Hello, my dear Friends! I usually post on Thursdays, but I took the day off yesterday since it was my birthday!
My day started out a little something like this:
Ignore the overgrown everything…all the rain we got from the recent Hurricane made things that hadn’t grown in a month due to the intense heat this Summer, sprout like crazy, and the hubby just sprayed to kill the crabgrass before reseeding for Fall. Perfect timing, right?
This surprise was all thanks to my sister! I always thought it would be so funny to do this to her, but never have. Her birthday is tomorrow, and guess what she will be greeted with when she leaves the house?? I have to say it is quite embarrassing, but I loved it at the same time!
Today I have a little thrifty makeover for y’all. After redoing Grandma’s vintage dressers and getting them out of the garage, I had enough space to give it a thorough straightening and found several smallish things to rework, like this CD holder I picked up at least a couple of years ago:
I’m not sure what plans I had for it at the time, but here’s how I repurposed it:
After removing the plastic liners that held the CDs in place, I knew it could be a fun storage piece, perfect for so many things.
Here I used it to hold plates, napkins, etc…
To make this, I first spray-painted the insides in Rustoleum’s Robin’s Egg Blue:
Then I painted the rest in one coat of Ultra Pure White DIY Chalk Paint, sanded, and sealed it with Annie Sloan’s clear soft wax.
For the handle, I found these pieces in my garage:
I have no idea what the spindle came off of. I found a pair of them at an estate sale in the garage. They let my have them both for a dollar! The wood is actually pallet wood. I have never used pallet wood before as old fence pickets are my reclaimed wood of choice, but I did pick up an old pallet forever ago and it has been in the back yard since. I finally went out there and cut the thing apart. What a chore!
After cutting the wood, I white-washed it like I did these pickets HERE. Then used wood glue and small nails to attach them to the sides…
Then I added the handle with wood glue and my nail gun.
To embellish the front a bit, I used one of these hooks from Hobby Lobby that I painted, then whacked the hook off of…
Makes for a simple, but pretty finishing detail. I used the same thing to replace a missing cabinet handle on my $5 yard sale buffet I redid not too long ago.
These little jars were a Target dollar spot find a year or so ago.
Perfect for holding silverware here.
I think it turned out pretty cute. 🙂
And did I mention the CD holder was only 99¢??
You just never know what you can make out of old junk, huh?
If you liked this thrifty makeover, you may like this one too:
Oh and by the way I forgot to mention what will be adorning my Sister’s lawn in the morning…dinosaurs! Ha ha!
I’ll be back on Tuesday with a simple and inexpensive placecard/napkin ring idea and a Fall tablescape!

Have a great weekend!

I hope you had a GREAT Birthday! When I didn’t get your post yesterday I was off all day, it sure didn’t feel like Thursday with out your post!! Love the transformation!
Christy says
I did, Mary…thank you!! I was going to post yesterday, but I was running a bit too behind on Wednesday to get it done so I decided to play hooky with a good excuse ha ha! XO
Joanne Taggart says
A great thrifty makeover and Happy Birthday! The makeover is really cool. Especially the decoration with the hook knocked off. You’ve given me inspiration with the pallet wood strips on the sides of the caddy and chair spindle. I have some of the same things here and I’ve got caddies of all sorts, so here I go! Thank you so much for Christy for your lovely inspiration!
Christy says
Thanks, Joanne! I love that you found some inspiration here…have fun! XO
Tina Matteson says
Wowsa! Christy, you amaze me every time with these hideous things you pick up, that always make me think, “Wha-at?!” and then transforming them into beautiful pieces that I would buy in a heartbeat. This makes me want to run to the nearest thrift store and look for some horrid, dated items and copy everything you have ever done! Thanks for your consistent flow of great ideas and inspiration.
Christy says
Ha ha you made me laugh!! Yes, I do find the oddest things at times. Sometimes even I don’t know what on earth I will do with some of the things I drag home lol. Thank you!! XOXO
Linda at Mixed Kreations says
Oh I love this! It turned out supper cute! I see these cd caddies at the thrift store all the time, but it has never crossed my mind to flip it over and make a little caddy out of it. I’m always looking at it like some kind of shelf in my visions. I love this idea, and it would come in real handy at family cookouts.
Maybe I can score one at a supper good deal as well 😉
Christy says
Thanks, Linda! I love the idea of turning it into a shelf…I never thought of that! 🙂

Happy belated birthday! Love the flamingos in the yard. Want to see a photo when you pay your sister back. Who would have believed that something so gorgeous and functional could have come out of that dated CD holder. I was thinking “What could you do with that?” Well, leave it to you to knock it out of the park. Love it.
Christy says
Thanks, Cyndi! I will be sure to share a photo of my sister’s yard…it was hilarious and she got a huge kick out of it! Glad you liked the outcome of this old thing! XO

Happy Birthday Christy ???? Hope you enjoyed your day 🙂 Love the flamingos! For my 50th birthday I woke up to a 7 foot cartoon buzzard (yup I do mean the bird..lol) in my front yard with a sign that read “happy birthday you old buzzard” all thanks to my sister 🙂 🙂 I still haven’t got her back for that one ???? ???? BTW great re-purpose from CD caddy to utensil/napkin caddy.

So cute… very well done!! Take a bow!!! I was searching and searching for your post yesterday and thought somehow I might have deleted my subscription so I ‘renewed’ however it didn’t allow me since it was still active. Whew! But then when you said it was your birthday, I forgave you!!! 🙂 Hope you had a fabulous birthday!!! Enjoy your weekend!!
Christy says
Oh no! Sorry to do that to you, DeAnna! I just didn’t have enough time to get it together on Wednesday, so I didn’t stress over it since it was my bday. Thanks for the birthday wishes!! XOXO
Catherine says
Love it! The first thing I thought of for this was at a wedding reception – we had ours out on a farm, not a huge wedding, maybe 50-75 guests, but it would have been so cute! Might have to have a couple, but for the cost (and after paying for a wedding!) and time involved, someone could make a few. Didn’t realize it was your birthday, hope it was a great one!
Christy says
Thanks, Catherine! This would be so pretty at a wedding, and yes…definitely cost-friendly! XO
Marie from The Interior Frugalista says

Christy says
Aww you are too sweet to me, Marie! I’m not exactly sure what I saw in it when I picked up forever ago, but glad I came up with something! Thanks for the b-day wishes! XOXO

You continually amaze me Christy, I don’t know that I would have seen a cute tote out of a CD holder! It looks great!
Happy birthday! The pink flamingos are hilarious! I would snag one to keep, I’ve been wanting one to go with my vintage travel trailer! My birthday is Thursday but I doubt I wake up to a yard full of fun like that! ha ha!
Tania
Christy says
Aww thanks, Tania! I wanted to keep one ha ha…they probably wouldn’t have noticed. Happy Birthday to you!! XO

Becky says
No way! That is amazing!!! Ugly to gorgeous in… haha, a few hours?! I never would have thought to pick that poor ugly little guy up! The spindle handle and front piece really finish this one off. I love it!
Happy birthday, may you have the BEST year ever! And DINOSAURS?!? Hahaha! Rats, two of my sisters JUST had birthdays! My twin brothers turned 30 today, but they live on the other side of the country. : ( Guess I’ll give the flamingos a break this time around. : )
Christy says
Thank you, Becky!! I still have this on my little kitchen cart with the plates and napkins in it…I might just have to keep it! And the dinosaurs were awesome! She was totally surprised lol. This is the first time any of us have done anything like this and it was so fun. I’m thinking all of my siblings need to wake up this way at least once. 🙂
