole new life as a cute storage piece!
This could be used for jewelry or remotes or office supplies or makeup or paper or mail or whatever! I’ve included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I love.
Any guesses as to what I built the box out of?
Did you guess one of the leaves I removed from the drop-leaf table?
Then you would be right!
I busted out just about every saw I own it seems to create this seemingly simple box:
Sure I can make a simple box…no problem! Remind me to never attempt a furniture build from scratch because I am afraid it would do me in! It’s harder than it sounds to get everything cut perfectly even and level.
I did eventually get the pieces I needed cut though:
I sanded them well, especially the cut edge, before assembling them using wood glue and my nail gun. Then I filled the holes with wood filler.
Inside and out got two coats of Hurricane Gray from Dixie Belle Paint. The drawer was painted in Bit of Sugar by Behr made into DIY chalk paint. (Recipe HERE)
Then I decided to give the top of the box a little stencil detail:
You can find this stencil HERE. I used spray adhesive to hold the stencil in place and gave it three coats of chalk paint with a small brush. After removing the stencil, I filled in the gaps that give it away as a stencil, using a liner brush.
When everything was completely dry, I sealed with Annie Sloan’s Clear Soft Wax.
For the drawer, I decided last minute to use a different pull and filled in the hole in the front using wood filler. This is one of my favorite pulls from Hobby Lobby:
Remember these drawers had that cheap brown velvet-ish liner before? I covered that with this pretty frenchy print fabric instead (started out as curtains!), using matte Mod Podge and a chip brush to attach it like a glue:
To finish it off, I added these sweet tiny feet I picked up at Hobby Lobby:
I wish they were just a tad larger, but they still add a sweet detail. Here are some larger ones just like them that I found on Amazon.
I am thrilled that I found another use for one of those drawers and for one of the leaves from my table!
I had a couple of requests for the silver tray to be next in line, so silver tray it is! I’ll be back with this pretty tray on Tuesday!
And then I only have a couple of projects left to share!
UPDATE: See how this tray turned out now HERE!

Amazing. Who had thought. Very clever turning an ordinary drawer into a storage unit.
I take it that you didn’t add drawer sliders to this.
I can’t wait to see what you do with that silver tray as I have one that is heavy and quite large and styled very much like what you have.
Christy says
Thank you, Colleen! No sliders…the drawer bottom was nice and level and slides easily in and out. 🙂 XOXO

How cute that turned out!! You are amazing! How your brain keeps coming up with these awesome make overs I will never understand!! That is so great that you used your “spare parts” from your other make over! Well I am in Michigan and we are in the deep freeze, maybe that’s why my brain can not fathom all your creativity!! Another fun and useful item! Cannot wait to see the tray makeover! Thanks for your inspiration!
Christy says
Thank you so much, Mary! I was actually about to head to Home Depot to get wood to create the box when it occurred to me that I could use one of the table sides! I’m so thrilled it worked out. Stay warm, my friend!! XOXO

Shirley says
I love it, it’s really beautiful but you put way too much work into that. Even though you used basically leftover wood, I know how hard that wood was to cut and the hastle of pulling the saws out…etc. I’ve done the big work starting from scratch with new and used woods and when you build a large piece it is a lot of work! Even the smaller pieces are a lot of work but well worth it in the end. It definitely gives me satisfaction, which I’m sure in the end you felt the same. Again very nice job! I love the end result!
Christy says
Thank you, Shirley, and yes I agree…that was a lot of work for this small piece! I didn’t realize how hard that wood would be to cut, but in the end it was worth it! XOXO

Christy says
Aww you are so sweet, Carolyn, thank you! Yes this would make an excellent box for cutlery! XOXO
Wendy says
Perfect Christy. Great use of the wood. Right now I found doors at IKEA for 3.00 each that I am making into a wall mounted wine rack between 2 cupboards. They too are solid wood. Will make for a great Wine Rack. 😉
Christy says
Thank you, Wendy! Your wine rack sounds very cool!! XOXO
Marcie Lovett says
I thought you’d pop some feet on and call it a tray, but this is just inspired, Christy! We didn’t have to wait too long to see the table leaves get repurposed, did we? Call it a learning experience – it’ll go much easier next time ????
Christy says
Thank you, Marcie! I was thrilled to find a use for one of those leaves! And you are right…it’s always better the next time around! Enjoy your weekend! XOXO
Mikki says

