And I’m back, Friends, just as I promised! Yesterday I shared our yard sale journey, including what I found for the very cute six year old boy’s room to which I had been assigned. If you missed it, you’ll probably want to catch up HERE.
Here is a recap of what I found for the room:
It all looks a little rough here, huh? Not to worry!
Since we couldn’t start loading into the Habitat house until Sunday morning, we unloaded all of our pieces that needed redoing into a conference room at the hotel.
And turned it into a DIY workshop!
Would you believe we didn’t start on our makeovers until about 5:30 Saturday night?? Talk about crazy!
The dresser got a new paint job in Sparrow Gray by Behr:
I sanded and spray primed first. I chose to use a satin latex for durability.
These drawers were originally going to get a good cleaning and stained, but they ended up painted and you’ll understand why at the reveal…
Not bad for $3.50 each though, huh?
We were all hard at work late into the night:
{Sarah-Nestrs, Nancy-Artsy Chicks Rule, Fadra- All things Fadra, and Nick-Nestrs}
Nick and Sarah had some really cool repurposed and upcycled projects for their living spaces!
Even the GMC crew were busy helping:
{Megan and Katie from GMC}
They were such a huge help…from keeping us fed, to moving furniture, to picking up anything and everything we needed along the way! (Thank you all!!)
Are you ready for the big reveal?
Here is a reminder of how the room looked when we stopped by on Saturday:
A teeny tiny 9 x 10 foot space.
It progressed to this…here you can see I painted the headboard in the same gray as well as the big wall shelf:
And I added stripes to the dresser front using FrogTape:
This was marathon decorating!
The reveal was scheduled for 2:00pm and by the time we moved all of our furniture pieces and décor to the house it was about 11:30. We had two and a half hours to decorate a room from start to finish, and Nancy and I also had the bathroom to do.
Megan was running around giving us the countdown, “30 minutes, 15 minutes!”, but we managed to get it done just in time!
Here is the final room reveal:
There was a piece of plywood covering the window that I didn’t get a chance to remove before they arrived, but this is a nice, sunny room.
For the dresser, I decided to just paint the pulls to blend in with the dresser since I was pressed for time. The top drawer was missing one so I replaced those.
After seeing how small the space was, I was glad I chose storage pieces for the walls.
A soon as I saw the small space, I knew there was no way I was going to be able to fit the desk in his room.
I had plans to stain the top to match the antique chair I found, and paint the bottom to match the dresser. I would have also stained the drawer shelves to match to bring the warm wood up onto the walls.
With nothing else stained in the room, I decided to paint the drawers for the wall instead. I pulled the blue from the bedding, which I found at Walmart to match the color from one of his favorite basketball teams…
Golden State Warriors! I found this shirt for him at Dick’s. I also thought he would love this bean bag chair I found at Target since my boys love theirs. (It also later provided a soft landing spot for all of the slam-dunks that started from the bed!)
His other favorite team is the Cavaliers, and I hit the jackpot when I found this LeBron James poster at Hobby Lobby! Perfect for above the bed!
(A big thanks to Courtney from French Country Cottage for taking a few light and bright pics with her real camera for me. I only brought my cell.)
I found these basketball trophies at a thrift store and spray painted them so the shelves wouldn’t be totally empty for the reveal.
Maybe he can replace them with some trophies of his own some day.
I had plans to hang the old hoop on the wall, but it was just too heavy and I didn’t want to take any chances that it would Fall on him.
I had found a rectangular wire bin for $2 to hold his basketball and other sports gear, so I just left the hoop in there too. Maybe they can find a place to mount it outside. I also bought him a nice new basketball at Dick’s. (Thanks to Fadra for washing the dirty net for me. 🙂 )
I really tried to outfit his room with things he would be able to really use and enjoy, including the cozy soft throw I added to end of his bed.
Something of his very own to snuggle up with on the couch on chilly days.
I hope he enjoys his space. Even though it is quite small, the decor will grow with him, and it is a space he can call his own.
Here is a recap of all the yard sale finds I transformed for this space:
With a little vision, I was able to create a cozy and cohesive space without spending a fortune.
And what happened to the desk and chair? The sweet older gentleman who unlocked our workroom for us at the hotel was admiring the desk and mentioned he had just refinished a piece that he found on the side of the road. I offered these to him, and he was more than happy to take them off our hands. He loaded them on his truck right then and there. I have a feeling they’ll get their happily ever after soon as well.
Want to see the bathroom?
It started like this:
Twenty minutes before reveal time:
Ahh we made it!
Had we known they weren’t going to hang a mirror, we would have purchased one.
Thanks to Courtney for setting up the bathroom for us since we were so crunched for time.
Unfortunately the shower curtain rod we purchased had no tension so we left the shower curtain for her to hang later…
We found the shower curtain, rings and rugs, as well as the wire bin on the back of the toilet, at TJ Maxx. Nancy found the pretty soaps at a yard sale…
The towels came from Big Lots.
Here we were patiently awaiting the new homeowner’s arrival…
{Megan, Me, Fadra, Nancy}
And how did the family like it? I’d say is was the surprise of a lifetime! Mission Accomplished. 😀
You can see the whole house reveal that Allison filmed and shared live on her Facebook Page here:
If that doesn’t give you the feel-goods, I don’t know what will!
And what did Emir think of his room?
I think that smile says it all. 😀
Thanks again to Megan and GMC for inviting me along for the adventure of a lifetime for such a great cause. This group of people are all so amazing and giving, and it was truly a pleasure to work alongside each and every one of them!

