Hello awesome friends! So I was rather vague about what I would be sharing today when I posted on Thursday because I knew I would be sharing an old favorite. However, at the time, I couldn’t say why.
We celebrated my Dad’s 71st birthday on Saturday with a surprise party! My and my younger sister’s birthdays as well as two of her sons all celebrate September birthdays as well, so we hatched a plan to host a get together to celebrate all of our birthdays. However what my dad did not know is that my younger brother drove up from South Carolina with his daughter and my older sister and her husband flew in from Wisconsin make it more of a surprise for him!
My hubby caught it all on video. You’ll see that we welcomed him with fanfare like it was a surprise party, although he knew we were getting together, but then my brother came out from around the corner to surprise him, and then my sister. He was quite surprised:
If you have trouble viewing, see it on YouTube HERE.
It was small with just some family, but perfect!
My Dad is the kindest, most giving person I know, and we were so happy to be able to make his day!
Happy Birthday, dad!!
So with family coming into town and hiding out at our house, it was a great excuse to revisit a great makeover from my archives! Enjoy this oldie, but definitely GOODIE!
This was originally a Furniture Fixer Upper post, so I left those links to my friends’ furniture flips at the bottom for even more makeover inspiration!
I knew y’all wouldn’t mind at all if I reshared this pretty hutch:
Can’t you just imagine how pretty those curves will be painted??
I found this on my last thrift store stop that day. It was only $99 at one of my favorite thrift stores, and I had a $5 off coupon too! Coupons at the thrift store? The best!
So, $94 was a steal for this beauty! I did start out painting it white:
But that was just so that when I sanded, white would show through this beautiful blue:
Yep, I went full on blue on this one, and I just love how it turned out.
I love hutches anyway, and rarely pass on a good deal on one when I see one. They are so charming and offer a ton of storage!
White hutches do sell great, but I decided this one needed to be blue. This was painted in Behr’s Gray Morning (mixed 50/50 with Pure White) that I made into DIY chalk paint.
I sure don’t miss making my own paint since I became a retailer for Dixie Belle, but it is a cost-friendly option. The Dixie Belle equivalent would be Vintage Duck Egg Blue mixed 50/50 with Cotton.
I only needed to add one coat of blue over the white…
It’s kind of hard to see, but after sanding, white showed through on all the raised parts…
You can see better in this close up:
I removed the glass in the cabinets to make painting them easier. This is easy to do if you have these rubber pieces holding the glass in place:
They just pop in and out.
I kept the original handles after spray priming them, then painting with Rustoleum’s Satin White:
If I were to redo this hutch today, I probably would replace them.
And you can see, I lined the drawers with this pretty drawer liner:
I think it originally came from the dollar store.
I had a few of these knobs left over that I found at HomeGoods for this girly dresser:
I hope you enjoyed revisiting today’s makeover, or if you’ve never seen it, I hope you enjoyed it today!
Here’s my friends’ links I’m sharing again also!
That means there are FIVE more awesome furniture makeovers for you to see!

I’ll be back here bright and early Thursday morning with my Furniture Fixer Upper crew sharing what I did with this beautiful dresser:

Awesome share! Thank you…how do you get the white to show through? Do you paint it in white before you add the color? Just wondering. Looking forward to your next project.

Thanks for the repost. I still love the beautiful color and the touch of white. Loved the pictures of your family and your dad. How special to surprise him like ya’ll did. We are avid Clemson fans as my father, grandfather, husband, daughter and son-in-law graduated from Clemson! Go tigers. As always thanks for sharing.
Christy says
Thank you, Sue!! My parents used to live in Goose Creek, SC when my brother was in high school, and he ended up going to Clemson and then working for them for a while. My Dad has been a die-hard fan ever since, so we had to decorate with Tiger colors! How cool that so many in your family are Clemson alumni! XOXO

Hi Christy…. enjoyed seeing your family party. Looks like it was a fun time! I remember this hutch makeover too. Your projects are always so well done. You have inspired me to paint my bedroom furniture. My only question is which shade of white to pick. My walls are a light yellow. Sounds like an odd color when I write it but it is a very cheery room. Thanks for any suggestions.
Christy says
Hi Marci! Thank you so much! There are two whites…Cotton and Fluff. Cotton is a true, bright white, and Fluff is more of what I call a vintage white. If you check out those listings in my Etsy shop and scroll through the photos in each listing, I have shared examples of each color. You really could go with either. Another option is to order the smallest size of each and try them out for yourself. I use them both and love them equally, but a perk of the Fluff is that is covers in two coats since it does have a bit more pigment in it. Hope this helps! XOXO

What a wonderful way to celebrate your Dad’s birthday. During this time we so need to celebrate our loved ones. Glad to see that everyone made the effort to come together as a family. I, too, love a hutch, especially when we give them a “makeover”. No…don’t change the handles that’s what makes it “vintage”. Happy Fall to you. Can’t wait to see what you and your friends show us on Thursday.
Christy says
Thank you, Kathy! We loved being able to surprise my dad! And yes, it is so important, now more than ever, to let those you love know how much you appreciate them! It was a lovely weekend! Happy Fall to you also and I’ll see you Thursday! XOXO
