Hello, amazing Friends! Today I am sharing some of my favorite thrifty makeovers!
The theme for this month’s Get Your DIY On challenge is “Wood”, and when I think of wood, I automatically think of the stash of old fence pickets I have in my garage. Nothing makes my heart go pitter patter like seeing a big ole pile of discarded fencing on the curb! That’s free money right there! And technically I can call it “reclaimed”, right?
I shared this scene on my Facebook Page a couple of months ago:
Look at all those potential projects just tossed aside!
There are just SO many ways to use old fence pickets to update furniture pieces and décor. I thought I would dig through my archives to share ten thrifty projects I updated or made using old fence pickets I found curbside. (Free!)
I usually white-wash mine for a cool, coastal feel. See details on how I do that HERE.
Enjoy!
1
First up is this very dated $8 cabinet I found at the thrift store:
One of the cabinet doors was warped so I replaced them with doors I made from old fence pickets:
Doesn’t even look like the same cabinet, does it? See more of this makeover HERE.
2
Next up is a crate/caddy I built from scraps and a spindle last year as part of a tool challenge:
Here is what those parts became:
See the tutorial for how to build this crate HERE.
I had originally made a green one as well, but it sat too long in my booth, so I made it over this Spring during this year’s March Madness thrifty makeover series:
See the green version and this makeover HERE.

This next project was such a simple one! I started with a piece of scrap wood and some hardware from Hobby Lobby:
The hardware got some spray paint in one of my favorite colors, Robin’s Egg Blue, and the wood got white-washed:
Such a cool coastal combination. See more of that project HERE.

Up next is one of my favorite makeovers ever! I found this bookcase at the thrift store for $12 this Summer:
It didn’t look like much and had zero personality, but a little white-washed fence picket action changed all that!
I had no idea it could look this cool when I bought it! See more of this transformation HERE.
5
Another favorite is a sign I made for my living room as part of another Get Your DIY On challenge. I started with this section of discarded fencing:
To create this huge sign for the wall above our TV:
I love the impact it has in my living space!
See how I made it HERE, no fancy silhouette machine required for this one!
6
Next up is one of my March Madness projects from 2015. I started with this wonky $6 thrift store find:
It just needed a backing to straighten it right out, and you guessed it…fence pickets for the win!
Ooh la la love! See more of this project HERE.
7
I came across another bookcase more recently and knew I wanted to repeat what I had done on the bookcase I shared earlier. Here is how it started:
Except I decided to add a little color this time:
Such a great way to add character to an ordinary piece! See more of this project HERE.

My favorite and best-selling tray comes from a frame just like this one:
This particular style frame can always be found at thrift stores, and the depth makes for a great tray:
They never last long in my booth! I shared how I turn these frames into trays using old fence pickets not too long ago HERE.

This next project was part of a power tool challenge. We were challenged with using power tools to create a storage piece. I decided to upcycle an item while I was at it…this frame:
This was one of several things one of my besties saved for me. Gotta love friends who look out!
It made the perfect starting point for this cabinet:
This is the perfect sized cabinet to keep on the counter for makeup, to store nail polish in, or even to hang on the wall in the kitchen to hold spices!
See how I built it HERE.
And finally this…another project from this year’s March Madness, 31 Thrifty Makeover in 31 Days Series, a $10 yard sale find:
This was the childhood bed of the lady who was selling it, so I knew I had to do something special with it:
I used old boards that had been dumped in the woods at the end of my street for the seat. They worked perfectly! See more of this transformation HERE.
That’s ten of my favorite projects using mostly old fencing a la reclaimed wood!
Oh and that fence scene I shared on Facebook?
Yes I did!

Becky says
These are all SO fabulous! My sister and her husband just tore an old fence down. I keep guiltily sliding a few more boards in my van every time I visit. : ) They keep saying there’s lots, take more, but I live in fear that some day they will Know What They Had and give me dirty looks, haha! Hey, I’m trying to repay by building all the porch signs and crates she wants… What a list of ideas THIS is!
Christy says
Thanks, Becky!! I have passed a few more fence tear-downs with all the hurricane clean up that was going on around here recently and it was all I could do not to stop. The fencing I showed in the post has me well stocked for now, but it sure is hard to pass up more lol! So I don’t blame you…if you have room, take it all lol! XO
dodie says
wow, you’ve been busy and those are cool projects. best yet, you got FREE fencing material for many more cool projects ! woot !
Christy says
Ha ha, Dodie…yep…free is the best!! That last pick up has me set for a few more projects! 🙂

I don’t appreciate the video ad on your site against Donald Trump, our only hope to make America great, safe and sense-able again but I still appreciate YOU and your blog…
Christy says
The ads are at the ad network’s discretion, so unfortunately I don’t control those. I too am conservative, and am hoping for change! Thank you, Marjorie! XO
Marion says
I have enjoyed reading your blog for some time now….it’s very informative and a joy. However, for the past several days each time I view your blog in my browser, a HUGE ad comes up from Wayfair…It’s impossible to see what your blog is about…Sometimes I end up getting so frustrated I delete the entire post…..Could the ad be just a LITTLE BIT SMALLER so it does not obliterate all the good things you have to say and show??????.
Christy says
Thank you, Marion! I have not had that experience, so I will look into it. Would you mind telling me if you are viewing on a desktop computer or a mobile device, ie phone, tablet?