In work of course. I’m just wondering what you did about a toilet paper holder? I didn’t see on in the after shot.
I’m also curious about why you put the shelf with pegs over the bed? Would he be likely to hang clothes over the bed, or did you have something else in mind?
Thanks
Christy says
This was a home that was rehabbed, not a new build, so we assumed there was already a TP holder in the bathroom…an easy add-on though. With just over two hours to completely load (hang curtains, assemble bed, make bed, hang everything on the walls, etc. etc. etc) I didn’t lose sleep over it. The shelf I bought was more for him to have a place to display a few personal things, rather than to hang things from and I had to hang it low enough so he could reach it safely. This was really the only wall it would fit on.
Heather @ Viral Upcycle says
Wow Christy, I don’t know how you all composed yourself, I was bawling. That’s so humbling and inspiring. I loved the boys room, adorable! Maybe next time GMC could give you guys the room layouts and measurements. You all did a fabulous job!!
Christy says
Thank you, Heather! Oh I shed a few tears myself! Her reaction was so cute and priceless at every turn though that it kept the moment light which helped with the tears. Measurements would have been really helpful for sure. 🙂
Cecilia says
It looks great! What a fun thing to get to do. Too bad the desk didn’t work out (did it get repurposed somewhere?). Y’all did a great job.
Christy says
Thanks, Cecilia!! Thanks for reminding me, I forgot to mention what happened to the desk. A super nice older gentleman who had unlocked our workroom at the hotel was commenting on how he had just redone a piece he found on the side of the road, so I offered the desk and chair to him. He was more than happy to have them. 🙂
Paula@SweetPea says

I can’t believe you had such a short time to rehab the furniture and get it all done! Holy wow, that is pressure! I know he was beyond thrilled with your thoughtful decisions with his special interests in mind! You have not only given him a special place to enjoy, but I bet you have set an example in kindness and giving that he will pay forward to others as he gets older. Thanks for including the links for the other spaces, I can’t wait to see them too!

Marcie Lovett says
Looks like your little guy was thrilled with his room, Christy. Good thing you picked up that tall dresser for that small space. Too bad you didn’t get dimensions ahead of time so you could plan, but you did a great job with what you had. So much fun to see it all come together!
Christy says
He really was, Marcie! And yes I agree…glad I found a tall dresser. It was a bit of a challenge outfitting a room we had never seen before, but it all worked out. We did get a floor plan, but the dimensions were printed so tiny, we couldn’t read them. Glad you enjoyed it! XOXO
Patty says
Oh my his smile does say it all. You did a fabulous job on his room in such a short time, the colors are perfect for a little boys room and doesn’t make it look smaller or closed in. I think it is just perfect. What a great feeling to do something so wonderful and fun at the same time. I think GMC chose the right group of gals for the job. Kudos to GMC for sponsoring such a well worth project.
Christy says
Thanks so much, Patty! It was such and awesome experience and so fun that I was able to give back doing something I love! GMC rocks for sure!! XO
Tania says

Christy says
This really was so rewarding, Tania, and so awesome that I was able to give back by doing something I love! The Mom was just too cute!! XO
Nancy @ Artsy Chicks Rule says
You did such a great job with such a tiny space! The room turned out great! I’m so happy you were able to go and we were able to experience it together! 🙂
xo
Nancy
Christy says
Thanks, Girly!! Me too…so glad I pushed my hubby to the breaking point to go lol! (Totally worth it!) XOXO
Cheryl Call says
With a room that small, the best thing for a desk is to have a piece of wood hinged under the window. When not in use, it would be flush with the wall. When used, flip the lid up to use as a desktop.
Christy says
Great idea!
Sandra@lookingforpotential says
It looks amazing Christy… can you imagine how that little guy felt, great job !!!
Christy says
Thank you, Sandra!! I hope he will continue to enjoy it for years to come! XO
Nanette says
Dear Christy,
How awesome! The last photo made my eyes well up…thank you for your talent and generosity!

I’m so glad you enjoyed it, Nanette! There were lots of wet eyes at the reveal. 🙂
Becky says
Wow! WELL DONE!!! I can’t imagine how fast you guys must have been moving. : )
Christy says
Thanks, Becky! It was seriously like being on one of those shows where the owners will be there any second ha ha. It was a blast and miraculously we finished just in time. 🙂
Fadra says
Since I was in the kitchen and dining room, I never got to see you “at work” in the room. I was shocked when I peeked in and saw your vision come together! And I’m amazed at how all of you went with the flow making last minute changes as needed.
And I’m so happy you got a picture with the little boy. His face is priceless!
Christy says
So glad you liked the final room, Fadra! The pieces I bought were not exactly the prettiest, most up-to-date pieces, but paint is magical. I too loved how your vision for the colander meal came together, such a thoughtful touch. I ordered a nicer more heavy duty over-the-door basketball net on Amazon for Emir and he got it on Wednesday. I just knew that cheapie one wouldn’t last long. I got a note from Amazon from Crystal and Emir and she was so grateful. Such an awesome and deserving family! XO
Bev says
Love this! I have volunteered with Habitat a time or two in the past–what a fantastic idea!
Christy says
Glad you enjoyed it, Bev, and kudos to you for volunteering your time as well! As you know, Habitat homes don’t usually come decorated, so this was a huge surprise for this sweet new homeowner!
Marie, The Interior Frugalista says
Well now that I’ve slobbered all over my keyboard watching the video, what a beautiful gift for this adorable family! You guys rocked the thrifty finds and transformed each room so beautifully. I can only imagine how much fun (and work) this was. Love the reaction of the family, especially Mom. Kudos to you all!
Christy says
Thanks so much, Marie! It was such an awesome thing to be a part of. Yard sales for days…you would love it! Transforming everything in such a short time was a challenge, but we made it, and Mom’s reaction was the BEST! XOXO
Jackie says
Fabulous! Thanks for sharing this with us! GREAT job!
Christy says
Thanks, Jackie!! I loved being able to share with ya’ll!! XO