Debra A Wise says
Such a clever makeover! So cute!
Christy says
Thanks so much, Debra! XOXO
Mary says
Very cute box and I agree, you put a lot of work into it but it looks really good. Do you think you could make a sofa table with the other leaf and extra legs from the drop leaf table?
It’s really fun to see you work through all the projects. Thank you for sharing.
Christy says
Thank you, Mary! I thought about that for the other leaf…great idea! I’m glad you are enjoying seeing this lot transformed! XOXO
Joni says
Omg that’s amazing! I feel you on the box. I made a rough crate out of 1×2 scrap trim pieces and it took hours and hours to get it not-quite-even. I can’t imagine cutting the wood out of a large piece and getting it all lined up. You were my inspiration to ask for a table saw for Christmas this year. We are in one of the cold states right now (not the worst though) so it will be awhile before I can try it out. Thank you for sharing your awesomeness with us!
Christy says
Thanks so much, Joni! Yes…it is way harder than it looks to get everything square! And I love that you were inspired by the table saw…it will help you make amazing things…when the temps thaw a bit of course! XOXO
Shelley says
Love it!!! You always come up with the greatest ideas!
Christy says
Aww I appreciate that so much, Shelley! Thank you! XOXO
Debbie in TX says
Can’t believe you already found a way to use one of the drop leaves from the table. Way to go!! This little drawer is very pretty and so useful. I noticed the little feet right away and thought they were the perfect addition. Guess it’s a good thing you have all of those saws to help get the job done!
Christy says
I didn’t waste any time ha ha…I am thrilled that I was able to use one of the leaves already! And yes I needed every one of those saws! Thanks, Debbie! XOXO
Cindy says
Wow…that is amazing! I knew you wouldn’t let those table leaves go to waste! You are the goddess of upcycling! Well done!
Christy says
Thank you, Cindy! I am so excited I found a use for one of those leaves so soon! And I will wear proudly wear that title ha ha! XOXO
Cheryl says
You are amazing!!
Christy says
Aww thanks so much, Cheryl! XOXO
Cecilia from Georgia says
The little feet are soooo cute! I wondered what the drop leaf would become one day and there you have it! I bet the wood was heavy and hard to cut…kudos to you for sticking with your original plan! Can’t wait to see what the silver tray transforms into! I appreciate your responses to my questions and changed to Frog tape and it works so much better! Thanks! XOXO
Christy says
Thank you, Cecilia! The wood was very heavy, but I eventually got her done ha ha. You are so welcome…I am so glad you found the FrogTape to work better for you. Feel free to reach out any time, I’m glad to help if I can! XOXO

I am astonished at how astonishing the idea of making a drawer into a… drawer is to me, haha! You Are Brilliant. My son and I were looking over what was left of your stash and trying to come up with drawer ideas. A drawer never occurred to us. Duh! I love it!!!
Christy says
Ha ha you are so funny! Sure, why not make it a…drawer? Lol! Thanks, Becky!! XOXO

Hi Cristy,
This I absolutely LOVE! Those little feet look so perfect! Nothing better that salvaging unwanted pieces and giving it a purpose. I have a problem throwing anything away that has potential. I’m convinced you could take ANYTHING and make it great. I’m anxious to see your next makeover!
Heidy
Christy says
Aww you are so sweet, Heidi, thank you so much!! Absolutely…I love finding new purpose for things!! XOXO

I really love how different these two drawers turned out. It just shows the versatility of every piece, that you can take two of the same piece and turn them into completely different things.
Christy says
Thanks, Tori! It was fun to reimagine these drawers! XO
Julie Briones says
