If you’ve been following March Madness, welcome back! It’s day #4 of my 31 Thrifty Makeovers in 31 Days! Today I’m sharing what I did with the goldalicious pineapple lamp I received in my Swap it Like it’s Hot package.
I received these two items from my friend, Shanna at Restoration Redoux for this fun challenge:
I shared what I did with the basket yesterday, but I saved the lamp for today. I told you yesterday that it was no longer gold and it was no longer a lamp. Both are true!
This was kind of cute as is, but the lighting was super dull and I have no need for a tiny lamp, so before I could think twice I cut off the cord and took it apart…
Now what do I do with it? Honestly it sat looking at me like this for several days, then the threaded piece sticking out at the top gave me an idea.
I went looking for a frame and found this in my garage that cost 75¢ at a thrift store:
I used a 3/8 inch drill bit to drill a hole in one end…
Then I screwed it right onto the threaded piece of the lamp that was at the top!
Here’s what it turned into:
How cute is this?
I gave the frame a coat of gold spray paint first then spray painted them both in Rustoleum’s Heirloom White. A little sanding here and there to bring out some details, and a piece of chalkboard cut to fit the frame and voila! (See how to make a chalkboard HERE.)
This would be perfect to put by the phone to jot a number down or write a quick message.
The chalk rests right on part of the pineapple.
Convenient!
How simple was this project?? Easy is the best!
Here is another I created the same way for a giveaway:
I’ll be back tomorrow for day #5 sharing what I did with this sewing machine table:
UPDATE: See how I updated this little table HERE now!
XO,
Don’t Miss a Thing!
If you like what you see, there are several ways to follow along!

Shut up!!! LOL That is one sweet memo board perfect for a kitchen (being a pineapple and all). Love the chalked message “Call Mom”…always always call Mom (I need to remind my son of that – haven’t heard from him in weeks).
Christy K. James says
Isn’t this so cool? I wrote that on it before I sent a pic of it to show my Mom and just left it on there lol. I hope my boys call me every once in a while!

Thanks, Sue! Ha ha I thought the title might throw people, but it made a pretty good chalkboard with the help of that frame. My Mom already claimed this one lol. 🙂

Christy K. James says

Becky says
Now THAT is the cutest thing ever! I can’t believe it! I never in a million years would have thought of this, and even as I was reading I was thinking “yeah, but what does it look like… I’m not gonna like this one.” Wrong! It has to be your color choices that make some of your projects so amazing.
Christy K. James says
Aww thanks, Becky! I think I surprised myself with this one. I love when a crazy idea totally works! 🙂
Karen says
I love your lamp make over. Small lamps have been hard for me to find. Can you tell me where you found yours?
Christy K. James says
Hi Karen, this lamp was part of a flea market swap where we swapped thrift store finds with other bloggers and transformed them. This is one of the items I received. A reader told me that she bought one just like it at Dollar General though for $5, so maybe try there? The thrift stores are a great place to look too! 🙂

Lana says
I love everything you do! I am a new fan and really enjoying your March Madness segment! What grade and type of sand paper do you use on your paint projects? Sometimes I end up taking off too much paint! Thank you! Lana
Christy K. James says
Thanks so much, Lana and welcome! I usually use 220 grit sandpaper, and it takes off just the right amount. Sometimes I’ll even use 320 grit for a super smooth surface. I like the 3M brand that is red and comes in 9X11 sheets. I cut them into four and wrap a piece around an old sanding sponge to sand. Occasionally I might use my rotary sander, but its more difficult to control how distressed you want your surface to be.
Debbie says
What size frame did you use? Haven’t tried chalkpaint yet but getting ready to. Such a cute “purposeful’ idea, thank you.
Christy K. James says
Thanks, Debbie! This is a 5X7 frame. 🙂
